> Pheres: Confront Kit (Redux)
@refiningspacetime
Giving blood always tires out out in a weird, bone-deep way that you can’t fix by just taking a breather. Fortunately, you have the somewhat unique talent of falling asleep any time, any place at the drop of a hat - which, unfortunately for you, is probably related to the fact that you also wake up on a dime. Passing out on Em’s couch in a rumpled dress shirt after failing to wrestle through the bag you’d packed for the weekend for your actual sleepwear or even any sopor patches is restful enough - but when the door to Emerel’s hive opens and closes, you go from pressing sleep lines into your cheek courtesy of the couch pattern to wide awake and heading towards the entryway in five seconds flat.
“Pheres!” you call out, dragging your hair out of your face, and belatedly realize you look pretty ridiculous. Luckily for you, he at least hasn’t got anybody with him. Still, you end up scrambling to tie your hair back into something at least a little bit more sensible, and by the time you’re at the door, you’re straightening out your shirt and trying to make sure the collar buttons don’t catch on your throat bandage.
“Hey,” you greet, “How’d it go, did you have fun? Or, well -” You laugh, sheepish. “- Was it at least not bad?”

Top React Native Boilerplates for 2021!
Tumblr media
React Native is a Facebook platform for creating React applications for Android and iOS. If you’re familiar with React Native App Development Services, you’re aware that beginning a project from the ground up can be a time-consuming, boring, and repetitive task. As a result, we’ll look at some of the most common React Native boilerplates in this post, which will help you get started on a project much faster.
These are, in my opinion, some of the best boilerplates available today, and they were all created by incredible developers. To save you time when selecting a boilerplate from this post, I’ll go through some of its features so you can figure out which one is the right match for your project.
The UI architecture, navigation type, and testing capacity of the boilerplates that will be seen later in this article were used to evaluate them.
I did not rank these projects because I feel that each one is a valuable tool in its own right. However, the order in which they appear is determined by their number of stars on Github.
1. Ignite by Infinite Red
Infinite Red’s Ignite is a cutting-edge React Native Development project boilerplate with a CLI, component/model generators, and more.
Ignite is the most common React Native software boilerplate for both Expo and bare React Native, with 12.2K ratings, and it comes with Expo support out of the box. MobX is used for state control, React navigation is used for routing and navigation, Apisauce is used to communicate with REST servers, and the Jest platform is used for testing in this TypeScript-ready project.
This boilerplate appeals to me because it is Flipper-ready, Reactotron-ready, and supports Expo out of the box. Aside from that, this boilerplate uses MobX for state management instead of Redux, which is considered to be much easier to understand than Redux. It also includes AsyncStorage, which is combined with MST for state restoration.
Ignite has a command-line interface known as ignite-cli. It is advised that you use npx, which comes with Node.js, to access the latest version of the CLI at runtime rather than installing and managing a specific version of the CLI globally.
You should be able to build a new project with the following commands after meeting all of the prerequisites specified on this project’s page:
# for vanilla React Native
npx ignite-cli new GameApp
# or for Expo-powered:
npx ignite-cli new GameApp –expo
2. React Native Starter Kit by mcnamee
React Native Starter by mcnamee is a boilerplate utility for React Native that will get you up and running fast. On GitHub, it has 3000 stars.
Redux is used for state control, React Native Router is used for routing and navigation, NativeBase is used for UI architecture, React Native Vector Icons is used for icons, Axios is used to communicate with REST servers, and the Jest platform is used for checking.
The boilerplate’s creators made certain that the batteries were included. This boilerplate includes not only NativeBase, a library that provides important cross-platform React Native UI components, but also Redux persist, a library that helps us to save the redux store in our browser’s local storage.
You may use this boilerplate to start a new project by simply cloning it with the following command:
clone https://github.com/mcnamee/react-native-starter-kit.git your_app_name
Tumblr media
3. React Native Boilerplate by The Coding Machine
The Coding Machine’s React Native Boilerplate is a React Native project framework for creating strong cross-platform smartphone apps with a distinction of issues between the user interface, state management, and business logic. On Github, it has a rating of 2k stars.
The Redux state management system, React Navigation for routing and navigation, Axios for communicating with REST servers, and the Jest framework for checking are all included in this boilerplate.
This boilerplate is simple to set up and includes an internationalization library called i18next.
Go to the React Native environment configuration and pick the React Native CLI Quickstart tab before using this project. Follow the guidance for the implementation and target operating systems.
Hire Dedicated React Native Mobile Developers to build a new project with the following command after meeting all of the prerequisites specified on this project’s page:
npx react-native init MyApp –template @thecodingmachine/react-native-boilerplate
Tumblr media
4. React Native Template TypeScript by the React Native community
React Native Template TypeScript is a 1.2K-star project by the React Native Community. This is a simple and clean React Native template for getting started with TypeScript quickly.
Since this TypeScript-ready project is intended to be simple, it does not have any libraries for state management, navigation, UI architecture, or communicating with REST servers. It does, however, provide the Jest system for checking.
This boilerplate is ideal for those who want to get a react native project up and running quickly.
You should be able to build a new project with the following command after meeting all of the prerequisites specified on this project’s page:
npx react–native init MyApp —template react–native–template–typescript
Conclusion:
We discussed some React Native boilerplates above that make developing our app a lot simpler. If you have any serious platform problems, React Native is currently one of the top options for most use cases. At Hire React Native Developers, we will assist you in bringing your smartphone app to a high level of growth.

COMPLETED: Metro 2033 Redux
I first learned about Metro with the release of Last Light (Middle Game) in 2012/13. I was impressed with the hardships the Ukrainian developers underwent to see their art realized. So I wanted to support them. But honestly, I just didn't get into Metro: Last Light. It constantly assumes the player knows more than I did. I just...didn't get it.
I had, at some point, intended to buy Metro 2033 Redux/Last Light combo pack for PS4. I can't remember if that happened, but I do remember trying the first level of 2033. It...was confusing. Didn't quite hook me.
But then Google Stadia made Metro: Exodus a freebie. I was impressed that the past games had been successful enough to see a sequel. Not only that, but a sequel that looked as good and epic as Exodus did. When I finally played the game on Stadia, I loved it!! It made me fall in love with Metro as a whole. So now that both Metro 2033 and Last Light are free on Stadia, I'm ready to really give them a chance.
Instead of being a diary, just gonna treat this more like a "review".
GAMEPLAY
Metro is a pretty straightforward shooter. But it "feels'' good. I constantly feel like I'm in a post-apocalyptic Battlefield 3--which I love--so that works for me! The game is a bit linear. That's kind of a problem and kind of not. On the one hand, I rarely got confused or had to explore "dead ends'' when just trying to find my way out of a dimly lit, post apocalyptic world. But half the action bits are literally you shooting while riding a handcart...so it's truly an "on rails shooter"! There's not a ton of enemy variety, and the scenarios with monsters are usually just being stuck in a medium-to-large space while waves of duplicate monsters charge at you. It's almost more annoying than tense.
The gun customization is kind of weird. It didn't quite make sense in the 1/3 of Last Light I played. Especially when every enemy drops a gun, often with its own customizations. I was confused--why would I spend resources to customize a weapon just to lose all that work when I switch it out? Same issue here. I still customized a little bit, but my favorite shotgun was actually found on the ground. I think Exodus fixed this, as once a part was "made" you could basically switch out parts when at a customize station: cost free. (I think.)
Supplies were also an issue. When fighting monsters, the monsters never drop ammo. So it's high cost and ZERO reward. Also, to move through high-radiation areas--you have to wear a mask that takes damage and requires the switching out of filters. It's "realistic", but with scarce supplies--it means you can end up not being able to progress in the game.
And that's what happened.
I got lost during the second-to-last level and used up all of my filters. When I started the last level, I kept dying after 30 seconds. Even though I was surrounded by 3-4 other soldiers, no one would give me a filter! I had to replay the previous level, and really save my filter so I could survive the final combat.
(Side note: At one point, early on, I thought I was looking at a companion soldier's backpack when the game prompted me to pick up supplies, and I did. I thought this meant I could get supplies from my companions' backpacks. This is not the case, but should be!!)
THEN I was at the final sequence and there's a scripted event of a monster attacking a companion. The companion shouts: "Shoot it!", but I couldn't because I was out of Ammo. There was no ammo in this entire sequence...not a single bullet. Nor were there any filters. The game sets the player up for failure. Even with a chapter restart/load from the main menu, they don’t even give the player a starter kit. (I totally forgot I had throwing knives and that’s how killed the last monster.)
STORY
Compared to most games (like a high 90%) Metro 2033 cares about telling a story. Plot-wise, I was very confused. I rarely knew the specific reasons I was moving from one location to another. And I totally misunderstood the overall plot that we were “under attack” from the dark ones and were looking for military assistance. I thought the character’s home-base was just under attack by monsters. I had to read some Fandom Wiki pages to make sense of what the point was. I really want to read the book still, so I’ll wait to see how that goes. That said, I think the strength of the story is in the characters. You get to meet a few different people throughout, with different personalities and personal goals. In this post apocalyptic world, it can get lonely--so it’s always a welcomed treat when you have one or more companions to listen to you. It was a little challenging to keep track of who was who, at times, but I liked most the folks. It’s also interesting that most of these characters, despite being military, didn’t have the typical Alpha Male, toxic masculinity, and single mindedness of characters in most American shooters.
GRAPHICS
Graphics were pretty good. Mostly it’s the lighting. It hides the defects, but the textures, models, and environments still look great for a game made by such a small group of people. By not having a lot of cutscenes with cinematic cameras--feels like they put their resources into what needed the most attention. And the lighting was great. Really set the mood, and the lens flares (unlike how JJ Abrams uses them) were a nice touch.
CONCLUSION:
This is a thoughtful shooter that tries to tell a story and reward non-people-murdering gameplay (there’s stealth and non-lethal takedowns!!!). The atmosphere is great and I can’t wait to play Last Night. Clearly there’s frustrating flaws, but I can overlook them. The game did remind me of the moodier levels of Resistance and Resistance 2. I kind of wish there was an open world metro that played more like Skyrim...maybe even some Co-op would be cool!

Learning to Use React
Tumblr media
React and Redux helped us keep application state manageable in our probabilistic programming prototypes.
For every topic we research at Fast Forward Labs, we create prototypes to show how the technology can be applied to make great products. Finite, stand-alone projects, our prototype web applications are great opportunities to experiment with new front-end tech. In our latest report on probabilistic programming, I used the React javascript library to create the interface with Redux for managing the data state of UI components. This setup was extremely helpful in prototyping: by keeping the application state in one place with Redux, it was much easier to switch components in and out as the prototype direction changed. The setup (which also involved Webpack, Babel and learning ES6 syntax features) did feel overwhelming at times, though new tools and tutorials made the process much smoother than my experience using React on the previous Text Summarization prototype. Once everything was rolling, it was the most enjoyable front-end coding experience I’ve ever had.
When Aditya, our Data Visualization and Prototyping Intern, started with us this fall, I asked him to get familiar with React and Redux (and Webpack, and ES6 features…) in preparation for future products. Now that he’s experimented with it, we decided to document what has been useful and not so useful in the process.
– Grant
The Process
Grant: First I sent Aditya some helpful resources:
How to Build a Todo App Using React, Redux, and Immutable.js
Getting Started with Redux
React Starter Kit
Aditya: I was familiar with Javascript but had never used a Front-end framework, so first read the React documentation, and proceeded fairly quickly to the sitepoint tutorial. The sitepoint tutorial (about Redux) really tripped me up because it used a lot of unfamiliar syntax. A web search for alternate intros to Redux just ended up confusing me more.
Fortunately I found the egghead videos by Dan Abramov, which make no assumptions about the learner’s prior knowledge, and explain things like ES6 syntax that might throw off new learners.
Grant: While I later realized it was too much to drop on Aditya all at once, I suggested the sitepoint tutorial as a starting point because I like how it shows how Redux works across an entire React app. Abramov’s Egghead videos are great, but I got impatient with them because I wanted to incorporate Redux into the React app straight away. The sitepoint article helped me figure out how to structure Redux to adapt it into the prototype I was working on – but that was after I had gone through several other tutorials and banged my head against the code in various ways.
Aditya: Eventually, I realized that my confusion had little to do with the tutorials themselves. I really needed to go back and iron out my understanding of React before jumping into Redux. I realized this as I came across Abramov’s You might not need Redux, where he stresses the importance of learning to think in React before attempting to learn Redux. I took a step back to introspect and indeed found that my React knowledge hadn’t really seeped in yet.
Tumblr media
When the creator of Redux encourages you to think carefully about whether you need to use it, it’s best to listen to him.
Grant: From the beginning I debated whether to introduce React alone or together with Redux. In retrospect, I should have started with React alone. I was anxious to get Redux in early because adopting it had made my own React development process simpler and more enjoyable. Especially when dealing with APIs (thanks in large part to Soham Kamani’s A simplified approach to calling APIs with Redux), Redux helped me maintain a readily understandable model of what was happening where – versus the spaghetti-ish ComponentDidMount situation I found myself in with React. (Note: You can have a perfectly reasonable set-up without Redux if you structure your React app well, which I’m not convinced I did. The point is, the opinionated structure of Redux was super helpful for developing and maintaining a manageable set-up.)
That’s my rationalization for introducing Redux at the start. But as Aditya points out, it was too many new moving parts at once! Much better to get a handle on React first -- and even work with the messiness Redux helps reduce -- than have the whole system dropped on you all at once. I knew this in principle, but this process was a good reminder.
Aditya: Thinking in React was a great resource to deepen my understanding. It teaches concepts by showing one the processes used to design a React app: I like this approach because it can be overwhelming to read scores of definitions with no idea how they ultimately interplay to form the grand picture. ‘Thinking in React’ helped me break down the development process into discrete steps that made the fundamental concepts easier to understand.
Take, for example, the concepts of props and states in React. Both were well defined in the standard documentation, but when I started making a simple app on my own, I was a bit confused. What part of my app would be a state? What would be a prop? Should I write the parent component first or begin with the leaves? We might say I knew the words but not the grammar. ‘Thinking in React’ introduced a framework to help think about their code architecture.
I’m very impressed by the React documentation, and it’s still the primary source for most of my React-related questions. As it should be. There are a lot of third-party resources (most behind a paywall) that are so fragmented that learning these technologies can be jarring. Third-party resources should exist, and are even required in the ecosystem, but those who make technology are also responsible for explaining it to users. Kudos to the React community for not only making a great technology but also by giving a damn about good documentation. Providing a great number of examples (whether in codepens or code blocks), a way to quick start ‘hello-world’ programs (such as Create React App), and a way to think about process is key to a good developer experience. It’s no coincidence that libraries, like D3.js and React, that provide that kind of an experience are so successful and widely adopted.
Conclusions
Grant: There’s a lot of worry and excitement about the current state of Javascript development. I’m mainly excited. There is a pretty big learning curve to this stuff, but once you get going tools like React and Redux can make front-end development a lot more fun. They enabled me to much more quickly develop and experiment with different interface components in our probabilistic programming prototype. Sometimes I was surprised (in a good way!) by how different components worked in combination, and I took inspiration from those interactions to build out a feature or interaction I hadn’t planned on.
That said, there is definitely work to be done to help people with that learning curve. We touched on some starter materials in this post. One thing we didn’t discuss is the React Starter Pack, which include the Create React App command-line tool. One of the biggest headaches I had in my earlier attempts to get started with React was getting the development environment setup. The pipeline created within Create React App made it much easier to get up and running smoothly.
Even with all the great work being done, it can still be quite overwhelming to jump into. It helps me to read about others’ process and experiences (especially their mistakes and lessons learned). Hopefully this post is helpful to others.
Aditya: I think it's really important for people building these technologies to start thinking about documentation at a fundamental level. We are facing an avalanche of new technologies everyday and developers need to be mindful that not everyone comes to the table with the same stack or the same level of experience. What a Senior Software Engineer expects from documentation is probably going to differ from that of a college sophomore.
At Fast Forward Labs, we work on cutting edge machine learning technologies, but remain mindful that this radically new ecosystem, where knowledge is concentrated in the hands of a few, can lead to socio-economic inequalities. Lowering barriers to entry is critically important as the technology ecosystem evolves at an increasingly rapid clip.
