So I've had this joke in my head for a couple months (at least), but hadn't found the right spot to make it. Today it is complete.

"You need to be nice to people."
No. Fuck you.
(Legal disclaimer: I've always been nice to people, but I've reached my limit. People need to start being nice to me. That would be nice for a change.)

Inspired by this post. We needed to mend a new tear in our pants and chose to secure the patch with some really fun embroidery.

Sock mending dump part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did a lot of sock darning over the last 2-3 weeks. The pictures won't all fit in one post, so hopefully I'll get the others queued up soon.

It’s finally finished and washed! Metroid Fusion was my first Metroid game and the Dachora and Etecoons are my favourite little guys from that game. I don’t generally enjoy horror, so young me really appreciated the cute, cuddly, friendly creatures breaking up the almost nonstop fear that game evokes. So what better way to commemorate these special friends than to make a lil 5 cm patch on my favourite shorts and embroider them onto it? If I was doing it all over again, I’d probably make the background more grey and less green so the Dachora would pop out more. The text above the patch is the name of the piece, “Save the Animals.” This is of course a reference to the speed running community’s famous phrase referring to the rescue of these same creatures at the end of the previous game, Super Metroid, which I haven’t yet had a chance to really play (I will very soon though).
Photos of the process as well as the screen cap it’s based on below the cut.

I went back to replay and complete Fusion earlier this year which is what inspired me to make this in the first place. Since then, I’ve also played & finished (not completed) Metroid: Zero Mission thanks to Nintendo Switch Online. Additionally, I have obtained and begun Samus Returns, the Metroid II remake. Now that this is finished, I’ll be playing Samus Returns a lot more so that I can move on to Super Metroid someday.

More mending with the corner of this pants pocket. Now that I'm finished with this, I can get back to sock darning cause too many of my socks are falling apart 😅

Miscellaneous little patches/mends I did to switch things up while doing my “big” embroidery/mending project.

I learned how to Scotch Darn over the past month! I watched a really intuitive video (that I unfortunately didn't save the link to) about how to do it and thought, "I have a bunch of socks that need darned and this looks easier than woven darns or God-forbidden Swiss Darning." And it definitely was easier. This will be my go-to for sock mending for a long time now.
Close-ups and a later mend I did on the Piranha socks below the cut.

Unless you really like the thick padding feel on the bottom of your feet (which I sometimes do if my feet are sore), I can't recommend using thick yarn like the rainbow yarn I used on the Super Mario Bros pair. I would recommend using a lighter weight thread than the original material or at most a similar weight cause this style of mending is THICC.

Sock mending dump part 2 (pt 1 here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really have a thing for graphic socks, but graphic socks usually aren't the best quality. I'm gonna try to keep them all mended and stop buying any new ones. I've had a 'no new clothes' rule for a while now, and I've stuck to it, but cool new socks do tempt me a lot, especially when all my favourites I already have are in the mending pile.
I have a few more socks in the mending pile, but I think I've reached my limit on darning for at least a few months… now if I could just get back to working on those dang jeans with the weak crotches…

It's winter again, so I had to mend my husband's favourite 'comfy' pants cause the holes/stress marks make him cold.

I'm not exactly sure why I decided to do two separate patches so close together instead of one big patch, but I like how it turned out… 🤷‍♀️

So we don't post WIPs (other than the fact that mending itself is an eternal WIP). We like to show all of the progress of a work in a single post that doesn't leave you wanting more, but now that we have them gathered, we will post this picture of all the colours we'll be using in our next mend/embroidery. We're really excited; it'll be our most ambitious piece thus far. We expect it'll take a good long while because we want to do it right, so don't expect to see any new mending/sewing posts from this blog for a while, but know that something really cool (if also super nerdy) is coming. Wish us luck! 💛

Huh..... I don't answer well to being told what to do (even if I'm the one telling me), but... The silliness of it might trump that? It's not a command, it's a challenge... Idk why that works better, but, yk, The Brain™️ works in mysterious ways.
Hack for if you're struggling with ADHD paralysis and you can't get started on a task:
Step 1: Add some silly rule to the task to make it more interesting and whimsical.
Step 2: Pretend Sam Reich just told you to do it.
Here are a few examples that have worked for me recently.

(Bonus points if you can hear the setup in your head. "Alright, players, for your next challenge" 🎶ding🎶)

I found this pair of jeans at the bottom of my mend pile and decided to figure out what they needed. All I could find was this hole in the knee, so I decided to go with some light colours to try to match the vibe of these extremely light, near-white jeans. After I started weaving the patch, I decided that some roses might look nice around the patch, so when I was done, I used some of the extra purple floss along with a complementary pink floss to make the little roses around the patch.
