Whether you know it as RayForce, Gunlock, Layer Section or Galactic Attack, TAITO 1993 arcade shooter is a real classic! Full longplay, playthrough, walkthrough, guide & gameplay from the Ray’z Arcade Chronology collection release on PS4. RayForce might just be the best shoot'em, up (shmups) TAITO ever released, yes better than Darius Gaiden, which is an excellent game itself.

Ray’z Arcade Chronology
After re-releasing the Darius games as the Darius Cozmic Collection and G-Darius / G-Darius HD, M2 has returned to Taito’s other big shoot-em-up series with the Ray’z Arcade Chronology. The “Ray’z” name seems to be Taito’s official designation for the 90s-era trilogy consisting of RayForce, RayStorm, and RayCrisis, which all feature the same incredibly satisfying lock-on laser game mechanics as well as the usual spacey soundtracks from inhouse band Zuntata. This collection offers ports of all three games, based on the original arcade versions, developed by M2 as part of their ShotTriggers line of shoot-em-ups. Beyond their incredible emulation accuracy, they also include gadgets on the side of the screen, which let you know your current stage, the difficulty rank (if applicable), and status of your lock-on lasers. A particularly amusing option features background noise recorded from the Hey arcade in Akihabara, Tokyo, if you want to further immerse yourself in the action.

Galactic Attack / Layer Section vs RayForce (Nintendo Switch Versions)
Upon releasing my video for Ray’z Arcade Chronology, I was contacted by a viewer, who asked about the differences between RayForce (arcade) from Ray’z and the SEGA Saturn version of RayForce. I agreed to do a side by side comparison on my YouTube channel. Overall, the games are not very different. City Connection released the Saturn version for modern hardware. While I do not notice the lag…

i played through Rayforce and Raystorm the other day - needless to say, if we consider the cost of a credit, getting to the end of those games alone was probably worth the $35 for the collection alone. Taito doesn't fuck around. they'r really great games though, with awesome scoring systems. gotta love homing lasers! great OSTs as well, done by ZUNTATA... i think? the collection mentioned TAMAYO as the OST guy, but that could just be what he went by back then.
have you ever played Rayforce or any of the other Ray series?
I haven't played any of the Ray games yet, but I do want to! I think RayCrisis interests me the most, it's got a very cool style to it. And yeah, the homing lasers are really satisfying; I've played a few other games with similar mechanics like Soukyugurentai and KAMUI.
By the way, ZUNTATA isn't actually a person, it's the name of Taito's music group as a whole, so various composers have come under that label over the years.

Media Log 2024 Entry 2 - Rayforce, Raystorm, and Raycrisis - 5/5
Tumblr media
Simulated arcade ambience! Can you believe that?
Rayforce (a.k.a Layer Section a.k.a Gunlock), Raystorm, and Raycrisis, the three shmups that make up Taito's Ray series, are some of the best examples of what the mid-to-late 90s arcades had to offer. Combine that with M2's amazing porting skills and additional features, and you have a perfect collection of pretty much perfect games.
Rayforce, the first in the series and the only sprite-based game, is easily one of the best mid-90s shmup offerings you can play. The spritework is fantastic, the music is somehow even better than that, and the gameplay is incredibly smooth and intuitive. The lock-on laser is a very fun mechanic and ties into a very simple yet incredibly effective scoring system - the more enemies you shoot down with the lock-on laser at once, the more points you get! The lock-on laser is just satisfying to use, too. Being an arcade shmup, the difficulty is of course pretty wack, but that's just part of the experience - they give you free play for a reason.
Raystorm is the second in the series and is probably the only one I have some level of problem with, and that's only because of the context it exists in. It brings the series both from sprites to 3D models and from vertical aspect ratio to horizontal and, alongside this, introduces a few extra mechanics: namely, a second ship to choose from with a different laser system and shot type, the Hyper Laser, a special attack used when you use all of your locks on a single target, and a screen-clearing special attack charged by killing enemies with the lock-on laser! These are all great additions of course, but Raystorm falters a little for reasons I can't totally put my finger on. It feels less like the sequel to Rayforce and more like a strange in-between of Rayforce and Raycrisis, which is less its own problem and more just it being a victim of being between those two games.
Raycrisis is the real, improved sequel to Rayforce that Raystorm wishes it was. Everything from both games, plus a randomized set of 42 different routes to play through, a much cooler presentation, and the Encroachment system, a constantly increasing percentage decreased by killing enemies and, if you hit 100%, you're forced into an encounter with the final boss early! It's also attached to the game's difficulty and getting the true ending - really, encroachment is everything in Raycrisis, making it a very interesting game to play. It's probably my favorite of the three!
Overall, the Ray series is three examples of Taito's arcade excellence, and are well worth it to play if you like shmups... though the normal price of $50 US for the collection is a little too steep.
