"So, not COVID related, however, this is REALLY exciting news. For the FIRST time ever, we have evidence that it IS possible to develop a functional immune response that can treat patients’ cancer based on Phase 2b trial results of an investigational personalized cancer vaccine!

Phase 2b KEYNOTE-942/mRNA-4157-P201 trial of mRNA-4157/V940, in combination with KEYTRUDA®, Merck's anti-PD-1 therapy, demonstrated a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in the primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival (RFS) versus KEYTRUDA alone for the adjuvant treatment of patients with stage III/IV melanoma following complete resection. Adjuvant treatment with mRNA-4157/V940 in combination with KEYTRUDA reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 44% compared with KEYTRUDA alone. These results are the first demonstration of efficacy for an investigational mRNA cancer treatment in a randomized clinical trial. Needless to say, that is ASTOUNDING. In the study, patients were randomly assigned to receive one of two treatments. One group was treated with the drug pembrolizumab, or Keytruda, an existing medication that releases the brake that the immune system normally has on attacking cancer cells, since cancer cells grow from the body’s own cells. The other group received Keytruda and a personalized cancer vaccine using mRNA technology. All of the patients had surgery to remove their melanoma, and for the vaccine group, scientists biopsied and genetically sequenced those tumors, then identified nearly three dozen genetic, personalized tumor flags, in the form of mRNA, for each patient’s immune system to recognize. These were then combined and injected in patients’ arms-in the same way that the COVID-19 vaccine delivered instructions to target the virus’ spike protein genes. Except in this case, the immune system was trained to target and destroy melanoma cells rather than a virus. So, how exactly does this work? Personalized cancer vaccines are designed to prime the immune system so that a patient can generate a tailored antitumor response specific to their tumor mutation signature. mRNA-4157/V940 is designed to stimulate an immune response by generating specific T-cell responses based on the unique mutational signature of a patient's tumor. mRNA-4157/V940 essentially consists of a single synthetic mRNA coding for up to 34 neoantigens that is designed and produced based on the unique mutational signature of the DNA sequence of the patient's tumor. Upon administration into the body, the algorithmically derived and RNA-encoded neoantigen sequences are endogenously translated and undergo natural cellular antigen processing and presentation, which is a key step in adaptive immunity.

ID: The key to the vaccine's success seems to be that it is tailored to each patient's tumor, allowing each patient to mount a precise and targeted response to their cancer. The flexibility of the mRNA technology makes that possible, as COVID-19 vaccine development demonstrated. It took about six weeks for scientists to generate each personalized mRNA cancer vaccine. Patients will be followed for at least one more year, and possibly more after completing the treatment. Scientists will monitor how long- lasting the immune response is, and how well it holds up to future recurrences or metastases. If the results are confirmed, it may also be possible to use the vaccine in people at earlier stages of the disease, or even in people without melanoma who are at higher risk for it to prevent them from developing tumors in the first place.

KEYNOTE-942 is an ongoing randomized, open-label Phase 2b trial that enrolled 157 patients with stage III/IV melanoma. Following complete surgical resection, patients were randomized to receive mRNA-4157/V940 (nine total doses of mRNA-4157) and KEYTRUDA (200 mg every three weeks up to 18 cycles [for approximately one year]) versus KEYTRUDA alone for approximately one year until disease recurrence or unacceptable toxicity. The primary endpoint is recurrence-free survival, and secondary endpoints include distant metastasis-free survival and safety. Key eligibility criteria for the trial included: patients with resectable cutaneous melanoma metastatic to a lymph node and at high risk of recurrence, patients with complete resection within 13 weeks prior to the first dose of KEYTRUDA, patients were disease free at study entry (after surgery) with no loco-regional relapse or distant metastasis and no clinical evidence of brain metastases, patients had a formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tumor sample available suitable for sequencing, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) Performance Status 0 or 1 and patients with normal organ and marrow function reported at screening. Companies plan to discuss results with regulatory authorities and initiate a Phase 3 study in melanoma in 2023 and rapidly expand to additional tumor types."

"KEYTRUDA is an immunotherapy that works by increasing the ability of the body's immune system to help detect and fight tumor cells. As I’ve said in a few other posts, I intentionally did not post tons and tons of studies because I knew no one would have time to click through them all and I wanted to keep it short and sweet. However, I do want to provide more resources for people who are inclined to keep reading about this, so here are a few more studies. I may just start doing this every so often, where I post links/results from whatever I’ve been reading. A link to full article is included in the title of each. I don’t really intend to add much of my own commentary here. Just providing things for your own reading and criticism.

A few additional studies and data sets, including the early randomized controlled trials for the mRNA vaccines, are discussed in the original post, and further discussion of mortality associated with vaccination is discussed in this follow up. 

1. Effectiveness of Covid-19 Vaccines against the B.1.617.2 (Delta) Variant

Study defined COVID-19 as a positive PCR test with symptoms. Children under age 16 were excluded, as were people with previous positive testing. A weakness of the study is that it is observational, and you can read about what the authors say regarding this toward the end of the article.

Results: “Effectiveness after one dose of vaccine (BNT162b2 or ChAdOx1 nCoV-19) was notably lower among persons with the delta variant (30.7%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 25.2 to 35.7) than among those with the alpha variant (48.7%; 95% CI, 45.5 to 51.7); the results were similar for both vaccines. With the BNT162b2 vaccine, the effectiveness of two doses was 93.7% (95% CI, 91.6 to 95.3) among persons with the alpha variant and 88.0% (95% CI, 85.3 to 90.1) among those with the delta variant. With the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine, the effectiveness of two doses was 74.5% (95% CI, 68.4 to 79.4) among persons with the alpha variant and 67.0% (95% CI, 61.3 to 71.8) among those with the delta variant.”

Authors’ conclusions: “Only modest differences in vaccine effectiveness were noted with the delta variant as compared with the alpha variant after the receipt of two vaccine doses. Absolute differences in vaccine effectiveness were more marked after the receipt of the first dose. This finding would support efforts to maximize vaccine uptake with two doses among vulnerable populations.”

2.  BNT162b2 mRNA Covid-19 Vaccine in a Nationwide Mass Vaccination Setting

This study out of Israel looked at vaccine effectiveness against a variety of outcomes including infection, symptomatic infection, severe disease, and death using a pretty impressive sample size.

Results: “Each study group included 596,618 persons. Estimated vaccine effectiveness for the study outcomes at days 14 through 20 after the first dose and at 7 or more days after the second dose was as follows: for documented infection, 46% (95% confidence interval [CI], 40 to 51) and 92% (95% CI, 88 to 95); for symptomatic Covid-19, 57% (95% CI, 50 to 63) and 94% (95% CI, 87 to 98); for hospitalization, 74% (95% CI, 56 to 86) and 87% (95% CI, 55 to 100); and for severe disease, 62% (95% CI, 39 to 80) and 92% (95% CI, 75 to 100), respectively. Estimated effectiveness in preventing death from Covid-19 was 72% (95% CI, 19 to 100) for days 14 through 20 after the first dose. Estimated effectiveness in specific subpopulations assessed for documented infection and symptomatic Covid-19 was consistent across age groups, with potentially slightly lower effectiveness in persons with multiple coexisting conditions.”

Authors’ conclusions: “This study in a nationwide mass vaccination setting suggests that the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine is effective for a wide range of Covid-19-related outcomes, a finding consistent with that of the randomized trial.”

3. Safety and efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (AZD1222) against SARS-CoV-2: an interim analysis of four randomised controlled trials in Brazil, South Africa, and the UK

This study involved an RCT looking at a viral vector vaccine rather than mRNA vaccine. Overall efficacy appears to be high, but slightly lower than what we are seeing with some other mRNA ones. This study also followed outcomes for those who got COVID-19, and only people in the control arm (i.e., the ones who got a placebo) got seriously ill or died from COVID. 

Results: “Between April 23 and Nov 4, 2020, 23 848 participants were enrolled and 11 636 participants (7548 in the UK, 4088 in Brazil) were included in the interim primary efficacy analysis. In participants who received two standard doses, vaccine efficacy was 62·1% (95% CI 41·0–75·7; 27 [0·6%] of 4440 in the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group vs71 [1·6%] of 4455 in the control group) and in participants who received a low dose followed by a standard dose, efficacy was 90·0% (67·4–97·0; three [0·2%] of 1367 vs 30 [2·2%] of 1374; pinteraction=0·010). Overall vaccine efficacy across both groups was 70·4% (95·8% CI 54·8–80·6; 30 [0·5%] of 5807 vs 101 [1·7%] of 5829). From 21 days after the first dose, there were ten cases hospitalised for COVID-19, all in the control arm; two were classified as severe COVID-19, including one death. There were 74 341 person-months of safety follow-up (median 3·4 months, IQR 1·3–4·8): 175 severe adverse events occurred in 168 participants, 84 events in the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group and 91 in the control group. Three events were classified as possibly related to a vaccine: one in the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group, one in the control group, and one in a participant who remains masked to group allocation.“

Authors’ conclusion:  “ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 has an acceptable safety profile and has been found to be efficacious against symptomatic COVID-19 in this interim analysis of ongoing clinical trials.”

4.  Effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines on covid-19 related symptoms, hospital admissions, and mortality in older adults in England: test negative case-control study

This one is a case control study looking at effectivnes of two different vaccines against a variety of outcomes.

Results Participants aged 80 years and older vaccinated with BNT162b2 before 4 January 2021 had a higher odds of testing positive for covid-19 in the first nine days after vaccination (odds ratio up to 1.48, 95% confidence interval 1.23 to 1.77), indicating that those initially targeted had a higher underlying risk of infection. Vaccine effectiveness was therefore compared with the baseline post-vaccination period. Vaccine effects were noted 10 to 13 days after vaccination, reaching a vaccine effectiveness of 70% (95% confidence interval 59% to 78%), then plateauing. From 14 days after the second dose a vaccination effectiveness of 89% (85% to 93%) was found compared with the increased baseline risk. Participants aged 70 years and older vaccinated from 4 January (when ChAdOx1-S delivery commenced) had a similar underlying risk of covid-19 to unvaccinated individuals. With BNT162b2, vaccine effectiveness reached 61% (51% to 69%) from 28 to 34 days after vaccination, then plateaued. With ChAdOx1-S, effects were seen from 14 to 20 days after vaccination, reaching an effectiveness of 60% (41% to 73%) from 28 to 34 days, increasing to 73% (27% to 90%) from day 35 onwards. On top of the protection against symptomatic disease, a further 43% (33% to 52%) reduced risk of emergency hospital admission and 51% (37% to 62%) reduced risk of death was observed in those who had received one dose of BNT162b2. Participants who had received one dose of ChAdOx1-S had a further 37% (3% to 59%) reduced risk of emergency hospital admission. Follow-up was insufficient to assess the effect of ChAdOx1-S on mortality. Combined with the effect against symptomatic disease, a single dose of either vaccine was about 80% effective at preventing admission to hospital with covid-19 and a single dose of BNT162b2 was 85% effective at preventing death with covid-19.

Authors’ conclusion: Vaccination with either one dose of BNT162b2 or ChAdOx1-S was associated with a significant reduction in symptomatic covid-19 in older adults, and with further protection against severe disease. Both vaccines showed similar effects. Protection was maintained for the duration of follow-up (>6 weeks). A second dose of BNT162b2 was associated with further protection against symptomatic disease. A clear effect of the vaccines against the B.1.1.7 variant was found.

Should the Covid vaccine be mandated for all?

Yes Covid vaccines should be mandated for all UNLESS you have a real medical condition that really prevents you from getting it OR you physically cannot go ie; parents say no. Some people want to fight against the covid vaccine mandate because of religious reasons, or 'my body my choice', or how it's untrustworthy because of how fast it was made, or how it's not 100%, and many more which all can be countered. 

People like to counter this by using religious reasons but shouldn't religion push you to have morals to protect yourself and others? SO getting the vaccine wouldn't be morally wrong or go against your religion. Some religions are homophobic so what would you have to say to that? Religion shouldn't be something you base yours and others health on either

Some say it shouldn't be trusted because of how fast it was made, how it's not 100% effective, and they don't know what's in it. Lets not pretend, you eat food made in 1 minute and probably haven't touched a vegetable in at least a week plus schools require you to get vaccines that aren't 100% effective either. In 2022 we should expect things to be made faster because of how advanced our technology is. From organ transplants to two headed dogs (1954) our technology is amazing. Not only that but the reason the vaccine was made in a hurry was BECAUSE people that refused to take the vaccine became inhumane and out of control therefore spreading the virus leading to authorities rushing the vaccine out of public desperation. Do you know EVERY single product that went into making your food? I know damn well you get the flu shots which aren't 100% effective plus there are tons of side effects to it too and a very VERY small percentage of people have died from it. All vaccines are made to help your body fight it off in the case that you DO get it. wow would you look at that, just like the covid vaccine! You get more riskier shots when you're a baby than the covid shot. if you eat public school lunch, don't worry about what's in the vaccine babe

Some people like to mock the abortion movement and use it for this. The 'My body' movement is used for abortion because of the fact that them aborting their kid affects no one but themselves. They're the ones going through 9 months of hell and have to deal with the kid in the end. This is not "my body my choice” as your actions affect people in need or sick and you only look at them when you need a scapegoat for your trash excuses. Some people say the government is tracking us or that they are planning to kill us all. Let's be honest here, the government is not going to test all 7 billion of us at once and if you're afraid of them tracking you then you might as well get rid of every single piece of technology you've ever touched. Plus you're literally a highschool student. Why do you think you are special enough that the government wants to track you down? The government wouldn’t cause mass genocide by giving us defected vaccines that could kill us all. There are 7+ billion people against tens of governments, it's like there's no such thing as a right to revolution. The reason some have offered money for you to get it is because during the pandemic the economy suffered a blow. They want you to get better so you can get back to work and make money. They don't give two rats ass about how you feel. As long as you're good enough to go to work is all that matters and I think over the past few weeks that has shown. 

Despite all this AND MORE people will still refuse the vaccine but I won't fight you anymore. Over the past 2 and a half years, so much misinformation has been spread because of politically biased people/ news articles and I guess people would rather listen to that than actual DOCTORS. Plus a lot of people have a wack sense of mortality these days so.. If you don't want to get the vaccine then cope I guess

The Guardian has, once again, disseminated the erroneous claim that Israel has “50 racist laws,” in an op-ed by Sami Abu Shehadeh, an Arab MK who was recently revealed to have attended an event marking the release of a terrorist convicted of conspiring to murder Israelis.

The op-ed (“Israel’s pact with the UAE is not about peace. It’s a business deal”, Oct. 14), included the following:

Discrimination and racism against Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, an indigenous population that makes up over 20% of the country’s population, is present in every aspect of life. More than 50 laws discriminate against non-Jewish citizens. Israel’s trains do not stop in a single Arab city. [emphasis added]

There are actually two problems with that last sentence.

Turning to the second sentence we highlighted, that Israeli trains “don’t stop in Arab cities”: This is extremely misleading. There’s an Israel Railways station called Lehavim/Rahat, serving Rahat, the largest Arab Bedouin city in Israel. (The train station is a mere 18-minute drive from the town.)

Now, regarding 50 laws that allegedly discriminate against non-Jewish citizens, which, though unsourced, is almost certainly based on a report by the radical anti-Israel NGO Adalah.

However, CAMERA and other watchdog groups have refuted Adalah’s claims of racist laws — a term they use so unseriously that even an Israeli public health law requiring parents to vaccinate their children is included as an example of “racist” legislation.

A comprehensive analysis of the “50 racist laws” claim was conducted by the Institute for Zionist Strategies (IZS), and included the following highlights:

The overwhelming majority of the laws featured in the list (53 out of 57) do not even relate to the citizens’ ethnic origins, and those that do are designed to prevent and avoid discrimination. For example, the Law and Administration Ordinance (1948) that defines the country’s official rest days, and the Law for Using the Hebrew Date, both explicitly exclude institutions and authorities that serve non-Jewish populations for whom the law provides for definitions and procedures appropriate for their specific needs.

In 21 cases, Adalah’s claims of discrimination stem from the organization’s extremist stance that rejects the nature of Israel as a nation-state in general and as the nation-state of of the Jewish people in particular. For example, the Yad BenZvi Law is defined as a discriminatory law because of the institution’s objective of promoting Zionist ideals.

Eighteen of the laws reflect customs in other Western democracies, whose democratic character no one would disparage. For example, according to Adalah, the flag constitutes a discriminatory law. Needless to say, this unfounded reasoning would mean that any country, the flag of which bears a cross or crescent, discriminates against its non-Christian or non-Muslim minorities. A more in-depth comparison between laws frequently found that Israeli legislation is actually characterized by a higher degree of tolerance for its national minorities.

In at least 13 cases, a large disparity exists between the explicit content of the laws and the biased (and sometimes warped) interpretation accorded to them by Adalah. In some instances the claimed discrimination is difficult to identify. For example, the Golan Heights Law is considered discriminatory due to its objective of “according a legal basis for the implementation of Israeli law on the territory of the Golan Heights conquered by Israel.” It would seem that only Adalah is capable of explaining a law intended to grant equal rights to all residents of the Golan Heights as being discriminatory.

Eight laws are intended to protect the security of all Israeli citizens regardless of religion, race, or gender. Included in these laws are a number of legislative amendments to the Criminal Procedure Law and the Prisons Ordinance aimed at assisting the security forces in preventing terror attacks. These laws adversely affect only those clearly suspected of engaging in terror activity without distinguishing between Jews and Arabs. In effect, this very claim is woefully discriminatory because it presumes that Arab citizens of Israel are generally hostile and prone to terror activities.

Seven of the laws do not even relate to Israel’s Arab citizens but rather to those non-citizen individuals towards whom the State is not obligated to act with equality. The absurdity in Adalah’s approach can be demonstrated by the example of the Trading with the Enemy Act (a law evolving from British Mandatory law) being included in the list of discriminatory laws because “the countries declared as such (Iran, Syria and Lebanon) are Arab and/or Muslim states.” Presumably the law could be remedied by adding other, non-Muslim and non-Arab enemy states.

In the case of some of the laws mentioned in the list, the supposed discrimination in question actually affected the Jewish majority and not the Arab minority. For example, Clause 7a of the Basic Law: the Knesset, the objective of which is to prevent the candidacy of political parties acting against the existence of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, has been implemented only against Jewish parties on grounds of anti-democratic objectives. Similarly, amendments to the Absorption of Discharged Soldiers Law are indicted by Adalah for discriminating in favor of Jewish citizens, but these citizens are the ones specifically obligated to serve three years of military service for sub-minimum compensation and living conditions, thus postponing their university education and professional advancement. It is the Arab citizen who enjoys the option of exemption from military service altogether or alternatively, of volunteering for national civil service which does not place them in harms way but which nevertheless affords them the same benefits awarded to discharged soldiers.

In a number of cases, Adalah misuses objective crime statistics to claim discrimination. According to this logic, if members of the Arab sector of the population are the main criminal violators of a certain law, then that particular law perforce is deemed racist. This could apply to laws against theft of property, against sex crimes, or against driving through red lights. The constructive and proper solution to disproportionate violations is not annulment of necessary laws, of course, but rather, educating and encouraging observance of the law among all sectors of the population — without distinction or favoritism.

A large portion of Adalah’s racism claims, they add, stem from their belief that Zionism is intrinsically racist, and that the Jewish state, within any borders, has no right to exist — a view considered antisemitic by the IHRA Working Definition.

The fact that such a patently false, unsourced claim smearing Israel got past Guardian editors is just another example of the media group’s institutional anti-Israel bigotry that we’ve been documenting on these pages over the last 11 years.

The CoViD Vaccine

I first posted this to facebook because of the high number of anti-vaxxers on the media. But I figured I’d post it here, too. This is a quick study of why the CoViD-19 vaccine was developed so quickly and why it’s likely safe. Sources at the bottom of the post.

Part 1: Why was the CoViD vaccine developed so quickly while other vaccines take years?

Some people cite the inability to produce an HIV/AIDS vaccine after so long as a justification for stating that the CoViD vaccine could not possibly be developed in such a short time. However, there's a very good reason with the HIV/AIDS vaccine is taking so long, and it's found in the genetic makeup of the virus.

HIV is a strange virus, in that it completes its cycle insanely fast (within 24 hours in some cases) and because of this, it's prone to mutations. Because little to nothing was done about the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, the virus was allowed to spread, unchecked, rapidly mutating and developing into HUNDREDS of strains.

You know how we have to get a new flu shot every year because the virus has mutated into something new? That's HIV, but instead of a new strain appearing once a year, a new strain can appear in the course of one single viral generation. When HIV is transmitted to someone else, it may already be a slightly different virus than it was in the transmitter. This means that a vaccine developed to work in the person who transmitted the virus would not work for the newly-infected person.

That's why, at this point in time, antiretrovirals (drugs that disrupt the replication of the virus by preventing it from attaching to RNA) actually work better than a vaccine.

As well, HIV/AIDS specifically attacks the immune system, hampering any efforts at strong immune response. That is, by the time a vaccinated immune system recognizes the virus as a threat, it has already destroyed part of the immune system AND mutated itself, meaning the even a vaccine that would otherwise work can no longer be effective. This is a known phenomenon called "immune exhaustion."

Lastly, HIV is really good at hiding from detection as a dormant phase of the viral particles (called provirus) can remain within cells for years before lysing from/destroying the cells they're inside. And HIV creates these provirus particles every single cycle, which means even if a vaccine is developed and destroys all free-floating viral particles, the dormant particles will always be around to start a new phase of infection, once again leading to immune exhaustion.

In the case of HIV, the hope of a vaccination lay within the blood of people with a natural immunity to HIV, which is a brand new frontier of vaccine development that is poorly understood.

Conversely, CoViD-19 does have a semi-quick mutation rate, but not as fast as HIV. It was also immediately taken seriously by medical professionals, and the development of the vaccine started soon after the virus's discovery. Unlike HIV, CoViD does NOT attack the immune system (instead, it triggers a massive immune response called a cytokine storm) and it also does not hide undetected within cells. (...Probably. We are still learning about the virus.)

 Part 2: Genome Mapping

First, it's important to note that data sharing and sequencing equipment is much more sophisticated than it used to be. This means that several labs can work on the genetic mapping of CoViD at the same time, and share that data in real time. Powerful software allowed the geneticists to connect the various strands of viral RNA gathered from patients presenting with the virus, and it was quickly determined that CoViD-19 (AKA SARS-CoV-2) was remarkably similar to SARS-CoV years before. The viruses share between 88%-90% of the same genetic code; some scholars refer to both viruses as the same "species."

During the sequencing, it was also determined that while CoViD-19 showed mutations between each case, the faithfulness of the virus to the control was about 99%--suggesting that it was mutating slower than expected. This meant that a quick response could prevent the evolution of the virus to a point where vaccines would be ineffective. While there are multiple strains of CoViD-19, it's likely that they are all currently very similar.

The genome also showed that, like SARS from years past, the CoVid-19 virus contained the same protein receptor--known as ACE2--which had already been studied. The receptor (or spike, as it's called) is what allows the virus to bind to a host cell and release its RNA.

Other factors to consider that are related to the genome mapping itself is that the COST of mapping is far less than it has been in the past, and it also faster and more accurate. Development of vaccines for other diseases (such as chicken pox and HPV) were often hampered by cost, time, and inaccuracy. Conversely, every time the CoViD-19 virus was mapped, the resulting data was nearly the same.

In short, one of the hindrances to vaccine production is often the genome mapping. It's impossible to create a vaccine without knowing the full details of the virus, as a vaccine's purpose is to produce an immune response. That's essentially tricking the immune system into believing it's fighting a virus. The hardest part of vaccine development for CoViD-19 is already done, and it was done in record time.

Part 3: Messenger RNA and synthetic RNA

Before discussing the vaccine, I need to talk about what messenger ribonucleic acid (AKA mRNA) is.

When a cell splits, it needs to make an EXACT copy of its DNA for both cells. Because DNA is fairly complicated, it can't just split in half like the rest of the cell. It needs a set of instructions, which is where transcription comes in.

An enzyme called RNA polymerase makes a near-exact copy of the DNA strand, except for the nucleotide thymine, which is found in DNA, is transcribed as Uracil on the mRNA strand. A lot of stuff happens after that, but the important part is that this mRNA strand is read by ribosomes and TRANSLATED into proteins.

There's... a lot more to it than that, but that's the basic gist.

Which takes us to the question: What is an mRNA vaccine?

It's taken a long time to develop synthetic mRNA. Katalin Karikó, a Hungarian scientist, believed messenger RNA could be harnessed to create all sorts of disease resistances, but the synthetic material was quickly identified and destroyed by the body's immune system.

Because Karikó was experimenting with an idea that other scientists had dismissed as impossible, it took her FIFTEEN YEARS to create something with such promise that she finally received grants to further her work. It wasn't until 2005 that Karikó discovered a way to trick the immune system into NOT immediately attacking the synthetic RNA.

Only 15 years ago. And even then, because many of Karikó's peers had already dismissed messenger RNA as a valid medical tool, it took them a long time to get them on board, and research crawled forward and a snail's pace.

Her accomplishments DID interest a post-doc named Derrick Rossi, who successfully used the synthetic RNA to create proteins in a petri dish out of various polypeptides. Most interestingly, an introduced immune contingent would ignore the mRNA, as if it was supposed to be there.

It was this work, in 2010, that made Rossi realize that mRNA could be used to create vaccines.

This inkling of an idea required "proof of concept" in order to receive funding for further research--which was slow in coming. Any new technology, even discoveries that are microscopic, carries risks, and it turned out that repeated doses of mRNA could produce unwanted side-effects. It wasn't until 2018 that Moderna (which should be a familiar name to everyone by now!) Developed a two-dose therapy that would not produce significant negative effects in humans.

Just in time, too. CoViD-19 appeared in 2019. And while Moderna, Pfizer, and several other companies had been experimenting with mRNA as a vessel for vaccines, nothing had yet been approved for use.

Remember when I talked about the genetic map of CoViD-19 in my last post? With that, scientists creating an mRNA vaccine did not actually need the virus in order to work on the vaccine. All they needed was the genome--and they could then synthesize RNA, which could then be used to build the protein shell of the virus, producing an immune response.

Unfortunately, companies developing the vaccines came under fire for essentially using the promise of a save, synthetic material to fill their coffers. But of course, that's capitalism, and that's a different story.

But essentially, rather than a traditionally-created vaccine which uses dead or modified live viruses, an mRNA vaccine has never touched a virus, has never been injected into an animal in order to synthesize more vaccine, and is able to be ready-made in a lab using messenger RNA.

Of course there is concern about possible long-term effects of this new type of vaccine. The cool thing about mRNA, though, is built into its very code. After it does what it's supposed to do (in the case of the CoViD vaccine, that job is "building a viral envelope that contains no actual viral RNA," it self-destructs. That's why it has to be stored at such low temperatures. anything higher than that and you'd have what's essentially a slurry of random synthesized polypeptides that wouldn't do a damn thing.

So the worry isn't really whether there will be long-term effects from this vaccine, but whether the synthetic mRNA will be able to survive long enough to produce enough fake virus shells to create an immune response. So far, trials have proved successful.

Part 4: Polio, and Why Most Vaccines Are So Extensively Tested

There's a good reason that the FDA requires such extensive, lengthy testing on vaccines, and it has to do with the polio vaccine.

I'm sure most opponents of vaccination cite the early polio vaccine as a reason not to vaccinate--that vaccines are inherently dangerous and should be approached with caution.

Trials of the polio vaccine went well, and were well-tolerated, which meant scientists were initially baffled when a vaccine caused 40,000 cases of polio in children, 200 of which were left paralyzed, and 10 of which died.

At first, people were convinced that this meant vaccines were dangerous--many blamed Jonas Salk for pushing the vaccine through R&D and dooming everyone who'd gotten the vaccine to polio.

So what happened? Did dangerous chemicals in the vaccine cause a weak immune system leading to polio? Was the process itself flawed? Was it time to give up on vaccines as a valid form of disease protection???

Fortunately, no.

Just like today, there were many nay-sayers about vaccines, and those who were against putting them into their body. See, Salk used formaldehyde to de-activate the virus, which people recognized as being very poisonous. despite the fact that the vaccine itself contained none of the chemical, the public demanded an alternative if they were to take it.

So a company called Cutter Labs decided not to use formaldehyde to deactivate the vaccine. In fact, they didn't de-activate the vaccine at all. Because of a lack of rigorous safety protocol at the time, the error was then missed by health inspectors, who ok'd giving a completely live virus to 40,000 children.

This incident, called the Cutter Incident, led to more rigorous oversight and testing when it came to vaccination. It also let to what's called "attunated" viruses, which are weakened, but still living viruses. These attunated viruses have been responsible for outbreaks of poliomyelitis around the world, all because people feared the process used to kill the virus.

The point is, the reason it takes so long to approve vaccines under normal circumstances is that you are dealing with a medication that contains actual viruses (albeit usually dead viruses) plus agents designed to provoke an immune response, such as aluminum. Deactivated vaccines also used to contain thimerosal as a binding agent preservative. While not elemental mercury, thimerosal was derived from mercury, and thus just as suspect as Salk's formaldehyde.

In any case, there's a lot of people concerned about what they are putting into their bodies. And while the use of aluminum adjuvants has been proven safe over decades of vaccinations, every single one still must be tested in order to determine efficacy and safety. Pushing a vaccine that doesn't work is just as bad as pushing a vaccine that causes harm to the patient.

To be fair, it is likely the alum compound that causes vaccine reactions, which means it's up to medical science to do better! Thankfully there are many new adjuvants on the market, including MF59, an oil emulsion which is derived from shark liver; most people consider this a much better option than heavy metal, and it is the most likely candidate for use as an adjuvant in the CoViD-19 vaccine.

If, that is, an adjuvant is needed at all. Currently, there's some speculation that the mRNA in the CoViD vaccine could alone provoke a strong immune response.

Part 5: Putting it all together!

1. Coronavirus was caught quickly and an immediate medical response was established. Using new genetic mapping technology that has only been developed within the last decade, CoViD-19's genome was mapped and made available.

2. CoViD-19 does not hide in, nor does it attack the immune system. For this reason, it's much easier to create an immune response to a vaccine as compared to, say, the HIV virus. Unlike the HIV virus and the common cold, CoViD-19 also currently has limited strains and mutations, making it the perfect time to create a vaccine.

3. The vaccine does not use viral particles. It doesn't need to be "incubated" and then tested after each incubation period. There is no chance for the vaccine to cause the virus in any dose. Instead, it uses synthetic messenger RNA in prompt the body into synthesizing the protein shell of the virus, which activates our immune system.

4. It contains a natural adjuvant found in shark liver oil, rather than heavy metal aluminum. This cuts down on the testing time. Adjuvants provoke an immune response more quickly than the virus alone, although Pfizer stated that the vaccine would likely work without one.

5. Lastly, this can't be overstated enough, the idea behind testing is to have a successful trial in as many people as possible. Other vaccines fail because of unfavorable trials. (For example, chicken pox took so long to develop a vaccine for because of the lack of technologies we had today leading to low efficacy rates in test subjects.) Compared with the MMR vaccine, which has an average efficacy of 90%, the CoViD-19 vaccine achieved a 95% efficacy rate in 10 months. There was very little "back to the drawing board" except in one case where the company developing a vaccine trial dropped completely.

I do want to state here that it is normal for medical science to work faster and better as time progresses. Vaccine science IS medical science, and has only been utilized for the last hundred years. All medical sciences progress and become more reliable as time goes on, including heart transplants, treatment of HIV, diabetes, hell--even Alzimers may have a cure in the next decade thanks to various breakthroughs in the last three years.

It is okay to be cautious. It is not okay to dismiss science because you're afraid or because you don't understand it. It's okay to ask for help learning about these things.

We science people aren't here to lie to you. We look forward to a future where serious disease is a simple hindrance, and not a life-changing event.

How To Make Sure That Your Pet Is Healthy And Happy

Pets come in all kinds of packages; some are big, some small, but no matter how cute or cuddly they seem, every single one of us wants our furry friends to be healthy and happy. However, not everyone knows exactly how to keep their beloved pooch as fit and trim as possible. Fortunately, we've got you covered! Check out this list of tips to ensure that your loving companion stays in tip top shape:

1) Feed Him Right - Dogs need plenty of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and water to stay strong and active. According to the ASPCA website, “The average American diet consists mainly of processed foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Most commercial pet foods contain too much corn syrup, refined grains and artificial ingredients such as preservatives, flavor enhancers and coloring agents." Try feeding your dog real meat instead of kibble, like chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, fish and eggs. Also make sure he gets his daily dose of fruits and veggies.

2) Exercise Them Regularly - If you're lucky enough to live somewhere warm during winter months, take him outside regularly for walks and playtime. He'll get more exercise from running around outdoors than sitting inside watching TV. Plus, regular physical activity helps prevent obesity-related health problems down the road. Remember, though, that even indoor activities count toward his total exercise time. For example, playing fetch counts as an outdoor workout because he's getting lots of fresh air while he chases balls through the yard. On the flip side, simply lying on the couch doesn't qualify as exercise unless he's actually moving around and climbing stairs.

3) Keep Up With His Vaccinations - Not surprisingly, vaccines work best when given before exposure to disease. But remember, it takes two weeks for antibodies produced by vaccination to reach peak levels in the bloodstream. So don’t wait until your puppy starts showing signs of illness to give him shots. Instead, start vaccinating well ahead of schedule so that he builds immunity early on. Be especially careful about giving boosters annually since many diseases, like canine parvovirus, require multiple doses over a long period of time.

4) Brush Them Daily - Just like human hair grows longer with frequent washing, fur needs brushingat least once per day to remove dead skin cells and dirt buildup. Brushing also stimulates blood flow which promotes overall good health. In fact, according to the National Canine Research Council, dogs who receive regular grooming sessions tend to have fewer medical issues throughout life than those whose coats aren't brushed often.

5) Provide Appropriate Grooming Care - A clean coat will help protect against fleas, mites and other parasites that can wreak havoc on your pup's body. When choosing a new home for your four legged friend, look for someone who understands proper care and maintenance. This includes making sure there are adequate supplies of food and water available, keeping floors swept free of debris, providing appropriate shelter and ensuring that the house has been properly cleaned prior to bringing your new family member into residence.

6) Get Rid Of Unwanted Hair - Even if you think your dog looks adorable with her fluffy tail or bushy eyebrows, she probably won't feel quite right without shedding hair. While most breeds shed year round, certain breeds may do so seasonally. For instance, huskies shed heavily during the colder months of the year, whereas poodles typically lose their hair during spring and summer. It's important to note, however, that excessive shedding isn't necessarily a sign of poor hygiene. Some pets just naturally shed more than others. If this is the case with your pet, be patient and try not to get frustrated. You'll eventually find a solution that works for both of you!

7) Take Advantage Of Your Dog's Natural Enthusiasm - Playing games together provides a great opportunity to bond with each other. Find fun ways to play such as tugging contests, hide-and-seek, chasing balls, wrestling and retrieving items. As you spend more quality time together, you'll see how much joy your furry pal brings to your everyday routine.

8 ) Make Sure He Has Access To Safe Places And Things - Dogs need plenty of room to run, jump and explore. They should always have access to safe places where they can rest, chew things up and make themselves comfortable. These areas include beds, crates, furniture and toys. Don't forget to provide safety gates to keep them out of trouble too.

9) Give Him Time Outdoors - Since puppies love being outside, take advantage of these opportunities whenever possible. Go hiking, swimming, running and exploring the neighborhood. The key here is to let him experience nature first hand rather than taking him to some boring park full of people and cars. By exposing him to natural surroundings from birth, you're helping shape his personality and teach him to become accustomed to different environments.

10) Encourage Socialization - Every breed develops differently but all dogs benefit greatly from socializing. In fact, it's recommended by many experts that all puppies be exposed to at least one person in addition to their mother and littermates within the first few weeks after birth. This helps prevent aggression issues later down the road when he becomes an adult. However, don't overdo it. Too much exposure early in life could lead to separation anxiety problems later on.

Dickheads of the Month: January 2021

As it seems that there are people who say or do things that are remarkably dickheaded yet somehow people try to make excuses for them or pretend it never happened, here is a collection of some of the dickheaded actions we saw in the month of January 2021 to make sure that they are never forgotten.

Once again, we knew that Donald Trump wasn’t going to take losing well, but when a legion of his most boneheaded supporters storm the Capitol demanding the election result be overturned because a certain thin-skinned orange gobshite had spent several weeks screaming about electoral fraud and, by the way, also set the date of January 6th for some major event, even Mike Pence couldn’t sanction his buffoonery any longer - especially when said buffoonery involved him saying “I love you” to people who were guilty of sedition and, by the way, murder - all of which led to him finally, finally, getting the boot from various social media platforms

...all while Lauren Boebert appeared to be trying to help out the insurrectionists by livetweeting the location of Nancy Pelosi, presumably because Boebert forgot about that Glock she claims to take to work with her every day and was looking for a convenient meat shield, which naturally has nothing to do with her tweeting the day would be like 1776 earlier that morning

...but the real victim in all of this was Melania Trump as it interrupted a photo shoot she was doing, which she somehow thought it was a good idea to mention several days later in a statement riddled with two opinions: “both sides” and “me, me, me” which shows she didn’t realise the optics of rearranging the china as Washington burned around her

...but according to Laura Kuenssberg it was merely a “scuffle” at Congress, as opposed to an organised group attempting to stage an armed insurrection against the government complete with at least one member carrying zip ties

...and finally, we had Ian Austin reminded us that he’s still alive by saying the exact same thing would have happened in the UK with Jeremy Corbyn supporters storming parliament, as if that happened in the four years Corbyn was wishing Austin would go away, then did go away, but sadly didn’t go away

Once again the Tory government think they know better than virologists, epidemiologists and pharmacists with their one-two punch of thinking they can just mix and match the various vaccines available rather than give people two doses of the same vaccine, but they further weaken any chance of vaccination succeeding by ignoring Pfizer’s recommendation the second dose be given within three weeks of the first by adopting a policy of the second dose is given three months later, and it it’s just as likely to be the less effective but cheaper Oxford vaccine they get a dose of

...swiftly followed by the BBC did their bit to encourage people to get vaccinated by reporting a story of a nurse getting a dose of Covid six weeks after her first vaccination jab not by reporting how she was three weeks overdue for the second dose (or, if you prefer, six weeks before her second one) but simply saying that people vaccinated can get Covid, which goes beyond the BBC’s sociopathic inability to criticise Tory fuckups into being downright fucking dangerous - as does their putting sentient testicle Toby Young on Newsnight to say how we’re all overreacting as it's not as bad as all that

Of all the things proven liar Boris Johnson should have said when the UK’s Covid death toll officially passed 100,000 (as opposed to unofficially, which would have been last December), “We have done our best” was not it, because if their best includes not going into lockdown in order to protect landlords, having Dominic Cummings dictate herd immunity in spite the fact that you need vaccinated people for it to work, refusing to have quarantine at airports until July, thinking it would be a bright idea to tell people it’s their patriotic duty to go to the pub, giving them £10 vouchers to go to restaurants, putting children going back to school ahead of any concerns about every single school could become a petri dish and countless other horrifically mismanaged instances, then we should be kept up at night dreading what their worst would be

The fact that Chartwells were given a contract to provide free school dinners with a budget of £30, and the supposed lunches that arrived had £5 worth of food in them which begged the obvious question where the other £25 went, is appalling - but not surprising, as the Tory government gave them the contract and, equally unsurprising, Chartwells was founded by a Tory donor, and equally unsurprising their response to their grift being exposed was to tell all the public school clients they cater to a pack of lies while hoping nobody found out about them doing so...which worked about as well as you can guess

Something possessed the EU to ramp up the row over the AstraZenica vaccine not passing the rigorous tests for over-65s by threatening to trigger Article 16 and limit the number of vaccines that Northern Ireland received, and that something was it was hopelessly misguided as it allowed the Tories to get their hapless response to the pandemic off the front pages for a few days and let the Leave headbangers say this is why we left the EU...in spite this threat would have never been in play if we were still in the EU

There is no way to make jokes about Kellyanne Conway posting what was, in effect, revenge porn photos of her 16-year old daughter, because that sentence is so far out there that it is borderline incomprehensible

In the space of less than twenty seconds proven liar Boris Johnson claimed that there was no prior warning of the new strain of Covid, he had the SAGE paper stating it was coming which was handed to him last September held up in his face, and then said the government acted accordingly.  Yes, you read that right, he claimed the government acted accordingly to something they had no prior warning about, which is literally impossible, all in the space of ten seconds

In the latest hire by the BBC which is cause for both comment and concern, they announced their new chairman would be Tory donor Richard Sharp, whose credentials for the position are being Rishi Sunak’s ex-boss at Goldman Sachs, donating at least £400,000 to the Tory party, and having no background in journalism whatsoever

Smirking bully Priti Patel said that the UK should have closed its borders in March 2020 in order to prevent the spread of Covid.  Presumably she forgot that she was a.) Home Secretary in Marsh 2020 so could have done that, and b.) Home Secretary when she said that the borders should have been closed as that indicates she doesn’t know what’s going on

The terrifying world which Alison Pearson lives in has now started to cross over into our reality due to her responding to one of the four people she hasn’t blocked on Twitter calling her what she is - namely a liar - by siccing the Torygraph’s lawyers on them claiming libel, doing the usual cry bully tactic of learning the person she is harassing works for GlaxoSmithKline so promptly went to their CEO demanding he be fired, and howling about the hate campaign being waged against her - while telling the person, who was saying he was thinking suicidal thoughts after the pile-on that Pearson had instigated even after he had deleted the tweet and apologised , that “You’re finished”

Someday in the future, scholars will study Ted Cruz responding to Biden rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement within hours of getting his feet under the Oval Office desk by pontificating about how terrible it is that Biden is more interested in the citizens of Paris than the jobless of Pittsburgh and wonder just how somebody who doesn't know why the Paris Climate Agreement was named the Paris Climate Agreement ever got to be a senator

...and judging by how Lauren Boebert also latched onto this brainless rhetoric, not only can it be asked how she got to be a senator when she had the opportunity to actually realise Cruz’s mistake, she also begs the question how she can be a senator after her publicly trying to use Nancy Pelosi as a meat shield during the Capitol riots

Unifying force Keir Starmer stated that Labour should be devoting their time to fighting the Tory government rather than fighting court cases, somehow forgetting that by breaking the guidelines of the EHRC report (which he pledged to follow without question months before it was published) is the reason that they’re fighting court cases, and just so happens to be the reason why people are asking how a meeting attended by Starmer, Angela Rayner, Len McCluskey and others either didn't have a single person taking notes, which is David Evans’ entire defence, or they did take notes by quite conveniently lost them

Oh boy, did Wall Street cheerleaders not take it well when r/WallStreetbets exposed to the entire world that the stock market is little more than a game people play with other people’s money - because the teams the Wall Street cheerleaders support started losing, and all it took was a few Redditors investing in Gamestop and Bed Bath & Beyond

Self-awareness sceptic Laurence Fox was entirely predictable in his response to the news that talkRADIO had been booted from Youtube for repeated violations of their ToS, specifically the part about spreading Covid misinformation, screaming the usual things about being “cancelled” - and then, within hours, responded to the BBC announcing a plan of educational programming to help during Lockdown III by saying he will be shielding his children from being “indoctrinated” by the BBC’s “left-wing bias” - which not only means he’s cancelling the BBC, but also had people remember that Billie Piper has custody of his children so it's not like he can even enforce his rules on what his children can and cannot watch

And finally, oh so finally, we have Donald Trump and his discovery of electoral fraud at last - electoral fraud that consisted of Donald Trump calling Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger demanding he change the result and all he needs is Raffensperger to “find” 11,780 votes while also saying that he had proof of vote-counting machines being removed early...and when told they were still in Georgia, changed his lie to say the inner workings had been removed without anyone noticing.  By the way, the only reason anyone knows about this is because Raffensperger told Trump that he wouldn’t release the call to the public if Trump didn't say anything about it - so, of course, the Orange Overlord took to twitter, ran his mouth, and the Washington Post had one hell of an exclusive as a result

Lynphea is very well known for its produce and plentiful tropical and magical plants. However not many people can claim they have actually ever set foot on the planet. 

 - The large planet is uniquely almost entirely landmass and covered by thick forests, spotted by the few great lakes they have. And great they are, more the size of seas of smaller planets, certainly big enough to hold their own Ocean Gates. 

 - Though due to the limited size of the bodies of water, the merfolk residing on Lynphea is rather small, goblin sized and blue grey. They live in large pods and roam the waters without any permanent settlement.

- Contrary to what the lush canopy of trees suggests, forest doesn’t equal forest. The local classification system counts over 100 distinct arboreal biotopes. To outsiders the forests might not appear as different, but the differing seasonal behaviour of the plants and the biotope associated animals are fundamental to the life of Lynpheans.

- As is the case in many other civilisations the environmental circumstances hugely shape the lifestyle people are able to build. Lynphea is no different. Here three factors govern people’s lives: the physical distance from other people, the naturally available resources around them, and the remaining safe to use zones of the planet should no more resources be vailable.

- The people living here have built a life on dependency on wild fruit and cultivation techniques that are very foreign to people used to greenhouse and tended field agriculture. Strategic scattering of seeds and gentle pruning on the nearby vegetation allowed Lynpheans to grow “produce rich paths” close to their settlements. Responsible hunting techniques that are tailored to maintain the population of their prey made sure the species they eat are still able to fulfil their role in the ecosystem. Behaving in a responsible manner like this and avoiding either overpopulation or overuse of resources is critical when people are more dependent on nature than they are on other people producing. 

- When nature really cannot give more - which does happen as no two seasons are the same and sometimes one patch of forest can’t support as many people as it did the year before - settlements pack up and move on, or merge with another group. It’s the natural course of life and no one is too upset about it. The original settlement may be available again in a few season’s time anyway.

- Other than their survival being dependent on nature and hunting/gathering, Lynpheans soon realised that more than all that they also depended on each other. Their lives completely revolve around relations and building up a community. Education with that purpose starts as early as infancy. Child rearing is considered a communal task and all adults are encouraged to take part in it. Children are welcome to look for emotional support outside their birth parents and may even elect a non-related person as their Primary Carer. The adult must be of course consenting, but the process is a natural one and doesn’t happen onto anyone out of the blue- a child wouldn’t name an adult their Prim if they didn’t already spend a lot of time together and formed a bond. 

- Adults who are not comfortable with parenting won’t be any less friendly to probing children, but they have a way of drawing away and being court that lets the kids know they aren’t available. In some settlements adults are encouraged to wear specific colours to signal their reclusiveness, in others henna and other skin markings are used to signal the opposite. It varies from region to region.

- Raised in a sheltered environment of loving adults all around, the education of Lynphean children takes a harsh turn once they reach 11 years and they are released on Nature’s Teaching Path. By that age it is believed children are ready to learn independence as a person and develop their Unique Skills that they can contribute to society with. As important as that is, adults have also developped a way to hammer the ever-present Lynphen thesis home: no one survives without nature. So children are sent into the wilderness alone, as in without adult supervision, where they have to survive on what their teen predecessors have built and what else they can do to on the spot. What could become Lord of the Flies ends in a week of extreme behaviour from the 11-year-olds and forms the steady people who populate the planet. This stage lasts 3 years, adults will however check in on the children a few times a season and supply them with medicine they can’t reasonably produce themselves.

- After that the young adults take up a trade they spend the rest of their lives perfecting. Even though a lot of work is seasonal, and there are lot of seasons where all people in a settlement are needed to help out, people usually have a thing that is uniquely theirs. This might be a cultural practice, a creative hobby ar scientific exploration that they are encouraged to return to once the tasks of the day are done. 

- The community focused aspect both determines and limits the size of settlements. As the planet is comparable in size to that of Jupiter, but only has the population of Andros dispersed over the huge habitable zone. The majority lives in settlements of 200-500 people, but a town can get as small as 23-30 people, which equals one family unit.

- Numbers concerning the inhabitants of the planet, be it human, elf, mer or other are only estimates, as with a lack of centralised governance and the remote settlements official registries are impossible to make. But even if they did, Lynphea doesn’t share a lot with the outside world and doesn’t allow a lot of trespassing.

- With the absence of one governing body there never was a need for people to develop last names, which was mostly done to differentiate individuals in filing lists, mark families and track new births. As all of that is unnecessary on Lynphea, people have opted to give children several first names. In the North most commonly two names are used and the top ten most poplar names are related to bird species. The Eastern Forest and the Equatorial belt uses three names, one of which is chosen later in life by the child themselves after Nature’s Teaching Path is complete. Even further south four names are custom, and in the most eccentric region of the West with the largest settlement of 6000 people, up to six names are used.

- All three names are equal and when forced to off planet, Lynpheans will give it all as first name and attach a geographical tag. Flora’s full name on her Magics resident card reads ‘Flora Augmenta Lisahani of the Kapalong-Elet Valley’ where only the first three are actually her name. Kapalong and Elet are the two rivers that encircle the settlement she grew up with. 

- Spread so thinly and without a government one wouldn’t really think unity persisted on the planet beyond the individual settlements, so it is surprising to learn that the humans of Lynphea do think about the planet as one single country. They speak the same language with some dialects, they celebrate the same weather dependent holidays and practice the same birth and funeral techniques. The colours of their cloths or melodies of their songs that mark the regional differences aren’t all that important to them.

- Lynpheans subscribe to one federalist approach though, and that is the election of a Council, whose job is to collect information across the planet and share the most vital points concerning all residents. With the best interest of all people in mind at all times, they are also tasked with electing the Representatives they send off-world and with overseeing the Quarantine Workers.

- The planet that has been described as close to “paradise on earth” as possible has been battling with a horrible environmental/pandemic issue for decades. There is a rotten core in the Eastern Forests, caused by a malicious fungal growth that carries a very dangerous virus able to infect plants and humans alike. The disease it carries is highly infectious and is deadly in all known cases*, so research has been slow and little insight has been revealed about its cause, progression, and ways of halting the spread of the rot on the planet. The utmost imperative of Quarantine Workers is to isolate infected people or plants or even whole regions and to limit the spread to the best of their abilities. This in the rarest cases can mean abandoning communities.

- Entry to Lynphea is therefore tightly regulated with visa and requires a course of vaccinations as a pre-exposure premeditation. Visitors - and locals alike for that matter- are forbidden from even going near the edge of the infected zone. 

- Exit is even more strictly watched. Many adventurous Lynpheans have been very disappointed with the decision of the immigration office denying them opportunities and exploration off planet. It is hard not to feel trapped when all your life’s opportunities depend on the wind direction and dispersion pattern of deadly spores. Even worse is it for those who crash landed on the planet or came visiting and just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. They cannot ever leave for the fear of spreading the disease to other planets is to great. Lynphea has to become their new home, as it sooner or later would be their tomb.

- For this the Council and the Representatives are incredibly invested in international relations. The more people off planet they can enlist in their cause, the sooner they will be able to offer a cure and prevent 20% of their population still dying from it every year. They joined the Company of Light when it was still a war effort under the leadership of their planet’s own famous Farin Ebenezor Saladin - who has since then fallen out of the public’s favour. How well these  efforts continue to work entirely depends on the Representatives, six families of diplomats living off planet. As election time rolls around, the Council is split as ever, with all eyes on Krystal Gamma, daughter of one of the current Representatives, born off planet, but raised for this exact task. Will she run for office once she becomes of age when summer rolls around?

In the wee hours of Saturday morning, the House of Representatives passed the American Rescue Plan, the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill requested by the Biden administration. The vote was 219 to 212, with two Democrats—Jared Golden (D-ME) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR)—voting no. Not a single Republican voted for the bill.

The coronavirus relief bill illustrates a crisis in our democracy.

This measure is enormously popular. On Thursday, the day before the House took up the bill, a poll by Morning Consult/Politico showed that 76% of Americans liked the measure, including 60% of Republicans. It includes $1400 stimulus checks which, together with the $600 checks in the previous package, get us to the $2000 checks that former president Trump, a Republican, demanded.

It includes increased unemployment benefits of $400 weekly, provides $350 billion in aid to state and local governments, establishes tax credits for children, provides money to reopen schools, funds $8.5 billion to distribute vaccines, and gives small business relief.

The bill is popular among Republican mayors and governors, whose governments cannot borrow to make up for tax revenue lost because of the pandemic and who are facing deficits of $80 to $100 billion even with money from the last relief packages. The deficits will require devastating cuts on top of the 1.3 million jobs that have already been cut in the past year. Relief is “not a Republican issue or a Democrat issue,” Fresno, California, mayor Jerry Dyer told Griff Witte of the Washington Post earlier this month. “It’s a public health issue. It’s an economic issue. And it’s a public safety issue.”

Those in favor of the measure note that while there is still close to $1 trillion unspent from previous coronavirus relief bills, currently unspent money has been assigned already: it is distributed among programs that are designed to spend it over a period of time. This includes federal employment benefits, which are distributed weekly; the Paycheck Protection Program, which is held in reserve for employers to apply for funds from it; enhanced medical matching funds to be distributed as the pandemic requires; and tax breaks to be spent as people file their tax returns.

The chair of the Federal Reserve, which oversees our banking system, Jerome H. Powell, has backed the idea of increased federal spending; so has Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. Powell was nominated to his current position by Trump (he was nominated to the Federal Reserve Board by President Barack Obama); Yellen is a Biden appointee.

This is a bill that should have gotten some Republican votes in the House of Representatives.

But it didn’t. Republican lawmakers are complaining about the partisan vote and scoffing that President Biden promised to unify the country. But the problem is not the bill. The problem is the Republican lawmakers, who are determined to oppose anything the Democrats propose.

The American Rescue Plan bill now goes to the Senate, where Republican senators appear to be united against it. In a statement, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) complained about the Democrats’ “deliberately partisan process” in writing the bill, but the Republicans willing to meet with President Biden—McConnell was not one of them-- proposed a measure that provided less than one-third the relief in the present bill. There is enormous urgency to passing the bill quickly, since current federal unemployment benefits expire on March 14.

The Senate is evenly split between the Democrats and the Republicans, with each party holding 50 seats (technically, Senators Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont are Independents, but they currently work with the Democrats). Although each party effectively holds 50 seats, the Democrats represent 41.5 million more Americans than the Republicans do, in nation that has 328.2 million people.

In addition to their disproportionate power in the Senate, the Republicans can stop legislation through the filibuster. This is a holdover from an earlier era, in which a senator could stop a bill approved by a majority by refusing to stop talking about it, which would prevent the bill from coming to a vote unless senators voted to invoke “cloture,” a process that limits consideration of a pending bill to 30 additional hours. Today, cloture requires 60 votes.

The filibuster was rarely used before about 1960; in the early twentieth century, southern senators used it primarily to stop civil rights legislation. But as the volume of business in the Senate raised the need to streamline debate, the Senate reformed the filibuster so that a senator could simply threaten a filibuster to kill a bill.

Our current Republican lawmakers use these “holds” to kill any measure that cannot muster 60 votes, effectively turning the Senate into a body that requires not a majority to pass legislation, but rather a supermajority. Those who defend the filibuster argue that this supermajority requirement will make senators create bills that are bipartisan, but in fact it has meant that a small minority controls the Senate.

So Democrats will have to pass the American Rescue Plan through a procedure known as “reconciliation,” which enables certain budget bills to pass with a simple majority rather than the 60 votes currently necessary for a regular bill. But the Senate can only pass three bills a year through this process, and there are strict limits to what can be in them. The Senate parliamentarian, a nonpartisan judge of the procedural rules of the Senate, has decided that the $15-an-hour federal minimum wage in the current bill does not meet the requirements of reconciliation. Fifty-nine percent of Americans like the idea of raising the minimum wage to $15 by 2025, as the bill sets out, but the hike cannot be included in the convoluted process necessary to get the bill through without the supermajority the current filibuster system requires.

Senate leadership can overrule or fire the parliamentarian, but that really doesn’t matter in this case because at least one Democrat, Senate Joe Manchin (D-WV), opposes the increased minimum wage. His opposition would sink the entire measure because the Democrats need every one of their 50 votes.

The American Rescue Plan will likely pass—without the increased minimum wage—but it will do so only because the Democrats won both Georgia Senate seats in January, giving them an equal number of senators to the Republicans.

The Democrats will be able to pass a bill popular with more than 3 out of 4 of us only because they have a slight majority in the House and can use a special budget measure to work around the Republican senators who represent 41.5 million fewer Americans than the Democrats do.

The coronavirus relief bill illustrates just how dangerously close we are to minority rule.

Nova Scotia reports three new cases of COVID-19; active cases increase to 14

Health officials in Nova Scotia identified three new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. One previously reported case is now considered recovered, as the number of active cases in the province has increased to 14.

All three of Wednesday's new cases were identified in the province’s Central Zone. Public Health says one case is related to travel to New Brunswick. The person is self-isolating, as required. The other two cases are under investigation, as more information needs to be gathered.

"Six cases over two days is a low number, but it is the most cases we have seen on consecutive days in close to a month. It is a reminder that COVID-19 is still here, with active cases in every health zone in our province, and that is why we cannot let complacency set in," said Premier Stephen McNeil in a news release. "Our public health teams are working hard to contain the virus and we can support them by following all the public health protocols."

"As we've seen in other provinces, the situation can change rapidly. We must continue to remain vigilant and follow public health protocols," said Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health in a news release. "When you wash your hands, wear a mask, keep physical distance, stay home when you're sick, isolate when required, and get tested regularly, you are preventing the spread of COVID-19 and keeping yourself, your loved ones and your community safe." 

N.S. CASE DATA

The Nova Scotia Health Authority’s labs completed 922 tests on Tuesday. The province has completed 307,306 tests since the pandemic began.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 1,600 cumulative COVID-19 cases in Nova Scotia. Of those, 1,521 cases are now considered recovered, and there have been 65 deaths, leaving 14 active cases.

There is one person in hospital due to COVID-19 in Nova Scotia, who is in the intensive care unit.

There are cases confirmed across the province, but most have been identified in the Central Zone, which contains the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The provincial government says cumulative cases by zone may change as data is updated in Panorama, the province’s electronic information system.

The numbers reflect where a person lives and not where their sample was collected.

Western Zone: 96 cases (2 active case)

Central Zone: 1,296 cases (10 active cases)

Northern Zone: 128 cases (1 active case)

Eastern Zone: 80 cases (1 active case)

The provincial state of emergency, which was first declared on March 22, 2020, has been extended to Feb. 21, 2021.

VACCINE UPDATE

Nova Scotia's COVID-19 online dashboard now provides an update on the amount of vaccines that have been administered to date.

As of Wednesday, 24,049 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far, with 8,830 people in Nova Scotia having received a second dose.

Of the vaccines administered 11,059 were health care workers, and 2,268 were long-term care residents.

"This week we expect to receive 10,530 doses of Pfizer vaccine, half of which will be reserved for second doses," Strang said. "This will be our biggest single shipment of vaccine to date, it will, it will be delivered to seven cold storage sites across the province, and this number of doses does take into account but we will now be drawing six rather than five doses per vial of the Pfizer vaccine."

Strang also provided some details on clinics to vaccinate health-care workers at clinics in Halifax, Kentville, and Cape Breton and at long-term care homes.

"The final three health-care worker clinics will be set up and ready to receive product later this week in Antigonish, along the South Shore, and in Cumberland," Strang said. "Vaccine was delivered to eight long-term care facilities last week and two more will receive vaccine this week. In long-term care, we have clinics running in multiple locations this week. Booking opened up this morning for the prototype immunization clinic at the IWK for Nova Scotians who are 18, years of age or older."

NOVA SCOTIANS ENCOURAGED TO SEEK ASYMPTOMATIC TESTING

Public health is strongly encouraging Nova Scotians to seek asymptomatic COVID-19 testing, particularly if they have attended several social interactions, even with their own social circle.

COVID-19 tests can be booked through the provinces online self-assessment COVID-19 tool, or by calling 811.

People can also visit one of Nova Scotia’s many rapid pop-up testing sites that continue to operate throughout the province.

COVID ALERT APP

Canada’s COVID-19 Alert app is available in Nova Scotia.

The app, which can be downloaded through the Apple App Store or Google Play, notifies users if they may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

A review of Queen: The Early Years

Well I have finally finished reading Queen: The Early Years, and now that I have read all 198 pages of this book I feel very confident in saying:

Yall I don’t think this is a good book. Like I really, really do not think this is a good book.

I’ve talked about some of this once or twice before, but I wanted to get all my thoughts about this in one place so, here we go. Brace yourselves, this is going to get wordy (as all my posts invariably do).

The Sources (or lack thereof)

The author wrote this book based on interviews with “over 60 friends and colleagues” of the band. Contrary to an earlier post of mine, he does provide a full list of the people he spoke with, however a lot of these connections are... dubious at best.

He does interview former band members of the groups they were each with before Queen, which might be the only good bits of this book.
