Today's Date is April 29th, 2024 and today's card is Ramos, Dragon Engine!
[ID The picture depicts a massive metal dragon walking across a grassy plains. It's silhouette is sort of reminiscent of a giraffe due to its long neck and four legs. It's head has a short snout and two horns curving inward. It has an incredibly long tail likely more than double its height, maybe triple. Keep in mind its like kaiju size. it also has very very big, thin, angular wings that are as long as double its height.
It's a Legendary Artifact Creature with the Dragon subtype. It's mana cost is 6 Colorless. It's power is 4 and its toughness is also 4. It's rarity is mythic rare.
The rules text reads "Flying
Whenever you cast a spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Ramos, Dragon Engine for each of that spell's colors.
Remove five +1/+1 counters from Ramos: Add 2 White 2 Blue 2 Black 2 Red 2 Green to your mana pool. Activate this ability only once each turn."
It's artist is Joseph Meehan and it's print year is 2017. It's from the set Commander 2017. End Id.]

Ramos, Dragon Engine from Magic: the Gathering. One of the biggest sculptures I've worked on! 🐉 Made of air-dry clay, painted with acrylic paints and coated with a protective matte varnish. The sculpture was made to order. Dimensions: 31 x 55 x 23 cm = 12.2 x 21.7 x 9.1 inches (length x wingspan x height).
Tumblr media
Just want to show you the size of Ramos in comparison to the standard-sized Funko Pop Simba ^^ And here's a video review of the sculpture:

what is a mtg color combination(or single color if you prefer) that you generally find unfun to play against in commander, and 3 or so commanders/general deck themes in that color/colors that you've nevertheless rather enjoyed playing against?
hmm i dont tend to find paritcular color combinations inherently anoyinfg to play against. the closest is simic+ valuesalop commanders who i find boring to play against because theyu offer absolutely no texture to the game in the way that almost any other commander would. but yknow those are bad because theyre draw card put land placeholder simic face commandre text rather than just because of their colours. honeslty if theres any color id i think makes for worse decks its 5c because it opens the gates to sooo many generic value pieces. but i still like playing against 5c decks that are fun and textured and not just like kenrith goodstuff. one of my friends has a really funny ramos dragon engine deck that runs every single three-color charm which leads to some really fun gameplay

Sorry to bother you yet agian mr Rosewarter, but i seek answers. Cards(more so artifacts) that have abilities that make colored mana (specifically "Ramos, Dragon Engine") but are not colored, dose this mean for commander that their color identity is WUBRG, and if so, what is the reason?
Is the inherent difficulty of aquiring mana outside your commander's identity not a challenge enough that if you manage to get it, should it not be okay to use it?(of course, referring to activated abilities)
If a colored mana exists in rules text (but not only in reminder text) it counts towards the card's color identity. Note that the Commander Rules Committee is in charge of defining color identity, not Wizards.

“Captain, what’s that it’s sitting on?”
“Well, Arvad, it kinda looks like…Ramos?”
The human and vampire snuck closer to the dragon and its treasure, but were spotted almost immediately. The creature roared at the approaching pair, leaning forward to better cover its hoard. Even so, the treasure was several times larger than its protector, serving more as a platform than a thing to cover up.
“Ramos?” Jhoira muttered, to the metallic body under the dragon. “Ramos!”
The dragon engine tilted its head up at the sound of its name, startling its much smaller counterpart sitting atop it. But after only a few seconds of holding its head upright, Ramos collapsed once more under the extra weight, emitting sparks and steam as it fell.
“Ramos, Captain?” Arvad murmured.
“Yes. Dragon engine…original Weatherlight crew…long story. Before your time.”
“I could’ve figured that,” Arvad chuckled. “What shall we do?”
“We need to get that dragon off of its head. So, we either lure it off, or knock it off.”
Jhoira and Arvad looked to the dragon, then to each other, taking note of their size difference, about as significant as the one between Ramos and the dragon.
“Lure it off,” the two adventurers droned in unison.
As it turned out, it was fairly easy to part the dragon from its hoard. Jhoira and Arvad sprinted forward, shouting and waving their hands. Sensing an easy meal, the dragon leapt from its perch, but its claws only found the ground, as the pair dove in opposite directions around it. The frustrated dragon growled, only to hear the sound of grinding gears from behind it.
“Get it, Ramos!”
A single metallic foot completely eclipsed the lesser dragon, before it could even turn around. Upright once more, Ramos bowed its head to Jhoira and Arvad - an awkward gesture, considering its size.
“Happy to help!” Jhoira shouted upward. “Just, try not to become part of another dragon’s hoard from here on out!”
Ramos let out a blast of steam from its snout, making what sounded like an annoyed hiss.

Ramos, Dragão Mecânico/ Ramos, Dragon Engine
Tumblr media

I'll usually bounce between a bunch if deck styles and colour groupings, but I think one of the ones I have the most fun with is probably Ramos, Dragon Engine for my transformers tribal deck. It's full of a bunch of nonsense but I have a lot of fun with it and it can pull out some crazy wins.
So there are more tumblr mtg players than I anticipated, it turns out. What's everyone's favourite commander?
I'll go first, Juri of the Revue.
(Honourable mention to my meme deck where you have to get a date for Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile by swiping left or right with his scry ability.)

Krenko’s Guide to Creature Types: Construct
Tumblr media
Art by  Lius Lasahido
What is a Construct (flavorfully)?
A Construct is any artificial creature, such as a catapult, a robot, a doll, a blimp, or a dragon,  but not all artificial creatures, because sometimes they count as actual dragons or birds or dogs even though they’re entirely artificial.
What is a Construct (mechanically)?
In the old days of Magic: the Gathering, Artifact Creatures didn’t need creature types. Then, the Grand Creature Type Update came to fix this by giving a creature type to each and every Artifact creature. The type ‘construct’ was given to any without an obvious better option.
Constructs vary wildly in size and ability with no rhyme or reason, save that all but Slag Fiend are artifact creatures. How is Slag Fiend a construct but not an Artifact? I don’t know. I honestly don’t know.
Tumblr media
Can I make a Construct deck?
There’s enough decent constructs that it should be entirely reasonable to make a construct deck for casual purposes, but there’s no real reward for doing so. Artifact creatures tend to be weaker than non-artifact creatures at the same mana costs, and while there are multiple constructs that can act as construct lords, Adaptive Automaton, Chief of the Foundry, and Steel Overseer are all completely apathetic to your creature type of choice, though you could use them together along with Metallic Mimic to make a Lord-Heavy artifact deck.
It’s certainly possible to make a deck that wins using Constructs. In standard alone, Electrostatic Pummeler, Metallurgic Summonings, and Karn, Scion of Urza are solid game-ending threats, but constructs are a subtheme of artifact creatures, and you’re going to do a lot better in any format making an artifact creatures matter deck than making a constructs matter deck.
In Commander, the only legendary construct is Traxos, who’s probably fine, but does nothing to support the rest of the type and is probably a lot better just loading up on Equipment. Daretti, Scrap Savant or Feldon work great with a lot of constructs, but once again, at this point you’re making an Artifact deck, not a Construct deck, and you have no rewards for creature type that matter. Any Construct deck is relying entirely on “choose a type” cards, or “Artifact matters” cards in its entirety.
Tumblr media
Is Construct a good creature type?
Construct, like Beast, is an awful creature type that means nothing. Just as “Beast” means “Creature,” “Construct” means “Artifact.”  And like with Beast, while I truly accept that some things, like Grapeshot Catapult, don’t have anything else they could be but a Construct, you can’t tell me that Dragon Engine and Ugin’s Construct are Constructs but then Ramos, Dragon Engine and Lotus Guardian are real dragons.
Unfortunately, unlike with Beasts, it’s a lot harder to fix construct taxonomy by trying to use actual taxonomy. There’s certainly some things I would change. I’d lean more toward living creature types over “Construct” for things like Dragon Engine and Traxos, which are designed to look like living creatures. I’d push a lot more of the humanoid constructs into Golem. I’d turn a lot of Phyrexian constructs into “Horror,” which seems to be a good go-to creature type for Phyrexians that isn’t too limiting.  I’d definitely expand Assembly-Worker (possibly renaming it to Assembler or Worker) to absorb things like Hangarback Walker and Accomplished Automaton that make more artifact creatures. I might even give some the Artificer creature type.
A lot of things, though, can’t be reclassified without making a new creature type, and I’m trying to cut down on the number of those. Ultimately, Construct is boring and redundant, but has to exist because… Actually I’m not so sure why we can’t just have a bunch of artifact creatures without creature types. A Battering Ram doesn’t need a creature type. A Catapult doesn’t need a creature type. What sort of magical effect are you doing to give your Catapults +1/+1 for each Battering Ram you control?
So maybe I’d endorse going back to “artifact creatures don’t need a creature type, but should get one when relevant.” The idea that a truly mindless creature can’t benefit from any actual creature type buffs is starting to resonate with me. After all, Vehicles currently don’t have creature types and they’re doing fine.

Hey Jay Traxos was a dragon engine, and was Ramos, why is the typing so different from the brothers war dragon engine?
I actually talked about this on Twitter in this thread!
Short answer: original Phyrexian dragon engines are 'dragons', Mishra's copies are 'constructs'. I don't recall if this will carry through to the BRO set.

Making a 5c commander deck with Ramos, Dragon Engine. The theme is Double/Additional (Draw additional card during draw step, Comes into play with twice that many counters, etc). Need suggestions.

I think maybe i’ll start building my Ramos deck preemptively...
I know he’s designed for like a “cast lots of 3+ coloured spells” build, but i’m going to build an artifact deck around him. It should be easy enough to take advantage of his awesome mana ability even if not all my spells are colour heavy.
