CW: a lot of biphobia. 

 Plot: Ben Carver is back to normal. He’s getting all As in his classes at the Natick School. He was just elected captain of the baseball team. He’s even won a big scholarship for college, if he can keep up his grades. All that foolishness with Rafe Goldberg last semester is over now, and he just needs to be a Carver, work hard, and stay focused. Except… There’s Hannah, a gorgeous girl who attracts him and distracts him. There’s his mother, whose quiet unhappiness he’s noticing for the first time. School is harder, the pressure higher, the scholarship almost slipping away. And there’s Rafe, funny, kind, dating someone else…and maybe the real normal that Ben needs. 

 7/10 on the Rainbow Scale™ 🌈: I was very excited to find out that “Openly Straight” had a sequel, but this book was kind of a let down. It’s very well written: Konigsberg’s trademark sense of humour is still great, and the romance between Ben and Rafe still cute. There’s even some unexpected but totally welcome genderqueer representation. However the whole novel it’s so drenched in biphobic stereotypes and remarks that it makes it very hard to enjoy all the good parts. Still liked it altogether, but I’m kinda disappointed at the tone deafness of it all.

Cooper and Park work so well together and while this addition to the series, may have focused on the romance more than the mystery- I didn’t care!! Cooper and Park have been through so much and continue to come through stronger than ever. I know I said it a million times but this book is beautiful and highly underrated. I'll keep promoting it until I die. It's a perfect summer read and a unique coming of age story.
