An Ode to a Silenced Night

Tonight, a father wept for his

lost daughter,

Appalled by deeds of his fellow

men.

Tonight, a student lost his

guiding star

To the flawed system he is bound

to serve.

Tonight, a patient's final

breath was stolen

By the disease our society

continues to ignore.

Tonight, we lost more than just

a doctor.

Tonight, the citizens of this country

Lost another piece of their

fragile freedom

To the justice that is always

too late.

Cuando anoche entré en la estación de tren estaba ya vacía y sin vigilancia. Pasaban las once de la noche y yo venía de muy buen humor porque lo había pasado muy bien en la cena. Vi que me precedían dos tipos medio raros que andaban despacio. Hmm, cautela. Les adelanté por la izquierda para llegar antes que ellos a las escaleras mecánicas. No pasa nada, ¿ves como no pasa nada?. De repente, a menos de un metro de mí, el más bajito  (delgado, bigote, cuarenta o cincuenta años) me habló: “Eh, guapa, qué tal, puedo acompañarte, ¿no?, ¿no quieres?, ¿Eh?, bueno, nada, eh, pasa buena noche, adiós, guapa, adiós”.

Su voz acompañó durante toda la maniobra; mientras los rodeaba e intentaba no pensar en lo vacía que estaba la estación, mientras bajaba las escaleras mecánicas desiertas, y entraba en el túnel que me llevaba al andén, también desierto. Y yo pensando, “¿Le contesto? Que no vengan al mismo andén, que se queden del otro lado, que haya gente esperando abajo, tendría que haberle contestado..:”. Por detrás oí a su compañero indicarle, “Es por la izquierda, por la izquierda...”, ¿se estaba viniendo detrás de mí?. Pero no. Bajaron al otro andén; en el mío había gente. Me acordé de un compañero de clase inmovilizándome contra la pared de un pasillo a los trece años, otro encadenándome a una valla junto con una amiga para “jugar” por la misma época, un tipo siguiéndome durante media hora y subiéndose a mi autobús cuando tenía veinte, otro medio drogado agarrándome del pantalón en mitad de una calle a los veintiuno... Respiré, saqué mi libro, tomé el tren a casa.

En la salida de mi parada, según comenzaba a subir el último tramo de escaleras mecánicas, un tipo (gorra, barriga, treinta o cuarenta años) que estaba dado la vuelta se me quedó mirando fijamente. Seguí subiendo, pasé por su lado, y en voz baja me dijo “Guapa, qué tal, que dios te bendiga, buenas noches...”. No me tocó. Subí más rápido, tomé el camino largo a casa, que está algo (no mucho) mejor iluminado, intenté no pensar, llegué a casa bien, todo en orden, todo normal.

El miedo conforma la normalidad.
