last year i had the fun opportunity to draw for the quodo valentines minifest, and while I didn't draw anything this year, here are some leftover quodos I'd done then to get a better hang of drawing the pair.

i'd planned to make the last two into a comic about quark getting stood up on a date (with a happy ending), but i,,,didn't finish, so now it's just. sad quark hrs. whoops! (sorry quark)

something essential to Quodo is exploring them as narrative foils...

I'm noticing how I love a "twist" in fic I write. like a close parallel where they are exact opposites about something, but it's revealed to be a complete 180 reversal (but on a deeper level they're actually the same) -- it's the whole vibe!!! opposite sides of the same coin. the Layers!!! the subversion of tropes! etc.

examples:

"Artificial Parts" smut fic: Odo's virgin first relationship & Quark is very sexually experienced... lots of subversions & exploration of that. also with romance vs just sex, genuine connection vs ulterior motives, etc

"For Richer" marriage proposal: Quark wants his way in the marriage contract and a grand gesture, Odo just wants a sincere commitment... but it ends up being the other way around (but also both)

"Before sunsets" unexpected reunion: Quark pretends he's there for business (but actually his date stood him up), Odo pretends his date stood him up (but actually he's there on Changeling business)

"Shiny & New" d/s slow bang: spite sex disguised as romantic sex disguised as spite sex but really it is actually romantic

"Down on my Knees"" tentacle bj: Quark as sex teacher vs Odo as inexperienced, but Odo is the one that completely undoes Quark (a classic theme in quodo smut tbh)

new vacation fic (publish later this week): Quark tricks Odo into going on vacation, but really it's Odo that has tricked Quark into the vacation, except really they both have because they are workaholics who can't just admit they want to spend time with each other.

new prison fic (yet to be published... SPOILERS AHEAD!!!): Quark is proud of being guilty of his crime, but he assumes Odo is innocent... turns out Quark is innocent of the actual crime (but betrayed people), while Odo is technically guilty (but it's an unjust law / tough situation)

i think it would be funny if i start writing quodo if only because i've spent the past year writing ummm "really dark stuff" with "kind of a weird and unsettling vibe" to an increasingly uninterested audience and that would be a huge swerve. CAN i go back to sillygoofy not that quodo doesn't have the range (they do) but that my personal call to quodo IS the sillygoofy shenanigans of it all. however i have deeply loved my offputting era and that is fun in its own way. on the other hand i could probably make odo birth a building and it wouldn't be offputting. so pros and cons.

The Infinite and the Divine (2020) by Robert Rath

My partner recommended this Warhammer novel to me because I like Quodo, and... yeah. Extremely the same vibes: scrungly old man yaoi; if you've been rivals for 65 million years (they are robots), you are no longer rivals, you are GAY; why do I keep thinking about him when I'm trying to meditate -- it must be because I HATE him so much.

Anyway, here's some random thoughts (spoilers):

"Everyone had their damage. Of the few who'd already arisen, several of the old highborn of necrontyr emerged not knowing their names. Others were complete automatons, or even mad. In dark moments, Trazyn feared that in ten thousand years, when the dynasties began to awaken in full, he would find all of his peers had diminished. Not he, though. Trazyn had emerged with his faculties entirely intact." Me: Is Trazyn an unreliable narrator? My partner: Could be...

Partner: Where are you in the book? Me: Trazyn and Orikan are trying to kill each other. Partner: ........

Me: Omg. 😂 I guess I'm at the *first* time Trazyn and Orikan are trying to kill each other, then.

I am not a Warhammer fan myself, but my partner will periodically explain things/provide infodumps to me whenever I'm curious about something, and one thing I love is that the Orks are so fae and whimsical. Part of this fae whimsicality, for example, is that things become true because they believe that they're true. For example, they believe that when you paint things red, it makes them go faster, but because they believe this, it actually *does* make them go faster. But another part of this fae whimsicality is that they have the fourth-wall-breaking ability to change the genre of a work they're in. My partner once explained to me that there's an Ork detachment that, when you play it, its main specialty is that the guys are really speedy and are able to control the board through maneuverability. This is not a particularly reliable game strategy, though, because against a skilled player, it basically turns into a game of luck where you can win if the objectives award a lot of points for board control but you will lose otherwise. So it basically turns a war game about battle strategy into a game of chance -- in particular, about whether you can make "gotta go fast" into a winning strategy. So basically, you have these Orks zooming around the battlefield in their Mad Max trucks deciding to play Mario Kart instead of, like war, and this mental image is just so funny to me.

Anyway, the reason why this is relevant to this book is that you have these very serious aristocratic faux-Egyptian ancient robots (an archivist and a sorcerer, basically), but then when they're in the vicinity of the Orks, the narration changes to, like, "The crescent shape of the command barge rose, slugga and shoota rounds pinging off its armoured underside," and you see all these "stormboyz" flying around with carefree glee as their shoddily thrown-together ships are one second away from an explosion and you can just imagine the cartoon BOOM sound effect that would result from that. Like, once the Orks enter the scene with their trukks and sluggas and kroozers and outlandishly-slapped-together control panels labeled with simplistic things like "GO" and "STOP," then suddenly the genre of the work changes from whatever it was to hijinks-filled cartoon comedy.

Partner: Have you gotten to Trazyn and Orikan's date yet? 🥺👉👈 Me: No but they're, like... having coffee together? Partner: Oh yeah, I guess they kinda have two dates. But you'll know when you get to the date scene I'm talking about. Me: (later) THEY'RE ON THEIR DATE.

Omg, Trazyn and Orikan literally made each other worse 😂

One thing that makes Trazyn and Orikan's dynamic very similar to Odo and Quark's is that both Trazyn and Orikan are kinda awful in their own ways, same as Odo and Quark. Like, they're both just jerks who are mean and petty and terrible to each other and just never really get better. 😆

The big-scale battle scenes in this book are a little too long, although I guess if you're writing for a game called Warhammer, you have to do that. I did like (in the last battle) seeing all of the armies you saw Trazyn collect during the book. It was a bit of a running gag that he would steal some warriors and equipment for his collection, and that got a funny payoff at the end.

This is great and exactly the vibe I'm going for but I feel the need to add that it's also basically how Quodo works in my mind

I feel the need to use my voice and claim that after his unhinged foil dynamics with Cardassian men, Sisko’s biggest Problematic Homoerotic Relationship on the show is with Quark. There are multiple instances of him lording his power over Quark in weirdly playful ways. Remember the scene in The Search when he gets Quark to go along on the search for the Founders by invoking the authority of the Grand Nagus, and then makes Quark kiss the Nagus’ staff, just for kicks? Or there’s the ending of Body Parts, where everybody’s rebuilding Quark’s bar through the power of friendship and Quark tries to get Sisko to pay him a “storage fee” to keep the bar open, and Sisko fixes him with this intense Dom Stare and makes him furiously backpedal before agreeing. Like not only does he intimidate Quark and push him around when he deems it necessary, he also seems to take genuine pleasure in placing Quark under his thumb and watching him squirm around a little.

Quodo recs for the last ~8 months

I got really behind on Quodo works for the last eight months or so. But now that I'm finally caught up, I thought I would post a rec list featuring my favorite fanworks that have been posted since around December 2022 or so. These are just my personal favorites -- feel free to add more.

Fic

see you later (740 words) by kirajockstrap: An episode-centric ficlet about Odo's thoughts when confronted with the fact that Quark might actually die in the Terok Nor flashback episode, 2x08 "Necessary Evil."

Doctor's Orders (1,904 words) by WeaverofWords: After a routine appointment with Quark, Bashir ends up diagnosing a very clueless Odo with an obsession with Quark that he might want to act on. A funny fic I like because of how clueless Odo is. Poor Dr. Bashir!

Gotta Look Good (5,191 words - Mature) by WeaverofWords. Quark ropes Odo into helping him take a good profile pic for a dating website. Odo checks out Quark's profile page and is a bit horrified by Quark's dating strategy and decides something needs to be done about it. Again, another fic I love because of how clueless Odo is (but he still cares about Quark a lot).

Holosuite Malfunction (9,537 words) by cool_ha_ha. There's a holosuite malfunction and Odo and Quark are trapped in a program (you know how it goes). I enjoyed this one because of the cheesy bodice-ripper vibes of the program Odo and Quark get stuck in, the sexual tension between Quark and Odo and a hologram version of Odo, and Quark and Odo struggling to articulate their feelings for each other.

A Mile in Another Man's Bucket (48,810 words) by Superfloxes: Roleswap AU. A bit of a double roleswap going on here: Quark and Odo end up in a universe where Quark is the DS9 security chief and Odo is a no-good bartender/petty criminal. The result is that they end up having to do the other person's job for a few days. Simple right? Well, maybe they'll end up understanding each other a bit better after they do that. Along the way, you also get a few glimpses of what the show might have been like if Odo and Quark were swapped.

what's the problem? I don't know (well, maybe I'm in love) (WIP - 2,797 words - Mature) by Khoshekh42. This one's a WIP but I'm enjoying it a lot so far. Quark and solid!Odo end up having a drunk one-night stand and then end up kind of avoiding each other because they're not sure how to deal with that kind of situation. Gotta love the pining!

Not quite Quodo but I enjoyed them so I'll rec them anyway:

Lost in Translation (Patching the UT) (18,939 words) by sayler_antimony. This is mostly gen worldbuilding about quirks of the languages of various Star Trek races, but there's a bit of an outsider POV look at various pairings, including Odo/Quark (in chapters 3, 5, and 12). But the whole thing is very worth reading for a DS9 fan!

Benefits of Acquaintance (3,481 words - Explicit) by synthehol_king. This is a Garak/Quark PWP, but there are undertones of Garak->Bashir and Quark->Odo pining to it. Fun characterization of Garak and Quark and how they might interact during sex.

Peace Negotiations (10,505 words - Explicit) by StopTalkingAtMe. This is a Quark/Brunt fic but there is just a hint of Quark's attraction to Odo. Basically, Quark and Brunt are holed up in a Risa vacation home after an auction of rare artifacts goes south. They end up playing out some of the other's sexual fantasies. Plotty and fun!
