I wrote a poem for Cold Sands danmei novel years ago, right after I finished the novel because I was so inspired by the story and it made my heart ache. Here is the poem:

Wings clipped by truth The fall swift and harsh Lies unveiled  Fate strung a web of deceit  A trap, snaring the victim This bird, tied down Voice cut-out -silenced Never to sing Never to cry out Never to sing its beautiful melodies once more Never to give sound to its pain The world itself, what a beautiful cage- A big and wide unknown, and sometimes deceitful place Freedom- is only a short illusory image  Unobtainable- A Mirage in the desert when one is dying from thirst Just out of reach, as though grasping at sand as it slips through your fingertips And as the dark begins to unravel Twist and unwind- Mighty is the weight thrust upon the heart, Subduing its pulse, the beating drum- a strangled ba-thump...ba-thump...ba-thump... An anchor drowning the soul, Just as as heavy as one that bears a crown upon their head,  No escape is possible now  As the strings of fate tighten, the birds wings are broken Fragmented and shattered Unable to never fly Never again to soar the skies

Did you ever once hear the Greek tale of a boy, the boy who wanted to fly close to the sun?

His father created wings of made wax for his child and warned him, told him not to fly to high, to not fly to close to the sun.

However, the boy, Icarus, didn't listen to his father's words.

He flew, soaring higher, and higher, as close as he could get to the sun. His wings made of wax were melted away by the suns brilliance and Icarus fell to earth.

To his end.

And the Lotus flower, that blooms at the bottom of a lake, steeped in mud, struggles and craves, longing and yearning for the suns brilliance, but they can never touch the sun.

And a bird, born with wings to fly, can only fly so high, but never crossing that line, that boundary.

And sometimes love is just the same.

Not every story can have a happy ending, no matter the toil, the strife, the pain.

And some times, no my matter how much you love someone, you may forever be enemies, on opposing sides, love hidden deep in your heart, and all you can do, is to stare wistfully at the horizon, yearning until the end.

Finish reading Record of the missing sect master.

That was the most intricate long standing plan for revenge I've ever read in danmei. Maybe it's because I haven't read much lol. When your enemies are all in high position and work together closely and secretly while maintaining their seemingly pure reputation and also are very powerful. That's why taking all of them down took 10 long years of meticulous planning!

How long have you been into danmei, how did you get into it / what was your first danmei?

I read MDZS in 2018 if that counts? But otherwise I saw Global Examination randomly mentioned in around September last year and thought it looked interesting. Read the manhua, enjoyed it, continued with the novel and have been randomly reading stuff since. (English Vol 1 is open for preorders btw!)

Don't have a particular answer so I'll go with the two MCs from my first two faves above :D You Huo and Chi XiaoChi. Competant, badass, rebellious, q_q puts themselves at risk to help others. JiuHuo and LouChi are both very soft and adorable and wholesome ships that fight their way to be together q_q.

Hmm. I haven't been able to get into any of Priest's works. Might be the writing style, I managed to finish Mo Du which was nice but somehow just don't feel satisfied :X

Also I liked MDZS and TGCF but didn't particularly enjoy SVSSS.

Anything you've been meaning to read but still haven't?

Ballad of Sword and Wine / Qiang Jin Jiu - tried a few times but finding it hard to get through the narration / heavy world building. Will try again at some point.

this is the problem with trying to recommend cnovels is that i think tian guan ci fu is objectively a better written, easier and more fun to read book. But Mo Dao Zu Shi Has Lan WangJi.

The little lord frowned infront of him. "But there is so little we know of the sword. Maybe the sword didn't hurt him despite his demon blood because he is a child?"

"No, the legends are very clear. Demons cannot touch the sword without getting hurt. There has been no demon in history who has been able to touch this sword without getting hurt... unless we missed something in history."

Both of them sat there, mulling over the limited information they had to work with. Fan Ying darren peered over their little lord. The young boy, who had just become a man had barely started to live again after awakening the Cloud Light Sword. The child, despite all of their efforts, refused to eat, drink, sleep, or even move around unless he was trying to awaken his sword before.

To see him finally focusing on anything else besides the raw grief over his loss and his daughter was rare. The anything in question being a small child currently sleeping in his lap.

Fan Ying was sure that this opportunity was sent from heavens. That with this, their little lord will finally start healing from his heart shattering grief.

"We have poured over all the records. This child is carrying the jade Zhuo family members carry, claiming to have receieved it from his mother. The only unaccounted member in Zhuo family in recent generations is your grandaunt, mayhaps his mother received it from her. We cannot recognise any other name despite his claim that he hails from one of the biggest sect in entire jianghu. He got here due to some artificat from your clan's treasures, which one, we are still not able to determine. And if all of that is not enough, he clearly resembles you a lot. If he was born alongside you, you would have been twins. At the very least, this does proves that he is indeed a member of Bing Yi blood despite showing visible traits of being a demon."

Xiao Zhuo darren showed no reaction, continuing to stroke the young boy's hair. The small bundle of furs stirred lightly, tightly curling into himself as if he was feeling cold. The little lord moved around a little, adjusting the fur cloak he had put on the young charge so it covered him entirely, hiding the small child's face in his chest.

"So you are saying that we have no way to return him to his family?"

Fan Ying only sighed. "Zhuo darren, you had seen how he was behaving when he arrived here. Despite not outwordly showing it, he was clearly frightened, claimiing that his older brother will not accept him as he is now. He also mentioned him being the cause of his gege's young brothers death, though I doubt that, servents always gossip needlessly and he heard it from them. He looks well taken care of which means that the Gong Sect he mentioned must be an influential, rich sect, but he was not behaving as a young master normaly does. He claims his parents died some time ago. It is likely that he was taken care of only as a responsibility due to his blood. Now that he has shown visible signs of being a demon, there is no guarantee he will be taken care of after this. You know how prejudiced people are with demon blood."

Zhuo Yichen involuntarily tightened his hold on the young child. Despite their young lord's vehemence at hating demons and inexperience at handling young children, the young boy had clearly demonstrated the opposite, refusing to hand over the child to anyone else ever since he arrived, taking care to coax him, wipe his tears, and feed him some delicious fruits.

"You said it yourself, he is carrying the same jade my grandaunt was supposedly carrying. Father often mentioned to brother how our grandfather was a bit... strict. She must have married a demon, which may have caused her name to be struck off from main family lineage, and her daughter married Yuanzhi's father. So, he is family. And he has no parents either..."

"Zhuo darren, you don't need to convince me," the older man smiled. "You only need to convince yourself. You are the lord of Bing Yi clan now. What you decide is what we will follow. If you chose to take in this child and take care of him, no one should have any objections."

Zhuo darren looked at him with such hope that he felt his heart breaking. The boy himself was young, too young to take care of a child. But he was alone too.

So why shouldn't two children, who were all alone in the world take care of each other?

"Right." The little lord cleared his throat. He stood up, lightly gathering the bundle in his arms but staggered a bit, still recovering from the year long starvation spell he had gone through. He carefully tucked in the child's face in the croak of his shoulder. "Make all the arrangements for tomorrow, for his clothes and his belongings. Also call for a doctor, a trustworthy one. We need to ensure he is healthy. After he is settled down, we will talk about including his name back on the family register."

Fan Ying also stood up. " Zhuo darren, a room is prepared for him, you can leave him there-"

"No need," the little lord had already started to walk away. "So much have changed for him in short amount of time. It's not feasible for him to wake up alone, or to an unfamiliar face. He will sleep with me."

The little lord vanished, his steps silent, a direct juxtaposition to a year ago when his mere presence will cause the sound of bells to ring in the air. Despite the melancholy though, Fan Ying was sure that the coming days will be an improvement.

For both his little lord and the small didi he had acquired just now.

Do you have any recommendations for danmei novels that are at all like SVSSS in tone? Or MDZS?

I have already read TGCF, but while I enjoyed it, the extended downward spiral without as many mental breaks from cutting to happier times proved to me a bit much for me.

I also tried 2ha but bounced off it hard as the POV character is just too unlikable at the start (even knowing why he's like that courtesy of tumblr spoilers couldn't save the unpleasantness of his POV).

I’m gonna be honest, I don’t think I’ve read any book that quite hits the same spot as svsss while having similar quality. The only novel I can think of is that’s similar in feel is Peerless Immortal Surrounded by Demonic Disciples, but the writing quality kinda sucks. Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know feels like it has a similar comedic tone to svsss, but that’s about it with the similarities. For mdzs recs, First-Class Lawyer, Copper Coins by the same author, and Record of the Missing Sect Master comes closest. These have MCs that are most similar in personality to Wei Wuxian without also having that extended downward spiral with minimal breaks that you mentioned.

The thing about mxtx’s writing is that I think her most unique skill amongst the writers of cnovel I’ve read with serious topics is her ability to weave humor into dark moments of the story to give reprieve from the pressure without completely breaking the momentum. A lot of stories either end up dropping the humor as the plot gets serious or adding too much humor, causing the somber moments to seem goofy and unserious. However, if you want stories that are mostly humorous with a few moments of somberness expertly woven in, then I’d suggest Ascending, Do Not Disturb and The Times Spent in Pretense.

Of the novels in your poll, if you want a couple that gets together relatively early, that’s either Pet Palm Fish (somewhere mid-novel) or QJJ (somewhere around the 900-page mark, but the story is 4,000 pages long). Pet Palm Fish is a much lighter read—though be wary of the ableism—while QJJ is darker due to the political intrigue and war themes, though none of the drama revolves around the characters’ relationship. Once they’re together, they’re basically married, and before that, it’s mutual scheming and lust.

However, if you want a novel where the main pairing get together relatively early on/start off together, I recommend:

The first two novels are relatively low angst, though Mr. Melancholy bumps the angst level up towards the middle-end of the novel. Golden Stage/Golden Terrace has political intrigue in it, but the characters get together early (it starts on them being bestowed a marriage by the emperor, to set the tone) so pre-relationship pining is to a minimum. Record of the Missing Sect Master is probably the angstiest of the bunch as it deals with cultivation world corruption and such, but the main pairing get together little before mid-way, so you only have to deal with minor pining, as the rest of the pre-relationship period is kinda just hijinks and a big game of chicken.

Edit: So I hate slow burns, so getting into danmei WAS HARD!!!! So I'm looking for romance, and I don't mind pining a bit. But most danmei are slow burn with pining, so I don't think I'll ever find a danmei where it's mostly romance. I got into SVSSS cause I really liked the couple and didn't know it was gonna be a slow burn. TGCF I got into cause i saw so many romantic things, HuaLian! Didn't know I was gonna have angst city!!!! I got into MDZS cause I honestly read all of MXTX books so let's just read the last one! I didn't know they were all slow burn or just everyone pining forever😅😅

i miss reading wuxia. the jianghu is a clowns show. record of the missing sect master illustrates it amazingly. tyk is also great at catching the inherent hilarity and absurdity of the situation; practising righteousness and moral uprightness in public, coveting riches, power, and status in private

i love wkx so much he is so pretentious and absolutely unaware of how weird he comes off as. its adorable. these moments when he tries to give a grandiose impression like some elegant gentleman, refined yet competent, and it just doesnt land as he thought it would be, are so human. hes so cute

honestly a bit underwhelmed bcoz i hold priest on a pedestal but this is an earlier work and i can see the beginnings of her skill.

it wasnt the best but a good read nonetheless, will probably even reread actually.

but if you liked these themes, pls pls pls read Record of the Missing Sect Master. its completely translated on NU and its honestly the whole package: complex and air tight plot, power couple dynamics, clown ass shit, you get it. its good.

I’ve noticed that danmei novels have the opposite problem of YA novels. In YA novels the protagonists are usually really bland, so they can be used as a self insert if you want. And the love interests are usually considerably more interesting than the main character, so you can pretend that you’re dating someone cool. Whereas in danmei novels the main characters are usually really fleshed out characters with reasonable goals and an actual personality. But half the time the love interests are boring as hell , with their only personality traits being “horny and sad”.

There are of course a bunch of exceptions to both of these, but it’s an interesting trend I’ve noticed. (And if you were curious, yes this is a personal attack on Lan Wangji and Wenren Heng from record of the missing sect master, and I guess Hua Cheng and Luo Binghe to a lesser extent because I actually like those two)
