What can I say, we really love dogs. 😁 . . Dogs dont do ballet by Anna Kemp is about Biff, the dog who dreams of becoming a ballerina. But obviously, you know that dogs cant do ballet, right? Or do they? . . What we loved 💙The writing! The dry humor totally baited me! 💙Illustrations that highlight emotions- be it dad's face when he is angry or poor, sad Biff. 💙The story in itself, although improbable, has so many teachable moments. What baby V loved Following the adventures and hunting the camouflaged pug when he slyly follows his owner to her ballet lessons. This is a great book to really dig deep and challenge stereotypes. For example, Biff isnt allowed to wear a tutu only because others think he shouldnt be doing it. Hello dreamers! As promised, sharing with you some tips on how to raise a reader.💖 But first, a story. 😁 I wasn't fond of reading when I was young. I was scared to move up to 1st grade because I wasn't sure if I can really read.(Oh hello, self-doubt.) Lied to my mother when she told me to go to the library and borrow The Little Prince (sorry nay!😅) I was already in college when i discovered i can finish a YA novel and that the library is my sanctuary. Books changed my life. Felt like i opened a magical door to different worlds. Promised myself na 'pag nagkaanak ako, i'll give him a book and hope he opens that door too. Fast forward to when we were expecting our little dreamer, I was looking forward to bedtime stories, see him read on his own and be fascinated with written words. But the question is, how do you teach a child how to read? So i googled and armed myself with info but life happened and i had to choose between cooking brunch or teaching a baby phonics. Decided to just do what feels right : ( eat haha!😆) let go of phonetics, build a reading habit and hope for the best ! 🌈 So we read together, same book or not. We read everyday, 15 mins, okay na. Read anything; books, brochures, back of the cereal box. We let our son choose what to read. Jacob was 6 when he asked if he can read Twilight. Told him he can read anything. After 2 chapters, he realized he's not ready for vampires and went back to Capt. Underpants. 😅 We read aloud with feelings and sound effects.😁 The key is to wow them and boost engagement. My hubby is the best on this one. He can be a monster and a prince in one breath, wow.😆 Read for survival: sometimes we pretend we can't see road signs and the lo needs to read for us or else we'll get lost. We really got lost a few times but we had fun.😉 And of course, read for fun. Not a believer of book reports but when Jacob was 5, he read a lot so he can make "book reviews" 😅➡. That's his joy kaya go lang. When it comes to board books for wee ones, right up there with the hilarity of Sandra Boynton, for me, are the brightly coloured books produced by author-illustrator Todd Parr. Along with some wonderful books addressing family, feelings, and other important topics, I think my absolute favourites are Parr's whimsical forays into flat-out silliness, like "Underwear Do's and Don'ts" (1999). With his trademark childlike artwork, all primary colours, stick figures, and bold black outlines, Parr takes us through a series of ridiculously silly "rules" about what to do with underwear that will have kids and adults alike in fits of giggles. Our newest book to the Claros yellow bookshelf is TWINS by @mrvarianjohnson and illustrated by @shannondrewthis !!! My little firecracker is trying to make her best angry face to match the cover. How did she do? She is really turning the corner from reading picture book to graphic novels. We just got this today and she is almost done. Now I will be hearing about twins Maureen and Francine Carter for the next couple of weeks. Because she will read this over and over and over again. And I am here for it. The book starts with little girl Isha being taken to new year party by her parents where her aunt tells her a story about the different ways to celebrate New year. Right from Bihu in Assam, Baisakhi in Punjab, Vishu in Kerala, Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Navroz by Gudi Padwa, Lasoong in Sikkim the book describes the way in which people in different regions welcome the New year and the various traditions followed. It's a great way to teach kids, which makes them easy to understand. 📝 Breakfasts of India Colourfully illustrated book that showcases the breakfast eaten by people in different regions of India. The kid in the book eats dosa and Chutney assuming he is from Tamilnadu, then starts navigating to different regions to see what the friends eat. A culinary journey that begins with Misal pav from Maharashtra, Dal Pakhwan by Sindhi, Methi thepla from Gujarat, Mirchi BADA and pyaz kachori from Rajasthan, Akuri pav by parsi, Aloo paratha from Punjab, Chira doi Gur from Assam, Siddu and green chutney from Himachal, Gahat paratha from Uttarakhand, lavaas from Kashmir, luchi from Bengal, to finally Upma and pesarettu from Hyderabad.
