It’s the gaaaaang (again)

The sillies get a redraw. Ft: me struggling to draw Van Helsing but I think it came out pretty decent. Also know that my Van Helsing is officially a short king so plot twist, he’s secretly standing on a stool. (Anything for his five adult adopted children)
Anyway I actually had a blast redrawing this because despite the seemingly-perpetual-illness we stay winning, also that specific drawing has always been one of my favourites I’ve ever done, not necessarily because it’s good but just emotional value. I fully have it printed and stuck at the back of my copy of the book lmao, and I might have to replace it with the new one. Anyway they are all so dear to me and I’m smooching them all individually.

Getting caught up on Re: Dracula and oh Lucy's voice actor is so good I'm in pain already. Listening to her gush about Arthur and Seward to Mina is devastating.
(And wow, her whole description about how professional and put together Seward is sure hits different the second time around! Honey, that man is clinging to sanity by his fingernails, he is a garbage fire with nice hair)

we're all excited about the shovel, im excited about the shovel, but there was something else i wanted to highlight this ep.
At last I felt that subtle change in the air, and knew that the morning had come. Then came the welcome cock-crow, and I felt that I was safe.
jonathan feels the dawn. he actually feels the moment night changes into day. this coupled with the fact the Count was looking pretty rejuvenated (and some other clues people have pointed out in their own posts), and we can clearly guess what happened the night of the 29th.
the interesting thing is that though he can feel the day change, he is not in any trance (unlike SPOILERS), so in my opinion he has been merely fed on and not turned, which would probably be the task of the brides for the night of the 30th, to feed on jonathan and perhaps even turn him (or perhaps not, they unlike the count seemed intent to just eat him).
it's interesting to consider though that, since we don't know for how long blood keeps the count "fresh" (is it days? weeks? a month or even months? how much blood to power ratio are we talking here), it's actually hard to determine if jonathan has been fed on before. there's arguments for and against that interpretation, but since he has spent much of his time silent, and has no way to look at himself to see neck bite marks, i don't think it's possible to know.

Dracula Daily folks, I need aid!
I was reading through the 8th of May to the 16th of May entry, and I noticed something that I don't think anyone has mentioned before.
In the 8th of May entry, Jonathan is shaving, when he is startled by Dracula, and subsequently cuts himself, drawing blood. Dracula draws nearer, and makes a "grab" at Jonathan's throat. However, his hand "touched the string of beads which held the crucifix", and he pulls away. It is clear that the religious item, which Jonathan was given, and it is assumed he wore throughout his time in the castle, as he notes, after Dracula's attack, "it is a comfort and a strength to me whenever I touch it". The only time he mentions he takes it off is when he places the crucifix "over the head of [his] bed" to sleep. It's obviously a valued possession of Jonathan's, not just for the protection it offers, but also one of the last mementos he has of the outside world and human kindness, of "conveying memories of sympathy and comfort", so it's hard to imagine that he would ever take it off, both in the castle, and after he escapes. Knowing Dracula is repelled by it, Jonathan would most certainty wear it while he is exploring the castle, such as on May 15th, knowing it would protect him. But it didn't. On May 15th, Jonathan falls asleep in a room forbidden to him by the Count, and later that night, he is attacked by three female vampires, one of whom bends over him, as if to kiss him, who's "white sharp teeth" and "scarlet lips" fasten on his throat. They are only driven away by Dracula at the last minute. But where is Jonathan's crucifix? You know, the one he's been wearing ever since he entered the castle, ever since it protected him from Dracula. Was he even wearing it? And if he was wearing it, then why, if it worked on Dracula, a vampire, wouldn't it work on the other vampires, specifically these three vampires, as Lucy is also shown to be repelled by Van Helsing's crucifix when she is turned.
Was Jonathan wearing the crucifix, or was the female vampire unaffected by it? If it was the former, then apart from some unsatisfactory characterization on Stokers part, everything would be fine. However, if we assume that he was wearing it, and it didn't prevent the attack, something much more interesting becomes apparent.
See, throughout the novel, Dracula is seemingly unstoppable, only hindered by his aversion some items. He is seen as an unstoppable force that is spreading into the respectable society of England, infecting young women with desires and voluptuous cruelty. He is the big bad villain that the novel takes it's name from, but his eventual death? It takes up barely a line. And it isn't a stake to the heart, or strangulation via crucifix, or an overdose on garlic that kills him, it's two men with knives. Nothing special at all. In contrast however, it the female vampires deaths, especially Lucy's, that hold the most significance, that symbolize the major conflicts of the novel. One could almost come to the conclusion that, while Dracula is powerful, he is constrained by the illusion of humanity, however, the animistic figures of the three vampire women have only the illusion of humanity, and are only constrained by the patriarchal social hierarchy, as illustrated by Dracula's dominance over them all.
Anyway, I'd be really happy to hear all your ideas! Let me know if i've missed anything, or you also have thoughts on Stoker's unused Chekhov's crucifix!!

listening to re:dracula after having participated in dracula daily last year and these last updates are just really dirving home how heartbreaking it is. everyone loves each other and so they try to protect each other and in doing so they hide crucial information!
-Lucy's mother hides her heart condition (terminal) to Lucy
-Lucy hides her sickness from her mom so as to not worry her
-The things they're hiding directly cause both their deaths! Her mom doesn't know the garlic is a treatment so she shoves it out the window, contributing to the hundred factors that fuck up Lucy's treatment, and her heart condition is what causes her to die at the shock of a wolf being chucked into Lucy's room!
-Later, the guys will hide the crucial vampire info TM which will result in Mina not recognizing the signs of "being preyed upon by vampire" on herself
the only one excused is Van Helsing because even when he does talk about vampires it's not like he's believed, only after seeing Lucy (who is dead at this point) wandering the graveyard and eating a child they go ah. well. ok. maybe you have a point there.
and it's also interesting how it's precisely when they see through the deception that drives home just how much two characters love each other. when Dracula forces Jonathan to write a letter to Mina saying "coming back in a week" she goes sick with worry because her fiancé does not write like that. when John "Jack" Seward writes to Arthur saying "nothing much to report abt our examination" Arthur catches a fucking train to the city and goes "yeah you worried me".
anyway if Aziraphale and Crowley had read Dracula good omens season 2 would not have ended like that

what i didn't expect from my second round of dracula daily is how quickly i would miss the entries in the gaps. the first time around i didn't mind the breaks between updates until we got to droughtula (aka the week long break at the climax of the story), but this time around even one day passes without an update and i'm gnawing on every tumblr post i can find like "sir i need my emotional support solicitor"
i don't know whether this is partly the added effect provided by #re:dracula or whether these early scenes are just so much more significant to me because i know now where this is all going, but i've been consuming every update the moment it lands on my phone and i'm so excited to see this through to the end

[Big ol’ Dracula spoilers]
No because I absolutely love how the plot of Dracula is basically just “vampire decides to prey on the wrong random woman who passes by and suddenly he’s got an entire army on his ass including the solicitor he fucked with that one time who happened to be the husband of her best friend, and now all of them are just going to stop at nothing to hunt him down and put a stake through him and his three rapey wives all because he didn’t know that random sleepwalking woman happened to be THEIR Lucy Westenra, thank you very much”
And then Jonathan gets introduced to the gang and everyone’s just like “this guy too. We love this guy too now. Your vampiric ass is getting staked.”

This is my third (fourth? possibly?) readthrough of Dracula and I’m just NOW realizing that during the Shovel Incident, the fresh blood on Dracula’s lips is Jonathan’s. The reason why he looks healthier and more alive is because he drank for Jonathan the night before.
I always thought that he had drank from one of his coffin moving crew, or maybe even someone from the village. But no-
Jonathan probably spent the night on his knees, weeping and praying, but the moment he fell asleep, the Count struck.
“Tonight is mine. Tomorrow is yours.”
eeedkafdsj my skin is crawling.
