I have a lot of thoughts. I think for 2024 I don't want to be around people who believe writing and fandoms are a competition. I am tired of having to triple check and guess at peoples intentions. I am tired of being wary of people.

Regardless, to an extent, you have to be wary with everyone, but I am tired of it tipping over into a paranoia. I think a lot of people have lost the meaning of fandom. That, or I have a very clearly different definition.

I view fandom as a fun hobby. An outlet. I like treating everyone equally. I imagine us all in a space where we are on equal ground. We are free to talk to whoever unless there has been a block in place or a clear boundry expressed.

We share 'food' (fanfics, fanart, idle thoughts, fun convos, etc) for the sake of Sharing. Not for the sake of being better than one another. Not for the sake of being 'the best' at xyz. We may feel bad when our 'food' doesn't seem as well liked as others, but thats not the others fault. Not even our fault. Some people may have just ate when we put our food out. Maybe some people hadn't even arrived yet. But its there waiting.

We have our friends. Our friends have their friends. We just co-exist.

I don't compare. I don't look at my masterlist, all my notes, and heave sighs that its smaller than so and sos. I don't laugh when its bigger than others. I look at it as an archive for what I was able to do this year.

I do not view people as their follower counts. I don't base my actions towards people around numbers. I base my actions towards others on how they have treated me, my friends, or others. I don't think of this as a numbers game. I don't think of this as something to 'win' at.

I can tell you that I used to, years before I joined cyb*rd fandoms. I can tell you I fell for people coaching me on how to 'behave' in fandoms, that I should only focus on numbers, not people. I can tell you it made me miserable. Made my love for writing and similar take a heavy hit. That it felt fine at first, until I realized viewing people as a number meant thats all they viewed me as. Another step towards some bullshit about 'popularity'.

Why do we want faceless numbers to be more important than genuine connection with others. Why do we make faceless numbers into ammo to use against others. It gives me a headache. I am tired of trying to make human connections based off of a love of a shared hobby only to realize, that oh. They love the 15 minutes of fame, not those who surround them. That oh, this is not made with the love for sharing creation, this was made for views. For clicks. For 'popularity'. I am tired.

do you believe you have a type of character you gravitate towards writing? reiterating this from the last time i filled this out: little guys and pensive freaks. i also fundamentally like characters who experience internal conflict of interests between their morality and their loyalty/duty/other social trappings. its tasty!

do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? i love digging deep into lore and piecing it together even if its not immediately evident and a bit fragmented (its the soulsborne enjoyer in me). BUT if i need to do this for a main or major character with a bajillion dialogue and context clues strewn across three playthroughs of a game and i could easily overlook things i would be a little too scared of getting soemthing wrong. "oh x loves orange juice" "WRONG x said as a one off in the middle of this heavy story segment that he hates orange juice and prefers strawberry milk actually" i would fucking die. i would die

what kind of scenes, situations etc do you believe you enjoy writing the most? UNRELIABLE NARRATION. shit you look at and go "hm that aint whats going on rn at all". love that shit. i try to not overuse it but i love when it becomes more evident midway through a scene. good stuff. i also love writing impulsive stupid responses and vividly descriptive scenes, but also i love writing affection and devotion in general, even if exceptionally gooey and cavity-inducing, even if ill-advised and misplaced. there's so much more i can add here but i love writing i love writing with people i love writing with y'all. love and peace.

and violence. i used to be scared of fight scenes but now i love thinking in those milliseconds between the violence. flurries and slurries of blood. can i rip more shit apart pretty please

do you have any scenario in mind for your muse(s) that gets you thinking “man i hope i get to write this one day”? [stuffs my fist in my mouth and screams]

incredibly loosely speaking. i want edward to realise he's been a bit fucked up actually and have to sit in that thought instead of shrugging past it as usual. i want chad to sit with someone and just connect with them so they don't feel as alone (yes this has happened i just love when this happens). i want denning to forcibly feel an emotion, and whether they get better or worse from it might depend entirely on their company.

favorite TOA-related memories? sorry that i keep bringing up edwards 37.5 damage astra during the final fight of apollyon ouranos i just can't stop thinking about it. that's so much fucking damage. that said i loved banding together against the impossible and FUCKING WINNING

Championnats RD-

junior ice dance is so fun - so far they’re going much harder than seniors on the period costumes. a number of these teams were at Next Gen, so it was fun to see them live. i’m adopting Aurea Cincon-Debout and Earl Jesse Celestino- their Jacksons RD is adorable, and they’re currently in 2nd. Gauthier/Thieren made their debut. not sure if they’re coming off injury or if they had a conflict with Next Gen. their Jagger/Bowie RD went from Honkytonk Woman to Fame and Dancin in the Street, which musically felt all over the place

Senior RD was an entirely IAM event - Romain wore sunglasses the entire time but also was peering over them to watch the teams, so idk if they were style or jet lag or what 😅 Harris/Chan with an ABBA RD that felt like a very natural choice for them. Fabbri/Ayer really solid. this is the 2nd year where they skated well here but also felt like they got a bonus from the home judging panel. Pham/Spiridonov- a program that lets them dance - shows you how important packaging is that he always felt overshadowed by Lorraine and programs that didn’t do him any favors at WISA. these two are still learning each other and have things to work out, but the material brings out good qualities in them - like he has some natural dance ability

Fournier/Zhu are committing all the way to their performances - sometimes he feels like he’s focused on his expression more than on her. this RD doesn’t stand out from the many disco programs. but omg Hannah and Ye’s does - big time - it feels like they took a page from Lilah and Lewis’s playbook in that it’s engineered to bring the crowd to their feet at Worlds. there’s cheering and whistling from the crowd on the track itself, the way they play with tempo changes to build momentum to an organic climax - this is potentially the most exciting RD we’ve seen so far this season. there are sharp details in this already, they’re both projecting- i’m excited about this one

hm. Thinking about Edega.. he’s very interesting to me so I’m gonna ramble for a sec about him.

after 5-2N Ian states this is the most Edega has ever spoken to (Lucky in specific) It’s strange for a cold man like him, but something similar happened with Hugh. The only two people Edega puts priority on were famous and influential, people who really could get word out. Mayhaps Edega wishes to give them the best care possible and do something revolutionary, getting their hospital on the chart. After all he stated himself that their hospital was pretty under due to the staff drought that they need an experimental intern to help. If he could do something revolutionary in medicine and really get that out there things would be better for patients and the staff.

However. This is clearly overshadowed by selfishness. Edega is constantly on Ada and Ian for their productivity and time management, why aren’t they working harder and wasting their time when there’s so much to be done. Everyone must be self sufficient in Edega’s eyes, as long as what needs to be done is done for a patient, it’s good enough. Along with this, Edega always refers to the “ultimate cure” that’s being worked on as HIS, it’s HIS cure all. Despite seemingly Ian doing constant work for this project, intern and Ada gathering the tests and information, and the patients (especially Lucky) being guanine pigs to HIS cure. It’s clear the fame of a cure all bringing way to new things is snuffed by Edega’s intentions to take all fame for himself. They’re subordinates, why should they get credit?

And on that last note- the Patients. It’s already bad that Edega treats them as nothing more then numbers and care for them according to their status, but actively testing on them? The intern rhythm doctor program is stated to be just that a program. However, this program is not an equivalent alternative to healing. It helps in the short term, yes, but as seen with almost every patient they continue to need more treatments then just the one. Cole and Nicole’s addictions weren’t solved by the program, that was having each other, making the result of them being “cured” by the program a false positive.

Then there’s Insomniac. There’s no way Edega could of missed the reports of power getting knocked out in the hospital and my man’s literally LOSING part of his heart. And to be fair while they didn’t know the program caused it, he still didn’t take any procedures like stopping the program or going further into figuring out what went wrong to cause genuine damage. Lucky was being admitted and there was no time to waste on that, this was his chance to bring fame! Ian of course figured it out after chapter 5 inbetween working on this “cure” Edega wanted but it’s pretty clear Edega isn’t stopping the Rhythm Doctor program anytime soon. He’s too close now.

Call him Gabriel Icarus Edega, the sun is grand but the cost will drag him and everyone else down with him.

Supernatural Battle of the Episodes!!

American Nightmare took out Regarding Dean in the closest match we've seen yet. It was 50/50 till the last 2 minutes!!

American Nightmare needs 1 more win to make it to the Hall of Fame and it will probably be Regarding Dean that takes over! So those who love RD, there's still a chance for it to make it to the HoF too!

February 2024 Mangum Dental Hike-of-the-Month

Grandfather Juniper Trail  - In Memory of the Granite Mountain Hotshots

#38 Upper Pasture Trail to #39 White Rock Spring Trail

Distance: 3 – 4.5 miles

 Difficulty:  Easy to Moderate due to rough terrain

 Elevation gain: minimal

Mangum Dental Hike-of-the-Month is reprinted from July 2016 and describes a hike to the Grandfather Juniper, a legendary tree with local fame.  The Juniper tree may be the largest known Juniper in the world with a circumference measuring over 26 ft. at the base.  The tree is estimated to be 1000 years old and was named one of Arizona’s “Magnificent 7” trees for 2015.  Despite these amazing statistics, the tree is special for another reason.  The plaque at the base of the tree tells the entire story. In short, this tree was spared from the Doce Fire in June 2013 through the valiant efforts of the Granite Mountain Hotshots from the City of Prescott Fire Department.  Later that month, responding to another urgent threat to homes and communities, 19 of the 20 hotshots tragically lost their lives. This hike is dedicated to their memory and this tree is a representation of how much we miss our 19 heroes.

Directions: From the intersection of Williamson Valley Road and Iron Springs Road, travel west on Iron Springs for 6.8 miles to Contreras Rd. (between mile marker 8 and 9).  Turn right on Contreras Road and head north .7 miles to a parking area on your right.  Those with low clearance vehicles will want to park here and start the hike. Moderate to high clearance vehicles can follow the rough road to the left (north) out of the parking area (Road 9261U).  The road follows a fence for another .7 miles to the trailhead.  

 The hike: A gate and a sign designate trail #38, Upper Pasture Trail. Follow this old road for slightly less than 1 mile to the well-marked junction of trails #38 and  #39, White Rock Springs Trail.  Turn left or north onto trail #39 and hike for just over ½ mile.  As the trail nears the turn-off for the tree, there will be a short stretch of quartz rock along the path then the trail drops into a creek bed.  Look to the left for a trail marker and follow the single-track trail that heads west. This short path will lead to the Grandfather Juniper, marked with a beautiful monument and plaque dedicated to the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

Reasons why the Fire Emblem franchise peaked at Tellius:

main characters have an actual personality, backstory, individual goals/desires, established flaws, and a character arc

no dating sim elements

the sheer amount of queer coded characters (Kyza, Heather, Ike & Soren, Tibarn & Reyson, etc)

Seriously, Kyza is a silver-haired cat-person with they/them pronouns. They are almost literally the "has blue silver hair and pronouns" meme

the running gag of Ike having absolutely zero interest in dating women

the laguz, which are a race of people who can transform into cats, lions, tigers, wolves, hawks, ravens, herons, and dragons

an anti-prejudice message which, while not perfect, does explore, among other things: being willing to have uncomfortable conversations, classism, the ramifications of war on the underprivileged, and how religious doctrine can be twisted to justify prejudice

Soren and Micaiah being the best narrative foils (sharing nearly identical backstories and strikingly similar stoic love interests, yet having opposite personalities)

a plot that's driven by character actions and motivations and not just something that happens to the characters

the ultimate ally Ike Fire Emblem who doesn't always understand what he's talking about but damn does he have the spirit and the willingness to learn

the greil mercenaries literally inventing the found family trope

not allowing the player to vicariously date whichever scantily-clad anime waifu strikes their fancy

Ike betraying everybody's expectations by, instead of growing up into a heart-throb bishonen pretty boy, evolving into a bara muscle man

Ike also betraying everybody's expectations by rejecting any fame, noble titles, or other fancy gifts others try to bestow upon him, preferring to live the simple life of the everyman, because that's where the true heart of humanity lies

Ike's absolute brutal honesty and snarky one-liners

did i mention that there are characters that can turn into cats and wolves?

Ranulf especially has the most early 2000's high school OC aesthetic possible with his blue hair, ears, and tail, his cheshire cat energy, and his heterochromia. Arguably Ranulf is Claude's spiritual predecessor, with his playful personality hiding a sharp intellect, except Ranulf actually has a paired ending with the male protagonist

I'm not saying PoR and RD don't have their flaws (they're borderline unplayable at times with the difficulty spikes, the lack of support conversations in RD leaves the new units with much to be desired in terms of characterization, the offensive stereotypes of Heather the man-hating lesbian and Kyza the flamboyant femboy, the lack of racial diversity, how much grinding the Dawn Brigade needs in order to become decent units, the English localization team screwing up the translation in several key conversations or outright adding extra content to push their Ike/Elincia agenda, etc)

But in comparison to the newer games, with their blank-slate protagonists, dating sim elements, and lack of attention on creating a cohesive plot that isn't segmented into three or more routes that all only contain a fraction of the entire story...

Well, the Tellius games are just superior.

Like sure, Heather being a stereotypical man-hating lesbian is not great. But I'd rather have that than have a small number of bisexual options that exist solely for the representation points, while also ensuring that they don't have to be bisexual, if the player so chooses, to avoid hurting the feelings of the cishets

So far I have played PoR, RD, Shadows of Valencia, two of the three Fates games, and the golden deer route of Three Houses

Shadows of Valencia was also very good, if too short. And I will forever hold my golden deer students close to my heart. But I really hope that future FE titles start putting more focus on developing good characters and stories, and less focus on things like character customization and player choice. I'm not saying those things are bad, but they're not what I play Fire Emblem for. I came to Fire Emblem for the high fantasy world politics, the world-building, and the compelling narratives. Knowing what you’ve said about celebrities in the past and that you’re a Ted Lasso fan I thought you were a good person to share my most unpopular opinion with. While I love Ted my opinion of Sudeikis is not good as apparently he’s been rumored to be creepy towards women and I think why we’re seeing the press say he’s just like Ted irl is cause’ they’re hiding those darker elements.

I love unpopular opinion sharing, anon! Welcome to The Den Of Crazy (it's a working title). I am not really shocked about the rumors surrounding Jason Sudekis? First of all, Ted Lasso, while I am sure there are genuinely good people in the world, does not exist in this iteration in real life. I actually think the show is trying at times to point out that there is a limit to goodness, but regardless, I have been fortunate enough to have known some extremely kind people in my lifetime but Ted is more of a caricature of them or a meld of the best traits of several others than he is an actual representation of a human. And thusly, surely Jason Sudekis is not it. Fame changes a person super quick, anon. Money, adoration, etc, it warps a person, and it must, because how do you make THAT MUCH money and see the world around you yet feel no urge to help?

Seriously, the money Jason Sudekis makes, or the money the RD actors make for one single episode could fund a school in a developing country for an entire year and mean that so many kids have access to education and a better future. And they just...don't care? Why??? I have often asked myself what is broken inside celebrities that they have so many resources and do so little with it, anon, but alas, whether my own lack of understanding or just the selfishness that comes with fame, I don't know what it is.

Maybe that's why Jason Sudekis purports himself to be like Ted too. He may have kind traits, or maybe it's a talking point for promo, but wouldn't that much fame warp a person's sense of self? That's also why we really shouldn't place celebrities on pedestals. Because he ends up being a normal guy, or worse, a creepy guy, and he's knocked down off that pedestal. We can only really be disappointed when we do that.

Welcome back to SirWow rambles about Rhythm doctor thoughts, this time more just spitballing a ton of thoughts. Per usual cut to not flood TL

First off Samurai and Insom in the baseball arc; Samurai is generally someone who has hitting stuff come natural to him. Insom is still suffering from insecurity and jealousy deep down towards Samurai. As such he’s trying to do better then him and despite being a better 2nd pitcher with Nicole, Insom keeps pushing Lucky to be a main hitter. Lucky however felt Insom going down the same path of fame chasing he went down so took him aside while Samurai was hitting. Insom chilled out and let go of his pride to celebrate Samurai’s winning shot. Lucky and Insom also getting a strange but silent understanding of each other.

Lucky and Miner I see becoming surprisingly good friends with a lot in common (just bros, sorry minerscales fans!) Lucky is a brick wall and generally won’t shove on his ideals but Miner is very open to change even if he’s a bit too trusting sometimes. I need to write more about them but a silly thought I had with them was them being the ones to help set up the talent show Iv been writing. Miner constantly trying to make Lucky laugh with silly party things and the thing to get him being a inflatable anvil taking 3 slow seconds to fall on him.

Logan and Hailey.,.. Logan finally admitting his love for Hailey over playing (Nicole’s) guitar behind their school late into the evening. Lucky and Nicole teamed up, giving Logan monotone but genuine support to go for it.

I’ve more or less moved on from Riverdale. 

I am ONLY interested in Jabitha of which we have NO content right now. 

RAS being out a show to screw up.

Cole being released from this toxic show/cast.

I have spent last few months re-watching old favorites or reading old favorites. I’ve been re-discovering what it is to watch and read things I ENJOY and it has just cemented how little I enjoy most of Riverdale. Aforementioned exception of Jabitha. Who do make me smile.

I only want to watch or read stories that entertain me or make me happy. I like escapist entertainment. Riverdale isn’t escapist entertainment. It’s a flailing show with no rhyme or purpose servicing too many ego’s. It allows personal ambitions, relationships and biases to affect it’s direction rather than the audience’s enjoyment of the show or letting the characters move in realistic manner for THEM. It inspires no trust in it’s audience. There is no logical path to follow to ascertain it’s endgame. They literally just fling everything up in the air and see where it scatters.

There is just so much history with Star Trek and the next generation cast. I’m currently watching, remembering and kind of loving how a man who once lectured Spock and Kirk about Cowboy diplomacy and duty being considered the paragon of new Star Fleet is now the one being lectured by a hard nosed unimaginative captain about their crashing of ships and defying of star fleet edicts. Only took a lifetime for Picard to realize what Kirk knew in his 30′s. lol

I love the repore with Stewart and Frakes’. I love Beverly FINALLY being back in this universe. I love the implications of what Beverly having another son may mean. I’m invested in these characters because of the actors themselves and the history that is not uprooted and erased just because an actor throws a fit. TBH, in the Star Trek universe Voyager is probably closer to comparison to RD in how BTS drama could spoil a show. Which makes it interesting they pulled Jeri Ryan’s character into this universe, this cast would have been a far more welcoming one that the one she initially came to fame on.

And so maybe currently enjoying TWO casts, Bridgerton and TNG, that seem to be on fairly good terms make RD in less tolerable. I simply don’t care about KJ, Lili or Camilla’s whining or ambitions. I find it short sighted and shallow. Acting can be hard work It’s not say...construction work but you do delve into emotions and end of the day that can produce a different level of fatigue. I get it. But it’s still supposed to be fun. You are getting paid to play make believe. they are whining about getting to play dress up each day and do what they did at 6 year’s old. They are somehow completely unaware of how that sounds to people who don’t have that job. There were a handful of people at my work told they had cancer this week. My job isn’t make believe. It’s why I like escapist entertainment. So I have a hard time understanding why I should be engrossed in KJ’s tale of over indulgence and privilege and how he didn’t appreciate it enough while at same time still wanting to shout how he wants more opportunity. You were given an opportunity, abused it, were unprofessional and now that the gravy train ends want someone to stick out their neck for you again? Ok KJ. Good luck with that.

Ambitions are fine, goals are fine. Nothing inherently evil in having them but the one young cast member who WAS professional and appreciated he is in a privileged position they have endlessly mocked for it over the year’s. So really...I could care less about their belated scrambling attempts to run to the media to rehab their professional reputations to appear employable now. 

The entertainment business is a hard one to maintain a career in. IMO the ones who appreciate their positions are the ones who deserve to still be employed 30 year’s later as the TNG now is. Or deserve break out cameos and roles in new films as Bridgerton cast is being offered. I really don’t think most of the RD cast deserves any further opportunities given the only awakening they seem to have is the paychecks are soon to end. I’ve yet to see them truly realize how terribly they have responded to fame beyond an oligatory soundbite for the masses.
