Lego Monkie Kid Season 1 (Show Recommendation)

Goku voices Sun Wukong and Sokka voices M.K, and the animation really had me like:

Pros:

The main character is THE MAIN CHARACTER, and he learns good lessons and trains. 

Good choreography in the fights

Great side characters, including villains

Voice acting is well done

Art direction is amazing & colorful for such a simple artstyle 

Set pieces are 100% eye candy, the art director did their due diligence. Almost all the establishing shots look like cartoonish concept art.

5-6 titular characters, not 20, not 30, not 50 that are ALL the main protagonist. Less than 7 in this show get focus. 

Mei (Titular Female lead) is very fun and likable, she’s full of so much energy. Not only is she in the action in Episode 0 but by Episode 3 she gets more characterization and an upgrade so she can get even more involved. (Won’t say any more tho)

Her character arc isn’t revolving around liking the main character, it’s regarding personal situations pertaining to her life. Not her life revolving around what someone else does.

She’s allowed to be cool and get W’s, not just the boys 24/7

Mei & MK have the most pure & cute platonic relationship, something people/society/kids need to see more of. We need more platonic.

(Now, be advised, i just finished Season 1 so things could change between them but seriously M&MK have interacted so much whatever they choose to do for them as a couple or NOT do, works regardless because they have an actual relationship vs this shit:)

Than Carrot dangling “will they, won’t they’s” for 6-7 years

Plus, her Jumpsuit getup screams a cool fusion between White Ranger & Green Ranger = Mei is who you get.

Monkey King is 100% BADASS, lore accurate feats/representation of what this Monke is capable of. 

Sun Wukong China’s Superman for a reason, and if nobody considers him to be, ya’ll really should. 

There’s a reason why Goku’s base character traits took notes from both Superman and Monkey King

Cons:

Breakneck pacing (because it’s 11min, and the style is very fluid; The content is coming at you a little fast)

It is a kid’s show, so it’s not going to get super edgy or show serious blood or anything like that. That doesn’t mean people aren’t dropping the word “Kill”, this show gets serious, edgy. But not super edgy. 

(The writing is good despite it gearing to kids to buy Lego toys, Avatar style. Just because it’s family oriented doesn’t mean it can’t compete with Anime, boom. That’s what matters)

Just because it’s a “kid’s show” doesn’t mean lower the bar, doesn’t mean be lazy and treat your audience like they’re stupid because they’re children. And Monkie Kid did the exact opposite of settling for less.

Again, the episodes are 11min, so if you don’t like short watches, watch the show anyway. Trust me, it’s a good time.

The show’s aesthetic is like Rise of the TMNT (Which i’ll admit, i was a hater of due to my admiration for the 2012 take. But i’m going to give it a chance, i’ve seen some clips of the show, and i actually like what i see.)

Otherwise, the breakneck pacing which is personally NOT my style, but it’s not a deal breaker. Especially since this show is adapting a source material i admire: Journey To The West

Jokes are pretty good, wholesome show, the action is directed like i was choreographing this shit, just look at this gif:

These ARE LEGOS people, why are they really throwing hands on par with ANIME fight scenes (With the difference being if you pause it, you’re not looking at a derp frame, ALL THE FRAMES are for the most part consistent quality)

And the sound design, HOLY shit man.

I have at least a 3GB+ folder just for SFX for my edits, i love a good explosion and shockwave effect- so when i say it’s got good acoustics, that means it’s good.

First time through this show tho, Episode 0 is basically a movie (MAR 2023), starting Season 2 soon

First episodes per season are like 30min to an hour, all the episodes after are standard 11min stories- PER Season.

As of MARCH 2023, only 3 Seasons, so far. 

It’s not 11/10 or anything, but it’s a really good show, recommended.

Fujibayashi Genya: Mental health & Personality Analysis

So, we'll start by taking a deep look into his childhood and mental health, and lastly analyze his personality using the five factor model and a few additional criteria. Let's begin :)

At the beginning of his route, Genya is introduced as a laid-back, lazy shinobi with inscrutable motives. Gradually, we figure more and more of his demeanor being a mask, which he uses both as a coping mechanism as well as means to keep his feelings and motivations behind a veil.

Later on, we find out that it was his love for Sakuya and death of their mother that has forced Genya to change drastically – which is where we will start our digging.

Childhood & Mental health

Judging from the small pieces of chapters in which we see the Fujibayashi twins and MC interact in the past, as well as Genya’s statements, it is clear that the twins were neglected, yet unlikely emotionally abused. Adding to the stability of their psyche in the earliest years was their close relationship, and thus ability to replace the emotional care they sought from their parents.

Coming to the first event that forces Genya to change - At a still very young age, he witnesses his mother's death during an attack on the village. Not only did she fall while protecting him, but also, those following were her last words:

Assuming that it was most likely Genya’s first time openly receiving emotional care from his mother, and that the chief did not seem to care about her death (simply disposed of the body, apparently), the causes of the event resulted in PSTD, which became chronic for the rest of his life (as it is a common occurrence with children).

A short time after that, we are shown that Genya proceeds to focus all of his care and attention on Sakuya: Trains with him, renounces his own needs to let his twin have more options, and even motivates MC to grow closer to Sakuya, although it was somewhere implied that he himself was 'drawn to her sunny smile'.

Being able to do so and direct positive energy at someone he loves has helped Genya to cope with the incident, although he could not tell a soul about his mother’s last words - The knowledge would hurt his twin, In Genya’s opinion. Having to speculate about such outcomes, think many steps ahead, keep his feelings behind a lock, and due to possible symptoms of PSTD, Genya has matured quickly; and it was more than visible in his behavior.

Next, we know that the Mitsuba have betrayed Fujibayashi village as the twins were approximately 10 years old. A while after that, they had to accomplish a special, long-term mission in order to become fully-pledged shinobi. Beside the fact that he himself has suffered from his own (disposing of bodies ‘as if they were worthless’), he noticed how much suffering Sakuya’s mission has caused his twin. He understood that his brother will only be able to cope with the trauma if he was to run from his feelings.

Being Sakuya’s ‘childhood hero’, as Sakuya himself has stated, Genya knew that if he were to express negative opinions and feelings toward the village, his twin would break his own resolve and agree with him. Thinking their fate unvoidable, Genya has made a choice to break their connection by being the opposite of what a shinobi should be, but still protect and support Sakuya from the shadows.

Personality

Now let’s take a look at Genya’s personality in general, since until now, we have been only focusing on his family.

I will be using the five factor model, which has a scoring system, to do so, although we have to keep in mind that his trauma and personal experiences play big roles in these traits:

1. Openness to experience

Low score. Genya prefers routine, and is wary of uncertainty and the unknown. I have mentioned at the beginning that Genya uses his laid-back lifestyle as a coping mechanism - Independence and space give him an opportunity to breathe. However, he generally does not run from his feelings and is well aware of who and what he cares about.

2. Conscientiousness

High score. He is aware of his actions and their consequences, and has a sense of responsibility, regardless of how much he claims not to do so. Genya exhibits goal-oriented behavior every time it truly matters (grumbling aside). His missions are organized and practically executed.

3. Extroversion

Mid score. Genya is an ambivert (neither an introvert nor extravert). He enjoys being alone, thinking and reflecting, just as much as he enjoys socializing and meeting new people.

4. Agreeableness

High score. Genya is co-operative, and willing to help others in times of need. He respects hardworking individuals, dislikes being involved in arguments, seeks internal and external state of peace. Levels of agreeableness tend to increase with age.

5. Neuroticism

Low score. Genya is able to remain calm in response to stressful situations, and view problems in proportion to their importance. As a result, he tends to worry about such problems to a lesser extent. Of course, this excludes extreme situations, like losing a loved one (in regard to his frustration in the route endings).

Since the model does not cover all that can be interpreted, let’s add a few more criteria:

6. Behavior

Genya tries to cover up many of his positive traits with a mask of a lazy, money-grubbing and disrespectful shinobi, as we all well know. Doing so leaves him more freedom, forces others to lower their expectations, and allows him to expectantly sidestep minor duties in case of an emergency. This, of, course, serves his goals and routines very well.

7. Morality

Genya has a deep understanding and a broad view of the world. He understands the role of each person, that every individual is shaped by the environment, and while he naturally opposes to being a shinobi, he does not proceed to immediately judge or dislike someone of his own kind, although doing otherwise would be a much easier task.

This could be explained by his world-view as well. He mentions that he is ‘like a bird in a cage’, and the same could most likely be said of all shinobi, in his opinion. Because he views the shadows as a place of grief, there is a chance he is less consumed by guilt for killing those who share his origins.

Pride Month - Writer

Hello everyone.- So a year has come and gone since the last pride, and I’ve done a bit of self-questioning in that time. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m (MOST LIKELY) an asexual demiromantic, and I’ve... Half-opened up to my parents about it. They know I’m asexual, but they’re a bit on the stricter side of Christianity because ‘oh you’re just being celibate’. I’m fine with them claiming this because it means less stress in the house.

nickname:          His partners may call him Esti from time to time. He has no problem with that, and would only raise an eyebrow the first time they use it.

romantic orientation:          Demiromantic, with a preference for men. He also has no real care nor often spares a thought towards a relationship. He needs to be close to the person for any feelings to start developing. When it happens, however, and he begins falling in love, we l l. He might try to run from it for a while, I won’t lie. 

preferred pet names:           Doesn’t care for them, but he won’t stop his partners from giving them to him unless it’s a little too much if you know what I mean. Like there’s pet names, and then there’s just being ridiculous.

opinion on true love:          Didn’t believe in it until meeting certain partners, Aymeric especially. They fit as a couple. They work. And God, he’d never admit to it out loud, but yes. With him, he absolutely thinks it’s possible. I actually have a lot of thoughts on his relationship with Aymeric that I want to write out in a post, and this is something I want to talk about there. But yes. With certain partners where they just fit, he does.  

That said, before his possession, he’d just shrug at the thought [ I think it needs to be said he would never enter a relationship with someone before sb ].

opinion on love at first sight:         Doesn’t believe in it for himself/ Probably scoffed at the thought at the start, but he’s seen enough evidence to kinda change his mind on the matter in regards to other people. For him, he’s just not interested enough in relationships and needs a close bond with the person for feelings to be able to develop. There is no coup de foudre for Estinien.

how ‘romantic’ are they?:           He has his own way of showing it? He’s not great at it vocally, though you’d likely get an ‘I love you’ here and there from him. But usually, he’d do it through acts? Straightening someone’s tie, taking their hand without a word, complimenting them on things, making sure to look out for their well-being, etc. He’d also occasionally leave flowers for his partner or send them things he thinks they might like, though would prefer for the other not to comment on it. 

ideal physical traits:           Smaller height than he is, regardless of gender. He also likes his partners to be fit. He doesn’t care when it comes to hair types [ long / short / the colour ], and he’s accepting of most races. 

ideal personality traits:         Strong, confident individuals. Someone who isn’t afraid to take charge. 

unattractive physical traits:           Can’t think of any physical traits he would overly dislike. I will say he’s not likely to get involved with any lalas, however [ he likes height differences, but that’s a bit too much for him personally ]. 

unattractive personality traits:         Childish individuals are an absolute no-go. When he’s in a relationship, he wants to feel like it’s between two adults. He does not want to play nanny to his partner, haha. Lazy people who aren’t willing to stick their thumb out and get to work would also be rejected by him. For him, personality is a major factor in the people he ends up dating. 

ideal date:           Something private, for them and them alone. He doesn’t like peering eyes and wouldn’t want people commenting on what they have. This also applies to modern AUs. He will go out to places if his partner expresses the desire to [ unless it’s something like a ball or an overly large gathering, though they usually know not to suggest those ], and will propose events / ideas himself if he believes the other would enjoy it - if they refuse, it’s no real loss to him. They can just stay in together for the night. 

do they have a type?:        Not exactly? His partners all have different traits and are quite distinct from each other. They are all, however, extremely strong and capable individuals, so perhaps that could play into it a little bit. He does usually tend to prefer elezen when it comes to men, that I will say. He doesn’t really care so much when it comes to women. 

average relationship length:          A lifetime LOL. With Aymeric, for example, he does eventually end up marrying him. Same can be said for Fuso, and they have a family together. 

preferred non-sexual intimacy:         Just being able to spend time with the person he’s involved with is enough ngl. Their time tends to be precious enough as it is, so he’ll take what he can get. 

commitment level:           He’s not going to be interested in anyone else, I can assure you. Once he’s in love with someone, that’s it. Eyes will not wander elsewhere, and he’d look down on people who do decide to cheat tbh. His example comes from his parents, who were extremely loving and dedicated to each other. 

opinion of public affection:         Not keen on it, though it’s only because he doesn’t want people to see him becoming mildly embarrassed when his partner does it to him. He’s not against holding his partner’s hand once he’s grown in their relationship, though kissing isn’t something he’d like too much.

Permissions

Shipping?  Yes.  Singleship per verse with limited verses.  Please note - as stated on the rules page, orientation is typically listed as what the muses think they are.  Please note that sleeping with someone =/= shipping here.

Duplicates? Multiple ‘Yuis’?  What about character that aren’t on the dedicated castmates list?  Yes.  You can thrust Shuu at Shuu.  There’s also no issue with duplicates of canon, crossover, etc. characters that Shuu is already interacting with.  You want it, you got it.   To prevent destroying the validity of duplicate muses, I will sometimes think of things as ‘A Kanato did this’ instead of ‘Kanato did this’, which is a very subtle difference but prevents another muse from having to deal with the blame of an event they were not responsible for.  This will only be differentiated as necessary within writing.  I repeat: all duplicate muses will be treated with respect, not as ‘fakes’.  Any Sakamaki brother is a brother of his, regardless of how many Kanatos there are (for example).  We’re just going to, uh, slide past that as often as possible (and occasionally make jokes).

Multiple Shuus will be treated as though they’d somehow wandered into one’s world or the other via some enchanted, strange object or doorway in the Sakamaki household.  This allows them to interact, but prevents the concept that one is a ‘true’ Subaru over the other.  You have been warned.

Fighting?  A-Okay.  I’ve done a lot of fighting roleplay but it was in the past and I’m way more interested in the storytelling of it.  It’s better that we discuss the end result beforehand for smoother sailing, but we can improv it as well.  I do this from a storytelling perspective.

Harming? A-Okay!  Just be aware that this muse may harm or kill yours in turn!

Killing? A-Okay!  Please be aware, however, that should the need or desire to continue the verse arise, the death scene will be considered a what-if.  In addition, it is very difficult to kill this muse due to the pureblood resurrection abilities.

Can we send shippy memes / etc.? Sure, we can still explore what-ifs, drabbles and oneshot threads, but the main focus will be on the storyline here!

Can we know Yui has Cordelia’s heart, is possibly turning into a vampire, is surrounded by vampires, etc. and reference this to Shuu? On a case-by-case basis.  It should be discovered organically if it’s not something your character would be able to know already.  There’s plenty of situations where this would make sense.

Can we know about Shuu’s past before interacting?  No, not unless you have genuine reasons for it like being one of his brothers.

Can we have characters comment on the events of the timeline? Yes, if they “catch sight of”, “overhear a rumor”, “a familiar saw X”, or any other sensible reason, then characters can be aware of and comment on events.  I wholly encourage characters participate in Shuu’s life!  Please tell the story with me!

Can we rescue Yui Komori from the Sakamaki household? Unlikely.  At best, if you succeed in the first place, it’s entirely likely that they will find you, they will take Yui back, and they will kill one or both of you for this.  Or the Mukamis might take advantage of the situation!  Obviously, the exception here is the Mukamis, who are entirely expected to attempt this from time to time.

Can we reference interactions we’ve had with your Kanato, etc. to Shuu?  I mean...sure?  If you want?  I’m fine with using my muses for plot and timeline advancements for myself and those I interact with (within limits) but I’d also prefer to not be my Ayato’s Kanato and vice versa, so this would probably be limited.  You can still act like what’s happened has happened, though.

Shuu is a handsome young man with slightly curled blond hair as well as light, ocean blue eyes which he inherited from his mother.  He has black studs on both of his ears.  He is always seen with his MP3 player attached to a wire which is wrapped around his neck and with the earphones always in his ears.

In HAUNTED DARK BRIDAL, he usually wears a light blue sweater over a dark blue shirt with dark pants.

In MORE, BLOOD, he wears a blue dress shirt with a white shirt underneath and brown pants.

His school uniform consists of the black school jacket draped over his shoulders and a beige sweater with a slightly unbuttoned white dress shirt.  He wears it with the black uniform pants and brown dress shoes.

Personality

Generally the epitome of a lazy panda that barely has the interest or energy to chew on the bamboo it’s holding.

Ever since events in his childhood, Shuu is apathetic and disengaged from life and those around him.  He neither wants to gain any interest in anything nor take any responsibility in looking after his five younger brothers and their home.  Though they tend to quiet, listen and obey when he does speak up, he will complain about having to deal with their problems.  

There is one great love in Shuu’s life: music.  And adult Drama CDs, sometimes.  But mostly music.  He’s always listening to it even when he takes a bath!  His preference is classical music.

Shuu has so little motivation that he does almost nothing, often needing to be persuaded and cajoled into actions that are necessary for him.  Seeking attention out with him despite his lack of interest in participating in the world around him will often be met with perversion and lazy harrassment.  

A man who gets too attached who would prefer not to feel any of it in the first place.

History

CHILDHOOD. Heavily restricted and controlled, Shuu was suffocated by the expectations placed upon him.  He ran away from home and met a human boy, Edgar, with whom he became friends.  Able to run between the demon and human worlds via underground passages, Shuu ran off to play with Edgar frequently.  Reiji, Shuu’s younger brother, destroyed Edgar’s village in a fire in the hopes of killing two birds with one stone: impressing his mother and removing Shuu’s happiness.  Edgar died.

Shuu blamed himself for Edgar’s death and came to fear fire.  With continued jabs from Reiji on his uselessness and pressure to become the Sakamaki heir from his mother, Shuu withdrew further and further into himself until he would do nothing unless pushed to by Reiji.

NEAR CURRENT.  Karlheinz manipulated circumstances to keep tossing experimental sacrificial brides at his children.  None could endure the blood loss, physical and emotional torment.  The sacrificial brides were too fragile and the Sakamakis broke their toys.  

CURRENT. A single sacrificial bride is surviving and enduring: Yui Komori.  Whichever brother obtains her will become the Sakamaki heir.  Without directly entering into a “relationship” with any of the Sakamakis, she endures her stay there.

Hot take that exclusionists are NOT ready for but

I cant stand when exclusionists go "well we built our community you guys are just being lazy and trying to leech instead of putting in the effort!!" Because it's so fucking wrong and pretentious

First of all, no. Yall didnt "build the community". You guys had no part in that. People who share your identities did, before most of yall were even considered let alone conceived. A bunch of bitter ass 15 year olds absolutely didnt make the community, and yall dont have residual knowledge on how communities work just from being gay. Im sorry but its true. If anything, aces and aros do more actual community building than exclusionists because we have to constantly tell people again and again what our orientation is, dispell misinformation, make positivity for ourselves to combat hate, make terms to describe our experiences, and more.

Secondly, no part of the "inclusionist agenda" involves leeching. Aces and aros being included in the community isnt going to work any different than any other group being in the community being included. That is to say that while we are separated we all share general community resources and support. Leeching off of the community implies we are going out of our way to take from someone else when that's not at all the case. Yall say it like we want being ace to be an all access pass to any community or some shit.

And finally, this isnt laziness. If we were so lazy, you wouldn't find countless YouTube channels and blogs (not just on tumblr either) dedicated to asexuality 101. You wouldn't see any aces marching in pride parades, you wouldn't see any pamphlets or infographics that talk about aces, there wouldn't be an ace awareness week, you wouldn't know about the ace flag, and you wouldn't even be in ace discourse. Yall would think "aces arent LGBT and we wouldn't do anything except for maybe a few people thinking that's not fair. We are putting in the work and the time. That's why there are books about asexuality, that's why there are ace activists writing articles and going to schools to talk about their experiences and orientation. Effort is occurring. Yall just dont like it because we arent putting in effort to do what you want.

You say make a separate community. We have already been doing that. Every LGBT+ community is separated but allied regardless of how yall like to soup us together for the express purpose of excluding aces. What I face for being gay is different than what another member of the community might face for being bi. My being trans is different than lesbian experiences. My being intersex gives me different experiences than other perisex trans people!

This community as we know it today was built not just by the gays, but on the backs of trans women of color decades ago. It was supported and shaped from people from all walks of life and different identities as time went on, with the express purpose to be more inclusive and to acknowledge that theres no one LGBT+ experience. Literally every group in the community other than cis white gays and lesbians were excluded from the community and had to make the community except them and even now fucking cis bisexuals get intracommunity hate. If you want to call people ahistorical actually sit down and acknowledge the shitty rocky road the community was built upon and the fact the community is constantly changing. Realize that not doing things the way you want them doesnt mean things arent happening.

And to be quite honest at this point I'm not even trying to "change your mind" or make yall accept aces and aros as LGBT+ by virtue of their ace and aroness. But a lot of the main arguments you have against it are severely flawed and come from a place of either misunderstanding or deliberate misrepresentation of facts. I just want your arguments to be better instead of looking like whiny complaining because an acey stole the color purple or the moon.

31 Days of Spiritual Journaling, Day 3

Prompts courtesy of @tea-rabbits. This one’s a little less involved than the other two, but I’m trying to follow the “journaling” aspect here and just write what comes to mind rather than what’s “interesting” or “worth writing.” I’m hoping I’ll be able to get more in the habit of writing every day this way; removing the pressure from myself to write something GOOD every day and focusing on just WRITING every day is much healthier, I think! 

Day 3: Teach or describe one of your key spiritual practices.

Each morning, I start my day with some divinatory work and meditation. This is what I consider to be my key spiritual practice since I do it every day and it keeps me from getting sort of lazy with my spirituality. As I’ll talk more about my personal theories and beliefs regarding runes and tarot in a later journal entry, I’ll stick to the basics of how I practice with them and incorporate them into my craft.

I start with a rune drawing. I draw a rune of the day and cast it, using my left hand to draw and right hand to cast as a tarot reader I spoke with as I was learning runes taught me that the left hand is the hand that receives energies while the right hand--or power hand--directs them. With my rune of the day drawn and cast, I write a journal entry about it in my rune journal. These entries consist of the meanings of the rune and how I think or intuit that they are relevant to my energies of the day. Sometimes, they tell me where I am on my spiritual path, and other times, they simply present themselves as the energy I’ll need to carry with me that day. With my journal entry done, I put the runestone in my left pocket so I can touch it throughout the day if I need to ground myself and attune my energy to the rune.

After my rune drawing, I do a daily tarot spread called the “Good Morning” spread. It’s a simple three-card spread that tells me the theme of the day, any good news about the day, and the highest energy of the day. I used to only draw one card as the “card of the day,” much like my “rune of the day” practice, but this often left me with more questions than answers as to how that card would relate or apply to the day ahead. With the three-card spread, I can orient myself to the themes and energies of the day without getting confused or frustrated. I also pay attention to cards that fall from the deck while I’m shuffling--I work these cards back into the deck in case they present themselves during the reading, but I always consider them regardless of whether they do or not. I work mainly with the Ethereal Visions tarot deck by Matt Hughes, which I bought at a local metaphysical bazaar, though I started with a beginner’s deck back in August.

Through these two drawings, I begin my day sort of grounded in my practice, and they often do help me throughout the day. More times than not, the runes and cards that I draw for the day are relevant to my situation, which definitely helps with my confidence in my craft, even if I’m not feeling spiritually “tuned in” that day. Tarot especially helped as a sort of pathway of stepping stones to ease me into witchcraft and paganism as I could easily see the results and start attuning myself to the energies of the day. Besides, tarot was mainstream enough that I didn’t feel like I was plunging into the deep end right off the bat by researching it and working with it, so it really helped me get the feel for different witchy and pagan practices. And, since tarot and runes help me stay sort of spiritually aligned, both practices have become absolutely central to my craft. On days when I don’t have the energy to do much spiritually, doing a simple ten-minute drawing and meditation is an easy way to keep myself involved and on track.

i’m really confused about the writing in supergirl?

and i’ve tried to google my confusion away, but it led me to places i didn’t intend to reach and tumblr searching is leading me to spoilers (which i don’t actually mind that much, but i’m here for meta answers that i don’t find).

mainly i’m just baffled by james olsen and all the romantic arcs.

i’m turning to tumblr’s fandom expertise for answers but i need you to understand my zero point ground before i ask any substantial q’s - i did not read any supergirl comics before (have read some dc in general and am a huge young justice fan, yes) so comparison to the source material means close to nothing for me. i generally don’t watch superhero related stuff. so why did i even start watching supergirl?

i’m just a Simple Gay™. yeah, i’ve been bombarded for the past year or so with supercop gifs and whatnot - and don’t get me wrong, i absolutely know i’m not going to get any gay content out of this show - but i have a bit of free time and thought i’d give this series a shot because it had wandered the realms of my mind for so long, thanks to tumblr supercop fanbase.

also regarding expectations - i did not expect this show to be a stellar example of top tier writing. i knew this is a light hearted, carefree show i’ll watch for simple fun, and that meets my expectations quite well. i’m not, per se, disappointed of the writing - not every damn piece of consumable media needs to be shakespearean poetry (and people who dismiss those things on the merit of that alone are missing so much, imo) - but it bothers me to the core when i recognize a poor written character being paraded on the plot lines. what i mean by that - a character that seems so meaningless still stands on a pedestal the creators of said character created for it. it’s like a curator putting up his son’s kindergarten crayon doodle on the fine arts exhibition - like, i get that you love your son, but my dude this is so out of place.

i’m 13 episodes in (more than half a season?) and i think this is really early to be frustrated with james olsen, given there are 3 seasons out, but i find myself not indifferent but annoyed with his character and how it affects this perplexed romantic hexagon arc. now, this is the time i worry the thought of ‘you’re only here for the gay’ to come up, so let me put up a disclaimer - the fact that i considered watching this show in the first place because of a non-existent gay ship doesn’t mean i don’t get to criticize an existent (and prominent, mind you) romantic arc. yes, i crave for lgbt content that is not complete crap in mainstream media, but there are so many written and showcased fictional couples i appreciate regardless the gender and\or sexual orientation of the characters involved. but it’s not ‘despite’, it’s because i’m a gay person who lives in a time of decent and even good lgbt romantic arcs representation that i find it very hard to be forgiving for poor written cis-het ones. it’s because lgbt people endured the years upon years of piss writing of lgbt characters in romantic arcs that were generally concluded with ‘this personality-less gay character 1′ and ‘this personality-less gay character 2′ should end up together on the merit of their dictated sexual orientation alone, that i find myself angry of lazy writing of cis-het ones that try to condition the viewer to ship two characters together because the script said they will touch hands and camera direction said to zoom on their face. this is not writing and properly developing a relationship between two characters this is directed instructions from the production down, as opposed to from the writing up.

after my supposed establishment of why i’m an Angry Lesbian™ about hetero ships writing i want to get to the nitty gritty - james olsen and the oh so many other problems with other characters.

i get characters crushing on each other, it’s got real cute potential, but can someone explain to me, enlighten me please - why do i get to live through cringe worthy anguished characters with a crush that doesn’t let me on anything other than ‘okay, i get that they’re attracted to each other’. what is their human connection based on and why the story didn’t bother showing me? because literally every scene he has with kara (that isn’t his given alone screen time or the professional ‘friends helping supergirl with mission’) is either him telling her about superman in the first episodes or him giving her this eyebrow-frown look while she talks. we know nothing about this character and his dialog doesn’t make him voluntarily informative about himself - how am i supposed to connect with him and understand that kara finds his personality endearing if i know zero facts about him as a human being? i know he’s a photographer and he knows superman. when lucy lane is introduced it’s because 1. she was there and he didn’t voluntarily let the viewers know who she is, and 2. she was there to serve the romantic weird entanglement and nothing more. what it did give us? some info about their brake up and life together - it is still nothing about james’ personality traits. i don’t want a sad back-story as much as i want a well rounded character in the present-story.

i was just brushing it off or groaning in frustration most of the time, but somewhere in the middle of season 1 (don’t remember exact episode) alex referred to james as kara’s family. that ticks so many tickey things in me - alex is her sister since she was 13, winn is her good friend for presumably all years she’s working at catco, and james arrived a week ago and suddenly he’s family because kara is crushing on him? no. no. no, story, you need to show me and explain to me in so much detail why a week-long crush is someone’s family along side an actual sister and a very good friend, you don’t tell me about it retrospectively.

and for the ever loving fuck why does he keep advancing on kara when he’s in a relationship with lucy? winn even acknowledges this verbally to his face (episode 12 i think) saying he can go get kara if he wanted to, that he just need to end things with lucy - yet he sees that as a sign to gather up the courage for romantic advancement right after the kara-adam brake up before talking with lucy? that’s a big nope.

and adam. oh, adam, sweet summer child. he really is just a harmless side character who crushes on kara, and she reciprocates, for about an episode and a half - and then comes the time in a superhero’s journey for ‘my identity is known and that puts people in my immediate surrounding in jeopardy’ - ... while she’s on a date with adam? don’t get me wrong, it’s all fine, but it’s just fine. why did this moment have to come when our main hero is in a barely second date relationship? the brake up literally meant nothing to me because we had no time to get to know adam. who is he? he was there to advance cat’s character, we didn’t learn anything about him in his screen time that wasn’t already told to us by cat. we know 1. what cat told kara (that was confirmed in his screen time), and 2. that he thinks kara is amazing. all he talks about is her, never himself. i know gurnisht about this character - why should i care about him when kara brakes things up?

and then we have *spooky voice* the friendzoned guy. first, can someone please make this phrase disappear from existence, yet second, while winn is written with some mistakes (using ‘friendzone’, kissing without confirming mutual feelings) - he is the most developed character of this disastrous romantic blah and he is written is such way that makes me care about him. kara doesn’t reciprocates his feelings? fine and valid, i just wish i could care about who she likes because they would be rounded developed characters as the ones she doesn’t.

in conclusion - please explain to me why should i ship a guy-character and a girl-character if their only connection is shared screen time and not the blessed character and relationship development a lot of lgbt ships get on mainstream media recently?

I used to write in journals and notebooks but since I’m a very Savvy gurl I think I want to keep my thoughts on this tumblr. Easier to control and hide, if need be.

Well, I found this thing that I wrote such a long time ago. It kills me that I didn’t write the date at the top of the paper but oh well. I like it because it still holds true to what I seek in a lover (attributes, etc). so I want to type it out and keep it here. It’s nice to have this reflection and at the very least it’s something to remember if I’m ever dating anybody. I think it’ll be good to keep me in line and to remember how important it is to me that my lover has these qualities:

I want someone who’s ambitious, independent (but likes to have me around), cute, warm-hearted, funny, sweet, loving, genuine, and who believes that Jesus is alive, He is God and Savior. If not a Christian then be willing to embrace my beliefs and walk with me in that journey. I don’t care about money as long as we have a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, a car to drive, and clothes to wear. But I’d like him to be smart money-wise and know how to make a living. 

Who has aspirations and is the type who dreams and then go gets it. No laziness. Never makes me feel less than, but included. Who introduces me to friends and family with ease, involving me and never hiding me. Who wants to have children relatively young and raise them with Christian values. 

Who likes to take trips or go on adventures and enjoys them regardless of how simple or extravagant. Enjoys finer things but also values simplicity, like I do. Who likes water and pools and when it rains. Someone who I could have fun with at the grocery store and in the car and anywhere we share company. Who is attentive and listens and remembers. Who is a snuggly boy always, who has good taste in music/likes concerts. Who would never make me feel small or diminished, who’s gaze I’d be comfortable under often. Someone who i’d feel comfortable around without makeup, like he accepted me no matter my appearance. Likes going to art/folk/food festivals, is of the environmentally conscious persuasion. Matches my humor. Dresses well, has his own style. Isn’t a cookie cutter fuckboy type of person (? I think this is mostly white boys but whatever I have to include it to be safe). Someone who is family oriented and values his family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Likes to travel, wants to travel. If he shared my appreciation of puggies it would be a plus. If I told him the names I like for future kids and he didn’t make fun of me, would also be a plus. Someone who has my back just like I want to have theirs. A personality that ebbs and flows just right with mine. A voice and mouth and fingers that can make my heart jump. Someone who’s company I’d never tire of, someone who makes me laugh really hard. Someone who’d never be embarrassed to hold my hand. 

Someone I can be goofy with and i won’t feel judged or criticized for it. Someone who liked to read would be cool, because I like that. we could read books together and talk about it. Is good at something (whether it be his job/career or a hobby). Someone i admire. Someone who is personable and warm and makes me feel comfortable and secure when i’m around him. 

Someone that i could forget to be “nervous” around. Basically i wouldn’t always feel like i had to be “on”, wouldn’t be worrying about whether my appearance was okay for him and i could relax and have fun. The type of person who is demonstrative in showing love and affection, not passive. It could be physically, but also emotionally. I want our bodies and souls to be completely intertwined sexually to the point where it’s pleasure and love and completeness when we fuck. Not just lust. But lust is still appreciated. But whatever I want to love his dick and kiss it often and claim it as all mine. I don’t know if I could handle a dick that’s too big, I just want a dick that fills me up to a nice amount and makes my eyes want to roll back and cherish it wholly. i think i’d like someone who is confident but also shy in some ways too. A nice counter balance. i want to be the person who offers him love and support and comfiness. i’d like to be his solace and him to be mine. i want to love how he smells and tastes and sounds and loving him will be my favorite thing to do. and i think that’s how i’d know he’s my one.

Do you sometimes worry about the influence you have on people's minds, given today's social climate, and the laziness of others? Do you get scared that people can bend, if they don't use their minds? Or do you not worry about that sort of thing because you feel like people should be responsible for their perception? How do you do this? How does shady do what she does?

I both think that people are responsible for their own perception and that I have a responsibility to present myself in a truthful way. Everything you ever read is colored by the perspective and the worldview of the author. Even something like Wikipedia with multiple authors will simply give you a truth based on the most prevalent worldview - or the publicly accepted worldview - at that point in time. Truth shifts with perspective. Critical thinking is something that develops. If you’re lucky you have people guiding you, if not, maybe you get burned before you get smart. That’s how we learn and it’s an evolving process for the rest of our lives. As a writer you cannot write for everyone. You can’t meet everyone at their level and you cannot choose your audience or what it uses your writing for. You can try to reach a specific audience, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be successful. If you publish anything on some level you have to accept that your words will be misunderstood, taken out of context and used to prove the opposite of what you’re trying to say. The alternative is silence.

I have a few things that I do that are ethical decisions connected to this. As I mentioned before, everything anyone ever writes is colored. What I try to do is to show you my goggles. Our goggles are made out of our social class, culture, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity… and just generally all of our life experiences. Imagine it as if I am wearing green goggles and I am describing you the world in green, because that’s how I see everything. What I try to do in order for people to read me critically is to pull back and also describe the frame of these green goggles from time to time on top of the reality I see. 

In practice, that means I will often use “I”-messages. “I think this…”, “I feel…”, “…at least that’s how I see it.”. It’s an invitation for people to be aware of subjectivity. It’s encouragement to ‘do as I do’ and not ‘as I say’. Analyze, think, feel for yourself. Sometimes I’ll include anecdotes and personal experiences, which serves to inform, but it also shows emotional involvement that again, might color my perspective. It’s something I consciously include. 

Dumb positivity is another way to be more objective. They are another description of the goggles. It means ‘in this post I am specifically looking at the queer subtext and the queer reading’. In every other case where the subtext in a tv show doesn’t specifically relate to homosexuality we could be sure that foreshadowing is really foreshadowing and that symbolism will become meaningful in text. The only reason we can’t be sure in the case of Once Upon a Time is because at some point in history queer subtext was divorced from main text to tell secret stories, cause it was the only thing we were allowed. Every story has subtext, it’s a general storytelling tool. We live in a strange time where it could be either. We’re starting to see more queer stories told openly and at the same time this historical storytelling device lives on and is still being used. Dumb positivity is about not having to repeat this awareness of history in every post. It’s about not reminding or focusing on the reason why we got here in the first place - discrimination and homophobia - but on the validity of our stories regardless of how they are told.

The other choice I make is to try and never shame people or be disrespectful toward people who have different opinions. Making people feel ashamed - for example by calling them stupid or naive - causes people to stop focusing on what is being said. Instead they will be digging in their personal history to defend who they are. Or they will stop talking to you or to anyone, but they won’t change their minds. I know when I am personally under attack the first reflex is emotional, it’s about self protection, so why would that be different for others? It seems counter-productive if what you’re after is a meaningful exchange of perspective.

Similarly, even if I get very negative messages I will still try and look at what they are saying and wonder if there is truth there, wonder if they have a point. I seek out other parts of the fandom and try to understand their point of view. I won’t always publicly address this, but it’s something I use to check myself. I try to face my shadow. Of course it is nice to be read, to get feedback, to have people ask you questions. To be po-pu-la-a-ar. Of course there is ego involved. I think the only thing you can do is to be aware of this and to try and correct yourself if you find out if it interferes with your being truthful.

Last but not least, I do take into account the context of where I am writing. Say I would have arrived in this fandom and I hadn’t seen anyone mentioning the possibility of queer baiting or criticize the problematic aspects of the show… I probably would have. Right now there is plenty of criticism and everyone is aware of the possibility of queer baiting. The information is there and I can’t imagine people who have been around for a while haven’t been exposed to all the different views and they are choosing what resonates with them. So it’s also a matter of this blog not happening in a vacuum.

The part that seems to confuse people most about my blog - or where some seem to think I’m lying for popularity or attention - is that I genuinely believe it is more likely than not that they’ll make the romantic subtext between Emma & Regina text eventually. I think anyone who has read, engaged with and understood OperationOUT completely, understands where I am coming from. However, many people are angry about the show - for good reason - so I am not actively going to invite people to invest their time and energy in reading about a show they hate just so they can understand me. What I can’t do is lie about my perceptions of the show just because it’s somehow perceived less shameful to be wrong when you were being cynical. I think I’d rather be fearless, truthful and wrong then.
