Ramalina petrina
Appalachian trail lichen
In the midst of my academia-induced woes, I often dream of being one of those people who gives up everything to rediscover myself by walking a Camino, or climbing a mountain, or hiking along the Appalachian trail, but then those damned lichens always pull me back in. But it is nice to know that even if I decide to do any of those things, there will still be lichens like R. petrina along the way. You just can't escape these little guys--a thought as reassuring as it is mildly threatening.

Ramalina menziesii (Lace Lichen)
South-eastern Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. March 10, 2024
One of the few lichens I really wanted to see on this trip, because its distribution is strictly restricted to the western coast of North America. I'm not sure when (or if) I'll be here again, so my priority is these Pacific coast lichens.

#2204 - Ramalina celasti - Cartilage Lichen
Tumblr media
AKA Palmetto Lichen in North America, but from the growth form rather than preferred substrate. Originally described as Parmelia celastri, from specimens found in South Africa, on Celastrus pyracanthus (since renamed Putterlickia pyracantha). Despite that, it has a pantropical distribution, growing on bark or wood.
In New Zealand it grows exclusively on the North Island, and has a rock-dwelling form found exclusively along the coasts, with quite different morphology to tree-dwelling specimens.
There are an estimated 240 species in the genus, which are sometimes called Strap Lichens.

FOTD #102 : lace lichen! (ramalina menziesii)
lace lichen (also fishnet lichen) is a fruticose epiphytic lichen in the family ramalinaceae. it is found across north america & plays multiple important ecological roles :-) the indigenous kawaiisu people of california reportedly used it for its magical properties*.
the big question : can i bite it?? nah - it is mostly inedible for humans, but it is an important food source for deer in the coast range of california !!

r. menziesii description :
"this lichen grows up to a meter long, hanging from bark & twigs in a distinctive net-like or lace-like pattern. it is white to light green."
[images : source, source & source] [fungus description : source]
*so, this was one of the first recorded instances of people using this lichen !! apparently, they would place it in water to bring rain, & place it in fire to repel thunder or lightning :-) the kashaya pomo people of northern california would also use it, but as a "sanitary material" (which i assume means like toilet paper?).

a beautiful smorgasbord for the lichen lovers
------------------------
dude lichens on a coastline will just look like this and nobody says anything and the trees will just drop full branches that look like this into the mcdonalds parking lot and STILL nobody says anything. the ramalina in the first pic has praying mantis geometry. its just alien flora moments like i just dont know what to say about branches like this

EDIT: A couple of IDs thanks to iNaturalist!
5th image: Cartillage lichen 》 Ramalina complanata
Upper specimen in 9th and 10th images: Golden-eye lichen 》 Teloschistes chrysophthalmus
My first lichen IDs!!
-----------------
It was a morning for lichens today!
I don't know much about them at the moment, but I'm very excited to learn more. Just look how beautiful they are!
I haven't the knowledge to identify any of these but if anyone else does I'd certainly love to hear. 🔍

Scrolling through Ramalina sp. on iNaturalist, and I feel personally offended by the common name of this wonderful lichen 😅
