The young must grow old, Whilst old ones grow older,  And cowards will shrink, As the bold grow bolder. Courage may blossom in quiet hearts, For who can tell where bravery starts? Truth is a song, oft lying unsung, Some mother bird, protecting her young, Those who lay down their lives for friends,  The echo rolls onward, it seldom ends.  Who never turned and ran, but stayed?  This is a warrior born, not made! Living in peace, aye many a season, Calm in life and sound in reason, ’Til evil arrives, a wicked horde, Driving a warrior to pick up his sword, The challenger rings then, straight and fair, Justice is with us, beware. Beware!

My partner and I made Hare's Pawspring Vegetable Soup and Crispy Cheese'n'Onion Hogbake from The Redwall Cookbook! Served with buttered sourdough bread, sautéed mushrooms, and hot mint tea.

We wanted to make stuffed mushrooms, which I believe are also in the cookbook, but it was too much for one day.
I wasn't sure how the hogbake would turn out, but it was really delicious! I also really loved the shredded cabbage and the string beans in the soup.
This food was so yummy, I enjoyed it so much!!! I'm working on learning how to cook this year, so some meals can feel really intimidating to make. The recipes in this cookbook are wonderful, though. Because they're aimed for kids, they don't feel hard to make. They're straightforward and still very delicious and rich in taste.
Plus, I felt like I was spending time in Redwall making these recipes. In a way, it felt familiar. The Redwall books never miss an opportunity to praise the importance and beauty of food, and they are right. Cooking this meal was really special :) Plus plus- I didn't realize this beforehand, but they're all vegetarian!
Thank you for reading ♥️

I hope you don't mind that I took your tags :)
One of my favorite things in Redwall is when Martin the Warrior gives someone a dream but makes sure they don't remember the dream until The Right Moment, even if it's like, days later.
Sometimes he even tells them in the dream "hey you'll remember the rest of this on Thursday" so they remember part of the dream and that there was more, but not all of it.
One of my other favorite things in Redwall is when Martin the Warrior fuckign possesses someone for a little bit bc they weren't doing anything and they needed to do something so well guess ole Martin will have to step in AGAIN.

I want to just make a running list of all my favourite moments in Legend of Luke because I think it’s the best novel in the series, tied with Martin the Warrior. 🥹🥹

Cluny is a legit name though, I think. Anyways it was used by G.A. Henty in his 1880s novel In Freedom’s Cause, so when I first found Redwall I thought Cluny the Scourge was a Scottish rat.
redwall revival is in the air & i just want to say those books are weird. like i enjoyed them too but they're weird. why is the rat named cluny. what's up with that, brian. why did you name your first scary villain creature for a monastic reform movement from the middle ages. did you have some kind of bone to pick with bernard of clairvaux? i'm sure he'd find a bone to pick with you, he was that type. but for real what was with the religious politics in those books. was it just english nationalism? is that the secret sauce???

i'm rereading Redwall and to absolutely nobody's surprise, my current thought is what a SWR Redwall AU would be like. Anyway Zeb is a badger (obvious reasons), Ahsoka is a wildcat (because their cheek fluffs and ear tufts kinda look like lekku and montrals), Ezra is a squirrel (he has squirrel energy. to me.), and Sabine is a stoat (white fur in winter, could by dyed with berries and stuff, also Mandalorians traditionally tend towards antagonistic roles in Star Wars and stoats are a 'villain' species in Redwall.) Currently taking suggestions for Kanan and Hera but I'm thiiiiinking maybe a flying squirrel for Hera. Pretty sure Chopper would be a very angry sparrow though

I planted her gently last summer, All in quiet evening shade. Within an orchard bower Her little bed I made. Alone I sat by my window As autumn leaves did fall; They formed a russet cover for My Rose of Old Redwall.
Through winter’s dreary days she slept Beneath the cold, dark ground, When all the earth was silent. White snows lay deep around, Bright stars came out above her, As to the moon I’d call, “Take pity on my dearest one, My Rose of Old Redwall.”
How the grass grew green and misty, Soft fell the rain that spring; Her dainty budded head arose, And made my poor heart sing. Then summer brought her just one bloom, So white, so sweet and tall, With ne’er a thorn to sully her, My Rose of Old Redwall. —Brian Jacques, Loamhedge
“Rose Song” from Loamhedge!
This song is sung by Martha Braebuck for Bragoon and Saro before they leave Redwall Abbey to journey to Loamhedge.
“Bright stars came out above her, as to the moon I’d call, take pity on my dearest one, My Rose of Old Redwall” Lyrics by Brian Jacques, and Music composed by Billy Maher!

Thoughts after reading Martin the Warrior for the second time ♥️
- I haven’t read many books that can transport you into a “too beautiful to be true” setting like Noonvale. Anne of Green Gables is the only equivalent. I don’t know how he does it because the descriptions are so cliché or basic, yet somehow you FEEL the peace and love and perfection…
- Felldoh. Oh my heart, Felldoh. He breaks me every time 😭 I want so much more for him, yet somehow he feels destined to his story. He’s such a great guy, really, when he isn’t consumed with justice and protection. I love him in juxtaposition to Martin. Both are warriors, both hate Badrang and intend to free the world from him, yet Martin has a larger nature that allows him to let go briefly, while Felldoh is obsessed. Even if Felldoh went with Martin & Rose to Noonvale he’d still be obsessed. I love Brome’s wise words about paths of vengeance, but also Felldoh’s & Martin’s wisdom in insisting we can’t just ignore evil and run from it but destroy it or not only will it hurt others as it hurt us, it will spread like a cancer.
- Martin, by the way, is something else. I don’t know why I love him so much but he’s amazing. Really. Such a fascinating, admirable character. I see why he’s the guardian of Redwall.
- I love the talk about bravery between Felldoh & Brome, about how not everyone can kill, and it’s good to be innocent, and being a healer is just as important and brave.
- Also…. poor little Juniper who gave his life… 💔 And I love Ballaw. He’s not as amusing as most hares but he’s good and noble and his words about stages and curtains fit things so WELL. And I have to mention Keyla, who’s absolutely amazing himself!!
- The last few pages are terribly beautiful. I still don’t understand why SHE had to die… really. I know the plot demands it in a way, but… why? She can’t really be… she’s too vibrant to just cease. But oh, Martin, my heart hurts for you so much. And his words about memories… ♥️
- There’s things and parts in the Redwall books that are silly and cliché and poorly written, and remind me he wrote these for kids. Then there’s some supremely awful and beautiful bits that remind me why I adore these books and why Martin is my favourite of them all…
- and the Treehouse TV show is so good for this book ♥️

Looked it up out of curiousity--apparently Vitch is a real name (well, surname)! It's a Slavic name based on the -vic/vich suffix. I don't know if Brian Jacques knew that, but it's one explanation.
