makerrcat made me watch John Wick, and my hot take about it is that the entire plot of the movie is impossible, not because of the action sequences and cool fight scenes, and not because of the awesome mob hotel run by a dude named Charon, but because it's illegal to pump your own gas in the state of New Jersey, so John never could have had that interaction with Viggo's son at the gas station

Friendly reminder that the only reason Genesis is the antagonist of Crisis Core is because Zack is with Shinra. Literally.
Once he's on the run, once Genesis knows that Zack can't help him, he literally brings Hollander to Gongaga for Zack to kill—he tells Zack what Hollander is planning under the guise of it being a joint effort, but once Hollander runs off, Genesis then tells Zack what he intends to do. He talks to him about Loveless and the Lifestream, he shoves a Banora White into his hands when Zack charges at him, and then he leaves. Hollander is left behind—in Zack's hometown, his own turf, so there's nowhere to run and nowhere to hide—allowing Zack to enact poetic justice at last by striking down Angeal's birth father with the very sword that the man who actually raised Angeal died to earn, the sword that honorless Gillian said represented all the honor the Hewleys had left.
And then, finally realizing what's actually going on, Zack sets out to to Banora to save Genesis from dying.
There's no point after Modeoheim that Genesis outright attacks Zack until he's cured at the Light of Doom; there, he calls Zack First Class SOLDIER even though he's not anymore, because Genesis isn't trying to strike down Zack, he's trying to reclaim the right to the only title he's ever had that felt worth anything, and he's trying to take the burden of that title from Zack.
If he wins, Genesis takes the guilt of killing both Angeal and Sephiroth—because he doesn't know Cloud's role, he doesn't know that Zack wasn't the one to strike Sephiroth down, he doesn't even know Cloud's name. Conversely, if he loses, then it's confirmation that Zack is the hero of the story, truly and completely, and that's all right too. If that's how the story ends, that's how it ends. (Minerva intervenes, pulls Genesis from the duel, and he never gets to see the ending. The final act, as in his beloved ancient poem, remains a mystery.)
Genesis is the main antagonist of Crisis Core, but he's never been the bad guy. The entirety of Final Fantasy VII has a single monolith of villainy, and that's always been—and will always be—Shinra. Shinra made the Reactors and dug up Jenova. Shinra made Genesis, Sephiroth, Angeal, and DeepGround. Shinra burned Kalm, Banora, and (partially) Nibelheim. Shinra used any corpse they found or made as research fodder. Shinra killed the last fullblooded Cetra and drove her only daughter to a place where the only way to save the people she loved was through her death. Shinra is the bad guy.
Zack is with Shinra for the majority of the game, and thus the story behaves accordingly. Shinra's enemies are Zack's enemies, because that's the side he's on. Shinra sees Avalanche as enemies, too, but no one ever refers to Barret or Elfe as "irredeemably evil" the way they do Genesis. Barret dresses up his quest for revenge in the guise of saving the planet, but all that matters to him is that anyone even remotely connected to the company suffers the way he's suffered. Elfe allowed Fuhito to experiment on people, to take the corpses of SOLDIER and make undead weapons out of them, violating the sanctity of their final rest and denying them entry to the Lifestream altogether.
"Genesis experimented on his men!" It was a desertion, not an abduction. People who become Copies when they aren't properly enhanced don't get the same enhanced abilities as a First and they degrade very quickly, we see that in Hollander and Lazard—meaning that every single Genesis Copy was one of those SOLDIER Seconds or Thirds that defected with Genesis of their own free will in Wutai after he grew a wing and the world turned upside-down. Genesis' men loved him and they went along willingly.
When Genesis locks himself up in the Light of Doom, his last hope for a cure, he has one last Copy in there with him. When Zack unlocks the gate, he's attacked by one last Copy, even though Genesis has been waiting for him, he's not antagonistic toward him anymore, he hasn't been for a long time.
Genesis took that last Copy, a man with a horrible disease who is definitely too far gone to save, and brought him along to the Light of Doom in the hopes that maybe, maybe things could be set right. When Zack unlocks the gate, that man throws himself at him to protect Genesis, because this is his last chance and Genesis' men love him.
When Zack fights Genesis' Weapon avatar and is attacked by incomplete and twisted ghosts of Genesis Copies, magical inhuman wisps that hold him back while Genesis heals—they're in the Lifestream then, the Light of Doom pulled them both in. Those Copies are literally the ghosts of Genesis' men, unable to diffuse into the Lifestream because of their Jenova infection, fighting to protect him from beyond the grave. Genesis' men love him. They want to save him. They went with him willingly.
"Genesis killed his parents!" The parents who lied to him his entire life in order to keep getting a paycheck from Shinra? The parents that funded his fanclub as a form of marketing for a company that literally wouldn't exist without Genesis' world-changing contribution to food processing as a teenager? Those parents?
Genesis has a little shrine in the Banora Underground where he keeps all his awards and achievements—a little desk with a lantern in an unfinished stone tunnel. They survived the bombing of Banora because they weren't in the house; the chalkboard has sketches of what would clearly become the Banora brand logo, which was presumably made about a decade prior to the Nibelheim Incident, not long after Genesis figured out how to make Banora White juice shelf stable, not long before he left for Midgar to enlist.
Having all the proof of every good thing Genesis has ever done shoved into a tunnel under his hometown, hidden from the public, while his family raked in huge amounts of wealth based on those achievements, indicates quite clearly that Genesis' parents were the exact opposite of good and loving.
But he buried them anyway, didn't he?
Genesis may not be a particularly good person, but he's never been evil, he's never been the bad guy. Genesis was right—more than that, he was justified. His methods were not. He did terrible things. He hurt and killed a lot of people.
But he was only ever the enemy because Shinra said he was. Genesis doesn't need a redemption arc because he already had one, and Minerva herself said he could serve the planet forever to prove it.

Me and @stargazing-zani were bored so have this list of what partner pokemon the ff7 crew would have
The Banora boys get the Applin variants. Genesis gets a Flapple and Angeal has an Appletun
Genesis also tries to deflect attention onto his much flashier Ceruledge in public tho
Angeal was also given an Aegislash by his father which he nicknamed Buster. Buster has seen too much as it’s passed down to Zack and then Cloud in turn, watching its partners suffer but unable to form the words to comfort them
Hojo tries and tries to get Sephiroth something big, ultra-powerful and intimidating, but Seph is set on the adorable Mew which found him and refused to leave his side. Still a mythical so Hojo lets him keep it but is very miffed
Cloud was adopted by a Galarian Zapdos bc chocobo. I don’t make the rules. I do feel like the character arc the Sobble line goes through fits him really well tho
Zack has an unevolved Rockruff for quite a while. When it eventually does evolve, no matter what time of day it is, it will inevitably evolve into Midday Lycanroc because Zack’s sunny personality is overwhelming
Aerith has a Tinkaton. They’re perfect for each other
I don’t know how to explain it but Mudsdale gives me Tifa vibes, also it was a powerhouse when I had it on my team and I love it
Hojo created a Mewtwo bc all other pokemon rejected him, but it immediately turned on its creator and murders him violently, preventing all problems and fixing everything without the need for time travel
Insane Seph got a Deoxys bc creepy alien. Maybe it is Jenova in this universe and starts corrupting him as soon as he gets it driving him insane
Rufus gets a Houndoom bc that’s basically what Darkstar is anyways
Cait Sith is basically just Meowth already, I don’t need to do much here. Maybe Perrserker to be the version from the Scotland area Pokemon game
Alternatively for Reeve I feel like Duraludon works, bc urban development and it reminds me of the Neo Midgar concepts
Heidegger gets either a Skuntank or a Granbull, idk which but vibes
Hehehe Vincent has a Cofagrigus
I bestow upon Yuffie the honor of Thievul. Loved it on my team and they both have the little shit vibes. She would also be an evil team grunt stealing everyone else’s pokemon tho, and honestly good for her go crazy Yuffie
I know for Kunsel it’s always the hack-y technology vibes. But consider. Always hiding behind a mask, never see his face. Mimikyu
Barret? Absol. Avalanche, impending disaster, perfect
I feel like Rude would like Urshifu
It would be absolutely hilarious to me then if Reno just had an Emolga
Scarlet with a Metagross
Why is Tseng so hard. Inteleon perhaps for the spy-y stuff
For Veld maybe a Wishiwashi for the Turk’s whole stronger in numbers found family thing
Oh dear god while writing this I thought too much about the implications of SOLDIER still existing in a world where pokemon battles replaced normal fighting. Maybe it was an experiment to splice human dna with pokemon to get humans to be able to fight using pokemon moves too? So like you go up against a SOLDIER, faint all 6 of their pokemon and think yay I’ve won, and then the SOLDIER just starts going after your pokemon themselves. They are their own 7th pokemon

Thinking in War Gods Au and how i want to preserve a bit of the original relationship Athena and Ares had by making younger Mishanks hate each other guts because of their base nature of Peace first vs Violence first and they don't know any better
But then they start to grow up and seeing the other in a different light because they are more alike than they originally thought. Maybe they will start as reluctant friends because their shared respect but Oh what's this, Shanks chose to kill someone in sight, when that aligns more with Mihawk's title? And Oh Mihawk protected someone, when that's supposedly to be Shanks' job?
And then they start crushing on each other and idk what would happen next but i think it's very cute

S1e4 Visiting Hours Pt.2
What is taking so long – Lamb, entering Standish’s bedroom uninvited.
Get out of my bedroom – Standish, angrily from her bed, still somewhat vulnerable from the flood of memories that have just rushed back to her.
What, you think I want to catch you in your underwear? – Lamb, mockingly.
But also – you’re the one making the conversation about underwear here buddy!!
Tumblr media
I imagine you’d like that. Almost as much as I’d like to see you in your nylon Y-fronts. – Standish
She’s busy putting her earrings on and returning his level of snark.
He’s still in the doorway, watching her, throws her purse down onto a chair.
Come on. NOW! – Lamb
Standish is seen hurrying out of the bedroom to the apartment door.
Lamb is eager to smoke with an unlit cigarette in his mouth, shifting his weight, ready to be on the move again.  Standish appears ready to join him but pauses to ask…
What was Taverner talking about? – Standish
She’s screwing with your head.  Look, you could leave with me now or with less friendly people later. It’s up to you. – Lamb
Standish resigns to follow his commands.  Is seen grabbing her coat and scarf, purse and phone.
No, leave the phone – Lamb.
She does.
They’re seen leaving her apartment, she turns off the light and locks the door.
Standish and Lamb are in the elevator, going down from her apartment, down to the lobby.  She is taking her hair out of her coat and thinks aloud… it’s River, isn’t it? Has he gone off the rails, and now we’re paying the price? – Standish
Well, not a million miles off – Lamb, he pauses
Baker’s been hurt, Moody’s dead. There’s probably a C&C out on all of us, Fuckers – Lamb
How badly hurt is Sid? – Standish asks
Not as badly hurt as Moody’s dead. Did you catch that bit? – eyebrows raised a bit, as Lamb tries to make her feel bad, again, probably just for his own amusement.
Jed Moody was always going to end badly, but I like Sid. – Standish
Jackson gives her a lingering look; the elevator dings and he steps out first.  He looks in both directions and then steps behind her as she walks out of the building.
Standish opens the door for Lamb.
He steps out first, but again falls in step behind her as they walk out, he lights his cigarette.
Standish adjusts her purse across her body and Lamb puts his lighter into his pocket.
Tumblr media
As they turn the corner and hear vehicle doors, you can see that Lamb moves his hand towards the small of her back. They are standing while Duffy and Webb approach.
Now Lamb goes to stand in front and Standish falls behind, looking away, looking down, avoiding eye contact and trying to remain invisible as Lamb threatens to break wrists. When Duffy slowly approaches Lamb to frisk him, the camera is on Standish and we see her with tight fists, blinking slowly and swallowing nervously as Webb approaches her.
Webb, you can drive. Ms. Standish you’re up front. Lamb, you’re in the back with me. – Duffy
Jackson nods while smoking and we see Standish, frozen in her spot until Lamb looks at her and begins to walk towards the car.  Silently, she shuffles into place behind him.
Lamb sneezes!! Lamb is in the backseat talking to Duffy about Lady Di and how she thinks she can get away with it.  Standish is in the front, we see her listening to Lamb’s version of how things will turn out, when Lamb sneezes again.  We see her make a face of concern, but she says nothing.
Is no one gonna say “Bless you”?... No?... bit rude – Lamb
Lamb goes on about how this is all a set up by Lady Di to Duffy.  Sneezes again!
Oh, Jesus! You keep a cat in here or what? – Lamb
Standish, you got a tissue in that bag? – Lamb
Standish unzips her purse, slips a hand in and recognizes that he’s left his gun in her purse…
I’ve only got one left – Standish
Give us it here then. – Lamb, said to Standish, as he looks at Duffy to see if he’s caught on
I have a question I want answered first. – Standish, face looks determined, she’s got him at a disadvantage and tries to take advantage of the situation
Oh for, - - what now? – Lamb sighs, nearly rolling his eyes, he’s looking at her in annoyance / disbelief maybe…  that she would discuss THAT topic at THIS particular moment.
The question pertains to something that was raised in a voice mail that I received tonight. – Standish looks and sounds quite insistent which earns direct eye contact from Lamb, before he casually lets out an amused sigh while looking out the window
Tumblr media
I’ll tell you later *wiggles his pinky at her* Pinkie promise. – Lamb to Standish.  Standish decides not to push it further.
Tissue – Lamb says again. Standish nods before we see her pull out a gun, cocks it and aims it at Webb.
Tumblr media
In the back seat Lamb is seen leaning forward a bit as if to discourage Duffy from trying to touch or interfere with Standish in any way.
Tumblr media
Now, we all know I’m not going to shoot you dead, Mr. Webb. But I’ll put a bullet through your foot if I have to… Pull over – Standish speaking to Webb while gesturing with the gun.
In the front seat, Webb looks scared.  In the back seat, Duffy looks at Jackson in disbelief.  Jackson looks first at Webb, then at Standish, where we see the corner of his mouth turn up as he smiles proudly, yet discreetly. (that’s HIS girl)♥
I said pull over. – Standish
Yea all right all right – Webb;  This is your stop boys – Lamb says while jumping from the back seat to the drivers seat.
You two can walk from here if that’s all right. – Lamb, drives off, tires squealing.
Once they’ve driven off, we see Lamb driving, glancing over at Standish, hand on his face.
You’re full of surprises Standish, you know that? – Jackson is speaking, but we don’t see him.  We see Standish hearing him say this and she says nothing but we see the same discreetly proud smile tugging at the corner of her mouth this time. ♥ (was that a genuine Jackson Lamb compliment!?)
How’d you know my Y-fronts are nylon? – Lamb again brings up underwear out of nowhere lol – but in reference to her mentioning wanting to catch him in his nylon y-fronts earlier in the episode.  We don’t see Lamb when he speaks, the camera is on Standish again. We get this range of micro-expressions going over Saskia Reeves’ face here.  She’s surprised at his compliment, she’s proud of herself, she’s listening attentively to his question, and then slightly annoyed that she knows about the nylon y-fronts because she’s the one who has to buy them for him!?
Tumblr media
Because I have to buy them for you – Standish, … here we see Lamb grinning, looking quite proud of himself. Standish looks out the window while sharing this fun fact with Lamb.
Drip-dry. Very efficient. – Lamb
We see both of them in the front seat.  Lamb looks a bit amused.  Standish purses her lips together as if willing to end that particular avenue of conversation.
Standish holds up the gun and releases the magazine efficiently and easily.
Lamb does a quick double take in her direction looking at her face, is he impressed again?
Standish looks cool and nonchalant.  She’s disabled the weapon. She’s quiet and focused on what’s next.
....... Thanks again for your thoughts and insight!! ♥ I'm so excited for S4!!

hi! i'm actually really interested in the "is cait sith reeve" debate and was fascinated by your post since you firmly believe cait sith is his own person.
i'm playing through dirge right now so i can't comment fully on what transpires there, but based on rebirth alone i'm having trouble believing cait sith isn't controlled by him. i know your post said rebirth excluded a scene that made it clear cait sith is his own person, but I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly. The only thing I can think of is the original game, where Cait Sith sacrifices himself and says not to forget him even if another Cait Sith comes along...which is a good point, though one could potentially argue that Reeve is just sentimental.
Anyway, what I want to know is: if Cait Sith has a personality separate from Reeve and can move independently while Reeve is busy, then why does Cait Sith repeatedly go offline in Rebirth while Reeve is busy? This is the main argument I see and one of my favorites, so I think answering that could help your own. The only arguments I can think up are either that the devs wanted to give players clear hints that Reeve controls Cait Sith, or that he wants to make sure he's monitoring Cait Sith when the cat interacts with the party. But besides that, Cait Sith really doesn't act like a different person. Sure, he has an accent and is silly, but he doesn't make any comment whatsoever (as far as I know) that indicates he isn't Reeve himself. In fact, the party treats Cait Sith and the Shinra employee controlling him as the same person, and Cait Sith doesn't attempt to rebuke it. (Outside of maybe lying that he's a mere amusement park attraction?)
i do admit, if dirge seriously contradicts this interpretation, it's weird for the devs to go against it...but as someone who once believed cait sith and reeve were separate and changed their mind after rebirth, I just don't think there's enough evidence based on rebirth alone to claim that cait sith is his own person.
on that note, you mentioned cait sith has his own likes and dislikes separate from reeve and i'm actually really curious about that! do you have an example of that? :D It sounds like fun trivia lol (i really like reeve and cait sith...)
anyway thank you for reading till the end! sorry if this is unwelcome
There's a scene in Dirge where Reeve and Cait walk out of the same room together, reacting to one another independently:
Tumblr media
Further, Cait Sith only goes into stasis twice in the entirety of Rebirth as far as I can recall? Once at the end of a board meeting that Reeve was active in, but seemingly not for the entirety of the board meeting, as Cait Sith appeared to be mid-conversation and trailed off when Reeve got bad news—this makes sense if he's connected to Cait Sith and has the capacity to control him directly as needed, but not if he had to do so actively 100% of the time. The other time is in Cosmo Canyon, because he's clearly not interested in their woo-woo metaphysical nonsense, and he cites it as taking time to recharge his batteries.
Reeve is still working as Director of Urban Planning during all of this, so I find it super hard to believe that he's spending 99.9999% his time at a computer or mentally controlling and speaking through a doll while also running the department that is trying to put Midgar back together after the plate drop—particularly not since we have official meta stating that he's an Inspire, which I cited in a reblog.
Beyond that, there's this bit in the OG, which Cait Sith says to himself, in an empty room:
Tumblr media
There is no explanation for this if Cait Sith is entirely remote controlled. There's no one else here to hear it, no reason for him to express these feelings—or even have feelings in the first place!
In Rebirth it's even more clear, because he expresses physical strain as he's literally holding the Temple up by keeping himself wedged under the platform. He's uncomfortable, he's physically taxed, he's in pain. Again, most of this occurs in an empty room, and would not happen if he was just a toy that Reeve had to control directly like a complex RC car or something.
The concept of likes and dislikes that are independent is less solidly shown in-canon, but they have distinctly different personalities, and Reeve is very clearly not interested in things like prophecies and the Promised Land and all that—he is a scientist at the end of the day, a civil and mechanical engineer—and yet Cait Sith's whole shtick is to tell fortunes! This is also something that he seems to enjoy doing quite a bit, even if he's not very good at it. (He gets better. Kinda.)
Cait Sith is obviously connected to Reeve, but it's equally obvious that he's not analogous. Presumably Cait Sith doesn't care when he's equated to Reeve because he is Reeve's eyes and ears in the field, even when he's not in direct control. The fact that he only really talks about himself as an individual when he's alone kind of implies that he'd rather the others not know, because he doesn't want them to be upset about what's going to happen to him; if he were nothing more than a glorified RC toy, this wouldn't be a concern, because he wouldn't have concerns at all.

Almost thirty years later and I'm still trying to figure out if Cait Sith is
a) a robot controlled by Reeve telepathically
b) a AI with it's on personality just lending eyes and ears to Reeve
c) a mix of both, meaning sometimes it's Cait and sometimes it's Reeve in control
Because all those times we see Cait coming to lovethe team, the times he feels bad for having to help Shinra, the times he sacrifices hkmself - who is in control, there? Cait, or Reeve?
I can't help but feel there is also a little bit of Cait that is a separate personality from Reeve, is all
