My piece for @fossil-fighters-zine !!!
I was so incredibly excited when this was announced, fossil fighters is one of those interests of mine that's so niche, that I've never properly talked about just how much I love it, or how many feelings I have about the dinaurians. Especially King Dynal. This comic is my attempt to summarize that.
I loved participating in this zine, it was awesome to meet so many talented people who also love fossil fighters!! and Dynal So if you haven't yet, go check out the zine FOR FREE on itch.io! You'll get to see this in full resolution, and a bunch of other spectacular art and stories !!!

Random Stranger: what's coral like?? Like what goes into that job? How do coral...like...work?
Me, haunted: I know you're starting out enthusiastic but I also know that experience tells me that your eyes are likely to glaze over halfway past my "ok so they ARE animals, and also photosynthesize, and also build big rocky skeleton-ish structures" starting point. I'm likely to lose you as I explain clonal colonies or during the explanation of symbiosis.
#youre gonna ask me how coral reproduction works and youre gonna see me disassociate#went through this hurdle again recently at a local rock club#luckily a rock club is already full of kinda nerds so i got them back in by telling them the skeleton is aragonite#subject came up bc they all clocked that I was REAL GOOD at spotting what was and wasnt a likely coral fossil

Hello? Taps mic. The hero of Time is a fossil because his story is so old and long dead that the shape of his corpse has been filled in with sediment and calcified it and the now people can only guess what manner of creature he used to be by the shape of his bones. I can't put the words into the story but I read a book about how in ancient Greece farmers would find mammoth bones and call them bones of giants. the bones discovered in a place with many thunderstorms were called giants, who fell in battle against Zeus. people knew and questioned the stories but they still called them gods. was that boy a hero? did he really abandon their world? hello bee? i feel like you'd appreciate this crumb without the story. i don't know what to do with it but its fun to toss around in my head. he's old. he's time. he is bones in the shape of a huddled child, but his form is so strange to us we called him a warrior, a beast, a giant, anything but a small thing huddled in the ground long ago. I'm not like babying Time the grown man, I'm thinking the story of him. Wind’s idea of The Hero of Time and the Guy that we call Time are not the same person, ok? Taps mic. Like is this thing on? Can you hear me?

My friend said he hates taxonomists because they make stuff up. (There was also a rant about fish not existing and birds being reptiles mixed in there, but yeah). What's your opinion on this, as a taxonimist?
I was having a similar debate with a sixteen-foot tall animated candelabra the other day. No idea where they get it from.
#this is a stupid answer#taxonomists are doing their best okay#well#some of them are#higher taxonomy is a mess#but that's mostly dealt with by people who are not real taxonomists#and another problem is that people working on living taxa often do not talk with the people working on fossil taxa and vice versa#so reconciling the two is hard#see also: Wikipedia's taxonomy hellscape#answers by Mark#Anonymous

#i want to add this to my right arm sleeve now...
Do iiiit!!!
Haha, I need to text my tattoo artist and see if he's interested 😂 There isn't a huge area between the pronghorn's antlers, so I'm not sure how much detail he'd be able to work into it. Also, it's right in the gutter (elbow pit), so it'll probably be annoying and bleed a lot, but I'll report back if he's intrigued ;D
<3

have an extra cat hc as a thanks for those delicious shelly hcs (praying for more 🙏)
Cats love warm and cozy places, no wonder they love sleeping near fireplaces or heaters. Well Vee, being a robot and all that, feels much more comfortable in colder environments because she doesn't overheat as easily in them. This, in combination with her love for tight, cozy spaces has led to the fridge being her number 1 victim. There have been countless times where Shelly would be looking for her at her usual hiding spots embty handed, only to find her upside-down inside the fridge- God forbid the fridge is full with stuff, she will remove it's contents just so she can fit inside and chill (literally). It's safe to say that Winter would be her favourite season for this reason.
I like to imagine that Shelly would be the opposite of this- she CANNOT stand the cold. In Winter time she's a shivering mess (if there's no internal heating in the building). She needs at least 2 layers of clothing just to feel warm enough to function (poor thang 💔). Vee would totally open their bedroom window in a cold snowy morning to enjoy some fresh air while Shelly would be curled up under her many layers of blankets and contemplating whether or not to throw a brick at Vee for opening the damn window again. She can withstand the heat wayyy better than your average human though. Sitting on a hot summer beach for 6 hours straight digging around for pretty clams and rocks would probably be her favourite Summer activity. Unfortunately she wouldn't be able to bring her robowife at the beach because the sand and the heat would probably kill her LMAO.
-cat vee anon
You know, you and me here, we had the same thought process, just different reasons. I'll explain don't worry XD
I always imagined that Vee would like dark places, and would curl up in thee darkest areas of the house for comfort, as I believe she's mentally ill and finds bright lights and loud noises extremely jarring and uncomfortable outside of her gameshows. So she'd find the quietest, darkest area of the house - the fridge. At first they'd just find a little bit of food kicked out of the fridge and think she forgot to put away stuff she moved out of the way to help Shelly make herself meals, but they'd open the fridge and always find Vee curled up on the bottom shelf, fast asleep. This leads to them never using that shelf for food, that's Vee's shelf now, that's where she goes. She especially does this in the summer, as Gardenview had temperatures regulated so it was always the same temp year round but Shanon obviously does not have that. She's just an autistic dinosaur fangirl who works at a daycare after all, not the owner of a massive educational center and museum. She just lives in a random ass 3 bedroom house that she inherited, of course she's not going to have the same temperature regulation tech Gardenview has. Vee very much tends to overheat constantly in the summer, and the two have never been more grateful she's a robot as she tends to go back to wearing just a bowtie in the summer, though they do learn she does have very cute details programmed into her when she's hot. Veronica did that, let's be real, she'd definitely program Vee to have digital sweat and blush when her systems are starting to overheat so they know what's going on with her. An unintended side effect of this is Vee panting like a dog when she's way too hot, which they all find really cute, but they never see her doing it unless she's literally about to shut down from over heating. Which is sad, they love seeing her act cute 💔
You're absolutely right about Shelly though, that fossil is DEFINITELY reptile coded - she's a fucking dinosaur though so I'm pretty sure I'm not the first to say that pfft. She'd love being at the beach, being in her sand pits, wearing sundresses and basking in the heat of summer. She'd go to the beach with Shanon often and come home with a large bucket of seashells just to show them off to Vee, telling her everything about what could've lived inside of them, and Vee eats it all up she loves when Shelly autisms near her. Shelly would go on for literal days about her shells if she didn't need to sleep, eat and drink, and Vee would happily listen to it all, even if she's overheating and uncomfortable as shit. I love to imagine Shanon buying Vee those cooling mats for dogs so she could sprawl out on them and be around Shelly more during the summer, because Vee would absolutely use those to keep cool and be near her beloved.
I feel like they'd come to agreement on the window thing though, as Shelly would die to have hot air come in during the summer. They'd both have 20 minutes alone in their room during their favorite season every morning just to bask in the air with the window open, and be allowed to open it again if the other isn't home/in another room as long as they close it when they come in (they do). They're not the kind of couple that would purposely piss off each other, unless they're just teasing each other and not actually getting mad at each other. Sure they'd have married couple arguments here and there, but nothing they can't make compromises on. Shelly gets her 20 minutes of hot summer air in their room every summer morning, Vee gets her 20 minutes of cold winter air every winter morning, and they both chill with the windows open in the spring and fall because they both enjoy those seasons. Win win.
Oh yeah that poor fossil would be absolutely bedridden a LOT in the winter, shivering constantly, has a cold/flu 90% of the time, always in a bundle of blankets and under a heat lamp. Vee and Shanon hunt down thee thickest, warmest clothes for her every winter, but its never enough. Thankfully Vee would rarely ask Shelly to go outside in the winter though (snow = water) so she'd always have a reason to be bundled up on the couch now, and often be snuggled up with her favorite lil tv and watching Christmas movies with her. Or singing songs by the fireplace with a cup of cocoa in her claws, her robot wife playing the guitar not far from her and enjoying life. Vee always makes her the best soups to keep her warm too... Even though nobody but Vee knows how she knows how to make such good soups. (Spoiler - Sprout taught her) Vee will never admit how she learned, saying it's a chef's secret, though it tastes oddly familiar to Shelly. Shelly stops questioning the fifth time she asked tho, she knows Vee's a stubborn ass when she wants to be, she'll never reveal her secrets until she wants to.
Poor Shanon though, she has so many more bills to pay now, she has to try to keep them both comfortable year round with their vastly different needs. She's just happy they're alive and well though.
(Also congrats on embracing your anon name, I'm still incredibly happy you love it! ♡)

huge news: paleontologists reporting new dinosaur and they've named it after loki
#figured this was of interest to tumblr#also reading about this introduced me to the apparently real thing#of 'commercial paleontology'#in which people dig up bones and sell them to rich people who keep them in their homes#thankfully a museum was able to purchase these bones back in 2019#but can you imagine if they'd been outbid?#we just wouldn't have a new dinosaur!#personally I think everyone involved in selling and buying fossils should be kicked off a cliff :)#if you want to claim bones so bad#donate money to a museum and get a plaque
