Orijen is one of two brands created by Champion Pet Foods, which originated in Canada. It was founded by Reinhard Muhlenfeld in 1985.

Recalls and Lawsuits

Taste of the Wild

Diamond Pet Food has had several recalls, though TotW has only had a single incident in May of 2012.

The recall was for salmonella contamination at the plant in South Carolina. Dry dog food was the only one with contamination issues.

The production codes needed to be checked to verify if the food had salmonella issues. Food with codes having a 2 or 3 in the 9th space and an X in the next space were part of the recall.

Corrections to the manufacturing plants were successful in ensuring future issues did not arise.

However, there are two lawsuits filed against Diamond Pet Food specifically around the TotW brand.

Note that anybody can file a lawsuit and they are not evidence of guilt until ruled so by a judge

The two lawsuits are similar in nature, the first one was in August 2018 and the second one was filed in February 2019. The 2018 suit accuses TotW of food contamination in the following three varieties:

Both lawsuits allege the foods are contaminated with pesticides, heavy metal (arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium), acrylamide, and BPA.

Orijen

Orijen has not had any recalls in the United States.

Coincidentally, Orijen also had a lawsuit for similar contamination claims as TotW. This lawsuit was filed in March of 2018 but was later dismissed in February of 2019.

TotW’s lawsuits may end the same way.

These two brands have many similarities which made them fun to compare.

They both fashion their food on the more primal needs of our dogs, they both are grain free, and both brands are protein focused.

In addition to the philosophies behind their food they both outline, in the guaranteed analysis section, the Omega-6 & 3 fatty acid content.

Orijen

Orijen designed their recipes to be 85% prime animal protein, 15% fruit and vegetables, and 0% grains and potatoes.

All of their foods are packed with superfoods like pumpkin, kale, and spinach.

Also, Orijen has included pumpkin and sunflower seeds in their recipes. They use a variety of beans and lentils to make up for the lack of traditional grains and potatoes.

Their guaranteed analysis reflects 38% minimum protein, which is substantially higher than most dog foods, including TotW. Another thing Orijen does that many other dog food companies shy away from is use organ meat in their foods.

Organ meats may sound icky, but they are healthy and nutritious.

The aspect of this food I don’t like is the lack of traditional carbohydrates. Many dogs need grains and easily digestible potatoes.

Taste of the Wild

TotW includes potatoes and lentils in their foods to make up for the lack of grains. They have also included potato and pea flour in place of wheat or rice flours.

The first two ingredients in their best sellers are high-quality animal proteins, and though it does have some fruits and vegetables it’s nothing compared to Orijen’s list of superfoods.

Price and Value

This was an easy pick.

Their food is in line with their goals of being of an excellent dog food at a low price. The average cost per pound for TotW is under two dollars while the average cost per pound for Orijen is over four dollars!

TotW is available in most pet food retail stores, both in person and online.

They are even found in some hardware stores, doggy daycares, specialty grocery stores, and vet clinics.

Orijen has similar availability in pet stores, but they cannot be found in grocery or hardware stores, only in pet-focused retail locations or online.

And even then, not at as many online retailers.

Almost a tie, but because I had to choose (Daisy hasn’t learned how to write or speak English yet), Orijen wins by a small margin.

I believe it was the unique kinds of proteins that gave Orijen that extra push.

The X Factor

  Winner: Orijen   

Orijen offers specially formulated recipes for seniors, puppies, and a weight management variety.

Also, Orijen’s fatty acid content is significantly higher than most dog foods.

As an added bonus, they have added chondroitin and glucosamine into their recipes!

Overall

  Winner: Taste of the Wild   

Orijen is in a class all of its own. With the high-end ingredients, the extreme levels of protein, and the abundance of superfoods, it’s hard to beat.

If you can afford to give your pupper a tiara, then Orijen is priced right for you

But like we mentioned before, ingredients aren’t everything.

Though Orijen can justify the price, it does make it cost prohibitive to the majority of dog owners. Especially if you own multiple dogs!

Taste of the Wild is a reasonably priced dog food and has the added benefit of being easy to find.

TotW is a quality dog food with an appropriate protein content that’s more suited to dogs with an average or activity level.

However, if your dog needs a high protein diet, such as working, sporting, or extremely athletic dogs, Orijen would be the best option.

Also, if your dog would benefit from the higher fatty acid, chondroitin, and glucosamine levels, such as dogs with arthritis or extremely active dogs, then Orijen would also be the better option.

The Union market boys manage to keep pretty well supplied with fresh vegetables.

There will be preaching tonight and every night this week at the school house, South Austin.

New gatherers have a hard time of it picking up items of interest. Very little of a sensational character is taking place.

Yesterday T. J. Leonard received judgment against John Breckner, in the county court, for $100, for damages received from a dog bite.

The Colorado made another rise yesterday, and, from the color of the water, it was coming down from the neighborhood of the Red Fork.

The new building for Washington steam fire engine company No. 1, is nearing completion. It will be a handsome and convenient structure..

Yesterday the grand jury ordered Mary Preston (col.) released from the county jail, where she has been confined for several weeks charged with grand larceny.

If all the streets in Austin, and more especially the Avenue and Pecan, were to be graveled as the lower part of the Avenue now is, it would prove of infinite good during the winter months. Why can’t it be done?

The game of base ball which was played yesterday afternoon on the graded school grounds, between the high school club and the club from Prof. Bickler’s school, resulted in favor of the high school. Score-nine to eleven.

BADLY CUT

Last night about 10 o’clock Ed Sheehan struck Tom Bruckman, the young man who keeps the lunch stand at the Union depot, in the face with a stone. According to Mr. Bruckman’s statement, a number of men during train time stand around his lunch counter and occasionally help themselves to fruit or anything else from the counter that they see fit to take.  

Sheehan has been among this number, and some time ago he and Bruckman quarreled about the matter, but nothing more was thought of it until last night about 10 o’clock, when Bruckman, who was standing on the corner of Fourth and Lavaca streets, was approached by Sheehan and struck in the face with a heavy stone, which cut a large hole through the cheek and knocked out several teeth. Sheehan then threw again, this time striking Bruckman on the same side of the head, cutting another gash higher up and close to the ear.

Bruckman ran down the railroad to where Officer Follwell was standing, and informed him of the occurrence. The officer found Sheehan shortly afterward and arrested him. Bruckman went and armed himself after notifying the officer, and started out to look for Sheehan, and he was also arrested by Officer Follwell for carrying a pistol.

THE FIRST GERMAN. GOOD MUSIC, MERRY DANCING AND A GOOD TIME GENERALLY

The Austin German club, inaugurated the season of 1886-87, last evening in fine style at Washington fire company’s hall. To delightful music, furnished by Prof. Herzog’s orchestra, the company danced with feet that knew no weariness. Some of the boys donned their claw-hammer coast for the first time, but they were scarcely more than bashful at first and that even wore off and they appeared as easy and graceful as, and really more good looking than, their more inured rivals.

A few of the gentler fair made their debut in costumes en train, which they handled with a grace that practice alone can produce. The company was further graced and honored by the presence of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Daniel, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Drake, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner Ruggles, Mr. Geo. A. Brush and Miss Laura Brush. Among those who took part in the dancing were Miss Sallie Sea right, who glided over the floor arrayed in a rich costume of pink surah silk en train, beaded tulle front and ribbon streamers, basque, cut decollate, with lace. She was accompanied by Mr. David Harrell.

Miss Carothers wore a magnificent suit of ashes of rose satin, with train of pink embossed plush; pink ribbons and point applique lace. Accompanied by Mr. Will Anderson.

Miss Pope led the german with Mr. Morris. She was dressed in light blue satin, lace front and silk brocade sash.

Miss Eva Saylor (escorted by Mr. Jeff Brown) wore pink satin with Oriental lace; sleeveless basque.

Miss Adele Steiner wore a petticoat of blue crepe, with basque and demitrain of crimson brocaded silk. Irish point lace. She was accompanied by Mr. Geo. Mc Carty.

Miss Maggie Bowers, was becoming, arrayed in white French nainsook, Swiss flouncing and embroidery with pink ribbon. Escorted by Mr. Peyton Brown.

Miss Alice Denton and Mr. Weeks. Miss Denton wore pink Bengaline, Oriental lace and pink ribbons.

Mrs. Ruggles wore a train dress of muil with Oriental lace trimming.

Miss Ellen Sneed wore a suit of blue, with Oriental lace basque and overskirt. Escorted by Mr. Shepard.

Mr. Armstrong was happy in the company of Miss Derle Smith; she was dressed in white silk and duchess lace with ruby ornaments.

Miss Bessie Smith looked a duchess, in a costume of cardinal crepe du chene, Oriental lace and diamonds. Mr. Patrick being the fortunate escort.

Miss Howard wore white cashmere with Oriental lace, and corsage bouquet of poppies. She was accompanied by Mr. Williams.

Miss Tullie Folts (escorted by Mr. Childers) wore blue satin and beaded lace, and was pretty as a picture.

Miss Lily Bremond was escorted by Dr. Steiner. She wore white crepe du chene with valenclenes lace and flouncings, diamond ornaments.

Miss Boardman wore cream satin entrain, hand embroidered front with oriental lace. Escorted by Mr. Maxey.

Miss Miller was becomingly dressed in a pretty costume of pearl brocaded silk with valenclenes lace. Accompanied by Mr. Parker.

The first german was in every way a great success, and the season bids fair to be one of the brightest ever spent in Austin society circles.

The Finnish people have known all about sauna benefits for years, and the rest of the world is finally starting to catch on!

After spending time in Finland, daily sauna use is a regular part of my routine, and years of scientific research back this practice.

What Is a Sauna?

Many traditional cultures used heat therapies for healing for thousands of years, dating back to the Mayans (2000 BC), and ancient Greecians and Romans (300 BC). Nowadays, sauna use is engrained in many cultures, from the Finnish saunas to the Swedish bastu, the Russian banyas, the Korean jjimjilbangs, and the Japanese sento.

The term “sauna” can refer to any type of small or large room or device designed to help the user experience dry heat or wet heat (steam). There are now also infrared (far and near) saunas that emit infrared light and claim to heat the body more effectively.

Types of Saunas

There are multiple types of saunas, including:

traditional dry saunas, which can be heated with fire, hot stones, gas, or electricity (popular in Scandinavian or Finnish culture)

steam saunas, where you can generate steam by applying water on the heating element (often found in spas and gyms)

infrared saunas, which use invisible light within certain frequencies to penetrate and heat up the body’s tissues directly (smaller home units are available)

Infrared saunas can further be broken down in to 3 types:

near infrared saunas

far infrared saunas (often abbreviated FIR)

full spectrum infrared saunas

Infrared Sauna vs Traditional Sauna

The infrared sauna is a more recent invention as it can only operate with electricity. In the 1800s, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg from Michigan put together what he called an “electric light bath” from light bulbs, right around the time that light bulbs (which emitted a lot of near infrared light) were invented.

After he presented his invention at Chicago World Fair, a German entrepreneur saw the device, replicated the design and sold it all over the globe because of its powerful healing abilities. It was said that this device cured the gout for the King of England!

How Infrared Saunas Work

While traditional saunas heat the air to heat the body, infrared saunas use invisible light just below red light frequencies to penetrate and heat up the tissues directly, to a depth of up to 1.5 inches into the skin. Although our eyes can’t see it, we can feel it as gentle, radiant heat.

The mechanism by which infrared saunas work is called photobiomodulation … a big fancy word meaning a form of therapy that utilizes light.

What Is Photobiomodulation?

According to quantum physics, molecules can be excited by specific light frequencies. (The higher frequency the light is, the more energy it carries.) The “excited” molecule then goes through a process to release the energy and return to its normal state, typically in the form of light at a lower frequency.

You can observe this process happening everyday inside of a fluorescent lamp, when a UV light excites chemicals coating the inside of the bulbs to emit visible light.

Photobiomodulation is when living organisms utilize this process. This is where the distinction between near and far infrared comes in:

Near Infrared Saunas

Higher frequency red light and near infrared light (0.8 – 1.5 µm) can excite energy-producing enzymes in the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell. This increases mitochondria function and initiates many healing processes inside the cells, including increasing cellular energy (ATP) production, reducing oxidative stress, and reducing inflammation. (This article discusses more about the specific benefits of near infrared.)

Far Infrared Saunas

While scientists are still trying to understand why the far infrared spectrum has so many health benefits, this light spectrum has more clinical studies supporting its benefits over other infrared bands.

Rather than exciting mitochondria enzymes, far-infrared light (5.6–1000 µm) affects the health of the cells by exciting water molecules. Aside from producing heat, far infrared may also increase mitochondria function by structuring the water molecules that surround the mitochondria.

Which Sauna Is Best?

The research is still out on this. Most of the studies are done on traditional saunas and seem to indicate the heat is the main mechanism of benefit. At the same time, many companies claim that infrared saunas have additional benefits, though we’re still waiting on studies to prove this. Infrared saunas are often much less expensive and easier to fit into a home environment, making them a more reasonable option for most of us.

The Health Benefits of Saunas

So, why would one swelter in a sauna? I find it pleasant but not everyone has the same level of heat tolerance (more on that below). It turns out heat and sweating alone have many positive health benefits. According to Dr. Rhonda Patrick, the benefits of heat conditioning in a sauna include:

1. Heart Health & Blood Pressure

A review of all of the published scientific literature about saunas shows a strong trend of coronary benefits, most notably in their ability to help normalize blood pressure and reduce the chance of congestive heart failure. In fact, a Harvard review of data showed a potential 40+% reduction in heart attack risk from using a sauna 4-7 times per week. And the benefit went up with increased use. In other words, the study showed that the more often and the longer amount of time a person uses a sauna, the more benefit and on average, the longer that person lives.

Heat conditioning or sauna use resembles cardiovascular exercise in many ways, because the cardiovascular system has to work harder to eliminate the heat. Not only does it increase blood flow, sweating, and cardiovascular fitness, but it also leads to a post-exercise euphoria where you feel relaxed, happy, and experience less pain.

2. Sweating and Detoxification

An increase in circulation and sweating can aid in detoxification, and in this way sauna therapy helps the body’s natural process of detoxification through sweating.

There is also some evidence that sweating might help reduce heavy metals in the body. A systematic review in 2012 found that toxic heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury are found in sweats of people who are exposed to these harmful metals. In a case report, they found that mercury levels normalized with repeated sauna treatments. Again, this benefit is likely due to the sweating and not any special mechanism of the sauna itself.

3. Pain Relief and Muscle Recovery

Saunas increase heat shock proteins, antioxidant enzymes, and stimulate cellular cleanup (autophagy), which can help our cells function like new. In aging mice, an increase in heat shock proteins help delay aging and improves cognitive function.

Sauna bathing can also increase several anti-aging hormones including human growth hormones and the insulin-growth factor 1. IGF-1, in particular, can really help with injury healing.

Several heat-shock proteins can even help with increasing muscle mass, even without weight training. Through photobiomodulation, infrared therapy has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect that can accelerate injury healing.

This is the reason that many people, including Lady Gaga, turn to saunas for pain relief.

4. Mood and Cognitive Function

Just as when you go for a run, sauna use increases endorphins (the happiness hormone) and opiods (the body’s natural pain reliever), as well as a molecule called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the brain.

BDNF stimulates neurogenesis (the growth of new neuronal cells) in the brain and protects new neurons from damage. Improving BDNF levels is therefore important for cognitive function. In addition, low or abnormal levels of BDNF may be a cause of several mental and psychiatric diseases.

Infrared saunas can also reduce stress by re-balancing the stress response axis. It can help lower cortisol, and thus helps with stress-related health problems. Saunas also improve the neurotransmitter called norepinephrine, which can help improve cognitive performance.

5. Weight Loss and Metabolic Health

Contrary to popular claims, heat and sauna use do not directly burn fat or kill fat cells. However, saunas can help improve insulin sensitivity, increase lean muscles, and reduce fat by changing the hormonal environment. In addition, the saunas also reduce inflammation. Therefore, sauna therapies can prevent obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

A Japanese study found that two weeks of sauna therapy increased appetite and food intake in people of a healthy weight. However, in overweight people, far infrared sauna usage together with a low-calorie diet resulted in significant weight and body fat loss. While this study did not compare the fat loss with a group that did not use the sauna, the reduction in body fat (4.5%) in about two week’s time is considered very fast.

6. Help for Inflammation

As mentioned above, sauna use may increase the presence of heat shock proteins, which are anti-inflammatory. For this reason, saunas may help lower chronic inflammation. Since inflammation is connected to almost every major disease, this is a big deal!

Study participants who used saunas regularly shower lower levels of oxidative stress, even within two weeks! Another study found that men who used the sauna 4-7 times a week had 32% lower levels of c-reactive protein (CRP).

7. Sleep

According to Dr. Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist with a board certification in sleep medicine, the steep drop in body temperature at night is one of the circadian cues that the body takes that it is time to sleep. This explains why a warm bath or a shower before bed can improve sleep quality. Because the sauna typically heats the body up much hotter than a warm shower, it can take the body a few hours to cool down for bed. In order to improve your sleep quality, consider using a sauna session in the afternoon or before dinner in order to allow the body to cool down by bedtime.

A Japanese study also found that far-infrared ray exposure improved sleep quality in both rats and an insomniac human subject.

8. Skin Health

In order to eliminate heat, your body increases blood flow to the skin. In addition, the skin adapts to this process, making it healthier. A German study found that the skin of regular saunas users could better hold moisture and maintain a healthy skin pH. In addition, these sauna users had less sebum on their foreheads, suggesting that they were less likely to get acne.

Skin problems like eczema and psoriasis involves both inflammation and a vulnerability of the skin barrier. By helping both with strengthening the skin barrier and reducing overall inflammation, infrared sauna, if tolerated, can really help with these skin issues. (If sweat significantly irritates the rash, then you may want to protect the rashes with a eczema-friendly lotion and shower right after the sauna.)

Risks & Cautions for Sauna Use

Though sauna use is generally considered safe, anyone considering sauna use should absolutely check with a doctor or medical professional first, as some people (including Tim Ferriss) have genetic conditions that can lead to overheating and health problems from sauna use.

Common sense cautions also include avoiding direct contact with heating elements to avoid burns, not using a sauna for more than the recommended amount of time, or using a sauna after alcohol use or exercise.

Anyone new to sauna use should start off gently at a lower temperature and shorter periods, and gradually increase the temperature and duration of sauna use. Take breaks or finish if you don’t feel well. Remember to hydrate and replace electrolytes accordingly during and after your sauna session.

Safe for Pregnancy?

While there are concerns that heat exposure may harm babies in utero, studies show that saunas typically do not pose problems in healthy pregnancies. I certainly saw many pregnant moms in saunas in Finland, but because every pregnancy is different, it is best to check with your doctor or midwife first.

How to Get the Benefits of a Sauna

Here’s the thing … saunas are pricey and they aren’t for everyone. After researching the health benefits, it became a priority for us to make room in the budget for a sauna, but it certainly isn’t a small decision!

Our local gym had a sauna, but we realized that by the time we paid for a gym membership for my husband and I (that included childcare), we could buy much of the equipment we’d be using instead over the course of a couple of years. So instead of going to the gym for sauna use and working out there, we now have a low-EMF infrared sauna in our home and have purchased workout equipment we actually use (kettlebells, free weights, pull up bar, etc.).

Focus on the Heat

Since the most beneficial part of the sauna is the heat itself, we worked up to spending as much as half an hour in it at one time. The sauna is super relaxing and it has been beneficial for my skin as well! I jokingly call the sauna my “quiet box” and often listen to podcasts while I’m in there. I enjoy it so much, that I’ve even recorded podcasts in it!

There are several companies that offer at-home infrared saunas:

Clearlight: Offers full-spectrum, low-EMF saunas. They have various models from a 1-person up to custom whole room saunas. (Call them and let you know I referred you and you should get a discount).

Sunlighten: Another trusted name in infrared saunas with a variety of options. They have a portable one-person sauna (The Solo)  that is much less expensive than wooden models and easier to store. If I feel myself getting sick I immediately spend an hour in there to induce fever.

Healthmate: I’ve tried their sauna at a friend’s house and it seemed comparable and reached about 160 degrees. I haven’t been able to do further testing on it and they are not comfortable with me affiliate linking to them unless they are my only recommendation so I don’t have a referral or discount link for them to share.

How Often Should You Sauna (& for How Long)?

Many Finnish people use the sauna daily, so saunas are generally safe to use on a daily basis for healthy people.

Most of the research agrees that as long as a person is healthy and can tolerate saunas, regular use can be beneficial. In studies, 4-7 sauna sessions per week (lasting at least 20 minutes) showed the biggest results in all of the above categories.

Airposts and their Stamps (1921)

This article is probably one of the first airmail articles, certainly of any length, to be published in a philatelic journal. It was first published in Stamp Collectors' Fortnightly (January, 1921) from a paper read by Major RS Archer, MC, as his Presidential Address before the Liverpool Junior Philatelic Society, October 11th, 1920.

The Wabash Railway Company in U.S.A. has recently taken off its fast mail train between Toledo and St. Louis, because it could not compete with its rival in the air. To one who has closely followed the rapid development of the aerial mail, this announcement causes little surprise. The increase in speed of the aeroplane over the train would in itself not affect the rail services, but this, added to the fact that the air line in question has maintained an efficiency of 92 percent for more than twelve months, has demonstrated the reliability of the aeroplane service. All the experiments prove that the universal use of the aeroplane for mail-carrying purposes is coming, and almost daily the papers chronicle the institution of new air lines. The collection of aerial post stamps thus becomes imperative to the up-to-date philatelist. One prophesies the not-far-distant date when the majority of the new stamps, certainly European, occupying the pages of our albums, till be those used in connection with the post conveyed by petrol-driven Mercuries. Tonight, time will only permit a short flight through the intensely fascinating history of the air mail, whilst I pilot you amongst the forty odd stamps which the past three and a half years have brought forth in this connection. The experience gained in the past War has, of course, been an invaluable help in the development of air services, and, curiously enough it was in wartime that the first airpost was instituted. It was necessary, during the Siege of Paris in 1870, to find a means of communication with the outer world, and, for this purpose, a balloon post was brought into being. The first ascent was made on 23rd September, 1870, and the services continued in almost daily use for four months, during which period 68 balloons were despatched, 60 landing on French or neutral territory, five being captured by the Germans, and three being lost at sea. Envelopes despatched in this manner give no indication of their mode of conveyance. However, it may be taken that any envelope or card bearing a postmark dated between 23rd September, 1870, and 28th January, 1871, was forwarded from Paris by balloon post - the first authoritative air mail. A connecting link between balloon and aeroplane posts took place in 1896, when a Mr. Fricker inaugurated a pigeon service between Great Barrier Island and Auckland N.Z., 66 miles apart, a post which continued for several years. Special triangular stamps were used for this service, depicting a pigeon in full flight, the denomination being 6d. (blue) and 1s. (red). The first aeroplane post in the world, however, took place on 18th February, 1911, at Allahabad, India, organised by Captain Windham. The letters were carried by aeroplane from the United Provinces Exhibition to a Post Office receiving-station in Allahabad, from which place they were despatched to any part of the world to which they were addressed. Over 6,000 letters and cards, thus posted, were franked by the Exhibition P.O. with a die, specially cut in the postal workshops at Aligarh, incorporating a design of an aeroplane, encircled by the inscription "Aerial Post, Allahabad Exhibition," together with the date of despatch. A nominal additional fee of six annas per letter or card was charged, which amount was handed, without deduction, as a donation to the new buildings of the Oxford and Cambridge Hostel at Allahabad. In honour of King George's Coronation this same Captain Windham was also the organiser of the first air post in the United Kingdom, which was flown between Hendon and Windsor on 9th September, 1911, and for a few following days. No special stamps were issued, but envelopes and postcards bearing a design of an aeroplane flying over Windsor Castle, with the winding Thames and St. Paul's Cathedral in the distance, were sold at 1s. and 6d. respectively. The postmark was worded "First United Kingdom Aerial Post," and the date; about 100,000 pieces of mail being carried by this service. U.S.A. was busy just about the same time, in 1911, experimenting with air mails, and this, coupled with the knowledge gained in the War, resulted in the establishment early in 1918, of an air line between New York and Washington, 218 miles apart. After the Armistice, lack of trains and engines led to an extension of this service to Cleveland and Chicago. This line now continues right on to San Francisco, by way of Omaha, Nebraska, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Salt Lake City, Utah. The trip takes three days and is 2,651 miles in length, but results in letters reaching their destination 42 hours before the mail-train is due. Another air line runs between St. Louis, Chicago, and St. Paul, whilst numerous other towns are in process of being linked up by air. In the past twelve months over half a million pounds weight of mail matter has been airborne, and about £50,000 has been actually saved, as compared with the cost of transit by rail. On the 2nd of June, 1912, the Japanese postal authorities experimented with an air mail between Yokohama and Tokyo. A few letters are known to exist, whose envelopes bear the ordinary stamp and obliteration, with a special postmark, inscribed "Japanese Aerial Mail" and the Japanese equivalent for the date, but the attempt, being only experimental, was discontinued after the first day. From 1912 till 1917, aerial mails did not make much progress, but the reason which caused the inception of the air post, namely, war, was responsible for the re-opening of this means of communication. It happened that there was very serious congestion on the Italian railways in 1917, to relieve which an air mail was organised, on the 22nd May, between Rome and Turin. These cities are about 350 miles apart, the air space between them being bridged within four hours. In this connection. Italy achieved fame by being the first country to issue a stamp for use of its air mail, which took the form of an overprint on the 1903 "Inland Express Letter" stamp, 25c. rose, as follows :- ESPERIMENTO POSTA AEREA MAGGIO 1917 TORINO-ROMA - ROMA-TORINO

A month later, on 28th June, owing to the interference of Austrian submarines with Naples and Palermo, Sicily, mail steamers, a special seaplane service was inaugurated between these two places, which are 170 miles apart. The stamp used in this connection was the then unissued 40c. violet "Express Delivery" stamp, overprinted with the words IDROVOLANTE NAPOLl PALERMO NAPOLI 25 CENT 25

Another wartime air mail was brought into being on 30th March, 1918, by Austria, her planes carrying letters from Vienna to Kieff , with calls at Cracow and Lemberg. Three of the 1916 "Arms" type stamps were used, all being overprinted in block capitals with the formidable word "FLUGPOST", meaning "flying post."

"1.50 K 1.50'' was surcharged on the 2kr. (lilac) and "2.50 K 2.50" on the 3kr. (bistre), whilst the 4kr. (grey) was used without any surcharge. To the U.S.A. falls the honour of issuing the first distinctive air post stamp, which made its appearance on the 15th May, 1918, on the inauguration of the New York-Washington service. This stamp, which was recess-plate printed in carmine and blue, without watermark, at the Washington Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and is perforated 11, depicts a mail-carrying plane in flight. Over two million of these stamps were printed, out of which one lucky purchaser secured, over the P.O. counter, a sheet of 100 with the aeroplane inverted , the only sheet known to be printed in error. A Colonel Green eventually bought up the whole sheet, selling half of it, and retaining the remaining 50 in his own collection. These he had with him on hoard his steam yacht when it foundered in 1919, 43 of these stamps being so damaged as to be useless, which makes the error a very rare stamp. The air-mail fee was reduced on 15th July to 16 cents, and again in December, 1918 to 6 cents, for which stamps of these values were issued, yellow-green in the first instance, orange in the latter, the original design being retained. Since then the extra air-post fee has been abolished, and the ordinary mail fee of 2 cents, or 1d., an ounce is charged. It is not contemplated to issue a separate aerial mail stamp. On 4th July, 1918, the Hungarians experimented with an air mail, having Budapest as its starting point, and with various internal towns as destinations; but owing to the weather conditions and accidents to aviators, it was only in existence 20 days. Two of the 1916-17 stamps were surcharged as follows :- "1 K 50f. " on 75 filler (blue). "2 K 50f." on 2 krona (brown). the words "REPÜLÖ POSTA" being overprinted above the value, in red and blue respectively. This overprinting was carried out at the State Printing Works at Budapest, and is not remarkable for its good workmanship. This will be especially noticeable in the copy I show of the lower value, in which several letters are broken, whilst the "P" of "POSTA" has no top at all. It rather looks as if this stamp had taken part in one of the accidents which occurred. In October, 1920, an aerial mail was established, linking Hungary with other European countries, and the 1916-17 10kr. stamp was overprinted with the words "LEGI POSTA" and the new value, 3, 8, or 12 korona.

The air fairly hummed in 1919 with air post developments, and in all parts of the world aerial mails were instituted or carried out with this object in view. Early in the year an aeroplane post was started between Bombay and Karachi to expedite delivery of mail brought by steamers to Bombay. Public apathy and lack of support, however, caused the speedy discontinuance of this air line. Alexandria, Cairo, and Ismailia were linked together by air mail of 17th March, by "R.A.F." planes, which carried only official correspondence during the native disturbances, no special stamps or postmark being used. The envelopes, however, were marked with rubber stamp, "Aerial Post, E.E.F.", meaning "Egyptian Expeditionary Force". This service was discontinued as soon as conditions were normal. Switzerland was next in the field, or air, I should say, by the opening of a summer aerial post between Zurich and Lausanne, with calls at Berne and Neuchâtel, which took place on 28th April, 1919. The ordinary postage was charged, plus an air fee of 50c. For this latter purpose the current 50c. "Helvetia " type stamp was overprinted at the Federal Mint, Berne, with a design in red, showing the Swiss Military Air Force badge. Postmarks bearing the words "Schweiger Flugpost" were used, in addition to the ordinary express letter postmark. On the 5th May, 100,000 copies of the 35c. stamp of the 1906 issue of Tunis were ready for sale in connection with the air service which connected Gabés, Djerba, Zarzis, and Ben Gardane, as from that date. These stamps had been overprinted at the French Government Printing Works in Paris, and, in addition to the central overprint of the French aviator's badge, the air fee denomination of "30" centimes appeared on the stamp with the words "POSTE AÉRIENNE", the old value being obliterated by three bars. The stamp depicts the ruins of Hadrian's Aqueduct and, with its overprint, shows a true blending of the ancient with the modern. I wonder what Hadrian would say if he knew? This stamp has recently been replaced by a 30c. stamp of similar design, in blue and grey-green. We now come to the gallant, but unsuccessful attempt of Messrs. Hawker and Grieve to fly the Atlantic from Newfoundland to the United Kingdom. This took place on the 18th May, 1919, on a Sopwith machine, and resulted in the aeroplane falling into the sea, the two aviators with their mail being fortunately salved by a passing steamer. The mail reached the P.O. intact with the help of the British Fleet. The contents were undamaged, though in some cases wet, but none was in such condition as to prevent ultimate delivery. For the purposes of this mail 200 of the 3c. "Caribou" issue were overprinted at the Royal Gazette Office, St. John's (where all the other air-stamp overprints have been carried out), with the words "FIRST TRANSATLANTIC AIRPOST, April, 1919." - for the flight was expected to take place in April, though weather conditions were unfavourable until the following month. Of the 200 stamps, 18 were damaged and destroyed in the presence of the Auditor-General, 11 were used as presentation copies (one of which was sent to H.M. the King), and 95 were used and cancelled in the mail itself, leaving 76 still to be accounted for. These were sold at $25 each on behalf of the Marine Disaster Fund. and as only 182 of these stamps are known to exist, they are of great rarity. The first Trans-Atlantic Air Stamp was presented by the aviators, to be auctioned for the benefit of the Marine Disaster Fund. Lieut.-Col. E. S. Halford. of the Air Ministry, eventually bought the stamp for £210. Later in the month of May the air mail, ready for despatch by the Raynham-Martinsyde Atlantic flight, bore stamps of the 1c., 2c., 3c., and 24c. current "Caribou" series. These were overprinted as follows :-"1st Atlantic Airpost, Martinsyde-Raynham, Morgan". The cheers of the send-off had hardly died away before the plane crashed to earth to become a useless wreck, and the mail had to be despatched through the usual channels. The 15c. stamp of the 1897 (Jubilee) series, surcharged "Trans-Atlantic AIR POST, 1919. ONE DOLLAR" was now issued to prepay postage on letters sent by the Alcock-Whitten Brown flight to U.K. This non-stop flight commenced on 14th June, 1919, in a Vickers-Vimy machine, and by this means mail posted in Newfoundland on the early morning of 14th June was delivered in London on the night of the 17th-three days after leaving Newfoundland. The stamps were sold at $1 each, but the limited edition, was speedily bought up. 10,000 were surcharged in sheets of 25, making 400 sheets in all. In the overprinting errors hme crept in. Each sheet, therefore, contained 16 stamps normally overprinted; seven stamps with no comma after "POST"; one with an imperfect comma; and one without the full stop after "1919" and no comma after "POST". Thus it will be seen that of the 10,000 stamps issued, 6,400 were normally overprinted, 2,800 had no comma, 400 had an imperfect comma, and 400 had no stop or comma. It will be noticed that the block of four stamps, which I show, contains all four varieties - a rare combination. To celebrate an experimental air post between Puerto, Port Colombia, and Barranquila, 200 of the 1917 2c. Colombian stamps were overprinted locally with the inscription "1 en SERVICIO POSTAL AEREO 6-18-19" in five lines in black. Only one flight was made and the stamps were not accepted by the P.O. and were never cancelled by them. In October, 1920, an attempt was made to institute an air service between Cartagena and Barranquila, but owing to serious fatal accidents, this air mail has been indefinitely suspended. The contract for this service was given by the P.O. to a local firm, and letters carried through the air travelled at ordinary postage, plus 10c. per 15 grammes. Two thousand copies of a 10c oblong stamp were printed, depicting a vessel on the sea, with aeroplane above, and setting sun on the horizon. This was superseded by a set of seven values, issued privately by the air contractors, the design showing a map of the Colombian coast, with aeroplane in flight. To signalise the first air mail over the Rocky Mountains the envelopes of letters thus conveyed were franked with a special postmark bearing the words "1st B.C. Alberta Aerial Post." The mail in question was carried by plane, on August 5th, 1919, from Vancouver to Calgary, via Vernon and over the Great Divide to Lethbridge. On the return journey the pilot was forced to descend at Golden, and the letters were sent on by rail. Japan had made no serious attempt since its 1912 experiment to commence an air post, but with the intention of instituting regular flights between Tokyo and Osaka nearly 300 miles, stamps were issued for use on letters to be conveyed by the first air mail on October 3rd, 1919. These stamps were the current 1½ sen (blue) and the 3 sen (carmine), overprinted with the design of an aeroplane in red and black respectively. These two air stamps were on sale only at Head Post Offices on October 3rd, and in spite of elaborate precautions to prevent one person buying more than two stamps of each value, the entire issue of 40,000 overprinted stamps was sold out in a very short time. The weather played an important part in connection with this mail, and behaved so badly for day after day from October 4th, that the flight was abandoned for a further attempt (to the delight of the more superstitious Japanese and the letters sent by the usual method. The "King Albert Aerial Mail Service" was commenced early in January), 1920, in Belgian Congo. This service, which is carried out by seaplanes, embraces the whole of the Upper Congo River, and is flown in conjunction with the arrival of the Belgian mail steamers. In August last, four finely-drawn stamps, depicting scenes in the Congo with a seaplane above, made their appearance for use in this connection. The perforation is 12 and the values are :- 50c. orange and black. 1fr. violet and black. 2f blue and black. 5fr. green and black. By some unfortunate mistake, one which has caused the Belgian Government much annoyance, the word printed at the foot of each stamp, "Postluchtdienst," should have appeared as "Luchtpostdienst." As it stands the translation reads: "Service of the Postal Air," instead of "Postal Service of the Air." Of course, the printer may have been a man of imagination, and this was his way of prophesying that the air was soon to be so impregnated with correspondence as almost to describe the term "postal air." The air post instituted between Reval and Helsingfors in Estonia. was the direct outcome of the icebound nature of that country's coastline in the Gulf of Finland, which, at the time, permitted only a few Ships to arrive at Reval. Thus it happened that, on 7th February, 1920, three British-piloted planes left Reval with mail and reached Helsingfors in less than an hour later. Weather conditions prevented the return journey being made for over a week. The service, however, was continued until two months later, when, owing to a shortage of aeroplanes, only a very small proportion of the mail could be carried. Preference was given to diplomatic and Registered letters, ordinary being taken if there was room. The breaking up of the ice early in May permitted the re-opening of sea communication, and the air mail was discontinued. In March a five mark imperforate triangular stamp was issued for use on this mail, printed in yellow, blue and black, and showing an aeroplane in flight. The ordinary postage was charged in addition to the air fee. A Tientsin-Pekin aerial mail was inaugurated as a regular service on 7th May, 1920, with Handley-Page machines. Letters posted at 5 p.m. in Tientsin can now be delivered in Pekin three hours later. No special stamp has so far been issued, but the postmark reads: - "Chinese Post Office - despatched by aeroplane - Tientsin-Pekin." The Chinese Cabinet has now sanctioned the opening of an air service between Pekin and Shanghai, with three intermediate stations, and 80 landing grounds. Siam, a country whose airmen are so intrepid and so seemingly without nerves, has commenced in September an aerial post between Bangkok and Chantzboon, roughly 300 miles. The current 5 satangs stamps has been overprinted by hand-machine, with the Siamese emblematic bird, the garuda, under which appear four lines of native wording. When the London-Paris Airpost was opened to the general public on 10th November, 1919, the charge was excessive, viz, 2s. 6d. per ounce. The total number of letters sent on the first day after this charge was made totalled 315, whilst the aeroplanes ready for use had a capacity of 76,000 letters. Since then, however, steps have been taken to popularise the aerial mail, the chief of which has been the reduction of the air fee to 2d. per ounce, plus ordinary postage, whilst the express fee is 6d. an ounce. A blue label, inscribed "BY AIR MAIL," which can be obtained free from the Post Office, is the only outward and visible token on the left-hand corner of the envelope that it has travelled from England by aerial mail. The absence of this label, so long as the envelope is clearly marked as to its means of conveyance, will not debar the letter from being forwarded by air and delivered. In France, a label is attached to the envelope, depicting as its central design, the great French aviator, Guynemer. Besides the twice daily service to Paris and back, carried out by the Aircraft Transport and Travel Co., Ltd., recent air lines have linked together six countries, namely, England, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. This service was inaugurated on 15th September, when a Danish-piloted de. Haviland plane left Copenhagen with the London mail and, travelling via Hamburg, reached Amsterdam, where the letters were transferred to the Handley-Page and Airco joint air service, and so to London. On the return journey, Queen Alexandra sent a basket of fruit to the Empress Dowager of Russia. The fruit left London a 3p.m. and was conveved to Her Majesty, outside Copenhagen, by 5 p.m. the following day. Last week a mail plane flew from Cricklewood, London, made a stop at Amsterdam, and arrived at Copenhagen in 5 hours 40 minutes, the distance being 520 miles. The London-Amsterdam service, instituted on 5th July, 1920, is carried out by the Handley-Page Transport Co., and the journey of 265 miles has been flown in 1 hour 50 minutes, or an average of 150 miles per hour. For use in connection with this inking up of countries, Sweden, at the end of September, issued three overprinted stamps, viz. :- 3 öre brown, Official, surcharged "LUFTPOST 10" 2 öre orange, Official, surcharged "LUFTPOST 20" 4 öre lilac, Official, surcharged "LUFTPOST 50" Envelopes bear a blue label, similar to that of Great Britain, but the word "LUFTPOST" is printed in red thereon. A provisional overprinting of the 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50c. current Spanish stamps with the words "CORREO AEREO," marked the opening of an aerial post between Seville and Larache, in Morocco; between Barcelona and Palma, Morocco; and between Malaga and Melilla, on April 4th. Only 20,000 sets were issued and these provisionals are to be superseded at an early date, by a distinctive series of air stamps, portraying the progress of aerial navigation. One of the latest countries to send mail through the air is the go-ahead State of Czecho-Slovakia. Three of the Hradschin series of stamps have been surcharged with new values, whilst a design of an aeroplane now forms the centre of the stamp. The 200 heller value is surcharged "14 KRONES," which is the ordinary postage plus air fee between Prague and Warsaw. The 500 heller bears a new value of 24 krones, for use between Prague and Paris, a 5½ hours' journey, carried out thrice weekly, travelling via Strashourg. The planes are sufficiently roomy to allow the carrying of passengers and goods. The 1,000 heller now takes the value of 28 krones, for use between Prague and London. On October 16th Danzig advertised its air mail by the issue of three provisionals. These stamps were the 40pf. Germans, already overprinted "DANZIG"; and further overprinted with new denominations, 40 and 60pf. and 1 mark, together with the design of an aeroplane on the two lower values and a winged posthorn on the 1 mark. From this brief survey, of the development of the aerial mail, it will be admitted, I think, that the prophecy contained in my opening remarks as to the coming of universal air posts, is well-founded - or well-aired, whichever is the correct term. Only a week or two ago the newspapers reported a combination of seven air transport firms, British, Danish, Dutch, Swedish, French, Roumanian, and German, with a view to completing a network of air lines that will shortly spread over the whole of North-West Europe. A new world to conquer has sprung up before the philatelist, one in which his imagination, initiative and foresight can play an important part, and I trust that my remarks this evening may prove of use to those whose flight of fancy take them into the ethereal realms of aerial philately. THE KINDNESS OF THE HANGMAN

  Many years ago, over forty years ago, on Christmas night, I gathered with my friends from Parkchester at our favorite bar, “The Golden Note.”

  We drank and celebrated as we listened to Nat “King” Cole sing “The Christmas Song” for the hundredth time before his voice would fade away, once again, into the oncoming New Year.  The Yule theme wouldn’t be heard again until the following year.  Yes, back then in the stone ages, the Christmas season began on the day after Thanksgiving instead of Labor Day (or earlier) as it does now.

  Jimmy was the bartender at the Golden Note that night. He was young.  Before that night, I assumed that he was in his early twenties.

    Exceptionally good-looking with straight blond hair parted on the side, Jimmy’s hair barely touched his shoulders and fell down slightly passed his ears. He was a soft-spoken, amiable guy and everyone liked him.

    At times, I used to think how great it would be to be Jimmy, especially since I was such an ugly little teenager.  How nice it would be to have girls look at you and say, “Wow! He’s a good-looking guy. I wonder if he has a girlfriend?”

  The Golden Note, for all practical purposes was an old man’s bar. It was dark, with the stench of stale beer buried so deep inside the stainless wooden bar that it would take a nuclear explosion to rid the place of the smell.

  Across from the bar, there were booths with torn, green leather cushions.  At any giving time, you might find a regular patron comfortably asleep across the bottom cushion of one of the booths with his head resting on a folded jacket that was used as a pillow.

  We were all teenagers at the time, and even though most of my friends were eighteen at the time, which was the legal drinking age back then, I was still a couple of years below the legal age, but that was of little consequence back then in the Bronx.

  At about 3 in the morning, we decided it was time to go home.  The group decided to leave Jimmy an extra big tip, which at that time was probably thirty-five dollars split among six of us. He was exceptionally grateful, and he bought us all one last drink.

  We were the only ones left in the place, and Jimmy joined us at the end of the bar with a drink of his own.

  Someone asked him, if he had done anything special on Christmas Eve.  Jimmy replied, “No, I just stayed home and watched TV. I like it that way.”

  “So, nothing at all?”

  “Yeah, just stayed home, watched TV, and had a few beers. Ever since returning from Vietnam, I prefer the quiet and uneventful.”

  The war in Vietnam had ended just a couple of years previously and none of my friends, who were all too young to be drafted, had gone to Vietnam. We got our news about the war from the newspapers and the TV coverage. Jimmy’s confession came as a shock to us. He didn’t look much older than most of us.

  “No, I’m plenty old to have been drafted. Just turned twenty-seven.”

  “And what was it like?”

  “Scary,” he replied as his eyes drifted to another time.

    He transformed his arms and hands into a makeshift automatic rifle, which he pointed toward the floor.

  “During one firefight, I remember shooting a dead Vietcong soldier over and over again.  It wasn’t until my sergeant pulled me away that I realized that I just shot like forty rounds into a corpse.”

    Jimmy unwound his arms and hands, looked up, shook his head and smiled a haunted smile.

  Ten years later, sitting at one of my favorite bars, Mirabelle, on the Sunset Strip, I drank a cold, refreshing beer.   I occasionally looked up from the newspaper I was reading and glanced admiringly at Ava, the barmaid, a Czechoslovakian beauty who, at 41, made the young, aspiring starlets walking along the Strip and sitting at the tables at Mirabelle look positively plain.

  The gentleman sitting next to me asked me if there was any “new news” he should know about. I simply shook my head and replied, “The same old shit.” He was in his mid-thirties, with long straight hair coming down past his shoulders and sported a bushy mustache.

    The man was soft spoken and drinking a coffee, which I assumed he brought with him from the table where he probably ate dinner. Ava put a fresh beer in front of me, and I asked the gentleman if I could buy him a drink to go with the coffee.

  “No,” He replied as Ava refilled his cup of coffee. “ I haven’t had a drink in nearly ten years, since I went on a five year binge after coming back from Vietnam. I was there for about a year and a half and saw virtually no action, even though I went on routine patrols throughout my whole time there.”

  He paused as he took a sip of his coffee and looked straight up and into the mirror behind the bar.

    “Just before I was going to leave Nam, we were out on just another routine patrol and we were suddenly ambushed by the Vietcong.  For what was probably no more than five minutes, we were in a firefight.

  All I remember was shooting wildly into the jungle straight ahead of me during the entire time. When it was all over, there were dead and wounded soldiers from my company spread out all around me.

    “I didn’t have so much as a scratch… just the smell of gunpowder, sweat, and the cries of my wounded comrades,” he continued.

    He took another sip of his coffee and repeated, “And that was all the action I saw over there.”

    Ten years later, sitting at table #27 at the Palm Restaurant in West Hollywood I listened to Hal Goodman tell me some fabulous stories about the entertainment business.

  Hal was short, maybe 5 feet, 5 inches tall with broad shoulders and short, gray hair. He had worked in the industry close to fifty years and, for most of that time, Hal worked as a comedy writer for Johnny Carlson.

  Like me, Hal was also from the Bronx.  He told me when he was about eleven-years-old, his mother forced him to take violin lessons.  He said he never felt so embarrassed as when he had to walk through the neighborhood holding that stupid violin case. But his mother meant well, he said, and he still loved her.

  Hal was soft-spoken, extremely gracious, and I don’t know if there was a mean bone in his body.

    After a few minutes, we got off the subject of the entertainment business and discussed the upcoming Presidential election between President Clinton and Senator Bob Dole. We both agreed that it would be very difficult to beat President Clinton, especially with the economy so strong.

  I felt that the only advantage I saw Senator Dole had was his war record.  Hal reminded me that it didn’t matter much when Clinton beat President Bush, a war hero, and that most people of voting age today were not even born when World War II ended.

  Hal, to my surprise, told me he served in the army during World War II. The army and Hal just didn’t seem to go together.

  Hal was so easygoing and kind that it was hard for me to picture him holding a rifle, nevertheless aiming and shooting at another human being. He told me that during one fierce battle with the Germans everything suddenly went dark and he was knocked unconscious.

  When he woke up, the dismembered bodies of his friends were scattered all around him. The Germans had dropped a bomb on them and he had no idea how he survived. He was wounded, and airlifted to an army hospital, which would become famous in the following days when General Patton visited wounded soldiers.  The mercurial general went on his famous tirade against a soldier suffering from post trauma stress.

  Hal reiterated that he did not see Senator Dole getting any boost in the polls for his military service, and he went on to tell me a very funny story about Red Skelton.

    A few years later, while sitting in a chair in the backyard of a friend’s parents’ home in Beverly Hills, Lisa’s stepfather, Henry, picked up a copy of one of Goethe’s books and started reading it in very fluent German. He remarked, “When you read it in its original German it sounds so much better.”

  Having Goethe read to you in German during a yard sale is a rather surreal.  And to answer your next question…yes, they do have yard sales in Beverly Hills.  But I cannot imagine you getting the best deals.

  Henry was an optometrist and, on a few occasions, I accompanied my wife to see him for her annual checkups. He was quite enthusiastic about his profession, and there was never a time I went in which I didn’t learn some fascinating facts and stories about the eye.  For instance, he had recently seen a patient suffering from an eye infection and, after a number of failed attempts to get rid of the infection, he did further tests and discovered the patient’s infection was actually syphilis.  Syphilis of the eye…now that is something I never even knew existed.

  I tried not to imagine where that individual’s eyes had been, or more likely where his hands had been when he unknowingly spread the virus from his hands and into his eyes. Thankfully, he was cured and hopefully learned not trek too deeply into dirty places.

  Henry was thin, with gray, bushy hair and was occasionally frazzled from too many patients.  He wore glasses and without knowing anything about him, you would assume that he was a doctor, a researcher, a scholar, or a professor.

  In fact, he was all of the above. He was born in Cologne, Germany, and at five-years-old, he witnessed the rise to power in 1933 of Adolf Hitler (Talk about a deranged and syphilitic mind).

  Henry unfortunately was born Jewish, and he and his family were uprooted from their home in the lovely city of Cologne and relocated to a ghetto at Lodz, Poland.  Shortly after the forced relocation, he received a one-way, fourth-class train ticket to Auschwitz where he was separated from his family and would never see them again…

  Amazingly, Henry found the strength to survive while almost everyone around him succumbed to the gas chambers, starvation, experiments, hangings, a bullet to the head, and disease. Henry was one of only 19 German-speaking Jewish boys to survive the concentration camps.

  Henry Oster died two weeks ago. He lived to 90-years-old, and most people would agree that is a nice long life.

    I can’t help thinking how many years is “just” compensation for the torturous childhood he was forced to live: The stench of death and disease that surrounded and engulfed his youth.

  Ignorance will argue that at least he made it, whereas six million others died.

  Henry made the most of that time.  He donated his time to the Thalians, a charity to help people with mental problems.  He spoke at conferences around the world about the Holocaust at many venues ranging from local Los Angeles schools to the Holocaust museum to events in Europe.

  This man, who had arrived in the United States with no money, no education, and unable to speak English, let nothing hold him back.

  After all, he survived the Nazis.  Every day of his life was a victory…a slap in the face to the brutality and inhumane culture that this syphilitic ideology produced.

  In 2014, Henry Oster published a book titled, “The Kindness of the Hangman” that was a harrowing retelling of his very early childhood in Germany, his re-location in Poland, and finally his long-term internment in the hotel Auschwitz where many checked in and only a few rare cases were allowed to checkout.

  After reading the book, I had the pleasure to carry on a lively correspondence with Henry about the book.  We talked about his torturous experiences as a child and as a young teenager.

  He was a treasure trove of information and insights.  There have been many books written on the Holocaust by survivors and historians.  By 2014, however, very few living survivors of the Holocaust remained.

  Henry answered all my questions truthfully; even though with each answer, I could still feel the pain and isolation he felt some 70 years after. The suffering, torture, and pain went to bed with him each night and woke up with him each morning.  I suspect that it gave him no relief during his sleep, either.

  In our last correspondence, Henry emailed me to congratulate me on a book I just had published. We talked about the current world situation, and I asked if he saw any parallels between the current world situation and what he went through some 70 years ago.

  He said he was disgusted by what was going on in Syria and Yemen, but what was most troubling for him was what was going on in the United States.

  The anger, bigotry, and racism right here in his adopted and beloved country was more like what he heard back in Germany as Hitler consolidated power. It saddened him greatly, and he wondered what would become of this moment in time in ten or twenty years from now.

  A few nights ago, I was asleep when my son, Bogie, a handsome, debonair feline decided to jump on me and use me as a trampoline. I woke up, desperately trying to catch my breath as the big fur-child feigned his innocence.

  I patted his head and looked across at the TV, which my wife had left on. A young girl, maybe 4 or 5, came toward me from the screen. She was dirty, her clothes torn, and her hands pressed against her tiny ears.

  She was screaming as the Syrian army bombarded a village of innocent civilians. I had seen images similar to this over the last decade and I thought to myself, “Well, maybe if she is lucky enough to survive, she might not remember any of this.”

    Then, I thought about Jimmy, the stranger at Mirabelle, my friend Hal, and my friend Henry.

  I couldn’t help but laugh at the stupidity of my hope that the little girl could escape the terror of her life.

  If she is lucky enough to survive, that moment in time always will be with her, buried deep inside her soul.  One day, it finally will emerge, screaming and shrieking, before it goes quiet and voiceless…if she lives that long.

  The terror will haunt her for the rest of her life, whether she lives to be 90 or only for another day.

  Yet, somehow, I’m sure that Henry Oster is watching over her, telling her that she is not alone.

Comparison of Taste of the Wild vs. Blue Buffalo

Ingredients

  Winner: Blue Buffalo   

The two companies have similar ingredients, such as blueberries, chicken, and probiotics, but Blue Buffalo has more vegetables and superfoods.

Also, it is lower in fat and higher in fiber, omega-6, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Another reason why Blue Buffalo won for ingredients was because of they have foods with and without grains, so you can choose the food that works best for your dog’s dietary needs.

Taste of the Wild

TotW is entirely grain-free.

In place of grains, they have a mix of lentils and potatoes (including sweet potatoes).

They also use potato and pea flour to replace more traditional flours.

The first couple of ingredients in each of the top sellers is high-quality proteins.

As for the rest of the ingredients, there are a variety of fruits and vegetables, but being that the food is protein focused, it is a bit on the lighter side.

Blue Buffalo

The example ingredients are from the Wilderness line of dry dog food, which is Blue Buffalo’s most similar line to Taste of the Wild.

Blue Buffalo offers a wide variety of proteins, grains, vegetables, and fruits.

But, most of all, between their different dog food lines you can meet almost any dog’s needs.

Price/Value

  Winner: Taste of the Wild   

When comparing Blue Buffalo’s high protein line, Blue Wilderness, TotW was less expensive.

Blue Buffalo’s Wilderness line averages over $2 per pound whereas TotW averages under $2 per pound.

As usual, TotW won when it comes to pricing, and it is hard to beat the price and value you receive when buying TotW.

Availability

  Winner: Taste of the Wild   

Taste of the Wild only won by a hair.

Blue Buffalo can be found in almost all large pet stores, some boutique stores (but only select lines), some large hardware stores and grocery store chains.

TotW can be found in most of those locations plus doggy daycares and even high-end grocery stores.

Their online availability is pretty much the same.

This was pretty easy; my dogs didn’t care for the LifeSource bits.

Blue LifeSource Bits are a precise blend of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, but that’s only good if the dogs will eat them.

Blue Buffalo can be found in most places. Though price-wise the protein-focused brand came in higher than ToTW, other dog food lines are less expensive per pound than ToTW.

The number one reason they came out the winner is because of the wide selection of food options.  They have food for so many different needs:

Prescription foods

Limited ingredient foods for allergic dogs

Large and small breed varieties

Conclusion

Both TotW and Blue Buffalo are excellent dog food brands, so you really can’t go wrong with either food.

If you’re still on the fence about the food, don’t forget to consider things like availability, company reputation, and ingredient sourcing.

About the San Francisco Boys Chorus

The San Francisco Boys Chorus (SFBC) is comprised of the Grammy award-winning Concert Chorus, the Graduate Chorale, the Hand Bell Program and the four-level Chorus School, which includes the Preparatory Chorus.

The CONCERT CHORUS is the SFBC’s premiere performing ensemble and is comprised of choristers who exhibit vocal excellence, performance flair, and exceptional musicianship skills. Led by Artistic Director, Ian Robertson, the committed Concert Chorus members, ages 10 to 13, present a full concert series in the San Francisco Bay Area, tour nationally and internationally, record often and appear annually with renowned artistic partners, such as the San Francisco Opera, the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Ballet, the Robert Moses Kin Dance Company and other Bay Area arts organizations such as George Cleve’s Midsummer Mozart Festival and Stanford Live.

The Concert Chorus is the level to which Chorus School singers aspire. Ellen Leslie

Two-time winner of the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions in the San Francisco District (2018 and 2016), Ellen Leslie is quickly becoming a sought-after singer both in the United States and abroad.  Critics have lauded her “absolutely beautiful” (Opus Colorado), “bright, clear” (The Berkeley Daily Planet) and “radiant…lovely trilling soprano” (San Jose Mercury News), and her “sweet, strong tone and earnest demeanor” (San Francisco Classical Voice).

Upcoming highlights in the 2018-19 season include a role debut as Adina with San Francisco Opera Guild’s outreach production of The Elixir of Love; premiering the role of Jane Bennet in Kirke Mechem’s Pride & Prejudice; a European tour as the soprano solo in Brahms’ Requiem; the soprano solo in Faure’s Requiem in San Francisco; a song cycle premiere in recital with celebrated cellist Emil Miland; and the Western Region Finals of the Met National Council Auditions in Los Angeles.

This summer, as a resident Young Artist with Opera Saratoga for the 2018 season, Ellen sang roles in The Consul, The Merry Widow, the American premiere of Rocking Horse Winner and the world premiere of Vinkensport, or the Finch Opera.  In 2017, Ellen made her German stage debut as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) in Schloss Merode, and as Rosane (Vivaldi La verità in cimento) in Leipzig.  Recent engagements in the Bay Area include Micaëla (La Tragédie de Carmen) and Lady Billows (Albert Herring) at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Damigella and Amore (L’Incoronazione di Poppea) with the SFCM Baroque Ensemble, and Iris (Semele) with Pocket Opera. A skilled interpreter of the lyric soprano roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan canon, Ellen has most recently sung Josephine (HMS Pinafore) and the title role in Patience with San Francisco’s acclaimed Lamplighters Music Theatre.

A lover of new music in all forms, Ellen sang in the 2015 and 2016 workshops for Santa Fe Opera’s 2017 production of The (r)Evolution of Steve Jobs, with music by Mason Bates and conducted by Michael Christie.  She has also premiered songs and opera roles by several emerging Bay Area composers, and received a grant to commission a full song cycle, “Charmes,” by Eric Choate, which premiered in 2015.

Having made her oratorio debut at age 19 as the soprano solo in Carmina Burana with the Lamont Symphony Orchestra, Ellen is also an accomplished choral and orchestral singer and soloist.  Since the 2012-2013 season, she has made frequent appearances singing with the Colorado Ballet in their production of The Nutcracker.  Recent concert engagements also have included Porgy and Bess in Concert (2012) and a Fourth of July extravaganza (2014) with the Dallas Symphony, and The Planets (2013) with the New York Philharmonic, all at the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival.  She also sang backup for Josh Groban in his 2013 performance with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Red Rocks Ampitheatre.

Ellen grew up on an Irwin 37 sailboat in the San Francisco Bay and spent her childhood sailing around the world with her family.  She earned concurrent undergraduate degrees from the University of Denver–a BM in Voice Performance and a BA in French, both summa cum laude.  She returned to California to for her MM at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under acclaimed soprano Sylvia Anderson.

In 2016, Ellen split her time between San Francisco and Leipzig, Germany, where she completed her studies with soprano Caroline Stein on full scholarship at the Hochschule für Musik “Feliz Mendelssohn Bartholdy,” earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Voice in conjunction with SFCM.  She has also lived in Strasbourg, France, where she researched a thesis on the sociopolitical climate surrounding Bizet’s Carmen; while there, she was also invited to sing Michael Tippett’s A Child of our Time with conductor Carlo Rizzi and the Orchèstre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.

"CIFF 2018: 'The Hate U Give' and 'Widows' on the Red Carpet": My interviews with filmmakers Steve McQueen and George Tillman Jr., author Gillian Flynn and actors Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez and Amandla Stenberg at the Chicago International Film Festival, published at Indie Outlook.

“There’s no question Tillman Jr.’s film would make an essential double bill with Carlos López Estrada’s ‘Blindspotting,’ another powerful illustration of modern-day prejudice amplified shamelessly by our president. ‘What I want to illuminate for audiences is the importance of having empathy instead of sympathy, of having understanding as well as the ability to listen to each another,’ Tillman Jr. told me. ‘We must have the tough conversations provoked by this film, and I’m very excited for audiences to take it all in.’ Among the most potent truths illuminated by ‘The Hate U Give’ is the tendency for white people to mistake ‘color blindness’ as a form of acceptance. Having been open about her own sexuality in recent years, Stenberg told me that the importance of acknowledging one’s identity extends far beyond the realm of race. ‘Whether it’s your blackness, your gayness, your trans-ness or whatever it is, I think it is always so important to acknowledge the components of self that make us us,’ stressed Stenberg. ‘The premise of ‘I don’t see color’ is one that rests upon the idea that we live in a post-racial or post-identity society, which is not true. When we relate to one another and see, hear and regard each other, I think it’s really important to be inclusive of all the different facets of self that contribute to one’s own experience. You have to make sure that when you are seeing someone, you are seeing them not despite of who they are, but including and because of who they are.’”

"The Many Faces of Women Who Identify as Witches": Including Deborah Kampmeier, the exceptional filmmaker pictured above, in an article by The New Yorker's Naomi Fry. Catch the exhibit at NYC's ClampArt before it closes on November 24th.

“In her portrait series ‘Major Arcana: Witches in America,’ which will be shown at the ClampArt gallery, in Chelsea, beginning October 4th, the photographer Frances F. Denny seeks to explore the figure of the contemporary witch beyond the cultural chestnuts that have shrouded and obscured it. In the course of the past two years, Denny, who holds an M.F.A. in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design (where I taught her for a semester a number of years ago), has travelled in California, Louisiana, and along the East Coast, taking the portraits of dozens of women who identify as witches. Her subjects are of diverse age, social class, and ethnicity, and practice a range of rituals, often drawing on ‘mysticism, engagement with the occult, politically oriented activism, polytheism, ritualized ‘spell-work’ and plant-based healing,’ according to Denny’s exhibition notes. Among them are ‘self-proclaimed green witches, white witches, kitchen witches, hedge witches, and sex witches.’ The series as a whole aims to avoid easy formulas and, instead, to exhibit the heterogeneity and individuality of modern-day witches, Denny told me recently, adding, ‘I’m not pinning these women down.’”

"Fare Thee Well, Filmstruck": Our critic Monica Castillo eulogizes the irreplaceable streaming service in her latest Tiny Letter newsletter, which you can sign up for here.

“I don't need to tell you the news has been bad lately. But to lose a source of comfort in these trying times? It feels especially cruel, almost personally so. Last week, Time Warner pulled the plug on FilmStruck, the streaming service that offered treasures from the TCM vault and the Criterion Collection. As far as I know, there is no other streaming service that takes programming and extras so seriously. FilmStruck started the season after I began at The New York Times. It was exciting news to cover, and I felt especially attached to FilmStruck because of the timing. I picked movies from its collections after work to de-stress. Later, I came up with ideas on how to cover some new discovery I just HAD to write about. I cried my way through the early films of David Lean during a few rough patches, and I threw on old favorites like the movies of Peter O'Toole while doing chores to keep me company. FilmStruck proved the streaming world wasn't all bad news for classic movie fans, but that it could be a curated resource useful to diehard cinephiles and newcomers alike.”

"The Halloween Tree": Andrea Thompson revisits the 1993 animated gem at The Young Folks.

“Yes, Halloween has lasted, but everything mentioned above is mere window dressing. What has kept this holiday going is one of the universal truths of humanity which unites us all, and that is our fascination with fear and the individual horrors that shake us to our core. Few movies understand this, but the Emmy-winning 1993 TV movie ‘The Halloween Tree’ does. I discovered this little gem as a kid because I had the childhood most writers have, the kind with a nose fully inserted in a book. And the author of many such books was one of the great masters of sci-fi himself, Ray Bradbury, the author of the novel of the same name, as well as other books such as The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, and Fahrenheit 451. For the film adaptation, Bradbury actually penned the screenplay and serves as narrator, which means much of his poetic prose is preserved. The movie takes place on Halloween Night, and follows four preteen kids, Jenny, Ralph, Tom, and Wally, all costumed up as a witch, a mummy, a skeleton, and a monster respectively, and eager to join their best friend Pip. As ‘The Halloween Tree’ puts it, ‘Some say that on the day he was born, all the soda pop bottles in the world fizzed over. Pipkin, who could yell louder, sing better, and eat more popcorn. Pip, the greatest boy who ever lived.’”

"'Bohemian Rhapsody': A Disservice to Freddie Mercury": Solzy at the Movies critic Danielle Solzman eloquently explains why the hotly anticipated biopic is a missed opportunity. 

“While the band’s popularity is the large focus of the film, it’s hard to discuss Freddie Mercury without knowing what we know about his sexuality. There were the rumors in the tabloids during the band’s heyday. The film doesn’t ignore it per se. There’s a montage of clips where Freddie and personal manager Paul Prenter walking into gay clubs. Even though we see him clearly hitting on guys, there’s not much outside of the relationship with Paul and even Jim Hutton (Aaron McCusker). This is it. Nothing to say of Freddie’s relationship with radio DJ Kenny Everett (Dickie Beau). There’s not even any sex scenes between them! I liken it to social media in that they’re only showing us what they want us to see. The biggest worry obviously has come true. It really does a disservice to the singer. When Freddie receives his AIDS diagnosis, the moment is not as emotional as it could be. This is a serious disease that killed many people. It led to his passing at the age of 45 years old on November 24, 1991. Here it is, the film misses an opportunity to have a bigger focus on his battle with the disease. To make matters worse, Freddie was diagnosed two years AFTER the Live Aid performance and yet as they rehearse for the gig, he opens up about his battle with AIDS! If you’re going to tell the story, tell it the right way.”
