Rebellion

Part of me, when I was a teenager, thought that my rebellion was the big push for freedom that was necessary due to my age, that it would die once I was older, once I’d proven myself, once I’d burned the requisite bridges. I believed it was a phase, as I was told by condescending adults, and I was relieved to think it. For who really wants to struggle against the norm, the net of allowance, forever?

I was wrong. As I age, my rebellion deepens. I have little rebellions every day, big ones somedays, and some always. Today I rebelled against a man who, unprompted, had left his sweatshirt at my house so I could enjoy the heavy softness of it and think of him. He, not a lover or a boyfriend, asked if I would take it with me to my new home. I said perhaps I would and he countered with, “Don’t let another man wear it.”

I rebelled. I rebelled against being told who I can and cannot lend my possessions to. I rebelled against the possessiveness of the statement. I rebelled against the implication that if I leant it to another man it would mean I was fucking him. I rebelled against the implication that there is something wrong with me, a single woman in her late thirties, fucking anyone I damn well please.

At my age, single, a woman nearing forty who operates largely in the worlds of boats, motorcycles, and adventure, a man’s world, men I know are mostly married. Those who are not date whomever they like and other men laud their freedom. I date a couple of men whom I like, and the other men do not laud my freedom. They imply that I am a slut, they imply it is my fault when relationships end, especially if it is not, and they imply that I am overly emotional when I am cheated on, slandered, and slut shamed. 

I rebel. 

I say out loud my rebellion and I will keep saying it. I didn’t want to have to keep fighting when I was this age. I thought it would end and I could rest, but I look at the women who make me free -- Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Hillary Clinton, Elspeth Beard, Angela Davis, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Edith Windsor, even Emma Watson and Taylor Swift -- and I know that my rebellion will never end.

I rebel because I must.

I rebel because I can, for all those who can’t.
