I’ve often considered that he might have some version of Stockholm syndrome and would need to be deprogrammed if he ever divorces and returns to the UK. I mean Diana’s perfume, claiming to be speaking to Diana’s ghost, the cosplay, the psycho therapies, the drugs and alcohol plus her inability to let go of him or let him out of her sight. She has spent his money, taken over every single thing that he has, Polo, Invictus, speaking at his events, even in Nigeria they forced her to walk behind him and he appears to be apologetic about that, I think he’s a DV sufferer. I feel a modicum of sympathy for him, but then again look at all of the destruction he’s caused by hooking up with the wrong person.

If these books disappoint you (valid!!), you can always give a chance to Prince Lestat trilogy, a soft reboot that I personally prefer to 90s and 00s books.

Thinking about how, when Harry Potter is inevitably rebooted or reformulated or repackaged, cis people will crawl out of the woodwork to defend watching it. How quickly allies will fold when faced with new and updated wizard guff, how Rowling will get royalty checks even if she doesn't write anything, how her name and her franchise will be propagated and reproduced ad nauseam. To a new generation and to the original fans still clinging to the series. How the discourse will tire and corrode me and all my trans family and how we'll see new defenses of house elves and goblins and how whatever paltry nods to diversifying the story will be used as shields against critics. The only saving grace over the past years has been that the vast majority of post-Hallows material has been terrible, that her limitations as an author are clearer and clearer, and that her cultural presence teeters on fading. But that's not how media properties work these days; there is no end to any IP, no way in hell that WB will let the property die. So its going to be revived and regenerated and maybe Rowling will be pushed to the side but she'll still get money from it, money that she'll use to fund DV shelters that exclude trans women, fund anti-trans policies in the UK and abroad, fund the anti-independence movements tying Scotland to England, and on and on. And trans people and Jewish people and Black people will call bullshit, will ask people to stop watching and stop supporting, and people just wont care.

"Late Night Love" by Octo Octa

MG:

I think “Late Night Love” probably goes off in a club. It has the bones of “Popcorn” in its bubbly, percolating percussion and layers of droning beats for tonal contrast and to anchor the song in time. It’s Casio Krautrock trance music and it’s permissive of the classic oldhead bob, but it also embraces limbs akimbo, flailing like bare branches in a winter gale. I think it probably goes off in a club but I also think that rigidly fusing genre to purpose is like trying to sum somebody all the way up with a couple signifiers and a personality test. It flies in the face of the beautiful, profound absurdity of our existence and it wastes away the polymorphous freedom of creativity at the center of art, the genre that supersedes all genres.

Sure, I can see "Late Night Love" working in a club, but like MG says part of the fun here is how easily Octo Octa evokes other realms just as strongly. I'm reminded of early electronic music in its bleep bloop loops and progressions, specifically the work of electronic pioneer Raymond Scott. "Late Night Love" could drop into your set if you're playing a basement club at 3:30AM and aren't hitting peak time but need to keep the energy going for another 5 hours. But it could also soundtrack a sped-up chase sequence, or maybe be the bed music for a rube goldberg style series of catastrophes. Basically, if whoever's running the next Looney Tunes reboot hasn't reached out to Octo Octa already they've missed a trick.

I'm revisiting one of my past families (the Boughs), but I foolishly made their goofy little story dependent on their calling Dragon Valley home.

So naturally, I can't make that world work. I've tried three times now to build them a new house there, and it's crashed every time (usually, but not always, when I go to place stairs). I can play most other worlds for days without trouble, but not DV.

It isn't important in the grand scheme of things, and I suppose if I could come up with some creative reason for them to have to live in Dragon Valley, I can come up with some creative reason for them not to have to live in Dragon Valley. Or I can reboot 'em and pretend the past never happened. Really, who cares? It's a game!

But it would be nice if when you paid EA money, they delivered something a little less crash-y.

“Just for me” by PinkPantheress

DV:

While it’s obviously about a toxic fixation, the best part of “Just for me” is how it’s only slightly-less-obviously about the failed casting of some kind of love spell on the object of the narrator’s deranged affection. She’s turned her diary into a spellbook, collected hair from them, and is after teardrops next. It’s absolutely deranged, stalker behavior, delivered like a self-aware confession that she’s gone a bit too far. Producer Mura Masa makes “Just for me” one of PinkPantheress’s gentlest, sweetest tracks; her vocals float delicately over the trebly loops and the sound effects that drop like ad libs. It feels both wildly incongruent and also entirely appropriate for a story that could slot into a B-plot of the Charmed reboot without changing a word. “Just for me” is delicate and precise; so is a magic wand; so is a dagger.

Sitting like a centerpiece at the intersection of an elaborate world set in a snow globe, in danger of being leveled with a single shake, and the bliss of a toddler’s brain, where that same world, intact or otherwise, can be forgotten as soon as it’s out of sight is “Just for me,” a diaphanous and bubbly take on obsession. It also reminds me of one of my favorite episodes of Law & Order: SVU -- “Pretend,” where an adult women continually reinvents herself as a teenager. As is the case with every episode of L & O, the end is given away early in the episode, this time when the woman describes the death of her classmate as “exsanguination” in an obviously affected baby voice. It’s the macabre at its finest, a little creepy, a little eye-widening, very funny. PinkPantheress delivers “Just for me” with all the energy of an immortal being trapped in the body of someone constantly perceived as sweet. She’s warning us all that she’s deadly, she’s powerful, and she’s not as she appears, but it keeps coming out in soft whispers and pastel beat fills.

the reboot’s designs are definitely better, but I prefer the original’s art style (everyone is so round!! so soft!!) so what if… we combined the strengths of them both to make the most adorable ducks possible
