Visions write-up 2.0 ft. Neuvillette.

What's a Genshin? What are visions? How are they connected to the archons? And what has changed after Fontaine Archon Quest?

Now with dendro and up to 4.3! (Spoilers ahead)

A Genshin, translated as “allogene” in the English version, is a being that has been granted access to the special energy that flows across the world of Teyvat. Said energy allows control over the nature of the world and its rule-bending capabilities are deemed a danger by the gods of the world. Celestia, the city of gods floating in the sky, is in charge of dividing the elemental energy in seven different types and create allogenes that access to only one of the seven kinds of elemental energy.

The first energy we find during our adventure is Anemo, which allows us to control the air and form wind currents, and soon enough we meet more characters with Pyro, Cryo and Electro visions, promptly followed by Hydro and Geo, and lastly (after two years of wait for first day players), Dendro. After some time traveling through Teyvat and meeting more and more characters, some players have noticed that the vision wielders share more traits than just the elements and the fact that they use weapons.

By meeting new characters, knowing their personalities, and investing time on reading their stories, it becomes easy to see that each element favors certain background and intentions:

Anemo: This wind controlling element allows favors those who value change, either for themselves or their loved ones. Anemo users have had a big loss in their lives, and their laidback behavior helps them to deal with those feelings.

Geo: The energy that rules over minerals has a preference for inertia. As such, Geo visions are given to people that are already doing an exceptional job. By doing what they’re doing, their path to greatness is set.

Electro: The power to control electricity is bestowed to the exceptional ones. It might be comfortable to live like everybody else, but Electro characters have ditched their respective groups in order to achieve what they really want.

Dendro: Dendro energy flows in every living on the world, and so, their visions are granted to those who want to protect them. Either one or many, own or the other’s, or just a certain style of life, every bit of appreciation counts.

Hydro: To gain control over waters one must follow their destiny, Hydro visions are given to people that inherit a duty and must follow it like a river follows its channel, even if it means to keep a secret.

Pyro: Whatever it is the thing you value the most, you must choose It over everything else, no matter the backlash you might suffer. Honesty and passion are the principles that one must follow whenever in order to control fire in Teyvat.

Cryo: This elemental energy has a preference for those who go against their destiny and win. Sometimes tied to betrayal and clashing with your family, to control ice one must be resolute.

On top of the allogenes, each elemental energy has a god ruling over them. Known as Archons, these gods oversee their respective element and nation imprinting their ideals on their people. This made some believe that the archons where in charge of assigning visions, until a line of dialogue from Raiden Shogun said otherwise.

Well, what I can say on this topic is subject to certain constraints, but... it is not by my will that Visions are granted or denied. The key is people's desire, and... well, there's another side to it too.

However, there are still traces of a connection. The similarities between vision holders of the same element are shared with their respective archon and that can’t be ignored: Either losing someone, choosing your duty, secluding yourself from your kin, self-sacrifice, or hiding secrets; every archon provides details in their lore that overlap with the allogenes’s pasts. And so, it is possible that Celestia uses the archons as a guideline when selecting vision holders.

These guidelines have not changed for Anemo and Geo, Venti and Zhongli keep their role as archons since thousands of years before the beginning of our adventure. The following archons, up to Fontaine, have changed since the cataclysm that ended Khaenri’ah, and it’s possible that the selection criteria had changed with them. Electro Visions focus on isolation reflects Raiden Shogun, Dendro Visions before Nahida might have had a preference on knowledge seekers and Hydro Visions followed Furina’s acceptance of her role.

And recently, Hydro Visions changed.

By the end of Fontaine’s Archon Quest, the seat of Focalors is empty, and it will possibly remain empty for the rest of our adventure. While case reminds us of Venti and Zhongli’s, two archons that left their throne in order for humanity to decide their own fate, the Hydro Archon is dead, which implies that Celestia will stop having a model to assign Hydro Visions unlike Geo and Anemo. And still, Furina got one.

The answer to this lies in Neuvillete, specifically in his Vision related character story. Which tells us about how the Primordial One and the one who came after him created the current system that assign visions in order to keep the elemental energy of the world under control. Said system takes the elemental energy from the archons and, now the Hydro Archon doesn’t exist, Neuvillete, to then assign it at the chosen ones.

Not only this explains how Furina got a vision, but also why hers has 4 claw like marks unlike the other Fontaine characters. It’s unknown if this claw visions are related to hydro visions or Fontaine Visions from now on, but in the meantime, it gives Furina more distinction in the cast.

What we do know, is that the selection criteria for Hydro characters haven’t changed. By choosing to study humans and accepting the role of Iudex from Focalors, Neuvillete’s story in these five hundred years mimics Furina’s enough to keep the Hydro Vision stereotype unchanged, and answers why Furina got her vision at the moment we saw her get it.

A lot of things have passed in our adventure, and the more people we meet, the more ambitions and stories we know. The lore surrounding visions will change bit by bit, but in the meantime, the end of 4.3 is a nice point to stop and review.

Analyzing Invention: Some Data for the Inventor's Fair 2023

As a way of introduction, the Inventor's Fair is a Magic: the Gathering card design contest blog here on Tumblr. Each week, a contest is announced and members of the community submit designs throughout the week meeting the design specifications. At the end of the week, a few winners and runner-ups are selected, with commentary given by a series of judges. It's a fun exercise in creativity, one that I have participated since November 2022.

This past week, I decided to go back and compile some data about the blog, from January 1st, 2023 to Dec 2nd, 2023. I got some general data and then did a dive into data on the winners and runners-up. I would have loved to look at data for all of the entrants (on average, 23 each contest), but that was just a little too much for the time I have.

To start, let's look at that general data:

To start off, there have been 48 contests thus far during the year, with 4 more potentially planned (yes, Dec 31st would be the posting date for one of the contests, so it is technically a 2023 contest).

In the above graph, I included a 3-week rolling average as a trendline: basically the average shown for a week is the average of that week with the two weeks preceding).

The highest participation happened from February to mid-May, which corresponds to the Spring Semester in the US school system (my area of experience).

The contest with the greatest number of entrants: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work, which started on April 16 and had 36 entrants.

The contest with the lowest number of entrants: Re:Vision, which was the most recent contest and had only 8 entrants.

Now let's dive into some of the stats around the winners and runners-up:

There have been 50 unique entrants who have been either a winner or a runner-up so far this year. Many entrants have been part of the contests since the beginning of the year. The most recent entrant to have their first win/runner-up was @aethernalstars, in the Nov 12th contest Lost Caverns of Ixalan's Lost Vault.

The entrants with the highest numbers of wins/runners-up so far:

@spooky-bard: 22 total, with 16 wins

@izzet-always-r-versus-u: 16 total, with 10 wins

@nine-effing-hells: 15 total, with 7 wins

@hypexion: 14 total, with 5 wins

(tie) @deg99 and @bread-into-toast: 13 total, with 8 and 7 wins

Congrats to these entrants for some spectacular submissions!

So what makes a winning entry? Mostly the awesome creativity of the entrants, but here are some stats about the cards themselves that I found interesting.

By far the most popular card type was creature (and this includes Artifact Creature and Enchantment Creature submissions). Granted, there were several contests asking for creatures, like Rebels and Dragons. But it is such an overwhelming favorite that I just had to call it out.

As a note on other, I lumped things like planes and phenomenon into a single group, just to keep things simple (since there weren't that many)

Here, there has not been any contests for making cards in a specific color. However, red is a clear favorite among entrants. This is a mix of mono-red and multi-color including red cards. Black, white and blue are all closely tied for the 2nd most popular card, with green being fifth amongst the colors. I included colorless, but that being a low count is to be expected as I looked at color identity instead of cost, so many land submissions were pulled into one of the color categories.

Here, we see that the most common mana value of cards was 3 - 84 cards total! 4 (with 60) and 2 (with 41) came in 2nd and 3rd.

Entrants seem to really like submitting Rares (114 total) and Uncommons (92 total), as they made up almost 75% of all entries. The number for commons will get a small bump from a recent contest that is currently being judged: One for the Money, but nowhere near enough to dethrone the other two.

SO, if you were to submit a card, it seems like the best chance for a winning submission is a red/partially red creature that is rare/uncommon and has a mana value of 3/4. Looks like a Santa Clause card is up for the next few weeks ;)

Re:Vision

This January will be the sixth anniversary of the Inventor's Fair.

My first contest (as judge) wasn't until April, but that's still a lot longer than I thought this could ever have lasted. In that time, I've made a lot of fixes, tweaks, errors, revisions, and had a whole year or so where I was the solo judge for the however-many entries that crossed our threshold.

A good number of you all have also been here for a while! For our veterans, I'm curious where your first entry was, and hey, we'd love to hear about it in the Discord. What that means, presumably, is that you've had a lot of judgement. A lot of questions asked of your cards. And a whole lotta time in Magic design philosophy—or, maybe this is your first contest. In which case, hi! Let's one and all go back through the archive...

> For veterans: Take a card that from a contest at least one year ago (that was not a winner/runner) and make a new card based on the commentary and suggestions.

> For new inventors: Look way back at an old contest, pick a submission, and respond to a submission (that was not a winner/runner) with a different card that speaks to the judge's feedback.

M.E.O.W.—

Mandatory: The card has to be yours if you've got it, or someone else's if you don't, and it has to be a DIFFERENT card. Forget the name of this contest—you're not revising the card itself so much as you're revising your techniques based on acquired knowledge. However, you are, generally, responding to the same contest to which it was originally submitted. Please note which contest and what was changed.

[Ed: For clarification, you could call it a significant revision or overhaul, if that helps. Nuance matters. It would be best to pick a card with a number of issues, perhaps, or with a specific combination of qualities that could've used revision.]

Encouraged: Feel free to update wording, mechanics, and worlds with contemporary MTG design choices! There have been several changes since the Fair started and many more to come. Take some time and think about the specifics of what're being asked. The more you feel iffy about the original card, the better.

Optional: These are pretty cut-and-dry, but I'm curious if the commentary can be, like, challenged? As I'm sitting here, I'm wondering just how critically deep this contest can go. I think I'd like to read about folks' processes as they work. More info will usually be more helpful!

Warning: You're keeping very little about your original card; this isn't just a "fix this one word you misspelled" or "up the cost and rarity appropriately." The card must a) have needed some significant changes and b) be changed significantly enough to show growth. ADDITIONALLY: We are speaking as artists/artisans, to other artists and artisans; this is a place of respect and inquiry.

When we get to the commentary, if you're a new inventor I'll be looking at your original approaches, and if you're a veteran I might be a little nostalgic. Remains to be seen! But I can't wait to see them all. Again.

NB: Winners and runners for the previous contests were so tasty that the gremlins grabbed them and scurried into the cracks. We're getting the traps set up as we speak.

I also rewatched Re:Vision, and oh gosh, it made me SO FUCKING EMOTIONAL, I can't-- I think I should've been watching Re:Vision every time I watched 00 anime and movie, but for some reason, as of now, I've watched Re:Vision only two times. I regret my life choices on this, ahaha. And now I'm a bit sad that I won't be able to discuss it in details with anyone. If I were more confident in my listening comprehension I'd translate the whole thing. One day I will translate the whole thing just so I can make everyone watch it, haha.

bit late with this one but i wanted to finish laundry first so here we go.. notes on this bitch

right off the bat, yes! i did rotoscoping!

what! after avoiding it since 2017!! shoutout to jennifer @antoniosvivaldi for inspiring me to do that, btw. you should absolutely check out her stuff if you haven't already--her style is so unique and refreshing!

for the most part, i think they turned out swell--after effects behaved itself for once, which like, thank fuck, because i was on a call with fio @maranello and others at 1 in the morning like "haha! i totally know what i'm doing!" narrator voice they did NOT know what they were doing, they were making educated guesses based on past horrible experiences (hence avoiding rotoscoping for years 💀).

but this is meant to be educational lol so! what is rotoscoping? simply put, it's a tracing technique. it has its roots way back in animation when tech was starting to pick up in like the 1920s and artists wanted a more efficient way of animating. rotoscoping is one of those tools that've been used differently from how it was originally intended, which is actually? so cool from like, a media arts study perspective?? because it's commonplace to use it for live-action film and vfx work as a way to mask scenes out and isolate them in addition to its original use of mapping things to isolated scenes. i won't bore you with the stuart hall encoding/decoding stuff, but just know that i find the development of digital art circa adobe dominance fascinating. i am using this century-old animation technique to impose my blorbo upon the eyes of thousands.

ANYWAY. i really liked this particular mask--it has a lot of movement but still manages to flow nicely?

next up: the lightsaber

goodness. where do i start. well first of all i had a vision of something much more 2d when it comes to lightsaber anatomy, lol. but i extended my subscription for maxon and figured--why not take full advantage of this while i've still got it? so i got this 3d model of luke's lightsaber. it's untextured and unrigged and clunky but thankfully it had most of the inner parts so as far as i'm concerned i struck GOLD.

idk what i can really say in terms of like What Is 3d Modelling, because i think people have an understanding of that. so we'll go instead thru my process!

i added materials and added a null object (does that count as rigging? for something as straightforward as this?) to do a simple rotation animation on the first day...

and then i had an idea before bed to separate the parts like that one scene in the clone wars where they show how a lightsaber is assembled, except i haven't watched the scene so god knows how they animated it NKJFGNDFKJGDF. anyway the day after, this was kinda where i got:

keyframing on c4d is a Bitch because u can't just Access The Graph Editor you have to go through the dope sheet and change ur views and it's just. annoying!! coming from an after effects standpoint! but i can see how it's optimized for Actual Animation work so ughgh. we deal. onwards..

asked the team over at usergif and natalie @kenobiis suggested putting in a kyber crystal to fill out the middle. i ended up taking the og "laser" cylinder and modifying/animating it because uh THIS is the real inside of a lightsaber and i am not putting all that into a 3 second gif LMAO. but yeah i fine-tuned the animation and plopped it in after effects, then fiddled with video copilot's saber to make luke's blade.

u might notice the motion blur--that's re:vision's RSMB! i also added a little bit of depth of field with frischluft, but it doesn't show up well in gif form. speaking of things that don't render well:

there is A FUCK TON of aliasing going on. i couldn't make any anti-aliasing settings work for some reason so i ended up trying to smooth it out in ae.. to probably not a lot of effect. i got the very edges around it smoothed out with the classic gaussian blur and a matte choker method, but the black rings are killer. ugh. it's whatever, i figure i'll work something better out for the next time.

everything else is fairly basic and intuitive i think? obviously used shape layers + alpha mattes, my beloved. i fucked up a little on the text because i think i made my offset keyframes backwards somewhere in the middle of the process but at that point i was too lazy to go back in and fix it. oops!

re:vision summary backup

the site that had the re:vision summary is gone. i backed up the text in the event this might happen, and am reposting it unedited for archival purposes.

Chapter 1: Meaning of life

Happens when Setsuna and Tieria enter the ELS planetoid.

Starting dialogue, ELS just like everyone wants to live.

Setsuna than go on with his story, how he got to being a child soldier, going down with all the killing till the appearance of the Gundam saved him. But he became dead inside, he hates how people can be so bad, how people are manupilated etc. He went on his own interventions until CB scouted him. Now he strives to be the Gundam that saved him, now he saves others.

Back to now, Setsuna resolves to go to the ELS home planet.

He has found his meaning in life.

Chapter 2: Even so the embers burn

So humanity is saved, everyone got lots to do to recover after all the ruckus.

CB as well...

Like policing after the Federation lost lots of their forces.

Lockon was grumbling about having him and Allelujah left but Sumeragi is thinking of getting new Meisters.

Gundams-wise Ian is preparing the Exia R4 and Dynames R3.

The 2 (plus Marie) have to hang on for the time being.

Then an emergency encrypted comms from Sumeragi in the colonies.

A mission plan of sorts.

Humorous (?), some pro-human organization? (Like ostracize the ELS or something? I couldn't decipher well)

The 2 talk about how theres is 2 sides in the world, one that accepts and one that rejects.

The Humorous members are preparing arms to kill humans that has assimilated with ELS.

The 2 are to perform armed intervention there.

Lockon monologue. He seems to think of humanity as a baby. CB, Gundam, GN Drives are all to nurture and lead this baby on path. Was that Neil? Now we have Lyle. Lyle talks about his brother, their relationship, history etc. He doesn't blame him, he will strive to carry on his brother's ideals.

Back to now, the 2 set out on the mision.

Chapter 3: [Setsuna something.. can't understand those kanji]

Saji sends a mail to the address Setsuna gave him...

Saji is now helping in the works to fix the Orbital Elevator.

The works paid off as the solar array system is fixed, lessening the Earth's energy woes.

Being able to being smiles to people gave Saji's life meaning.

Louise started living with him one month ago.

She is at some clinic specializing in ELS, she did not assimilate with ELS though.

He wishes Louise's health and the Earth's situation will recover gradually.

Saji receives a mail from an unknown source.

"Someone will visit you soon"

"What is this a prank?"

Just then his doorbell rang.

Its Allelujah.

The unknown address is to keep Saji distanced from CB.

The Humorous are targeting the ELS specialized clinic and the members had mixed into the elevator repair workers. CB wants Saji to help. Sumeragi hopes to settle without armed battles. Humorous is still a civil organization and they don't want it to spread further. They are targeting ELS assimilated humans now but who knows they might target the Innovators later too. The CB seeks to keep them at bay.

Saji agrees to help.

He asks about Setsuna.

Allelujah tells Saji that Setsuna is on a long journey.

Looks like Saji help seed out the 7 Humorous members.

Allelujah heads off to the designated point.

Allelujah and Hallelujah dialogue.

Hallelujah thinks that the ELS clinic is like the human experimentation stuff they went through.

The 2 personalities rattle on but Allelujah calmly hold his stand.

Allelujah accepts Hallelujah.

Allelujah heads off to the designated point.

Chapter 4: Tieria type

Aeolia had thought about humanity, how frail they are, susceptible to various activities and calamities.

[Lots of big stuff I can't decipher...Tieria thinks on Aeolia's ideals and philosophy.]

He seeks to trigger human evolution, better skills, better communication and understanding.

Aeolia then created the Innovades in his ideals of his ideal evolved human, Innovators.

Tieria is one such Innovade created to help usher the humans to evolution, a 0988 type.

Tieria analyze the growth of Setsuna, how Neil's words affected them.

Tieria is going to the ELS home world with Setsuna but this is not an eternal goodbye as he is an Innovade who chose to walk alongside mankind.

[Lockon grumbling about the mission]

Seems like they managed to take out part of the Humorous guys.

Someone calls out to Lockon.

"Tieria!?"

The person says it may be a long time before Tieria returns.

"Not Tieria... then a Tieria type Innovade.."

"A Tieria type Innovade is accurate interpretation. But not Tieria is inaccurate."

"What are you going at?"

"Tieria's memories is in my head."

"A memory copy!?"

"It seems that Tieria Erde is rather worried."

The person names himself as Laetitia. He says though he has Tieria's memories he is different and himself.

Laetitia approached Lockon to discuss Humorous mission details.

Humorous' base is at a colony at lagrange 2 at the other side of the Moon.

Lockon says that place has some significance, and that Humorous are operating on revenge.

[some place destroyed by ELS attack or something I can't decipher.]

Lockon comments on how immature humans are.

Laetitia replies that the Tieira in him envies the immaturity of mankind.

Lockon is suprised.

[Seems like Tieria activated Laetitia out of worry and Laetitia was snooping around and eventually found Lockon. As he gives Lockon the dips on Humorous...]

"Thanks for the info. I'm supposed to go to space to join my comrades. What will you do? Wanna come along?"

Lockon ask Laetitia if he wants to come along.

Laetitia agrees. Tieria wishes so, he wishes so.

No Gundam pilot experience but he has Tieria's memories.

"Alright! So it is! Laetitia Erde, you are now a Gundam Meister of Celestial Being!"

Chapter 5: The 2 sides of the particle

Setsuna and Tieria ready for the quantum teleport but Setsuna heard something...

Setsuna is certain and ask Tieria for some time.

He needed to go.

[Graham muses about his state I think, can't decipher]

Graham seems to be having an out of body experience, lol

As he describes being free and flying around being one with nature etc.

Talking about his life, military, flying on a MS etc.

About how flying in the sky in a MS frees him from the shackles of day to day life.

Recalls his life as he climb the ranks.

Getting his team and claiming the skies with the Flag.

"These skies is mine!!"

"But a few years after HE appeared..."

The details and feelings of him falling in love with the Gundam.

Love slowly turns to hate as he see how the world became after their appearance.

He resolves to defeat the Gundams by all means.

He threw away everything don a mask and go after the Gundams like a maniac.

He was putting his life on the line but felt betrayed by Setsuna.

Though now he is on the route to death having opened a path for Setsuna.

"Its too soon to have that thought."

"What?"

Setsuna appeared before Graham.

Looks like Graham is still alive due to being in the Quantum Burst area.

Within the Quantum Burst the ELS understood Graham and wishes to live with him.

Setsuna assures Graham that he is truly alive.

Looks like Setsuna heard Graham's grandiose poetry of his life as well, the quantum effect thingy.

"I have a future!"

Graham is Graham and not, reborn a being of human and ELS.

Setsuna entrusts his wishes to Graham.

Everything is understood within quantum.

Graham wishes Setsuna well for his long journey.

"Farewell young man..."

"I'll return, when... I'm not sure.."

Chapter 6: Celestial Being reborned

Saji: A direct comms from Allelujah? Yes. Hello?

Allelujah: Saji Crossroad.

Saji: It is ok for us to talk directly?

Allelujah: Its through VEDA so no worries about eavesdropping.

Allelujah thanks Saji for his list and tells him they have suppressed the Humorous main base at Lagrange 2.

But with the unstable situation, activities like Humorous will likely arise again.

Allelujah wants Saji to inform them when it happens.

Saji accepts this informant role and the 2 bid farewell.

Lockon declares mission complete for the Humorous matter.

He mention that the follow up is left to Federation minister Claus to handle.

Allelujah say its ok for CB to just stay in the shadows as a deterrence, a caution.

The MVP this time is Laetitia, who seems to be out scouting for Meisters.

Looks like Laetitia's Dynames has returned.

Lockon expresses a tinge of excitement.

Allelujah is curious.

Just who will be the new guy?

Laetitia announce his return.

Lockon demands the new guy.

Graham introduce himself to the disbelieve of Lockon and Allelujah.

Allelujah ask Laetitia is it ok.

Laetitia says its approved by VEDA and Ms Sumeragi....and Setsuna.

Graham asks Laetitia where is his Gundam, he is eager to touch it.

Laetitia shows him to Exia R4.

Graham recognizes it as first Gundam he met Setsuna, a revised version.

Graham: That boy, he really want to entrust everything to me.

Allelujah: Isn't it just a coincidence?

Laetitia: Its official name is Gundam Exia Repair IV.

Graham: Now it is called "Graham Gundam"!

Allelujah: Naming it as he likes...

Just then an emergency encrypted comms arrived.

A military coup d'etat.

An armed intervention is called for.

Lockon: Allelujah, Laetitia. Sortie in the Gundams.

Graham: Let me come with you.

Lockon: But you just joined!

Allelujah: That will be reckless!

Graham: No worries! I have received lectures on the Gundam from Setsuna.

Allelujah: Setsuna's lectures!?

Lockon: Oei.. Thats pushing it. You surely won't know how to regulate Trans-Arm usage!

Graham: I definitely dislike that. I am a guy who is bad at holding back himself.

Lockon: That why you have to control..

Graham: LET"S GO! FLAG FIGHTERS!

Allelujah: Ah..going as he likes again..our name too..

Graham: Whats with the squabbling, hurry up!

Laetitia: Understood.

Allelujah: Laetitia...even you...

Lockon: HAHAHAA!!!

Allelujah: Lockon...?

Lockon: That Setsuna really left us some parting gift. Lets go Allelujah, the debut of the new Celestial Being, the new Gundam Meisters!

Allelujah: While Setsuna and Tieria are away..

Lockon: We will take care of the world.

Allelujah: Lets go!

Lockon: Alright!

Allelujah: Gundam Haruto. Allelujah Haptism, flight out!

Lockon: Gundam Zabanya. Lockon Stratos, rolling out!

Laetitia: Gundam Dynames Repair III. Laetitia Erde, sortie out!

Graham: Graham Gundam. Graham Aker, eradicating all evil of the world!

Chapter Extra: After the credits

Neil: Dark, so dark. I can't see anything.

Neil: Heheh.. I thought we could meet if I came here.

Neil: Looks like I'm wrong.

Neil: Is this my retribution...

Neil: Picking a fight with the world, massive killings. Paving the way for a world for Lyle to live in.
