Ok kin update time
Tumblr media
Found this image on the wings of fire amino. NOT MINE!! Here’s a link to the page where the image was featured: http://aminoapps.com/p/u7ehr8
Anyway.
So i was looking at pictures of dragons cause thats just what I do from time to time and i saw this.
It’s a dragon like the type of dragon I thought I was kin of, with feathered wings, but it also has a fish-like tail and tHAT IS SOMETHING I ALSO KIN!!
In real life I do ‘mermaiding’ aka swimming with a monofin because it feels really nice and natural to me to swim through the water like a fish.
This beautiful dragon species has literally every feature of a dragon that I could possibly want. I now have to draw my own dragon-fish-bird so I can understand this better

☆ expression tips for polymorph, polytherians, shapeshifters, and any individuals with numerous forms ☆
it’s an obvious one, but if you like to change your appearance based on your form, then collect various wearable gear. this can be anything like clothes, jewelry, accessories, tails, masks, or even makeshift things that reflect your forms. you can mix and match as much as you’d like — if you’re feeling particularly goatlike and fishlike, you can opt for a fishing shirt with a pair of horns!
of course, gear doesn’t just include wearable things. you can collect plushies, decor, figurines, pieces of art, or any objects that remind you of your kins or forms :)
try experimenting with sounds! you could perhaps learn how to recreate birdsong, copy different kinds of growls and howls, or even invent your own or personal lexicon of words and phrases! another option is finding a playlist of songs or noises that reflect your habitat or home, like rainforest sounds or thematic music
it’s a weirder one, but you can also experiment with your scent with perfume or cologne. this is a subtle yet effective way to convey a different vibe without looking any different
if your diet allows, try branching out to different foods or snacks that may fit your form. for example, on days you feel more rodentlike, you could opt for more leafy and nut based snacks like salad or trail mix. on other days you feel more carnivorous, try a hearty burger or chicken wings instead!
watch documentaries, movies, or even do research based on your current form. learn about hibernation patterns if you’re a bear, watch a documentary on the behaviors of cats if you’re a domestic feline, or watch the how to train your dragon movies if you’re a nightfury
as a shapeshifter myself, i like to keep these things in mind whenever i shift to find ways to express my identity :3 hopefully this helps anyone that may need it !!

Kraken Slayer (Paladin Archetype)
Tumblr media
(art by Fran-Hdez on DeviantArt)
I can’t remember how many times I’ve said it, but I don’t get how D&D and Pathfinder did krakens as a concept.
Giant predatory squid that attacks ships? Check.
It’s also a fully intelligent creature and is almost always a tyrant monster that enslaves and rules over smaller aquatic beings, conjures storms to bring trouble to surface mortals, and so on…. Ok? Why??
Intellectually, I understand, D&D needed a giant monstrous threat underwater which could be like a dragon in not just power level but scheming, but they had already made the classic chromatic dragons all terrestrial, leaving only the bronze dragon, a metallic dragon, as the only one of the core 10 that live in the ocean. (Also, they probably were at least a little influenced by Cthulhu, but were not keen to make a tentacled monstrous overlord too close to it while Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu RPG had the rights to use those monsters directly.)
But the fact that kraken are such powerful and typically evil aquatic monsters alongside the alghollthu means that to the aquatic peoples living below the waves, they fill much the same role in their folklore, as great evils that heroes must arise to slay on occasion.
Enter the kraken slayer, a form of paladin seen among aquatic cultures that seeks to protect others from the depredations of the evil that lurks in the depths, be they krakens, alghollthu, cults of monstrous underwater gods, and so on.
The tradition originated among the tritons, those goodly aquatic folk that originated from the Plane of Water, which does have it’s own kraken problems on occasion. However, it has since spread to other goodly peoples beneath the waves, (and in theory, above the waves as well, assuming that such heroes have a method of consistently surviving and moving freely underwater.)
As is fitting of their focus, these divine warriors alter their smite slightly so that it is aquatic and water-based evils that particularly suffer when they unleash their divine wrath upon them.
They also gain immunity to poison in addition to disease, useful given how many toxic foes there are beneath the waves.
Their divine bonds also vary, with those that bond with their weapons eschewing elemental damage to instead improve their weapon’s performance in water. Meanwhile, those that choose a mount must bond with a creature suitable for the waves, big enough to cling to while it swims, though they thankfully do not limit you on this as long as it makes sense.
Krakens, like their mundane cephalopod kin and many other creatures, use grappling and constriction as weapons, and so their aura blesses them and those nearby with the ability to slip free of grapples with surprising ease.
With no ability to magically grant freedom of movement, this archetype is pretty much exclusive to the aquatic playable ancestries unless you’re willing to invest a lot in magical solutions. That being said, it’s a pretty good way to alter the abilities of a paladin to better serve being underwater. Definitely consider it if you’re playing both an aquatic ancestry and a paladin, and if the campaign takes place at least a considerable bit underwater.
The lore for the archetype states that these warriors must balance hunting the monsters of the deep with protecting their people from them, but I find that’s primarily what the paladin experience is like: remembering that you are a defender of the people first, and not abandon them to chase down the wicked out of bloodlust and zealotry.
The southern part of Malgalos Rainforest opens up into a river delta where the massive mangrove trees rise out of the silt, and the waters run deep indeed in places. Long have the vanara of that region held alliance with the tritons of the deeper water, and a few have even learned a few arts from them, using magic to join them as defenders of the continental shelf, fighting off creatures from darker waters.
Though he dislikes the facility on principal, the kraken slayer Shophis has agreed to attend the grand opening of Balkas the Inscruitable’s underwater palace, which comes complete with a menagerie with simulated environments where monsters from around the world are kept, such as bloodbrush from the Sanaan Desert, and so on. However, Balkas’ underwater jewel has raise the interest of several underwater powers that seek to either destroy it, or worse, claim it for their own.
For generations, the kraken slayer order of the merfolk city of Angilas has only been so in name only, being no krakens sighted in the region for nearly two centuries. However, just because they are not seen does not mean they are not present, and the recent arrival of a group of adventurers may force the hand of the clandestine cephalopod that has been manipulating their society from the shadows.

Whoa, very intense longing to be a rainwing today. Just had a sudden craving to be a dragon chilling in the rainforest chowing down on some ripe juicy fruits.
Idk if that was a kin thing or not, I've been questioning dragon properly for probably almost a year now and Pyrrhia is such a familiar comfort to me but when I questioned a wof kintype most of my focus was on sandwings. Sand/rain maybe? might be time to revisit that

Schiffentrückung
(Haebarik's power: 2 + 3 + 2d6->9 = 14; moving back in time a bit for this one, but I still had a dangling plot-thread so most of this happened 200 years ago in game time)
Previously, we spoke of the great Scout-King Wera, who sailed across the waves and was last seen sailing into the inner sea that misty Laasera engulfs. Wera, first cause of a thousand meetings between a thousand peoples, who will forevermore be hailed as the greatest Azure King, who delved into great danger to refind an old friend's kin. What happened to him?
Well, he died.
But before that, he sailed west, into the foggy bay encircled by Laasera, past islands of floating mangrove-root and the transient fiefdoms of ohmlings, ever closer to the heart of the rainforest, ever closer to the great golden city that the rumors told him of.
Instead, he finds a flooded crater crested with ruins. Anything of beauty or value was long since picked off the crumbled walls and diffused through the forest in a chain of thefts and murders. No trace remains of the original inhabitants: the few Atai survivors having long since moved on.
Wera could have declared his self-imposed quest impossible. He could have turned back, to the city not yet named after him, and be hailed as a hero. He could have passed on his ship, and lived in splendor the rest of his life: none would dare challenge his boldness after this great journey. But he does not.
He continues to sail the coast, searching for any sign of passage, exchanging gifts with the few local tribes so they may serve as scouts. He learns the lay of the land and leads expeditions through the forest, chasing after any hints of Atai presence. Even as an unknown disease takes hold of him, as ache and fever condemn him to a bed, he continues looking, continues to peer over maps and chart new courses.
And it works. Hundreds of Ataila he finds, some living among humans, some settled in tiny encampments, some camping as solitary hermits. They are brought before his sickbed, where the deathly-ill king offers them a new home, across the waves, new and holy and safe. His tales are, by this point, based more on fever dreams than Messonir maps, but somehow none disbelieve his claims.
And so they sail south, ship packed with Ataila (who, thankfully, need not eat), guided by the ever-weakening instructions of the savior-captain-king. Past Incarien they go, past Tuula, past those volcanic islands that were Erland's first mark on the world. The wind always seems to favor their sails, and though the journey is not without peril, it is a swift one.
Land is sighted: a new land, poorly marked even on their charts, of tall peaks and dense forest, of misty plateaus and green hills. A crewsman rushes to the captain's bedchambers to report the good news, only to find him dead, a smile on his face.
With a mix of gratitude and sorrow, the Ataila disembark, and begin construction of a new city, the first in this realm. They call it Kaluutalo: the second house of the Ataila.
And what of Wera's crew? They swear an oath of secrecy and make the distant journey back to human lands. In every port they stay but briefly, speaking not a word of the Atai. At last, they return to Palk, where they sorrowfully report the death of the king, and beg the queen to let them stay aboard his ship for one more night, so they may hold a wake for his soul: this request is granted.
But with the next dawn, they and the ship are gone, having departed under cover of night. Vessels are launched in pursuit, but the royal flagship still bears the dragon-wing sails crafted by the first king Palk, and no lesser ship can catch up to it. Aboard the flagship are the sailors, their families, and one particular soul, smuggled out of the palace during the starlit night.
They retrace their journey, outrunning news of their flight at every port, and at last return to Kaluutalo. They will never leave: this land is theirs to settle, too.
And so Vainaa, Atai-diplomat of the Azure Reach, is reunified with her long-lost people, of which some still remember her name, and may pay respects to the remains of Wera, who to them was pupil and master and hero all.
In later generations, the humans are quick to take up worship of Velarië, and come to honor her for the creation of land and life both. But they likewise worship the long-dead captain, who they hold to be half-divine in nature.
At the center of their city, still floating in the harbor, is the royal flagship still. It serves as the holiest of their temples, manned and maintained by a select priesthood, and still bears the blessed sails that once served as Möpatäriäle's wings.
And enshrined in the captain's quarters, dressed in full regalia and preserved in golden resin, lies the body of Wera. His worshippers know that one day, when his people need him most, he shall re-awaken. He shall open his eyes, and brush aside his amber shell, and assume command of his ship once more; and they shall be ready to sail with him where they must.
(Create Order (4) among the Atai (with a few humans mixed in there) to create the Devotees of the Captain-King, then Command Race (3) to have them found a city in the Forgotten Lands.
The order's actual tenets are a mix of the more altruistic Seeker values with a strain of apocalyptic Atai beliefs mixed in, emphasizing charity, sacrifice, and the value of all life.

Exploring Skyrim Part V: Khajiit, Bretons, and Orcs, Oh My!  A Character Primer for Adventurers of All Ages
Hi! This is Tim O. from the Treehouse. When I’m not helping our multilingual teams localize games I sometimes enjoy stealing mammoth cheese bowls and collecting Dragon Priest masks, which is to say I enjoy playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
This open-world game was created for exploration. From snow-capped peaks and thundering waterfalls to rugged highlands and fast-flowing rivers, the world calls out to adventurers, enticing them and encouraging them to take roads less traveled, or throw caution to the wind and abandon roads altogether.
Tumblr media
In our last few posts, Lindsey and James provided some background on character archetypes, skills, and skill trees, and that’s all sure to come in handy. Before you pack up your broadswords and spell tomes, however, you need to decide which race you want your character to be, because who you are will impact how you play.
Races and Playstyle
There are ten playable races in Skyrim. Each race has its own history, culture, and origin within the continent of Tamriel. The race you choose may influence how NPC characters throughout the land interact with you. Additionally, each race has its own natural aptitudes, initial bonuses, and abilities to boost your chances of survival. When creating your character, the skill statistics of each race are something to be considered as they lend themselves to certain playstyles. That being said, all of the skills in the game can be developed over time, so the most important thing to do is to create the character you want—the race you choose does not lock you into a specific playstyle. So, while Argonians make great thieves because they are naturally-gifted at opening locks and picking pockets, and Bosmer get a jump-start on becoming elite archers due to their affinity for bows, you still have all the freedom in the world to choose whatever combination of race and playstyle your heart desires. If you’re bound and determined to be a Khajiit magic-user, there’s nothing stopping you. You may need to work a bit harder in the beginning, but if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.
The Playable Races
Tumblr media
High Elves (Altmer) – High Elves hail from the Summerset Isles located off the southwestern coast of the main continent. High elves are one of the oldest races of Tamriel and are as proud of their heritage as they are of their distinct physiology. They are the tallest of the playable races in Skyrim, they’re slender in build, and they have golden-hued skin and prominently pointed ears. High Elves are a very precise people and have rules for just about everything including marriage, architecture, and even table manners. When it comes to the arcane arts, high elves are unparalleled, being the most skilled of all the races of Tamriel. They are born with magical abilities outstripping other races and can even regenerate Magicka, the energy used to cast spells, at an accelerated pace once per day.
Tumblr media
Argonians – Argonians are a reptilian race originating from the southeastern swampland rainforest of Black Marsh, which boasts great inland waterways and impenetrable swamps. This province also is subjected to a unique weather pattern that some have described as “an inferno of foul-smelling brown rain,” often accompanied by heavy thunder and fog. Secretive and intelligent, the Argonians are excellent at guerrilla tactics, unsurprising given their swampy homeland. Argonians are the most skilled race at lockpicking, though they also excel in other stealth and thief-based skills as well. Argonian racial abilities include rapid health regeneration, which can be used once per day, and resistance to disease. Their ability to breathe underwater also offers a natural advantage in watery terrain.
Tumblr media
Wood Elves (Bosmer) – The Wood Elves of Tamriel call the mangrove swamps and semi-tropical rainforests of Valenwood home. Wood Elves prefer simple lives in the heart of nature, eschewing over-developed cities and living in accordance with their Green Pact, which prohibits the use of wood as a building material and restricts them to a meat-based diet. They are famed for their skill with bows and are known as the best archers in the land. Their natural stealth also gives them skill bonuses excellent for thieving. Wood Elves are resistant to disease and poison, and they have the ability to command a wild creature once per day.
Tumblr media
Bretons – The northwest province of High Rock is the homeland of the Bretons, who claim both human and elven ancestry. While the Bretons get their physical appearance from their human forefathers, they have inherited their affinity for magic from their elven progenitors. Bretons are known to be passionate, intelligent and possess a seemingly instinctive bond with magic. It is this bond which accounts for their ability to resist magic that would devastate most races, and even absorb Magicka from hostile spells once per day.
Tumblr media
Dark Elves (Dunmer) – Dark Elves come from Morrowind in the northeast corner of Tamriel. Morrowind is a harsh and strange land, its flora and fauna having evolved to survive the ash storms generated by the Red Mountain, the largest volcano on Tamriel. Dark Elves have glowing red eyes and grayish skin. They are taller than their Wood Elf cousins but shorter than the high elves. Their abilities also land in the middle-ground between their kin – they’re better magic users than Wood Elves, and stealthier than High Elves. Dark Elves are particularly adept at destructive magic, possessing a natural resistance to fire, and can invoke a special ability which inflicts damage to all nearby opponents once per day.
Tumblr media
Imperial – Imperials are the ruling race of the powerful province of Cyrodiil located in the heart of Tamriel. Imperials are among the wealthiest and most highly educated of races, and are also known for their military discipline. They are of typical height for humans and have a complexion somewhere between Nords and Redguards. Imperials are skilled at both combat and magic, making them ideally suited for hybrid playstyles. It’s easy to imagine an Imperial casting destructive magic with one hand while the other wields a longsword. They also have the ability to calm human characters once a day through the power of their voices.
Tumblr media
Khajiit – The cat-like Khajiit inhabit the province of Elsweyr on the southern central coast of Tamriel. Khajiit are the most agile of all the races on the continent, but as they are one of only two “beast races,” they are often treated with distrust and derision. It is perhaps their position as second-class citizens along with their natural stealth and superior unarmed combat skills that lead many of them to become thieves and assassins. Khajiit also possess enhanced night vision, which they can use an unlimited number of times each day.
Tumblr media
Nord – Nords are the dominant human race of Skryim, the northernmost province of Tamriel. Nords are the tallest and most powerfully built of the human races, and are typically fair in complexion. Family, honor, and glory are valued above all else in Nord culture. They are natural warriors adept at wielding both one- and two-handed weapons. As you might expect given their frigid homeland, Nords are resistant to frost. They also have the ability to drive away enemies for short periods of time with a fierce battle cry once per day.
Tumblr media
Orc (Orsimer) – Orcs are native to mountain ranges in both High Rock and Hammerfell. Orc strongholds are scattered across Skyrim, but only those who have become “blood-kin” are welcome inside. Orcs have a complexion that ranges from light green to dark brown, possess heavily muscled frames, and are second only to the High Elves in height. They are also the only race to have tusks. Orcs are famed throughout Tamriel as warriors and blacksmiths, and have a natural affinity for one- and two-handed weapon wielding, as well as smithing and enchanting. Orcs have the ability to send themselves into a fierce rage that increases the damage they inflict and decreases the damage they take for a short period of time each day.
Tumblr media
Redguard – Redguards are the main inhabitant of the northwest province of Hammerfell, an arid land dominated by deserts and rough mountains. Redguards have darker complexions, are of medium height, and possess sturdy builds. They are known for their skill and versatility as warriors and are exceptional at combining one-handed weapons with shields. In keeping with their rugged homeland, Redguards have a strong constitution, which manifests itself in a resistance to poison. They are able to regenerate stamina at an incredible rate once per day, allowing them to attack with great ferocity.
More than Human
In addition to the playable races of Skyrim, you can also become more than human by contracting diseases, which transform you into a vampire or werewolf. Each of these conditions has advantages and disadvantages, so you’ll want to weigh them before allowing yourself to be seduced by the music of the children of the night.
Vampires – To become a vampire the player must acquire the disease “Sanguinare Vampiris” and stay infected for longer than three in-game days. There are four stages of severity to the disease, though drinking blood can keep the curse at bay. However, the more severe the disease becomes, the more spells and abilities become available to the player. Vampires suffer from a weakness to sunlight, but are fully resistant to disease and poison, harder to detect when sneaking, and  more powerful at casting illusion magic. Vampirism has its own skill tree and perks, which include things like detecting all creatures, transforming into an invulnerable mist, and conjuring a gargoyle to fight for you. Vampirism can be cured and contracted multiple times.
Werewolves –  A player can become a werewolf by contracting the disease “Lycanthropy”, which grants the ability to transform into a monstrous and powerful wolf-like beast for a limited time once per day, which can be extended by feeding off corpses. There are cures for Lycanthropy, but many are costly (unless you want to become a vampire), and once cured, it cannot be contracted again. Lycanthropy also has its own skill tree and perks, from increased damage to an extended howl range. Spoiler Alert: those who want to become werewolves best look to the Companions of Whiterun for guidance.
Skyrim is a game filled with choices; what to do, where to go, how many mammoth cheese bowls to collect. It’s all up to you. The first, and perhaps most important choice you’ll make is how you want to play. Are you a straight-up brawler? A long-distance sniper? Do you prefer magic or heavy armor and cold hard steel? Think about the playstyle that suits you best and then choose your character’s race. That choice may make the beginning of your adventure a bit easier or it may not, and it doesn’t have to. The important thing is to be you. Now lace up your boots and grab your supplies. Skyrim awaits!

how did you find out you were other kin?
oh man, this is one of those questions that's hard but easy to answer at the same time. Especially bc I'm super bad with words.Honestly at first I didn't even know until a friend explained to me what otherkin was exactly, and even then some of them I was in denial in for a while. the first kintype o discovered was a dragon though, and it was due to random memories I had that I knew for sure I never did. Like...... I've never been in a rainforest before. I've never chased down animals to eat before. I've also never flew before, not even on a plane and that was a dead giveaway of it's own. Then there's the.... Hecking..... If if the correct term is spectral limbs or what but there's that like..... sometimes I feel the horns, but I don't have horns. Sometimes I feel the tail and wings bit I don't....... have them....I ended up meditating on these memories and feelings and such from it which.... took a while, as I'm not the best at meditating, but upon doing that, I realized hey..... shit man...... I used to be a dragon...... how fucking cool is that..... I uhI'm really bad at words so I hope this was able to help you aaaaa......

It was another day. Another morning of paperwork and requests. It looked like their sending to Dragonhome was finally starting to return results. That meant invitations and interviews, and she could tell the clan that progress was being made on that front and a structure would be built with their concerns in mind.
There weren't many items that she was not already in the middle of addressing. Hart had taken up hunting, and Kea was dealing with the gardens and foraging, Equinox still fished... Insects were becoming an issue with Elaidos gone, but Telos found it hard to believe the clan needed an official insect catcher.
Camellia had given her temporary resignation as Arcane Representative. She would take up the task again if possible, but at the end of her pilgrimage, her intention was to stay and watch over the graves of their fallen in the Isles. To ensure that they would go undisturbed and their final resting place would be well-kept for the day when friends and family could come to see them.
Telos was glad that Camellia had told her in a letter. It would have been an emotional discussion to have in person. All it meant was that an acting Arcane Representative had to be chosen. Speaking of, Azricai was no longer the acting Wind Representative. Arcanus tipped her off that their old one was at the Nebula Guild, but that she was infamously lazy. It was better than nothing, Telos thought, but they could definitely wait until they were a little more stable.
There was a fascinating letter brought in by Safiri. Something about a partnership with a clan called Skyboat when they were next in the area. They sounded promising, and Telos hoped they were in good condition to begin making allies by the time this mysterious Skyboat clan was in the territory again.
Her day droned on, until the first audience...
Tumblr media
"I hear your clan has need of the law."
Telos glanced up, and let her eyes drop back to her scrolls. She could already tell this man was going to need a tight leash. It was all over him, posture, eyes, and voice like glaciers shifting below the ocean. Carnelian had operated as a freelance detective, so when he was excessive it didn’t matter. But this was going to be Arcanus’ replacement, so he had to be reigned in quickly.
"We have law," she said bluntly. "We need an enforcer, fair and just. And so we have invited you, Penitence."
"You'll find none more punishing."
"I don't recall mentioning I wanted punishing." She folded her hands. "This clan is tetchy and emotional. I would like you to remind them that they cannot devolve into acting like beasts during this interlude between infrastructures. But that is not permission to be harsh or unforgiving with them."
"I see."
She tapped a claw, and her jaw shifted with a soft crunch. "Do you know who you answer to, Penitence?"
The guardian squinted suspiciously. "You?"
"You truly believe that?"
"You're the queen."
"So I am. And I'm beginning to feel a bit insulted. It's very rude to hide your face before any head of clan."
Penitence glanced at Arcanus, suddenly a little less confused about why the obvious knight wasn't wearing a helmet of any sort. He flipped the pelt back over his horns.
"My apologies. I meant you no disrespect."
"I'm sure."
"If I may, it's my understanding that you have criminals already among your rank."
"Saga is being dealt with in a manner that suits the situation."
"I was referring primarily to Lutia."
Arcanus and Telos shared a glance and looked at him incredulously. "You want to arrest Lutia?"
"She destroyed the home of the previous clan, is that not worth a punishment?"
"Her son had been killed and her deity grossly disrespected."
Penitence held his head high. "A crime of passion is still a crime. Every criminal has a story, it doesn't change the letter of the law."
Telos sighed. "If you want to try her, I invite you to, and I will make sure I send someone to clean your remains up and have a package sent to your kin."
"I'm not a fool, I know that she is beyond me alone. My question is why you don't take action against her."
"Because she is as hurt as any of us and deserves a chance to heal."
"She is dangerous and you do your clan a disservice allowing her to roam freely. They’d sleep better with her on ice."
"Bestealcian." The coatl morphed out of the shadow and pressed  the curve of her scythe just under Penitence’s jaw. "If you do not understand the fine nuances of the situation I am asking you to handle, please see yourself out of my territory. Otherwise, be fair and just. Being unforgiving and rigid is how Lutia came to be how she is right now."
Telos closed the distance between them, until they were practically nose to nose. "You are protecting my clan from itself, because Arcanus has dedicated himself to being my personal protector. You answer to him. He answers to me. And if I hear anything about you being excessive with my people, or getting more ideas above your station, I will be the one to put you on ice. Do I make myself clear?"
He swallowed. "Yes, Queen Telos."
"Glad we reached an understanding."
Later, on her way back from visiting Telos wasn't sure she had done the right thing during the audience with Penitence. Several times afterward she caught Arcanus glancing at her, but he was used to being neutral to the political decisions of his charge. Figuring out whether he approved or disproved was impossible.
But what should she have done? They needed someone to keep the peace, and they needed to be strict yes and intimidating absolutely, but heartless? Someone who would see them act out out of anger and grief and loss and punish them for it? That was not what this clan needed right now.
She'd strangle Penitence herself if she caught him man-handling anyone.
“Honestly Mamblory you’re being very harsh about this.”
Telos stopped, and listened. She could make out a heated discussion. She didn’t recognize all the voices, but for certain she knew the three bogsneaks, Turan, Generous, and Equinox were present.
Mamblory was not to be soothed. “Why shouldn’t I be? Her and her weird machine and test tube family were how this all happened.”
“Opal was how this all happened,” Coagulum corrected. "She'd have come and gone to exaltation with Fragment like all the rest if not for his tinkering."
"It's only because of his tinkering she came to the clan in the first place!"
"Mamblory we're bogsneaks, do you really think test tube family is a stone you want to throw?"
"Shut up Miscedence! Yes I want to damn well throw it, I'll throw as many as I want because They Aren't Bogsneaks!"
"I don't think it's fair to hold her family ties against her," said a voice Telos recognized as Turan's. "She's doing what she thinks is right, though I can't say I know if it's any good yet."
"I think Lady Azricai should be in charge," Copernicus mumbled sulkily.
"Yeah, Azricai was always dependable. She's a little scary but she's good at making decisions and Shard--"
"Hart," Turan hissed.
"Hart, whatever. He trusted her. They all trusted her."
Coagulum sniggered. "Yeah, but Copernicus only thinks Azricai should be in charge because she helped him get out from under mummy's claws."
There was a hiss and the murmur of offense. "Don't talk about Rainforest like that! She's dead!"
"Why not? Sorry to say it Copernicus, I know she was still your ma, but she was mean and abusive and it wasn't just you that had to deal with it."
Copernicus said nothing, but Telos saw him storm off with tears in his eyes, and Miscedence chased after him.
"You didn't have to say it right in front of him," Mamblory growled. "Yeah she was a pill, but you know he's sensitive."
Coagulum snorted. "Right, right, better go clean this up..."
"Squabblers." It was hard to tell who that was. It had a certain pitch to it that suggested a nocturne, but wasn't Alchemilla's voice. "You complain but offer no solutions."
"You think Telos is in the right?"
"I think she has unchallengeable claim to the throne, but that she is not the most fit to rule."
"Alright then Harvestasha, who's your choice?"
"Pistis."
Turan made a noise of approval. "A light dragon, I see."
"It is so. But also a powerful entrepreneur and business woman with a multitude of connections."
There was a soft but highly emotional voice. "Don't you even think about it. My darling's kingdom is her spa, not an entire clan. It's not comparable."
"Alright, don't have a fit, Generous. You have to admit she's well liked and could be an excellent leader though."
"Hmph! You've never seen her try to hire someone. Her expectations are made of steel, and she'd have ever slacker hating her soon enough."
"Anyway," Mamblory interrupted. "Pistis isn't even blue blood. I'd at least want someone from the line."
"Then you're foolish."
"The rule is that we can't have the old dynasty in power," Turan reminded.
"Yeah, in the Isles. But we're not in the Isles. We're literally on the other side of the world! All I'm saying is that having somebody from the line would make me feel more confident."
"That's easy to say until you remember Lutia's part of the line too."
A silence washed over them, and they laughed nervously to dispel it.
"Clearly we wouldn't want Lutia. I mean, I'm sure she'd be great in theory but she's a little... unstable right now."
"Right. And not Brightrose, he's such a slacker."
"Cloudwhyte would be good."
Equinox sighed. Until then she had been quietly listening to the discussion, but she seemed to be getting annoyed. "Cloudwhyte has never held dreams of the crown or leadership and all of you know it."
"Woah there, Equinox we're just spitballing. Do you think Telos deserves to lead us?"
"I think she IS leading us to the best of her ability and you're all being really ungrateful."
"No, no, we're grateful we just..."
They subsided into an irritable silence.
"You just want your old life back," Equinox said softly. "I know. But don't take that out on Telos."
Turan hemmed softly. "You are surprisingly good at taking charge in a pinch, Equinox. I thought you did well in the Carrion Canyon too. Perhaps your blood would serve well here in the Sunbeam Ruins."
The temperature dropped rapidly, until frost showed on Equinox's spines. "Did you just praise me for being a relative to the old dynasty?"
"Yes? You're distant of course, but--"
The frost hardened into spikes. "Don't. Don't you ever, after all that time you spent making sure I knew my place and didn't try to challenge your precious throne. Don't you EVER think I would let you get away with trying to pander and accept me NOW THAT IT’S CONVENIENT FOR YOU!"
Penitence arrived before Telos did. Equinox had done well to not lash out, but Penitence came between her immense form and the tiny, terrified pearlcatcher anyway.
"Let's not do anything we'll regret," he warned.
Equinox eyed him up and down. "Who are you supposed to be?"
"He's our new peacekeeper," said Telos. She rested a hand on Equinox's shoulder, taking the chill without flinching. "Please pay their insensitive words no mind."
"...Yes, my Lady." Equinox sniffled softly, and the ice on her spines  rapidly defrosted. "You should have known better Turan. You did this shit once before already. This was why Tawhaki and Kea hated you people too."
The angry ridgeback stormed off, and the group lingered for a moment in their embarrassment. Telos turned to them with an iron countenance. "If you have words for me, feel free to say them. Otherwise, please disperse."
All but two made themselves scarce. Dalma, who had only offered a few de-escalating words, and Fletch, who had said nothing at all. The coatl met the eyes of the guardian with spirit that couldn't be bowed.
"You are queen," she said finally. "And I think there is none better than you. But you are dispassionate. Your will is a mere flickering candle compared to what it was before." In spite of her words, Fletch bowed so deeply it was almost prostration. "I sincerely hope that you find a way to burn brightly again."
Telos watched her go before turning to Dalma. "And you?"
He shrugged. "I don't know, my Lady. Even among the Sh--- Among the old dynasty, not every ruler was fit. You are trying. How can I know what that will lead to?"
"Do you remember much, Dalma? The official records were lost to the Tangled Wood with Obscura."
"I was a teacher, and the line of succession was the first subject I usually taught."
"I think I will have need of you. Keep an eye out for a summons."
Her eye fell on Penitence as she passed back toward her place on the Promenade.
"...Good work."

I've been feeling a little down lately, although it has nothing to do with my break up trauma..
Are there any other dragons out there who lived...relatively different lives culture wise than most dragons? Most dragon kin ive known or see nowadays were solitary, hoarded treasure, liked burning things down and fighting.
As far as i remember, my kind in the rainforest lived in village tribes, like small tight knit neighbourhoods. We liked and thrived in the presence of others, ate mostly fruit and meat (which we would roast with honeys and spices), and we trained to fight, but if we fought it was only ever to knockouts and never death, unless there was an invasion of outsiders. We hoarded treasure, but it was always shared between the village entirely or sometimes smaller hoards were shared and curated between mates. I don't think my people were like most dragons, culturally, and i carry that lifestyle into my current form still. Those needs.
But i wonder sometimes. If other dragon kin find me boring or weak or overly affectionate. I wonder if i fit in with the destructive, bad-ass, no nonsense dragons with mountains of gold and open air to explore completely alone.
I wonder if other dragon kin of my kind, or at least similar to mine, are out there...
