Deacon is a liar.
I hate to do this, because, ouch. But this has been floating around in my head so I need to put it forward.
We know from the railroad terminal that Deacon has been looking into Vault 111 for a long time. We even find a railroad ally symbol just outside the entrance to the vault - a common fan theory being he was watching the vault when we first emerge. We can also infer from the terminal that Deacon knows the Institute visited Vault 111 around 60 years ago.
When he sees the sole survivor emerge from the vault, he begins trailing us - we can find a disguised Deacon in Diamond City, Goodneighbor and Bunker Hill. So he knows about us pretty well, and has been with us right from the start.
Which is why this doesn't right with me. If Deacon knew the last recorded instance of Institute interference at Vault 111 was sixty years ago, and he also knows that the Sole Survivor was in a cryo facility, and had their baby stolen by the institute...
It means Deacon knows that Shaun is, almost certainly, sixty years old.
Why would he not tell us? He even tells us in one of his 'your thoughts' dialogues that we'll find Shaun and get him back. Why lie about this, even after our final affinity dialogue?
He didn't tell us because he needed us - the railroad needed us - to find the Institute.
If we knew that Shaun was already an old man, there was a real possibility we'd have given up searching. And then the Railroad would never have moved forward with gathering information.
Now, he never could have predicted Shaun was the director, but he could have easily predicted his age. He kept us in the dark for the good of the organisation. And while we know Deacon is a liar, this feels like something different.
(I'm aware this is all likely just Bethesda overlooking their own writing, and it's a big mistake. But still...)

You have beef with Desdemona because you subconsciously associate women in authority with that one teacher from second grade and imagine them to be shrill and unreasonable without any actual evidence.
I have beef with Desdemona because if you betray the Railroad, she chooses to use her last moments on earth to berate Deacon for no reason whatsoever.
We are not the same.

Omfg I know I’m shouting into the void but every Fallout fan needs to read the journals of the Railroad leaders from P.A.M.’s mainframe terminal. There’s that huge theory that Deacon is the lone wanderer but he was actively, documentedly, doing stuff in the Commonwealth before, during, and after Fo3’s events jfc. I feel like I’ve uncovered sacred texts with untold secrets but they are fully available both in game and online.
The timeline does match up for Pinkerton in Rivet City to be Pinky from the Commonwealth Railroad tho which I fully believe.
