Photographer Xavier Concha took this portrait of her to place on the wall of the newly built Edinburg Regional Hospital where she sat as a Member of the Board of Directors. She was 49 years old. On Monday, I will be 49 years old. A couple of years ago, I didn’t think I was ready to come out from under her shadow of greatness. I didn’t think I could ever be at her level. Started from the bottom, now I am here!

So, first of all I would like to tell a little bit about how I got into the Danish Cancer Society (DCS) as a kind of an introduction.

I started of researching on the internet in Australia, mainly in Melbourne since I haven’t been there before and it is an English speaking country which was at first my main focus – to improve my English skills along with various health professional competencies (coaching,counselling etc.).

I fortunately quite early in the internship-finding phase found a place in Melbourne who accepted me, but at the same time there was a vacancy at DCS. I never thought about that place for the internship but why not try. Since it is a quite big/popular workplace in DK I never truly thought that I would get in considering how many applicants they most have constantly. Lucky for me, soon after I applied they wanted to have a job interview and they said that I could intern here if I wanted to. Due to my current awesome dorm living situation (as well as other practicalities) and my future career possibilities, I choose to stay in DK after all.

Tomorrow will be my first day at my internship place, and I am more than excited about getting started. I will be located at the department of “prevention and information” within alcohol and tobacco. As an intern here I have to be the connection between volunteers and the organisation. In other words I need to organize, coordinate and optimize the volunteers work. The volunteers are a big part of the work DCS’s prevention and information department is doing; they facilitate quit-smoking events, tobacco prevention education and free of alcohol morning party’s at youth educations.

Fyi - I’ll try to do a regular post every weekend about what have happened so far, what have I learned and my thoughts for the upcoming week.
