alhaitham's breath hits your cheek with every rise and setting of his chest. he's fast asleep, arm wound tightly around your waist pulling you close to him—like this, you're unable to wriggle out of his grip. (not that you want to. not when it's one of the few times you're awake before he is.)
you lift a warm hand to his cheek, caress the soft skin there and lean forward to place a gentle kiss. he looks peaceful like this, your haithoomi. your hayi. it's different—how his face relaxes when he's asleep. it's not like your haitham is expressive but there is a difference. he is not concentrating right now, instead blissfully off to dreamland where he does not think; learn; or ruminate.
your thumb smooths over his left brow and gives him one last kiss on the cheek before waking him up. the birds have yet to begin their chirping and the streets have not started their bustling, but it is dawn.
"haitham," you call softly. when he does not rouse immediately, you cup his face and lean your head on his. "haithoomi."
then he wakes, lids fluttering and eyes bleary; his first sight you. in a voice deep with sleep, he says your name in turn.
"happy birthday."
his brows knit, then a hand is on your jaw; his thumb caresses the skin there. "...have you woken me up just to greet me?"
perhaps it's the way he's said it because you laugh.
your haitham says your name in a low tone, "we have all day later."
(right, oh, right. alhaitham's taken the day off to celebrate with you his first birthday since being with you.)
"i know," you say, voice warm. "but i wanted to get a headstart."
and your haitham breathes out a sigh. for moments there is silence. he continues to caress your jaw, bright green eyes boring into yours.
his staring is suffocating. it forces you to run your mouth, cheeky while saying, "i bet it's your first time being woken up to be greeted happy birthday, right?"
he makes a noncommittal noise; a hum. you chuckle, "i just want your firsts, hayi."
"do you now?" your comment brings him alive. your haithoomi looks awake.
"of course i do," you stress. your arms then wrap around him, pulling him close to your being. "every couple milestone should be celebrated."
your haitham moves forward and kisses your forehead. "there is plenty of time to celebrate it later," he says, "it's too early. go back to sleep, joonam."
so you do. (you don't miss that he's not refused you wanting his firsts. it keeps you awake and causes you to feign sleep.
luckily for you, you don't know alhaitham does the same. just a small shift in position will let you know his heart is beating rapidly in his chest, as a small smile curls his lips.
i just want your firsts, hayi, it plays round and round in his mind. even when the sunlight cascades into the bedroom from the windows, it never once leaves him.
alhaitham finds himself wanting the same.)

one line in trimax that's always stuck with me is from chapter 65, right after wolfwood's death. when vash is sticking the punisher by his grave and he says "it was part of his life". that phrasing is so interesting to me. the neutrality of it is one thing that gets me, i think. it was part of his life. for better or worse, whatever it was, the punisher was wolfwood's.
It's pretty easy to think that the punisher might represent violence, the eye of michael, the role of assassin that was forced onto wolfwood, the loss of childhood. but it's not really presented that way, not overtly anyways. we never see wolfwood shun the punisher, he's not conflicted by his use of it. he never considers abandoning it for some other weapon. it's his weapon. he doesn't discard it when he eventually decides to take a more vash-like approach and actually let people live. he pretty easily accepts it as his own, a tool he can use. (to be fair, at least part of that is probably because the punisher is a very good gun.)
the punisher can still represent the harsher aspects of wolfwood's character, the violence he's committed, that he's capable of. that's an important part of his life! and the idea of it as representative of his violent adolescence, childhood that was stripped away, goes along with this - it's literally a cross to bear. but besides showing his past as a burden, i think of the punisher as being a cross of responsibility. when you have a gun you have power, agency - you have a responsibility to make a choice. that's what wolfwood tells vash in chapter 4.
Tumblr media
the ability to take a life, the burden of it, is literally his cross to bear. that ability - and that responsibility - was given to him by the eom, literally in terms of the gun, and in terms of his skills. but the eye doesn't think twice about killing people. for them it's not really a choice, a responsibility, it's just a given. but wolfwood can't accept that. he's constantly considering the choices he makes.
so the punisher isn't only a symbol of the eye of michael, of the path that he was forced onto. it's also a way of expressing autonomy. the eye gave wolfwood the gun, but he decides how to use it and what it means. for much of the story wolfwood struggles to decide what to do, he's a very conflicted character. but eventually he resolves to use it against chapel, against knives, to help vash, and protect the orphanage. the gun gives him agency.
so the punisher was part of his life. it was the tool that he used to commit acts of violence, acts that he was forced into, but also the tool he used to break free.
Tumblr media
it's heavy for vash, too. he's not exempt from that idea, the idea of responsibility. as wolfwood said much earlier in the story, vash has always been able to sidestep the question of "what do i choose?", because he's only ever given himself one option - everybody lives. and he's always succeeded. but as wolfwood says, "the day will come when you'll have to choose". one day, it's not going to work.
and of course the story progresses, the stakes ramp up, and vash learns more, goes through more, and is pushed to his limits. i think by this point, by wolfwood's death, and maybe because of it, vash has realized that he might have to make that difficult choice in the near future. that's one reason why he wants to "do him proud". he has a lot of reasons to say this of course - to not let wolfwood's sacrifice go to waste, for example. but if we're thinking of the cross as responsibility, then vash is saying he doesn't want to forget the lessons he learned because of wolfwood. wolfwood has always grappled with responsibility, with what the right thing to do is. and the right thing is often not easy. vash hopes that when the times comes for him to make a choice, he'll make a good one, one that does right by wolfwood's memory.

the music in WOT is never random. even if it's just very soft background music, it's relevant to the scene. practically every time there's music playing while egwene is onscreen during s2, the tune is egwene's theme, rearranged and reinstrumentated in dozens of different ways to match the tone of the particular scene. mat has quick little snippets of his theme tune play during various scenes of his, often mixed with the old blood theme from s1, and it finally blares out in full glory for the first time during the horn of valere scene, to parallel how mat is truly finding himself for the first time. even secondary characters like liandrin, siuan, and aviendha have their own dedicated theme tunes that play during their scenes and are never repurposed as background music in other characters' scenes. and all the themes have lyrics in the old tongue that suit the character or concept the theme is about! in conclusion, lorne balfe is truly doing the Most, and i'm so grateful he's the composer for WOT and i hope he'll return for every season the show goes for.

“I heard a lot of that stuff [‘I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise’, Paul Whiteman Orchestra, ‘Chicago’] and I think that filled my computer with data. So that when I came to print out later, it was all in there. One of the great things about me and John was we both had that. We talked about some of the songs we liked, and he liked ‘Little White Lies’ … The night that you told me! Those little white lies! I knew that, so it gave us little bonds. That was his print-out. So when we came to write together we had similar print-outs, similar data from our upbringing. People tended to think of John as just a rebel or something; there was this whole other side to him that I liked, and that allowed me to get on better with him than if he’d just been a rebel.”
— Paul McCartney, interviewed in 2019.

I think a critical component to Utena’s relationship with princehood that sometimes goes a little understated in analysis is the vested personal interest utena has in not critically examining it.
The Prince was for the longest time, within her warped memory of that interaction, the reason why she was able to resist succumbing to suicidal ideation.
This was the reason why Utena felt she decided to keep living after experiencing the tragedy of loss, as well as the construct which tolerated her gender nonconformity AND was provided the ego stroking feedback loop of being a saviour.
Setting aside for a moment the questions it would beg of her relationship with Anthy and the power dynamic between them, of course she doesn’t want to examine it, of course she lashes out when Mikage implies they are so very similar in clinging to a memory (hell, even more than he knows in that instant).
