Zachary Levi of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Embraces His Inner Geek
Browsing Midtown Comics with the star of the forthcoming “Shazam!” (Yes, fanboy selfies were taken.)
By Alexis Soloski
Tumblr media
Zachary Levi at Midtown Comics near Times Square. Christopher Lee for The New York Times.
Tumblr media
"This is giving me the most unbelievable flashbacks,” said Mr. Levi, who was a comics fan in his youth. Christopher Lee for The New York Times.
Tumblr media
“It’s crazy to think how obsessed I was,” said Zachary Levi. “At one point in my life this was everything.”
Mr. Levi, who is 6-foot-4 and newly buff, was on the first floor of Midtown Comics, just south of Times Square, gazing up at shelves crammed with new releases. A former comics head and self-described nerd, Mr. Levi likes to browse whenever he’s in the neighborhood.
Keep reading on the New York Times website or below.
He is starring in the second season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” as Benjamin, the grumpy doctor who romances the title character, played by Rachel Brosnahan. And while “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” hasn’t announced a comics tie-in yet, Benjamin — fast-talking, freethinking, enigmatic — is arguably a hero and his chemistry with Midge could explode a lab.
Benjamin’s superpower? “Logic,” Mr. Levi, 38, said. Is that enough to withstand the force of nature that is Midge? That’s a question for the third season.
Benjamin is only one of Mr. Levi’s identities, secret and otherwise. He played Chuck Bartowski, the tech geek who became an accidental superspy in the TV comedy “Chuck.” And he was the voice of Flynn Rider, the thief with questionable intentions and great hair who rescued Rapunzel in the Disney movie “Tangled.”
He is also a Broadway star (“First Date,” “She Loves Me”). And in case you thought the musical comedy triple threat was his own personal superpower, he is pretty sure it’s empathy. “I’ve always had a really gnarly heart,” Mr. Levi said.
Next year, he’ll finally join the superhero cape brigade, in “Shazam!”Mr. Levi plays the title character, a muscular incarnation of a teenage boy suddenly granted the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.
“Also I can shoot lightning out of my hands,” he said proudly. “The wish fulfillment is very ridiculous.”
This made him minor royalty at Midtown Comics, though that morning he was assuming a lower, less electric profile. Just another fanboy. Only taller. He wore green pants and a black Under Armour puffer that concealed his physique.
Even incognito, it was clear that a hero had entered the building. Staff members trailed him as he browsed the narrow aisles, and other customers snapped surreptitious smartphone pics.
The store is large and brightly lit, but so overstuffed with comics and merchandise (Mr. Levi was especially tempted by a Captain America gelatin mold) that it looks a lot smaller.
After noting a “Shazam!” collection on the sale shelf, he paged through a “Bloom County” book and a Legend of Zelda encyclopedia shaped like an old Nintendo cartridge. “This is giving me the most unbelievable flashbacks,” he said. “I keep thinking about slapping the cartridges and blowing into them just so they would work.”
“Life was so much simpler in the ’80s,” he said. That was when he first fell in love with comics, mostly “X-Men” and its offshoots. “The idea of waking up one day and being able to teleport or fly or transform or be superstrong or whatever — the child in every single one of us is secretly hoping for that all the time,” he said.
Mr. Levi still has a box of those old comics somewhere, along with some baseball cards “that are probably worth nothing at this point,” he said. And he still plays video games. Most recently the Red Dead Redemption 2, a Western. He thought there was too much horse.
A Go-Bots comic caught his eye and then an issue of “The Avengers” that showed Jimmy Kimmel on the cover. “That’s when you know you’ve made it,” Mr. Levi said.
Mr. Levi also admired a “Star Wars” comic that styles Leia and Han like the farmers of “American Gothic.” “Tell me that’s not clever!” he said.
He wanted to see the toys and collectibles. “How do you go upstairs?” he said to a pair of boyish Midtown Comics employees. Then he answered his own question: “Oh. Where the stairs are.”
He ascended them with a speed that wasn’t quite Mercury’s, eating a meal replacement bar on the way. “Every two hours I have another meal,” he said.
Mr. Levi made a beeline toward a wall of X-Men figurines. “Gambit was my favorite,” he said, pointing to one figurine. “Because he was a total ladies man and spoke with that Cajun accent.” He went hunting for a Shazam figure in the DC Comics section, and Henry Varona, a baby-faced staffer, had to break the news to him that he wouldn’t find it.
“There’s really not one?” Mr. Levi said. “Come on. Really?”
He stared at a wall of bighead collectibles called Pops and was reminded that the toy company Funko didn’t make a figurine from his “Tangled” character, Flynn Rider. “They have a Rapunzel Pop and Maximus the Horse Pop and no Flynn Rider. What does a guy have to do to get a Funko Pop?”
He eventually found Shazam, albeit in T-shirt form. “Does that ever get old?” Mr. Varona asked him. “No way, man,” Mr. Levi said, shaking his head as he admired the yellow lightning bolt. “It’s just the coolest.” Being entrusted with playing a superhero, he added, “is something you get for the rest of your life, and to me that’s a very big honor.”
After Mr. Levi checked out some high-end figurines, Mr. Varona asked him to sign back issues of “Shazam!” and he obliged. “This will be on eBay in 10 minutes,” he joked.
“Five,” Mr. Varona said.
He posed for selfies with the staff and then joined everyone in a group shot. “Shazam!” they said as the camera phones clicked.

The surprising truth about counterfeit Dragon’s blood
The truth is you haven’t been buying Dracaena draco, and the surprise is; that’s a good thing.
Tumblr media

Part one in a series on Dragon’s blood resin.
The other Dragon’s blood; latex, dye and poison
In a modern magical context, Dragon’s blood is often erroneously assumed to simply be the resin sap produced by the Dragon tree, but as with most things in this world, the truth is more nuanced.
The Calamus, Pterocarpus and Croton genera contain plants which produce gums, latexes and resins which have been labeled as Dragon’s blood; these have been used medicinally and as dyes. One example, the latex of the Sangre de drago , Croton lechleri, native to South America, can be used as a natural adhesive bandage. As for their use as pigments, due to the nature of vegetable dyes, kino gums may resemble blood when oozing from wounds on a tree but often do not produce a red colour pigment.
Tumblr media
The familiar kino of the Eucalyptus, Corymbis calophylla. Credit: Wikimedia Commons
Outside of ethnomedical studies and natural remedies, these forms of Dragon’s blood are of less prevalent concern to modern paganism.
Next up we have the brilliant but deadly vermilion, also known as Dragon’s blood, or China red. This was traditionally produced from powdered mineral cinnabar. Cinnabar is a highly toxic form of mercury sulphide which was used in antiquity as a dye, cosmetic and in jewelry. Unsurprisingly you’re not likely to encounter this stuff on the market in its natural form, although vintage Chinese cinnabar lacquered artifacts are attractive to collectors. While cinnabar is very dangerous, with careful handling the lacquer renders it relatively inert.
Tumblr media
A wooden plate lacquered with cinnabar. Photo credit: Wikimedia commons
Finally, the form that most of us are more familiar with; Dragon’s blood incense. This is usually derived from either the Daemonorops or Dracaena genera; only the latter of which is also used as a dye.
The true Dragon’s blood tree
The Dragon’s blood resin you see for sale is very unlikely to be from the true dragon’s blood tree. It’s also worth noting that any form of genuine Dragon’s blood essential oil does not exist.
The popular houseplant known as Lucky bamboo, or Chinese water bamboo, Dracaena braunii, is actually a much closer relative to the genuine Dragon’s blood trees. Continuing the theme of misattribution, it is not Chinese nor a bamboo; it’s native to Cameroon in West Africa.
Tumblr media
Some lucky bamboo growing on my altar.
The family it belongs to, Asparagaceae, gives us the Agave used in the production of tequila and, as one could guess from the name, the vegetable asparagus.
When people talk about the Dragon’s blood tree, they are usually referring to Dracaena draco or Dracaena cinnabari. Although there are other Dracaena species harvested for their resin, I’ll be focusing on these two as they’re the most widely known and referred to. Due to its distinctive long trunk with leafy branches extending from the crown, these trees are sometimes called a Dragon’s blood palm. This is unfortunate because it is not a palm, while its impostor is.
Tumblr media
Not a palm. Photo credit: Wikimedia commons
Dracaena draco is a popular ornamental garden tree in Australia, whereas D. cinnabari is much less sought after due to its extremely slow growth rate and similar appearance. Given favorable conditions, the average Dragon’s blood tree takes 10 years to reach a height of just over one meter.
Tumblr media
My child. I picked up this D. Draco at Bunnings when it was only 20cm tall. It’s now 3 years of age.
Unfortunately both D. Draco and D. Cinnabari are threatened species; vulnerable to extinction in their native habitats. Both trees have an incredibly slow growth cycle, taking over a decade to reach their first state of reproductive maturity. Habitat loss, over-harvesting, desertification, climate change and modern agriculture techniques all present hazards to their survival.
The common Dragon’s blood cane palm Daemonorops draco, sometimes referred to as Demon cane due to its thorns, is cultivated in Southeast Asia, with much of the resin on the market coming from Indonesia and Thailand. Endemic to the tropics close to the equator, the Arecaceaefamily of plants also gives us raffia and coconuts.
Tumblr media
Not to be confused with the Araceaefamily like this Dieffenbachia dumb cane. Because whoever named them hated dyslexic people.
Daemonorops draco is the stuff you’ll commonly see for sale. I often see Dragon’s blood in stores labelled as Dracaena draco, but it’s increasingly rare and difficult to find genuine Dracaena resin.
Although it’s unfortunate that so many otherwise reputable outlets are mislabeling their product, the reasons I posited this as a good thing are threefold. Firstly, Dracaena draco resin, due to its rarity is prohibitively expensive.
Secondly is the issue of the commercial exploitation of an endangered species, making the use of a plentiful alternative attractive. Harvesting Dracaena resin leaves the tree vulnerable to fungal infection which may kill it. Due to this vulnerability and their low numbers, it is favorable that the commonly available Dragon’s blood incense is derived from the plentiful and fast growing Daemonorops draco, as demand for the resin could not be satisfied otherwise.
Thirdly is a matter of personal opinion in regards to their aromatic properties. The rare D. cinnabari and D. draco are almost entirely scentless unless actively being burnt. As Dragon’s blood resin is used in all sorts of aromatic products beyond incense, such as soaps and papers, these would lose their appeal if Dracaena was used in things that aren’t intended to be set on fire. Conversely the subtle but commanding, warm, masculine scent of Daemonorops draco is quite pleasant and apparent even when not lit.
Tumblr media
This red sigil chalk I made using palm Dragon’s blood should definitely not be set on fire.
Now that we’ve established the difference between these three types of Dragon’s blood resin, what about their aromas, magical uses and the mysterious Dragon’s blood ink?
In my next posts I will demonstrate the recipe for Dragon’s blood ink and explore the properties of Daemonorops draco, Dracaena draco and Dracaena cinnabari in greater detail.

Ice cream has come a long way since the Good Humor truck. There’s nothing wrong with a simple cup or cone, but these days, you’re just as likely to find the ultimate creamy-cold treat rolled, sandwiched, flash-frozen or cloaked inches-thick in toppings right before before your eyes.
Bay Area scoop shops are leading some high-concept trends these days, and the variety of bold, Instagram-worthy creations is enough to give you brain-freeze — in a good way. As it turns out, the history of American ice cream has always been tied to a sense of innovation, says Amy Ettinger, ice cream historian and author of the new book, “Sweet Spot: An Ice Cream Binge Across America (Dutton, $26).
Smitten Ice Cream’s Brrr machine churns creamy ice cream before your eyes. (Photo: Audrey Ma)
In the book, the Santa Cruz-based author delves into the legacy of extreme ice cream, starting with our Founding Fathers, who fancied oyster ice cream (yes, really), to the post-Prohibition novelty boom that gave birth to Eskimo Pies and Polar Cream Wafers, and on to Ben & Jerry’s, with its signature swirls and mix-ins.
“There’s always been this element of showmanship when it comes to ice cream,” Ettinger says. “It’s not just something you eat, it’s something you experience.”
Perhaps no Bay Area scoop shop is more synonymous with invention than San Francisco-based Smitten Ice Cream. To churn the ultimate from-scratch, made-to-order ice cream, founder Robyn Sue Fisher teamed up with a retired aerospace engineer to build a machine that flash-freezes ice cream at the time of sale using liquid nitrogen.
Today, Fisher’s Brrr machines and their signature fog fill seven shops in the Bay Area, including outposts in Lafayette, Oakland and San Jose, and yield ice cream with an ultra-rich, creamy texture — every time. Because Fisher believes that ice cream should be pure and made only from high-quality ingredients, she works with local and organic farms and purveyors to source everything.
“Ice cream should embody the definition of taste and wholesomeness,” she says. “That’s why we hand-churn every batch, so it’s fresh and we know exactly what’s in it.”
The Thai rolled ice cream craze has swept the Bay Area. (Nhat V. Meyer/Bay Area News Group)
But even discerning foodies can’t deny the joy that comes with a smattering of rainbow sprinkles or the Benihana-like show that goes on at Icicles’ five Bay Area locations. Icicles specializes in Thai-style rolled ice cream that is mixed by hand on large ice pans, then flattened into strips and rolled into cylinders in front of you. Toppings — everything from sugary cereal to gummies — are free and limitless, a perk that contributes to the shop’s mega popularity.
Like Icicles, the soft-serve giant Milkcow is also a cultural export — this time, from South Korea, where the popular franchise originated. At the busy Fremont and Castro Valley shops, co-owners and brothers Alex and Gordon Lai top the signature soft, milk-flavored ice cream with fantastical sweets, including raw honeycomb, cotton candy and the giant, wafflelike egg puffs that they remember as a popular street food item during their childhood years in Hong Kong.
“The quality and taste of our products are of the utmost importance, but our mission is also to create fond memories and bring smiles to people’s faces,” Gordon Lai says.
Especially when it reminds you of being a kid.
“At the end of the day, people can say whatever they want about purity and ingredients, but ice cream is about being transported to childhood,” Ettinger says. “Sometimes that means having something unexpected like a celery sorbet or being able to put whatever you want on your scoop of ice cream, because that’s what you did with your family —  or it’s what you longed to do.”
Whether you fancy savory organic ice cream or wacky soft-serve, here are 12 ice cream shops where you can find sweet and innovative treats this summer.
Churned-to-order
1. Smitten Ice Cream
These small, brightly-lit scoop shops specialize in ultra-premium ice cream that is made to order using founder Robyn Sue Fisher’s liquid nitrogen Brrr machine. Due to the smaller-sized crystals achieved with liquid nitrogen, Smitten’s ice cream has a super-creamy, smooth texture. Flavors have a culinary focus, change seasonally and are often gourmet updates on classics, including Brown Sugar with Cinnamon Shortbread, Blueberry Lavender and Strawberry White Balsmatic.
Must-order: Chocolate ($5-$6) may sound simple, but it’s actually a decadently rich ganache made with TCHO’s 60 percent cacao chocolate.
Details: Seven Bay Area locations, including 3545 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Lafayette, and 3055 Olin Ave., San Jose; http://ift.tt/1eMhsfb
2. Crafts Creamery
This brightly lit shop opened two years ago and offers a variety of made-to-order (via liquid nitrogen) options: organic ice cream made with the good stuff from Straus Family Creamery, coconut-based nondairy frozen dessert and granitas. Choose your flavor — there are over 20, including matcha green tea, caramel latte and mint chocolate chip — and any mix-ins and watch as they pop it into a blender-meets-metal-bowl device, squirt it with liquid nitrogen and freeze it in minutes. Complain about the high-ish prices ($5.36-$9.69 plus toppings) all you want, but this place has lots of seating and accommodates birthday groups at no extra charge. Just give them a few days’ notice, so they can round up extra chairs.
Details: 100 Railroad Ave., Suite D, Danville; http://ift.tt/2qLXdwL
Must-order: Burnt sugar tastes like the top of creme brulee — but thick and cold.
Rolled
3. Icicles
At Icicles, ice cream is rolled into tight cylinders, then topped with cream. (Nhat V. Meyer/Bay Area News Group)
Thailand’s rolled ice cream has hit the Bay Area, beginning at Icicles’ flagship shop in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood. Choose from 11 flavors, including PB&J or Bravocado, or ask the staff to create your favorite combo by mixing the original custard base (made from farm-fresh eggs, milk, sugar and cream) with your favorite toppings. They’ll chop and flatten everything before your eyes on large ice pans, then scrape it off into pretty, finished 3-inch rolls. Unlimited toppings add to the fun. Also available: dairy-free “fruit roll ups.”
Must-order: Try Nutella and Chill ($6.50), custard base blended with bananas, graham cracker and hazelnut-chocolate spread.
Details: Five Bay Area locations including 222 E. Third Ave., San Mateo, and 600 Main St., Suite F, Pleasanton; http://ift.tt/2rejoPJ
4. Freezing Point Creamery
An unassuming shop tucked inside Chinatown, Freezing Point Creamery is a tiny, cash-only joint where you can choose from five rolled ice cream flavors: strawberry, mango, purple yam, red bean, cookies and cream, or matcha. They also offer housemade ice cream in several nontraditional flavors, including wasabi, durian and ginger. Toppings also available.
Must-order: Try the purple yam ($7), made with real bits of yam. Enjoy it with a cup of the warming — and popular — ginger milk tea ($4.95), made with organic whole milk and ginger juice.
Details: 349 Seventh St., Oakland
Soft-serve, with a twist
5. Milkcow
This South Korean export boasts creamy, not-too-sweet milk-flavored soft ice cream. Its facility in Southern California sources milk from free-range cows that are fed Italian ryegrass. Drizzles include various syrups, such as pistachio and honey — sourced from Marshall’s Farm in American Canyon — and fanciful toppings, like locally made macarons, waffle-sized egg puffs, and housemade cotton candy.
Must-order: Raw honeycomb with honey drizzle ($4-$6) offers the sweetness and slight crumble of real honey, the perfect complement to this ultra-creamy, milky soft ice cream.
Details: 5657 Auto Mall Parkway, Fremont, and 3223 Castro Valley Blvd., Castro Valley; coming soon to Pleasanton; www.milkcowusa.com
6. Curbside Creamery

Now in its third year, Tori Wentworth’s Temescal Alley scoop shop is an all-inclusive ice cream lover’s paradise. It specializes in gourmet versions of classic flavors (hello, Creamsicle) available in both traditional dairy and cashew-based vegan options. But it’s the soft-serve that we melted over — especially the smooth Thai iced tea and a slightly nutty vanilla that was thick and delicious, without even one icy crystal to bum us out. Soft-serve flavors change on Thursdays.
Must-order: Both the Salted Caramel and Bicycle Coffee Co. ($3.25-$5.75) make us swoon. Dairy-free folks: Get your hands on the vegan chocolate or vegan earl grey tea.
Details: 482 49th St., Oakland; http://ift.tt/VispTl
Extreme pops
7. Gelati Creation
This two-year-old Alameda ice-cream-on-a-stick shop specializes in housemade gelato and sorbetto pops ($3.65-$3.80 plus toppings). The sorbetto is made in-house from fresh or pureed fruit (everything from guava and passion fruit to mango and peach), water and sugar while the gelato base comes from a supplier and includes whole milk and sugar. The pops are not too sweet, which allows for layering drizzles — milk, white or dark chocolate — and toppings, such as ground nuts, chocolate chips, coconut flakes or rainbow sprinkles.
Must-order: These creations are very personal, but we’re partial to the coffee gelato pop with milk chocolate drizzle and crushed almonds.
Details: 222 B South Shore Center, Alameda; http://ift.tt/2dZ4aEN
8. Milk and Wood
The concept at this kiosk inside downtown San Jose’s hip SoFA Market is similar: Choose your flavor, your drizzle — in addition to the chocolate drizzles, they also offer sweetened condensed milk — and your toppings, and stand back as the artists make your dream a sugar-laden reality. Milk and Wood handcrafts the pops daily in up to 25 flavors, including chocolate hazelnut, mango strawberry, and cookies and cream, and offers crushed pretzels and chocolate shavings among other toppings. Everything’s made in small batches, so they often run out by evening, especially on weekends.
Must-order: Customers swear by the Green Tea Kit Kat or Mint Oreo with drizzles and toppings galore ($4-$5).
Details: 387 S. First St., San Jose; coming soon to Santa Cruz; www.milkandwood.com
Sandwiched
9. Maven’s Creamery
These macaron ice cream sandwiches are as beautiful as they are delicious. Available in cold cases at multiple locations around the Bay Area, Maven’s Creamery macarons are made with almonds, egg whites, milk and other ingredients, and come in six flavors, including bright purple Ube Macapuno, Coffee Hazelnut and speckled Rainbow Crunch. The ice cream’s thick, creamy consistency is the perfect complement to the cake-y macaron.
Details: Available at 12 Bay Area locations, including Poki Bowl in Palo Alto and San Jose, and Hang Ten Broiler in Hayward and Alameda; http://ift.tt/2jXnsN5
Must-order: The best-selling Cookies ‘n’ Cream ($6) packs all the creamy-delicious nostalgia of childhood between pretty blue macarons.
10. Cream
This ice cream sammie shop first opened in Berkeley in 2010 and has since exploded in the Bay Area. You can’t deny the variety. Gluten-free cookies? Check. Dairy-free ice cream? Yup. And the always-premium ingredients are custom-sandwiched to your specifications. Choose from 20-plus ice cream flavors and 10 fresh-baked cookies, including toffee nut, chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin plus brownie ice cream sandwiches, the Cream Taco and Do’sant — ice cream between two glazed donuts.
Must-order: We’re partial to the Caramel Cinnamon Chill ice cream, sandwiched between snickerdoodles, but it’s all good.

Eclectic flavors
11. Tara’s Organic Ice Cream
Tara Esperanza focuses on broadening your ice cream horizons. Her ice cream is made in small batches of two to four gallons at a time, using organic cane sugar and organic seasonal fruit, dairy and herbs sourced from local farms. The inventive flavors are like none you’ve likely tasted: Avocado and Baobab, for example, Butternut Curry, Chinese Five Spice, Orange Cardamom, Mocha and Lemon Verbena. For old-school purists, she also makes a killer chocolate chip ice cream.
Must-order: We love the saffron ice cream and, when available, any stone fruit flavor, including nectarine or white peach.
Details: 4731 Telegraph Ave., Oakland, and 3173 College Ave., Berkeley; www.tarasorganic.com
12. Salt and Straw
Sure, there are a lot of creameries in the Bay Area doing unique flavors, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t include this Portland export, which is already drawing 45-minute waits outside its new (and first) San Francisco scoop shop. Salt and Straw partners with local purveyors to create seasonal and unusual flavors that are OMG-good, like Arbequina Olive Oil, Pear and Blue Cheese, Avocado and Strawberry Sherbet, and Green Apple and Wasabi Flowers.
Talk about extreme: This month, Salt and Straw is featuring limited-edition ice creams made from food waste in San Francisco. Flavors include The Roxie Road (made with leftover popcorn from the Mission’s Roxie Theatre) and Roasted Sunchoke Mock Apple Pie (made with organic but misshapen sunchokes from San Francisco’s Imperfect Produce).
Must-order: Tough call. Seriously. We can’t help you. We dream of the Woodblock Chocolate at the SF shop, but the Olive Oil and Lemon Custard is also off-the-charts good.

Alternate history of motoring - part 2 (1956-60).
Time for another one.
Part 1 - https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/8dzd4k/alternate_history_of_motoring_1st_part_195055/
1956:
World events:
The Franco-South-Vietnamese anti-Vietcong offensive continued. However, in May, Chinese soldiers joined the war, turning a smackdown of the Vietcong into a stalemate on both sides.
The US was urged to join the fighting, but its populace did not want another war. It didn't help that the new president-elect, Richard M. Nixon, pledged not to do that. His election also meant that the Interstate Project would get defunded, and the space program - closed.
In April, a plot to assasinate the 1st Secretary of the Soviet Union Communist Party, Lavrientiy Beria, was discovered. As a result, Nikita Khrushchev, Georgiy Malenkov and Vyacheslav Molotov, the triumvirate behind it, were executed.
With no competition in the Party, Beria started a policy of liberalization. Moderate freedom-of-speech laws were established, a lot of spending was moved from military projects (including the cancelled space program) to civilian ones, and small enterprise was allowed.
However, this resulted in the "Months Of Fighting" in Mideastern Europe. On 24th October, anti-commjnist demonstrations in East Berlin turned into outright fighting and a revolution. Insurgents started attacking the government buildings, and they soon got support from the American, French and British troops in the city, as well as aerial supplies from these nations. In December, West German, French and Austrian soldiers joined the insurgents in GDR.
November brought figting in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. Each nation had a different outcome. After a week, the Polish government decided to start conferences with the rebels - the decided outcome was that there would be a parliamentary election in 1957, with the Worker Party candidates getting a guaranteed 50% of seats. Two weeks later, the Hungarian goverment tried to flee Budapest, but they were captured and imprisoned, and the rebels took over. The only place where fighting continued was Czechoslovakia.
The Red Army didn't intervene in these cases, as Beria strongly believed in his "socialism in one nation" principle.
In December, street fighting began in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. It was still ongoing by the end of the year.
Also, talks about the European Economic Commonwealth, European Atomic Commonwealth and Euro-Arabian Oil and Gas Commonwealth continued.
Americas:
1956 was a wild year for the US car industry.
As a result of opposition to Mexican manufacturing, strikes shook GM, Ford and Chrysler. This resulted in delays in car production, and the 1957 model year having trouble arriving at the dealers. In fact, Holdens, Opels, German Fords and Borgwards had to be imported from Europe.
This was a golden opportunity for the UAM, as their union stopping meant there weren't such delays. They launched a campaign, "If the Big Three won't make it, we will", in which customers who cancelled their Big Three car reservations were able to get discounts for their cars. This made UAM #2 in US car sales, right behind GM.
Another boost to their reputation was the Packard Florida, a V12 GT coupe/convertible with torsion bar suspension, another handling world-beater after the Talladega.
The new Holden/Chevrolet/Pontiac/Oldsmobile/Buick and Ford/Mercury compacts, as well as their performance versions, were well-received by the press, but what do reviews matter for cars that you have to wait long for, and then receive them badly-built?
Europe:
The UK had quite a few important events on the car scene.
Rolls-Royce-Bentley showed their answer to Delahaye and new US fullsizes, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and Bentley S12, V12-engined unibody luxury sedans, which were immediately dubbed "the new global standard"
The Lotus 6 got a Lotus-built engine, giving better performance than the previously-used Jaguar ones, and, more importantly, not coming from a defunct brand.
The MG MGA was shown, a "reasonably-priced" mid-engined sports car, using the new Oxford/Magnette's mechanicals.
However, most importantly, the Hillman Imp, a transverse FWD small car designed by Alec Issigonis, showed up. It sold very well, and outshone the new GM small car, the Vauxhall Cornet, as well as Ford, Austin and Morris designs.
Also, Morris' decision not to update Lanchester and Daimler designs was a bad one, with sales of these brands going down.
New French designs also surfaced, in form of the Citroen 16CV, an innovative V8 luxury sedan, the Renault 3, a small economy car, and the Simca 700, the 3's competitor. Also, Bugatti showed the Type 312, which managed to go up to 286 km/h.
The German car market was limited at the end of that year, due to fighting, and the Wartburg 311 had to have its production start delayed.
In that year, the Portugese automotive industry started, with the PAF 1300, a diesel family sedan, entering production. Spain pledged to do a similar thing.
That year's LeMons victory went to Citroen, with its purpose-built LM56 winning the race.
Asia:
Hino started producting the 500, a licensed 4-door version of the Fiat 500. It became a relative sales success, owing to its low (for non-kei-car standards) price.
Also, by that year, all 5 Japanese carmakers were making pickup trucks around 1600cc - that car type really took off.
1957:
World events:
The French and Southern Vietnamese got the upper hand in Vietnam in June, thanks to the deployment of the first French nuclear bomb on the Vietcong and Chinese forces. The increased war effort in France, as well as metal from the scrappage scheme, also helped the French, to the point where by the end of the year there were only a few Vietcong/Chinese holdouts.
In Germany, the Allied offensive continued, and by June, Berlin was taken by the capitalist forces. Next month, the German states reunited under the Federal Republic, and the capital was moved to (somewhat damaged) Berlin.
The forces moved to Czechoslovakia, capturing Prague, the government seat, in September.
In January, protests started in Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria and Romania. While the Albanian and Yugoslavian goverments stopped theirs, next month, the rebels captured the Romanian goverment, and the Bulgarian communists gave a similar compromise to the Polish one, but with them taking a guaranteed 30% of parliamentary seats and the president, in March. Surprisingly, in the July elections, the Bulgarian communists won 32%. In Romania, the postcommunists got 25% and lost the presidential race.
February saw the Soviet government give up and plan independence referendals in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Disappointingly for the Soviets, the September voting showed that all three republics wanted independence.
In April, elections were held in Hungary and Poland. In Hungary, the postcommunists were banned from competing, and their leaders arrested, despite protests. In Poland, the Workers' Party had to use its guaranteed 50% of seats, as they get 21% of the vote, and their opponents had their presidential candidate, Edward Raczyński, chosen.
The European Commonwealths talks were set back by the need to discuss all the potential new entrants.
In America, a new party, the Patriot Party, springs onto the scene, demanding import tariffs, right-to-work laws and continued segregation.
In the same country, the Global News Network, a 24-hour news station, came to the market in October. Despite comments like "who the hell wants to watch/listen to the news all the day?", its success surprised everybody, with BBC in the UK even announcing the idea of BBC News, a similar concept.
Americas:
As GM, Ford and Mopar cancelled Mexican manufacturing plans, the strikes eased up. Still, there were a few setbacks in the introduction of new GM, Ford and Mopar fullsizes, with GM now joining the unibody club and ditching Pontiac due to low sales.
The UAM's gains weren't reversed, and it kept its #2 spot even after the introduction of the new fullsizes and the Willys Eagle/Studebaker Corsair/Kaiser Vigor/Hudson Roamer midsize line.
Still, GM had a few new tricks up its sleeve. The new FWD Cadillac Eldorado showed Delahaye that Americans can also build sporty luxury sedans, and the LaSalle line, comprised of the Series 40 (rebadged, more luxurious Opel Kapitan with a LaSalle V8) and Series 50 (a V8 FWD car, drawing a lot from the Caddy Eldorado) drew many import car customers. The new Chevrolet Corvette, a mid-engined supercar, used stock Chevrolet mechanicals to create a relatively affordable supercar. Finally, there was the Chevrolet El Camino, a midsize coupe utility for those upgrading from Holden and Ford utes.
Chrysler decided to show the benefit of their full frames by making a line of three coachbuilt Imperials, the Saoutchik Roadster, the Vignale Coupe and the Park Ward Saloon. Despite the cars' high prices, the whole project lost money. It didn't help that quality troubles had put them low in sales and in the red.
Ford, meanwhile, showed two new sports cars. The Thunderbird was a mid-engined supercar, similar to the Corvette, and the Mustang was a Taunus-based 2+2 sports car, topped by the TRS version, a Lincoln V8-powered NASCAR homologation special. The company also launched the Edsel brand, which, despite similarity to Fords, sold relatively well, and entered the diesel market with their new V8 and I6 diesels.
As street-legal cars were seen as not good enough for NASCAR any more, the series allowed carmakers not to make homologation specials and have non-street-legal parts. This made the 1957 homologation specials gain value from the dealer gates, especially in case of the Ford Mustang TRS, 1957's NASCAR winner.
Europe:
The German car market of that year was quite small, due to the war. In fact, the lost sales made NSU file for bankruptcy - the company was bought by Ford for its production facilities.
Meanwhile, in France, the small car market boomed, thanks to a scrappage scheme similar to America's 1954-5 one. However, the wartime "blacked-out" trim and saving made bigger cars a bit less popular, causing Citroen to delay the GT's market entrance and giving Peugeot financial problems.
In the UK, Lanchester and Daimler showed new cars. While they were good designs, the improper build quality was bogging them down.
The Italian car market showed substantial growth, allowing Lancia and Alfa Romeo to stay independent. Lancia showed the Monza, a smaller, V6 alternative to the Stelvio.
Meanwhile, foreign automakers started setting up shop in newly-capitalist countries, and AWZ, Skoda and FSO were getting ready for entering Western markets.
The Zaporozhetz ZAZ850, a small sedan with a 850cc engine, is released to great popularity, and as per govermental pledges, efforts are made so that demand is fullfilled.
In LeMans, all the major companies now had special LMP prototypes, with the Alfa Romeo C57 being the winner.
Asia:
In Japan, new car licenses were bought - Isuzu went into a joint venture with Citroen, making the 4CV and 6CV, Toyota got a license for the Plymouth Belvedere and Nissan began making the soon-to-be-discontinued Mercedes-Benz 190.
1958:
World events:
The French colonists and Southern Vietnamese managed to quash Vietcong forces and assume control of the entire nation by February. Still, Northern Vietnam was left devastated by war, and the South is not much better.
At the same time, the independent republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were established, and protests against communism started in the Karelian part of the USSR. Protests spread across the country, and Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia declared independence. Finally, on 10th October 1958, the highest officials of the USSR were captured and arrested, and the country was turned into the Russian Republic, with an election scheduled for 15th March 1959.
However, this caused the start of independence movements in the other non-ethnically-Russian parts of the country. While most of these protests were stopped, Ukranians, Belarussians and Tadjikistanians were still protesting by the end of the year, and ZAZ factory equipment was being moved to Niznyi Novogorod, where GAZ was located.
Meanwhile, in America, the ideas of continued segregation, import tariffs, union busting, isolationism and balancing the budget - the Patriot Party program - were getting more popular. In fact, many representatives and senators started promoting them, as Mexican and Asian outsourcing started taking US jobs.
In Europe, the economic cooperation talks continued. There were some issues - the sides were divided about accepting the former Eastern Bloc, and Arab countries wanted freedom for Algieria if the whole thing was meant to include their oil.
All of this was beneficial to GNN, which was doing 24 hour reporting on the events. The foreign events were reported on in a quite low-tech pre-satellite way - recorded on tapes and then sent by plane to the company's NY headquarters.
Seeing the need for that and the defunding of state space programs, Lockheed Martin started a department that was meant to take part in commercialization of space.
Americas:
Volvo started working on its own factory in the United States. This was big news, as it was the first time a foreign company would open their own factory, not a joint venture, in the US. Meanwhile, despite all the political developments, which made UAM think about giving a larger role to US manufacturing, VW started working on one in Mexico.
Brazil also had new developments - UAM and GM factories opened there. Ford set shop in Chile, while Mopar's Brazilian assembly kept being constructed.
Meanwhile, Jeep began making the RJ-6, a closed SUV placed in size and equipment between the CJ-5 and Studebaker truck-based "station wagons", and based on Studebaker trucks. It became a great success, placing UAM above GM in sales for 1958. In general, it was partially due to cheap Mexican manufacturing, and partially due to their emphasis on quality.
During the RJ-6's tests, UAM testers noticed that the SUV was faster around the snowed tracks than actual performance cars of the brand. This made them work on 4x4 systems for road cars.
Seeing the relative success of the other Big Four brands' diesels, GM began work on theirs.
Meanwhile, Chrysler's financial troubles kept on happening, despite the release of their new compacts.
Europe:
In the UK, the new Austin A30 and Rover P5 became sales successes in their classes, thanks to good engineering and quality. Also, Hillman released the Imp S, which,,thanks to its good handling, was a rallying success.
Lotus released the 7, another supercar, with a high-revving DOHC V8 engine. It was very fast, thanks to its light weight. TVR built a similar, but bigger, car, the 5800, using a Mercury V8. The car wasn't that fast around corners, and couldn't break straightline speed records, but was more comfortable than other mid-engined supercars, and had a 2+2 layout. It showed other makers supercar buyers want comfort, too.
The European GT market boomed - Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Bugatti and Citroen all got into the market, with Bugatti's car being the fastest 4-seater of the day.
The more plebeian segments also were doing well, and some of the new cars, the new Hotchkiss Avanta and Opel Olympia, even took their good performance to the US market. Diesels kept proliferating, with more brands offering them.
Luxury brands had some new stuff, too - Hotchkiss revealed the new 4200, meant to rival the new Rolls-Royces, Daimler reworked its entire product line, from the BMW 1200 to the Mercedes-Benz 400RS, and Rolls-Royce-Bentley showed the RR Silver Seraph and Bentley Continental, smaller I6-engined sporty sedans/coupes/convertibles.
The former Eastern Bloc cars weren't selling badly in the West, but the low prices necessary to sell them in the postcommunist world necessitated low profit margins.
Also, in Spain, SEAT started operating with the 1300, a midsize diesel wagon, and began exporting it to other European countries.
Asia:
UAM signed a joint venture agreement with Nissan, offering them licensing for some of their cars, while Nissan would sell UAM cars through their dealerships in Japan and other Asian countries.
1959:
World events:
While the Russians gave Ukraine and Belarus independence by March, the Tadjikistanian figting was turning into a war. What's worse for the Russians, nuclear bombing your own territory was viewed as a rather bad course of action, so that wasn't really an option, and the new parliament was divided as whether to continue the war.
Besides that, Armenia and Azerbaijan had their own war - since April, they were fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh. Two months later, India and Pakistan started another mountain war by fighting over Kashmir.
In September, a rebellion against British rule started in Rhodesia. However, the Brits used their new nuclear weapons against the rebels, which, after the US said they would do that in their territories, and France said the same, was a deterrent for anti-colonialists.
A month later, the US government made it legal to fire workers without a reason, which was seen as a deterrent from another wave of strikes.
Besides that, European negotiations ensued, and Eastern Bloc getting into the integration, as well as Algieria becoming independent, was starting to be the dominant roadmap.
Americas:
The change in labor law made US automakers resume the construction of factories in Mexico.
Chrysler's financial and quality troubles continued, and the company started seeking some goverment aid. However, the US government declined all appeals for a bailout. While they managed to sell Borgward to VW as unprofitable, it did nlt help the company as a whole.
The company was unable to follow new trends, which the other makers could. The Chevrolet El Camino found competitors in the Ford Ranchero and Studebaker Compostela, while the Ford Mustang was rivalled by the Chevrolet Camaro, Oldsmobile Angeles and Studebaker Sportsman.
After a few years on the market, the Packard Talladega was updated, now more daily-drivable, following the TVR-originated development on the sports car market.
Europe:
In the UK, Rover released the T5, a mid-engined 2+2 GT using the 3.7 performance version of their new V8, which had its less powerful variant, a 3.2 one, show up in the P5. Austin-Rover used its earnings to buy Triumph and Jensen.
With many new 4-stroke developments rendering DKW and Saab's 2-strokes outdated, both companies started falling intl financial insolvency.
Volvo, meanwhile, showed the new Philip, an I6/V8 luxury car, to the world. It became quite successful, and part of that success was in its 3-point seatbelts, which Volvo made sure to patent, despite the inventor's qualms.
It faced fierce competition, with the latest rivals being the new Opel Kapitan/Admiral (the latter being Opel's rebadged LaSalle 40, joined by the Diplomat, an Euro version of the LaSalle Series 50), Peugeot 504, Alfa Romeo 2700 and Lancia Flaminia.
In Italy, Ferrucio Lamborghini started working on a luxury car company that would try to outshine Delahaye, Rolls-Royce, Daimler, Mercedes-Benz and the US makers.
Eastern Bloc brands were falling into financial troubles, as their products had trouble competing against new, and even used, Western cars. While Skoda, Tatra and Russian brands weren't doing that badly, and AWZ was not far behind, Poland's FSO was in real trouble, and started unofficially seeking a buyer, with the new Syrena underperforming.
Asia:
China's people's car program was cancelled again, and the focus was moved to creating a luxury car.
Japan's goverment decided to allow free creation of automotive brands, and it quickly ensued. The first new company was Subaru, with a kei car (200), a cheap and low-quality (typical car for Japan) pickup truck - the Sambar and a licensed version of the recently-replaced Ford Anglia.
Africa:
The Egyptian goverment announced the start of its "national car" efforts, therefore prompting the start of independent African car industry
1960:
World events:
After monts of fighting, the Tadjikistani rebels finally surrendered in July, and Russia started regaining control over the area. The fighting in Kashmir remained unresolved.
However, a revolution broke out in Cuba in May, and it was important in the presidential race. While the ruling Republicans managed to somewhat appease Patriot Party voters by abolishing minimum-wage laws, the revolution was used by both opposition parties as a sign of the Republicans' weakness.
The 1960 election was a three-horse race between the Democrats, Republicans and Patriots. However, none of the parties attained a majority of electors, so after a brief constitutional crisis a second round was held in December, in which Harry F. Byrd (P) managed to beat John F. Kennedy (D). The fierce race was an opportunity for GNN, which now had enough domestic events for 24 hours of news.
Algieria was given independence as part of European Commonwealth talks, which entered the "fine legal details" stage.
Americas:
With all-new fullsize, compact, midsize and truck designs from GM, Ford and UAM, new sales records were broken, although the coffers of all brands were exhausted, and the situation benefitted the lenders to all of them.
UAM's four-wheel-drive systems in their fullsize and midsize cars, while having opened up to rather slow sales, started picking up by the end of the year, partially due to good reviews and rally performance.
Meanwhile, Mopar's troubles continued. They didn't have money to show new generations of cars for that year, and it showed - their cars looked a bit old and overstyled, compared to the sleek 1961 cars, trucks and SUVs of the Big Three.
In Brazil, GM's Brazilian wing started working on a cheap pickup truck, a car that would satisfy the developing country.
Also, Nash went bankrupt that year, and its factory in Kenosha was bought by GM.
Europe:
The new Triumph Herald/Austin A40 twins and the Hillman Husky, both equipped with FWD, shook the British compact car market, and the Austin A20 did the same in subcompacts. This, together with the Hillman Imp, started showing European automakers FWD was the way forward.
VW already had the memo. The new Type 4, a compact liftback/wagon, as well as the subcompact Polo hatchback both had front transverse FWD, and they quickly started taking the market over.
In France, Citroen showed the new 2CV and 4CV, both FWD, but they were traditional fastback sedans with longitudinal engines. Meanwhile, Peugeot started reengineering the 404 prototypes to be FWD, and Simca did the same with 1300 and Aronde ones.
In Italy, Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo merged into the AMI conglomerate, despite the new Alfa Romeo Alfetta and Lancia Stelvio supercars keeping the brands' competition. The new corporation began merger talks with Chrysler.
In the Eastern Bloc, the only companies with good fortunes were the ones in Russia, thanks to a large and booming domestic market. The others, while selling enough cars to get by, couldn't get good profit margins.
Asia:
In the newly liberalized car market of Japan, Honda and Mazda sprung to the scene, both offering new kei cars. New brands weren't having that much trouble, thanks to the booming economy.
In India, Hindustan showed the H1, an inexpensive pickup truck. It quickly entered production, and most of early ones went to the Kashmir front, as there were relatively few private buyers for such stuff in India back then.

Anterior Uveitis Market Growth, Trends and Forecast up to 2020
Uveitis is the inflammation of the uveal region of the eye, most commonly by an infection. Uvea is a group of pigmented and non pigmented tissues lying in the middle among the three layers that make the eye. Uvea again consists of three layers: iris, cilliary body and the choroid. The uvea is also known as the uveal tract in some medical circles, this tract is necessary for the nutrition of the eye and also to reduce glare of the light that enters by absorbing the light and reducing internal reflection within the eye. In addition the uvea also helps in generating the aqueous humour and in controlling the focus of the eye lens. The uvea also consists of lymphocytes and is therefore prone to respond to inflammation by developing lymphocytic infiltrates. Uveitis is therefore a condition that requires urgent response from an ophthalmologist and immediate treatment.
Anterior Uveitis mainly includes iritis, which is known as the inflammation of the anterior chamber and the iris, and iridocyclitis, which is inflammation of the iris anterior chamber and the vitreous cavity. Anterior uveitis presents itself as redness of the eyes, irregular pupils, photophobia, blurred vision, eye pain/pressure, floaters visible to the patient, headaches, iridocyclitis induced cataract/glaucoma or synechia (attachment of iris to cornea or lens). The causative factors for uveitis has not yet been confirmed, however in half of the anterior uveitis cases a correlation was observed with the presence of HLA-B27 gene, which is a type of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) that increases the probability of an individual to contract uveitis by 15%. Anterior uveitis or acute anterior uveitis is the most common form of uveitis. Uveitis is primarily found to be systemic immune based; however possible causative factors in many cases also include infections from: Brucellosis, Leptospirosis, Lyme disease, Tuberculosis, Syphilis, Toxoplasmic chorioretinitis, Toxocariasis, or ocular histoplasmosis syndrome. Besides these drug interactions like rifabutin can also cause uveitis. Basically Uveitis occurs from the failed or hyperactive ocular immune response, this results in tissue destruction and inflammation, followed by buildup of mucus in extreme cases, hence the increased pressure.
The treatment for uveitis is mainly symptom specific, with steroids and non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs ins the form of eye drops, or oral medications. Corneal ulcers if present may pose as complications hence anti-inflammatory medication is prescribed only after ruling out this disorder. Cyclopegics or ciliary muscle relaxants are administered for diagnosis or certain surgical treatment if necessary. Anti TNF agents and other anti metabolite medications may prove helpful in cases of severe uveitis, e.g. infliximab.

Certain drugs like metformin, which is generally used as anti-diabetic drug has also been found to reduce inflammation in uveitis. Recent drugs like gevokizumab have undergone trials to for uveitis without infectious origin. The treatments given vary with the causative factor of uveitis, but overall the condition usually recedes after proper care and procedures are followed. In severe adverse cases, vision loss or cataract/glaucoma may occur, such cases however occur in very rare occasions. The incidence rate is as high as one in 4500 individuals globally according to a medical journal on ocular immunology. The incidence rates in developed countries of the west are higher than the developing countries in Asia and Africa. The market for anterior uveitis is therefore restricted to North American and European region, followed by Asia, South America and Rest of the World.
Some of the companies involved in the production of uveitis related drugs include: Novartis AG, Amdipharm Mercury Company Limited, Santen pharmaceuticals, etc.

15 to Watch + 5 Tech + Power of Sports 5 103017
1. This year’s World Series between the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers got off to a strong start from an overnight ratings perspective. According to SportsBusiness Journal, Game 1 on Fox drew a 10.2 rating as the Dodgers won 3-1. That figure is lower than last year’s 12.6 that the Indians and Cubs drew, but “was the best for a World Series opener since Phillies-Yankees in 2009.” Despite a cry that games have been taking too long, Game 1 was the shortest World Series game in a quarter century. Game 2 followed up with 16.0 million viewers on Fox, with the Astros pulling out a 7-6 win in 11 innings. That number is down compared to last year, but up 13% from two years ago. Subsequent games have been packed with drama and action as the series seems likely to go the distance. Viewership numbers for the most recent games have not yet been released, but numbers are expected to be strong across two of America’s biggest markets due to the intensity and star power featured in the contests.
2. With the World Series now well underway, MLB baseball has revealed its postseason viewership numbers leading up to the championship round. According to SportsBusiness Journal, playoff games across ESPN, TBS, FS1, Fox and MLB Network averaged 4.8 million viewers – representing the league’s “best pre-Fall Classic figure since 2011 (4.9 million).” The 4.8 million average is up 13% from the 4.24 million viewers that last year’s postseason averaged. One of the biggest jumps from last year is NL viewership on TBS, which has seen a 46% increase from last year. FS1 has been the big winner thus far, as it had the honor of broadcasting the ALCS Game 7 matchup between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees. That game alone averaged 9.9 million viewers, “marking the net’s most-viewed telecast on record.” The 9.9 million average tops last year’s 9.7 million that tuned in to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs in Game 6 last year. MLB has to be happy with this news, especially considering the NFL’s struggle to keep its viewership numbers up relative to past years.
3. Colin Kaepernick is set to attend a meeting between NFL players and owners, where the two sides plan to talk about the ongoing social activism and protest issues. According to Yahoo Sports, multiple players across the league have voiced their desire to get him in their meetings with team owners and league officials, noting that “he is an important voice in their effort.” This now marks the second time “he has been invited” by members of the players’ coalition to attend a league meeting, after he declined the first offer. League officials have been open to the idea of the former NFLer joining their discussions, though it remains unclear what his exact contribution will be since he is not on a team. Kaepernick recently filed a grievance against the NFL for “allegedly conspiring to freeze him out of a job.” Protesting the national anthem all began with Kaepernick, so it will be interesting to see what – if anything – comes out of his inclusion in the meeting.
4. The San Francisco 49ers are teaming up with multiple police unions in an attempt to “ease national police-community acrimony.” According to the San Jose Mercury News, the current on-field protests by players have since “extended far beyond the field,” prompting the 49ers to work with police unions all across the Pacific Northwest. The team and police unions from San Jose, Oakland, Santa Clara, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Long Beach and Portland “plan to solicit participation from other NFL teams and police unions.” One of the key areas of focus in this new partnership is gun control, specifically to outlaw bump stocks, which the shooter in Las Vegas used to boost the killing power of his rifles. “We’re all very interested in progress, and it’s very clear that protesting has brought ample vision, and the opportunity for people to speak loudly,” said 49ers CEO Jed York. This partnership could spur a movement across the league of teams working with police unions in their respective markets. This is a great step in the right direction for the NFL.
5. This week marks the national debut of episode three of "The Power of Sports," a monthly program jointly produced by FOX Sports Southwest, Horrow Sports Ventures, Oklahoma City-based foundation Fields & Futures, and Group One Thousand One. This month, after successful forays into Oklahoma City and Indianapolis looking at public-private partnership ventures, we journey to South Florida with MLB Hall of Famer Cal Ripkin Jr. as he relives his first professional game at Miami Stadium as a Miami Oriole and tour community baseball facilities being developed by his namesake cause Ripken Baseball. We also hear about the good work his father Cal Ripken Sr. is doing with Team Cops and Kids, and go inside Up2Us, which is training everyday coaches to work with vulnerable youth. Check local FOX Sports networks listings to be a part of this truly remarkable journey.
6. The Tampa Bay Rays finally have a site picked out to build a new stadium on, but funding remains up in the air. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the proposed site in the Channel District-Ybor City area presents developers with an opportunity to “build an urban ballpark with, perhaps, waterfront views and access.” Plans and funding for the 14-acre site have yet to be determined. It still remains uncertain how much the new ballpark will cost the Rays, but it is expected to run between $500-650 million. That cost is the cost of the stadium alone, not including the millions it will take to acquire the land, build roads and parking lots, reroute sewer lines in the area and add “new exit ramps off highways or new stops on transit lines.” Sources close to the franchise note that it is unlikely that “ownership will offer to pay” for a new ballpark outright. St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman offered to build a new ballpark at a redeveloped Tropicana Field, though the team seems intent on moving elsewhere.
7. Just a year after opening, the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento has already begun to pay dividends in the community. According to the Sacramento Kings, the team’s new $1 billion arena is one of the world’s most technologically advanced and sustainable, making it a staple in the city. Since 2015, “downtown property sales have totaled nearly $885 million,” when construction first began on the Golden 1 Center, while 11 downtown properties worth nearly $360 million were sold in the past year alone. In 2017, the facility was ranked as one of the top 15 venues in the United States and in the top 40 worldwide in ticket sales, “attracting over 1.6 million attendees who spent more than $71.5 million in downtown Sacramento.” Going forward, the Kings want to build on of this momentum to spur more positive economic growth in the city. In just a few short months, the Downtown Commons development will be opening, which is expected to be busy even on non-event nights. Already a staple in the community, the Golden 1 Center continues to drive economic impact in Sacramento. Look for other cities to use this as a case to build their own state-of-the-art facilities.
8. Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will host the 2018 MLS All-Star game. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, expansion side Atlanta United FC’s success, coupled with the city’s affection for soccer, has resulted in announcement that the city, team, and stadium will be hosting the event in the coming year. “I don’t think we have to worry about selling out the stadium for the All-Star game,” commented Atlanta United Owner Arthur Blank. On top of the 2018 MLS All-Star game, the brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium is also slated to host the 2018 College Football Playoff, 2019 Super Bowl and 2020 Final Four. In this instance, Atlanta was one of four cities in consideration to win the bid. Up to 30 Atlanta United employees “went to Chicago to observe the different facets” of this year’s all-star game at Soldier Field, where the MLS squad faced off against Real Madrid. This marks yet another mega sporting event that Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta has been awarded. The city and venue will use this as a tune-up for the CFP, Super Bowl and Final Four.
9. Detroit professional sports franchises are teaming up in an attempt to bring more marquee events to the city. According to the Detroit Free Press, executives from the city’s four pro sports teams – Red Wings, Pistons, Lions, and Tigers – have formed a new partnership, the Detroit Sports Organizing Corporation, which will “identify, bid, plan and produce major sporting events in Detroit.” Some of the events that the city hopes to attract in the coming years include the NFL Draft and NBA and NHL All-Star Games. Little Caesars Arena just opened in the heart of the city and the DSOC sees the venue as a selling point in winning bids. “The cities that have been really successful in hosting those events on a regular basis have a group like this that is permanently in place so that when an opportunity comes up we’re not starting from scratch,” said Lions President Rod Wood. Detroit now joins the likes of Indianapolis, Atlanta and Phoenix as cities with permanent organizing committees, the latter of which are notorious for hosting some of the country’s biggest sporting events.
10. Charlotte is out of the running to land an MLS expansion club – at least in this round. According to the Charlotte Business Journal, the city’s first round efforts were confirmed to be “dead” by the lead investor for a local team. The city planned on building a soccer-specific stadium for a new team, one of the main criteria for cities hopeful of landing an expansion bid, that would cost $175 million, but “the combination of upcoming elections and a competing bid by Nashville dashed any remaining hopes.” The city and county government disagreed on how the stadium was going to be funded, with some supporting the use of tourism tax while others dissented. SMI President & CEO Marcus Smith leads MLS4CLT and had even “committed to pay” the $150 million fee to acquire a team if Charlotte’s bid succeeded, but it will not get to the point where that is necessary. With numerous cities vying to land an MLS expansion team, a soccer-specific stadium is a must. Funding always presents an issue though, especially for smaller markets.
11. Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long is doing more than just playing football this season, he is making a massive impact in communities around the country. According to SportsBusiness Journal, Long made a splash when he announced his plan to donating his first six game checks to fund academic scholarships in his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. Long is now expanding his charitable efforts by donating his final 10 game checks of the season “to organizations committed to balancing education inequity.” His new campaign – Pledge 10 For Tomorrow – is geared toward the three markets he has played in throughout his career: St. Louis, Boston and Philadelphia. Using social media as his platform to get fans involved, the campaign has already raised around $200,000 in just over a week. “We’re all trying to improve our communities and our country,” said Long. “I think everybody would agree equality is a goal, and a great gateway to that is an education and educational opportunities, educational equity.” A great example of a player using their status as a professional athlete to spur change in communities across the country.
12. As Amazon and Facebook continue their push to stream live sporting events around the world, a potential bid to land the English Premier League’s media rights is expected to cost more than $13 billion. According to the London Times, if either of the two web-based companies wanted to “stand any chance of winning live rights” to the EPL, they would have to pay at least $13.1 billion. The preeminent soccer league’s media rights have been hyper-inflated due to “aggressive competition between BT Sport and Sky” in the United Kingdom. Amazon currently owns the media rights to stream the NFL’s Thursday Night Football games via its Prime subscription model, though it attracted a mere 370,000 viewers for the first game streamed, “compared with 14.6 million on conventional TV, and was hit by glitches.” Sky and BT are working out a deal to pay less for the EPL’s media rights, since sport “now accounts for two-thirds of spending on content but only 8% of viewing.” Amazon and Facebook both have the capital necessary to make a competitive bid here, it just depends if either company is willing to justify such a move.
13. After a few years of unparalleled growth, Under Armour’s sales are beginning to waver. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Baltimore-based sportswear company is now considering “exiting some of its smaller sports categories as it works to stem declining sales.” Among those categories under consideration for exit are outdoor gear, fishing, and most-notably tennis, among others. Star British tennis player Andy Murray is currently represented by Under Armour, but his endorsement deal is not expected to be impacted by any potential move. Just this past year, Under Armour “recorded its first losses as a public company,” while its shares hit a record low when the “retailer reported second-quarter earnings in August.” The company’s revenue growth is expected to slow from 11-12% growth down to 9-11% growth. One of the main reasons for these results is the resurgence of Adidas, specifically in America. Now that Under Armour’s growth has plateaued, the long term arms race between them, Nike and Adidas to only continue to heat up going forward.
14. With the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is now less than a year away, significant plans are still being made for the event. According to the London Independent, FIFA President Gianni Infantino want VAR technology in place for all tournament matches. VAR technology was used during the Confederations Cup in Russia this past summer, with positive results coming out of the trial. One of the biggest fears in the sport is that a major tournament or game would ultimately be decided by a refereeing error – hence the need for VAR. “We need it. Every championship needs it,” said Infantino. “That’s being shown in leagues like Portugal and Italy at the moment.” Meanwhile in Russia, the AP reported that hosting the World Cup will cost the country “$600 million more than previously planned,” bringing the total cost up to $11.7 billion. Hidden and rising costs are commonplace for countries tasked with hosting the World Cup and Olympics, despite continual efforts to buck this trend.
15. Merely months ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, ticket sales continue to lag. According to the Wall Street Journal, safety concerns about neighboring North Korea plague the event – a primary reason for the weak sales. Organizers noted that only “about 30% of the tickets they targeted to sell worldwide, and less than 20% of the batch earmarked for South Koreans” have been purchased thus far. South Korean and IOC officials are adamant that the February Games will be “safe and secure,” but that reassurance appears to be doing little to convince people to make the trip to Asia. The “sluggish ticket sales raise questions about the IOC’s strategy of holding three consecutive Games in Asia to capture interest there, though the next two Games” – Tokyo in summer 2020 and Beijing in winter 2022 – will at least be in “larger population centers.” A recent front-page story on the Wall Street Journal, titled “The Winter Olympics Are Close, and So Is North Korea,” did little to calm any nerves about PyeongChang’s proximity to the DMZ (40 miles).
Five Top Tech
1) Amazon has continued to make their way in the steaming services arena. After it was announced that Amazon had acquired the rights to stream Thursday Night Football, many wondered about how successful the new venture would be. This week, we found out. Over the first four TNF games, Amazon compiled 7.1 Million views in over 180 countries around the world. Amazon’s Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky had this to say about the extent of the streaming success: “We’re going to continue to invest in video and increase that investment in 2018. The video business is having great results with our most important customer base, which is our Prime customers. It continues to drive better conversion of free trials, higher membership renewal rates for existing subscribers and higher overall engagement. That will always be an important part of our Prime offer, and we’ll continue to use the data that we have to make better and better decisions about where to invest our dollars in Prime Video.” Clearly, the move for Amazon in the digital streaming space has started to work. Over the remainder of the NFL season, we will see if the viewership increases. If it does, Amazon may have much more competition next season for NFL streaming rights.
2) Simon Wheatcroft, a British runner, will be competing in the New York City Marathon on November 5th. Wheatcroft, who is blind, will be wearing a vibrating device that will help him navigate the course next week.  The vibrations are called “Haptic Feedback” and is worn around his wrist similar to a watch. When asked to detail his upcoming experience, Simon Wheatcroft said: “This will be my third New York marathon, but undoubtedly my greatest challenge and most significant run to date. Technology has enabled me to strive for the impossible. I want to continue using it to push the boundaries of what I am capable of achieving — and to ensure technologies exist that can assist everybody, whether they’re running a marathon or simply walking through their home town.” Wheatcroft is an inspirational athlete who is using technology to the best of his ability in order to compete in one of the most prestigious races in the world. The NYC marathon will include other athletes using other forms of technology to help them complete the race, but Wheatcroft’s use of a Haptic Device is the first of his kind.
3) The NBA may be moving closer to having players wear technology such as wristbands during play. The move would increase the amount of data and information teams, coaches, and fans could have about players while they’re playing. An interesting idea, wearable technology could tell us all about a player’s heart rate during some of the most crucial moments of each game. Executive Vice President of Media Operation and Technology for the NBA, Steve Hellmuth, said this of the recent VR developments: “Once we have motion capture, then we actually know the hands, arms, legs, feet positioning. It’s “kind of the last piece in really allowing a computer to understand the game of basketball. This is the next best experience that we can provide them with,” he said. “You’re under the basket, you’re seeing the collisions, you’re seeing the athleticism, the grace of the players that you just can’t when watching a flat television screen.” With the NBA progressing as one of the most tech-savvy leagues in all of professional sports, it comes as no surprise that the NBA is embracing this collection of tracking data. In MLB, teams and fans have a large amount of access to a variety of on-field measurable stats, and it has only raised interest for more data.
4) Wearable technology continues to make its way into MLB. Garmin has released the “Impact Bat Swing Sensor” that will relay data and information to any player that uses the application. The sensor is a small, watch-like device that fits onto the knob of the bat. Similar to a Zepp sensor, Garmin has decided to try its hand at a new piece of baseball technology. Garmin’s Vice President of World Sales Dan Bartel said: “Garmin has seen great success with our other sports products, like the golf swing sensor, so the addition of the Impact bat swing sensor to the performance training market seemed like a natural fit. Whether playing baseball or softball, or coaching players, the on-device display and auditory cues on the Impact bat swing sensor allow batters to quickly make adjustments so come game time they can step up to the plate with confidence.” While the product is useful, it is a direct copy of Zepp sensor technology. Unless there is a stark difference in price, it doesn’t seem like this product will gain much headway on the market. Time will tell, but Garmin is entering this field very late compared to its main competitor.
5) The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are creating augmented reality experiences for their fans starting next season. The transition began in late September this last season, where Coca Cola handed out interactive cards on which fans could download the BallPark App, and see the card display an animation. Coca-Cola’s Marketing Director for Sports Entertainment had this to say about their new MLB partnerships: We were one of the first partners to do something with Major League Baseball on this, but the team loves this because app downloads were up by 66 percent when we did this activity. That’s a major focus for the team, for Major League Baseball, and a win for us.” The advent of this form of technology could help attract fans who may not be pleased with baseball’s relatively slow pace.  With more interactive features, fans that come to the ballpark could have something else to watch along with the game and stay engaged throughout. Soon, we may see more and more MLB teams adopt this technology in an effort to add to their fan experience.
Power of Sports 5
1. Microsoft Partnering With NFL Stars For Charity Campaign. As part of their “Create Change” campaign, Microsoft has begun backing the charitable organizations of five NFL players. Von Miller, Russell Wilson, Martellus Bennett, Greg Olsen, and Richard Sherman have each started their own charitable organization since entering the league, and this week each player agreed to partner with Microsoft in an effort to spread awareness and raise additional funding for their cause. Under the agreement, Microsoft will be providing each organization with Surface tablets to help increase the efficiency of their work. Additionally, the company will be making a charitable donation to each players’ foundation. Microsoft has also produced videos of each player discussing their foundation and why it is important to them. The videos were debuted this week as part of a contest that Microsoft is running for the Super Bowl, in which fans are encouraged to submit stories of how they have created positive change in their community. The five winners, selected by Microsoft’s NFL partners, will each receive a trip for two to Super Bowl LII.
2. Olympian April Ross Encouraging Schools to Host Match for Breast Cancer Awareness. Professional beach volleyball player April Ross, alongside the Side-Out Foundation, is encouraging high school and college volleyball programs to host a Dig Pink event to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. Ross, whose mother Margie battled breast cancer for more than 15 years, has met with multiple college teams over the last year to speak to them about breast cancer awareness and encourage them to support the Dig Pink initiative. DePaul University, one of the schools that Ross was able to visit after her AVP tour stop in Chicago, has been hosting the event annually since 2009 and has been one of the foundation’s biggest supporters over the last eight years. The Side-Out Foundation was founded in 2005 by Rick Dunetz. Through Dig Pink matches and fundraising events across the country, the foundation has been able to raise more than $12 million dollars for breast cancer research and clinical trials. The foundation’s goal is to eventually have every high school and college program host at least one Dig Pink event during the month of October, which is recognized nationwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
3. NYCFC and City of New York Open Ten New Soccer Fields Across the City. As part of the New York City Soccer Initiative launched last year by Mayor Bill de Blasio, members of New York City Football Club were present at the openings of ten new soccer pitches across the city this week to cut the ribbon and speak on behalf of the initiative. The New York City Soccer Initiative is being led by NYCFC, the U.S. Soccer Federation, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance NYC, Adidas, and Etihad Airways. The initiative plans to to build and maintain 50 mini-soccer pitches in underserved neighborhoods across the five boroughs of New York over the next five years. Their goal is to expand after school programming for thousands of New York City youth and ensure that New Yorkers of all ages can work, learn, and play in safe neighborhoods.
4. Captain of the Rwandan Cricket Team Teaching the Sport to Young Refugees. Mary Maina, captain of the Rwandan women’s cricket team, has begun teaching a one-hour cricket class for a group of around 200 children refugees at the Mahama Refugee Camp in southeastern Rwanda. The camp is home to approximately 55,000 people, 51 percent of whom are children. The class was started in an effort to help the children forget about the trauma and issues that they have been forced to escape from, while also allowing them to learn a new sport that most of them have never been exposed to in the past. The program was started by the Cricket Builds Hope foundation, a charitable organization focused on delivering social programs for children with an emphasis on the empowerment of young females. The foundation believes that this first class is just the tip of the iceberg for what the organization will be able to achieve, and hopes to spread the program across the country and eventually across the rest of Africa.
5. San Francisco 49ers Partner with Local Police Unions. The San Francisco 49ers have joined together with several major police unions to sign the “Pledge for a More Understanding and Safer America.” The 49ers are contributing $500,000 to the campaign, which aims to improve police and community relationships. The pledge also advocates for legislation banning bump stocks, armor-piercing bullets, and gun silencers, accessories that have been facing heavy scrutiny after the recent shooting in Las Vegas. The 49ers will invite other NFL franchises and police unions to join them in their effort to build bridges of trust and communication between the community and their local police force. Thus far, unions representing the police in Oakland, Sacramento, Portland, Long Beach, Los Angeles, and San Jose have all agreed to sign the pledge.

Lone Star Round Up – A Hot Rodder’s Shangri-La
When the Lonestar Round-Up, sponsored by The Kontinentals Car Club, hits Austin, TX in early April each year it’s like the whole dang town has turned into a cool car Shangri-La. The very air vibrates with sweet exhaust notes from engines housed in pre-1964 American automobiles and the Americana music that Austin, The Live Music Capital of the World, is famous for. April 2017’s Round-Up at the Travis County Expo Center showcased over 1800 cars, with entries from across the globe, an untallied as of press time but very large number of international spectators, and a parking lot full of non-entrant vehicles that would still do any weekend cruise night proud.
Sixteen years ago on a muggy Texas April weekend Austin car club The Kontinentals sponsored the first Lonestar Round-Up on a football field in central Austin. The only rule was that cars had to be built in America in 1963 or earlier. All 88 fit on the field handily, although torquey tires and turf didn’t always interact as smoothly as they might have.
The second and third Round-Ups were held in East Austin on the grass and under the trees of the lovely Fiesta Gardens alongside the impoundment of the Colorado River that Austin calls Ladybird Lake. At first all of the cars were still shiny. Austin guitarslinger Jimmie Vaughn’s ‘63 Riviera held a place of honor. ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons could be seen wandering about in beard and nubby skullcap, accompanying customs like Cadzilla, Eliminator, and Copperhed.
The fourth through seventh Round-Ups expanded from Fiesta Gardens to take up all of Festival Beach. T-shirts bearing the HAMB (Hokey-Ass-Message-Board, an Austin-based clearing house for all things traditional hot rod) logo became popular. Vendors and booths included a wide variety of kool Kustom culture, including both of Austin’s female roller derby leagues. The Kontinentals painted almost all of their cars semi-gloss black and gave them red wheels. In a show of road warrior pride, entrants from further parts left the well-earned road grime on their vehicles. The LSRU world started to get a little grittier.
By 2008, Festival Beach could no longer contain the Round-Up, so it moved to the Travis County Expo Center, home of The Austin Rodeo and Republic of Texas Motorcycle Rally. Show cars, like Aaron Grote’s 59 Plymouth bubbletop Atomic Punk, Pete Chapouris’ California Kid, Jake Jacob’s Yellow Coupe, Mike Young’s Exotica, more Jimmy Vaughn owned and Gary Howard built customs, and Kontinental Jefe Steve Wertheimer’s Jim Bruns built Black Dahlia took over the hill at the Round-Up’s main entrance.
The weekend officially begins to the north and east in Taylor, TX, with the Thursday night Meatheads’ Barbecue (also sponsored by The Thunderbolts and host club The Kontinentals) where a couple of cows and a dozen pigs give it all up for your dining pleasure.
Friday’s early risers can meet south of town in Oak Hill at 7:45 AM to receive maps to the Garage Crawl.  This year instead of hitting the usual suspects like the Austin Speed Shop, Murpho’s, or Gus’ Garage, they toured private collections.  The crawl always ends up in central Austin at the Dell Children’s Hospital, where the kids receive gifts and a chance to get up close and personal with some very fine rides.
The Round-Up itself begins Friday at the Travis County Expo Center, and includes not just cars but a swap meet, mini bike races on dirt, constant music from classic acts like bona fide rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson, baritone voiced guitar madman Junior Brown, 80’s new wave road warriors The Woggles, garage rockers Ugly Beats or the latest in rock en Español from Mexico City, Jenny & The Mexicats.  The crowds provide the best people watching of the year, as attendees don their gladdest retro slicked up piled high custom pin-up kar klub glad rags and strut about with Texas pride.
On Friday night Congress Avenue takes on all comers as it does its imitation of the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise. The spectacle of Round-Up rods and whatever locals feel worthy of showing off inches along under the flashing lights of ever vigilant police cruisers.  North Carolina’s hillbilly grunge band Southern Culture on the Skids performs its annual multi night residency at Kontinentals clubhouse and namesake The Continental Club.  Many will swear that it just isn’t the Round Up without the sweet taste of ‘nanner pudding doled out by the band’s dollfaced singer Mary Huff.
South of town, The Austin Speed Shop parties both nights, showcasing its latest projects, rockin’ bands like the re-located from Los Angeles Paladins, and often free promotional alcohol (don’t forget to tip your server).   North on Burnet, Top Notch drive-in burger joint features music, vintage hotrod films, charcoal burgers and thick shakes along with its vintage vehicles.
Sunday starts with the Slow Ride to The Oasis on Lake Travis, famous for its spectacular sunset views, and ends west of town at Mercury Charlie’s Hot Rods & Honeys with more music, more cars and more overall Austin hip wonderfulness before one has to bid a fond adieu.  For a lot of us, it’s the best week of the year, and packed into just four days.
One of this year’s standouts was a chopped and stretched long lean 59 Cadillac, resplendent in a mile deep purplish hue. Probably the big star of the show, though, was 2016’s Ridler Award winning 39 Olds convertible coupe built by Customs and Hot Rods of Andice, Texas and owned by Billy Thomas of Corpus Christi. It’s been said many times before, but seeing a Ridler winner in person gives you a much deeper understanding of all of the work put into these cars and the exquisite beauty that results. A fellow could about taste the curves and smooth metalwork of Thomas’ deserving award winner. But you also couldn’t escape the aftertaste of sweat from all of the effort the crew at Customs and Hot Rods put in.
Down the hill and deep into the display, last year’s big noise (and smoke) came from an early show appearance by the Corns family’s radial-airplane-engined 39 Plymouth truck. The aviation themed bare metal truck is such an amazing creation that it ended up gracing the cover of the October 2016 HOT ROD.
Rounds of Chicken Shit Bingo, a local tradition, can be found throughout the weekend.
Down the hill and even farther into The Round-Up’s inner reaches, back in the Early Oughts, the rat rod movement blossomed in distressed metal, road-signs and license plate body panels, and rust. TV stars and recent Roadkill nemeses Gas Monkey were early proponents, offering up slammed sedans with slit rear windows and sectioned so skinny the driver sat looking out through a hole in the roof. Others added a Texas touch with cowskulls and horns, rotting cowboy boots with (probably) fake femurs as gearshifts, and living cacti on rooftop gardens. These days there are still some tetanus traps sporting crosscut saw visors and sharp metal mohawks, but the cognoscenti have proclaimed such things as officially uncool.
Texas is a haven for trucks, with a calendar full of Truck Months. Every year Fords and Chevys are represented well and thoroughly. This year featured a few more Internationals along with voluptuous Studebaker TranStars. Last year’s revelation was cab-over-engine workhorses. The trick here was that most everybody had moved the engine behind the cab, so there would be room for big Cummins diesels, etc.  Some COEs even hauled their own hotrods, setting up a beauty contest between hauler and haul-ee.
Bobbers, or “Rudy Trucks,” so named after the archetypal 35 Ford created in 2002 by Rudy Rodriguez of California’s Fullerton Fabrication, are still popular. When a builder gets the proportions right on a chopped thirties pickup cab lowered onto a stepped frame and made useful with a special tailored bed, the appeal is undeniable.
This year diesels were king. Big and old trucks that once upon a time pulled semi trailers, wildly plumbed dual turbo rat rods, a low mean black 63 Cadillac with so many louvers in the hood it was practically lace all housed oilburners.  Hotrodded stepvans and schoolbuses are showing up in larger numbers. There was even a huge red art deco bus that was probably branded with a name that ended in cruiser or liner carefully navigating the show’s parking lot.
The variety of vehicles for sale in this year’s car corral was also impressive. Folks who wanted to purchase a turnkey testament to their coolness could find something to make them happy, but so could somebody looking for a new project. Willys gasser bodies, arguably close to finished rat rods, a couple of sweet El Caminos, a Rambler station wagon sporting oversized Foose wheels, even a multi colored truck based custom straight out of the 80s (picture the inspiration for Chevy’s SSR) could be had for the right amount of cash.
As always, there were plenty of Model T’s, from buckets to track, Model A’s, deuces, tri-fives, fifties Fords and Chevy trucks.  Austin’s Lone Star Round Up remains a haven for all 63 and earlier American built cars.  And if you are into that sort of thing, it’s also early enough in the season to get a glimpse into some of the newer trends in the hot rod universe.
