[READING] Reading Scholarly Sources

“Even though it may seem like a solitary, isolated activity, when you read a scholarly work, you are participating in a conversation. ... Your job... is to locate the writer and yourself in this larger conversation. Reading academic texts is a deeply social activity; talking with your professors and peers about texts can not only help you understand your readings better, but it can push your thinking and clarify your own stances on issues that really matter to you.”

“Rhetorical reading refers to a set of practices designed to help us understand how texts work and to engage more deeply and fully in a conversation that extends beyond the boundaries of any particular reading. Rhetorical reading practices ask us to think deliberately about the role and relationship between the writer, reader, and text. When thinking about the writer, we are particularly interested in clues about the writer’s motivation and agenda. If we know something about what the writer cares about and is trying to accomplish, it can help orient us to the reading and understand some of the choices the writer makes in his or her work. As readers, our role is quite active. We pay attention to our own motivation and agenda for each reading. On one level, our motivation may be as simple as wanting to do well in a class, and our agenda may involve wanting to understand as much as necessary in order to complete our assignments. In order to meet these goals, we need to go deeper, asking, “Why is my professor asking me to read this piece?” You may find clues in your course syllabus, comments your professor makes in class, or comments from your classmates. If you aren’t sure why you are being asked to read something, ask! Most professors will be more than happy to discuss in general terms what “work” they want a reading to do—for example, to introduce you to a set of debates, to provide information on a specific topic, or to challenge conventional thinking on an issue.”

A lovely thing about picture books is that because they are written to be read by adults to children, they are not limited by things like genre, and can be a fun way to introduce kids to new styles of storytelling. For example, "Apples For Little Fox" (2017) by author-illustrator Ekaterina Trukhan is a wonderfully sweet little mystery story for even the youngest audience. Little ones can flex their inferencing skills by trying alongside the little fox to figure out what has become of the missing apples from his favourite orchard, with clear visual clues, and an ending sure to satisfy. 🍎🍏🍎 Over at @noodlenuts_classics I'm exploring inferencing this week with the Read With River Book Club and the hashtag #FindMeStoriesWith_inference. PROMPT TWO

This poster represents the reading strategies that can be used in the classroom in all year levels. The 'reading strategies' enables and guides students in their understanding of their chosen text when reading through guided reading or independent reading. This poster makes the connection between each stem of thinking and it helps the students think about their chosen book and understanding the book effectively. In my classroom, I will definitely implement this and guide each student in the reading to further develop their thinking skills and strategies. @ecl310deakin

Reading Response: Week 6

Reading takes a huge part of our everyday lives, believe it or not. And with reading, comes its own process. You can’t just sit there like a robot and read expecting that everything will stick to your head. In my opinion reading can be facilitated through your own personal reading process. Reading process can simply be breaking it into little pieces in order to get a better understanding and a background of what you can expect from the material. Everyone has their own reading process depending on how beneficial it works for them. My reading process would be quickly going through the reading material first. Whenever reading something, I like to go through the titles, subtitles, graphs, pictures, and captions in order to get a better understanding. Then, I like to annotate the reading. While I am reading I like to highlight, and make small notes next to the sides or another paper. This helps me as a reference to go back to, instead of reading everything twice I can just read my annotations and my highlighted text.

I, personally, love reading and I do find my reading process effective. This is because I find that when reading stuff twice over again, I get more annoyed and not think clearly. On the other hand, annotating helps me focus on the first time and annotate just to go back and read the important stuff. Although I find my reading process quite effective, sometimes I do encounter obstacles. I think my reading process can be improved if I do not procrastinate. Sometimes I start reading the material really late that I don’t have time to read it twice or focus really good the first time. 

Chapter four of this week’s reading mentions in-depth reading, or concentrating reading. I rhetorically read content for my RWS class using this type of reading. I like to do active reading since I like to really concentrate my first time, annotate, highlight, ask questions, and find important information to use. All of this is classified as in-depth reading. Another thing I use when reading content for my RWS class is discipline-specific reader questions. This is because on RWS we focus on our own disciplines most of the time, which prompts us to ask certain questions, different from other’s disciplines. 

The content from the video helped me with my reading strategies for the lit review assignment. The video helped me get a better understanding of what are the essentials for gathering information for my lit review. It was important to understand currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. All of these are extremely important and beneficial for any paper. For example, the paper has to be on a certain time lapse, which is were currency is about. Talking about relevance, you need to make sure the source is relevant to your argument. You don’t want to use a source that contradicts your inquiry. Authority is just making sure the author is someone experienced on that subject, or that the information comes from somewhere reliable. Accuracy, focuses on comparing your date to other data gathered, and if it is sufficient data. Lastly purpose, talks about the goal, what you are trying to accomplish. For example, it can be to persuade, to inform, to entertain or various more. Chapter 4 helps me as well in understanding reading strategies, like shallow and in-depth. It also helps me locate reading material like data collection, library and archives, internet, and research data bases.

Ahh so difficult...

I love the word ‘difficult’, cause it sounds complicated. Hahahaha.

Who would have thought that we could also face difficulties while reading?! I’ve always read for pleasure and when I do read, I don’t really think much. That is until I listened to the reading strategies and the schematic knowledge lectures! Suddenly I become very conscious about the text I’m reading... In a good way of course!

There are various reasons for reading difficulties. As for me, I usually face difficulties with vocabularies and syntax of a text. One time with the text structure. The other time I was not familiar with the genre. Ahh how to overcome all of these...

I think these difficulties can be solved using the reading strategies and don’t forget to make connections! It can be hard, but I believe they will work!

I hesitated about sharing this one... I'm a huge fan of vintage early readers, as many of you know, which always seem so much better than the current licenced junk. And in that regard, "Uncle Elephant" (1981) by beloved author/Illustrator Arnold Lobel, is a beautiful example. But the book starts off with the young elephant's parents being lost at sea, and it seemed like it might upset some little ones. I am happy to report, however, that there is a happy ending (of which you can reassure young readers), and between start and finish, plenty of sweet, gentle lessons about dealing with sadness and learning to cope with difficult situations. A British study announced today “1 of 5 families don’t have time to read to their kids.” Being a mom and business owner, I get it! There’s not enough time in a day to get everything done and fit it all in. This leave parents feeling stretched too thin, overwhelmed with guilt and feeling like we are failing. We do everything, but nothing really well. We get our work done, but not at our best. We spend time with our kids but not the true quality time they need and deserve. We don’t take care of ourselves because everyone else needs us. The list goes on and on. One thing I can tell you is reading is therapeutic for you and your kids. Take 5-10 minutes each night. It doesn’t have to be a long stretch of time. Something is better then nothing. Make it part of your schedule and commit to it. Before you kiss them goodnight, spend these 5-10 minutes reading books they enjoy. Stimulate conversations, time for snuggling and a way to develop their literacy skills and strengthen your parent- child bond. Make this reading time your time together. Fill up their attention buckets and rid yourself of some of that parent guilt. Commit constantly and be consistent! Small changes make BIG results!
