losing my entire mind at this hot take in an aggresisvely R+ Facebook trainer's post. comment section is full of people asking for sources and the poster claiming the "prey drive myth" has been debunked same as alpha theory. I can't comment because I'm not in the group but oh my god.

I've got to say, I've been doing a lot of research on Italy recently and I literally can't stop thinking about your boys. I'm over here trying to read about whatever Crusade and my brain is just a constant loop of "isn't Machete a cardinal? And Vasco was from like Verona, right?" Not super conducive to learning anything, but I am enjoying myself and thought you should know.
Thank you for your lovely art and for sharing your darlings <33
That's adorable ;^; But also sorry the lads keep distracting you, hah.
I'd argue that getting invested in your characters and their stories and having to do background research for them is actually a great way to accumulate knowledge about various subjects. Often it's stuff you probably would never get around to reading about otherwise. I'm not saying it's always information you'll have many practical uses for, but learning about new things is fun and it's beneficial to you and your brain in the long run.
Vasco is from Florence actually! It's usually considered to be the birthplace and the main hub of the entire Renaissance movement. Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Michelangelo lived and influenced there and Dante Alighieri (author of The Divine Comedy/Dante's Inferno) was florentine as well, albeit he lived several centuries prior to them.

Just had the cutest interaction while training Forte.
We were working on alternating between casual heeling/llw and fmp with him in harness around the block. We'd come full circle back to the driveway when I spotted a young kid on a bike coming up the road.
I put Forte in a down and planned to reward him as kid and dad passed by. But the kid saw Forte and stopped in front of us while repeatedly pointing out the doggy. (Kid was young, training wheels and dad's hand on the back of his seat.)
I could tell dad was getting uncomfortable because kid would not move on and was very fixated on Forte. So I looked at dad and explained that this dog is learning to be a service dog, which is a special dog who helps people. That this dog loves people but needs to be able to ignore them when he's working so he can focus on the handler. And if they had a few minutes, would they want to help me train him.
Dad relaxed and said yes. So I asked the kid if he could ride around real fast and call to the doggy. If the doggy stayed in his down I'd reward him with a tasty treat. Kid was pumped to do so. After a few minutes I thanked them both for helping me train my dog.
As the kid rode off I could hear him excitedly telling his dad "I helped train a service dog. They're really special dogs ". And dad agreed that he did and that he'd done a good job. Kid proceeded to say "I'm going to tell mom I helped train a service dog. Does she know they're special dogs?" To which dad said mom's going to be impressed because she knows those are special helper dogs and their training is really important.
It was such a wholesome interaction.

okay deeply unpopular opinion time. dogs. are gross. frankly it's unhinged that in our society it's normal to have an animal that for no reason runs around your house, gets hair on everything, smells bad, throws up on the floor, jumps on people, massively restricts the flexibility of your schedule, and goes to the bathroom in your yard which you then have to PICK UP with gloves and baggies. dogs are incredible animals that can be very smart and endearing but they need to have jobs, not just exist in your 500sq ft apartment to bark at and jump on your guests. "haha sorry he's just so excited to see people!!" no. he's just totally untrained and its not CUTE why do you think it's CUTE. *drops something while cooking* "haha its fine the dog will get it :)" susan. why is it ok that an animal is going to lick food of the ground. you know that doesn't make the floor clean, right. susan. SUSAN,

Seen the doggy cop thing, what about a like... The dog catcher has one of those big aggro herder dogs (basing this of something in the town I live in) and it's the stray catcher and the stray dog? It's like that one movie with the fox and the hound. Plot points...stray catchers dog corners the stray in an alley only to discover the stray has pups and so he doesn't alert the stray catcher to their location. And every day the stray catchers dog visits the stray with like scraps he gets given from the catcher. I don't know. I failed english writing. But imagine it.
you're all trying to pitch me a dog movie when we all know the dog movie is an extinct genre

Woke up to unpleasantly strong winds this morning so instead of going out for our usual Saturday morning jaunt, I decided to take Rory to do some "use of wind" training (description below the cut).
This was her first targeted use of wind training session and her second session on birds but it was so cool to see it click! I hid birds for her to find four times, varying the number of birds each time and letting her rest in the car between reps. Each time she searched with more strategy and confidence, it was extremely cool to watch!
I took her for a long line walk at a different park afterwards to cool down and she was still intentionally using the wind to explore, it was so cool how quickly it clicked for her. She's gonna be a force to be reckoned with!
You don't need much to set up Use Of Wind training, but make sure it's pretty consistently windy (not just gusty). Pick your target scent - this can be anything: meatballs, tennis ball, a person, dead birds, but make sure your dog knows to search for it - and find an open space that isn't bare ground. We went to a rather unpopulated park that is covered in dry grasses, like this:
Tumblr media
With your dog out of sight (e.g., in the car), hide your item(s) so they aren't visible but so the wind still blows over them, then wait a few minutes so the scent has time to disperse.
Walk your dog in the general area, switching directions often so sometimes you're walking into the wind, sometimes walking with the wind, and wait for the dog to pick up the scent. Encourage following the scent trail to the item and reward heavily!! This is most easily done off leash or on a long line, the longer the better.
Put the dog away and hide more items, wait a few minutes, then search again. After a few reps you should be able to let your dog search independently and you should notice your dog start using the wind strategically to find their target.
Now your dog can use the wind!
