So many times in my career I wish someone would have told me the real truth. I have, of course, had wonderful mentors and coaches throughout the years, but no one really broke down the unspoken rules, the real facts about ascending in your career and leadership.
I recently participated on a Phoenix Business Journal leadership panel and was asked to offer advise for the emerging leaders in the audience, and while I already had this column in mind before the event, it helped validate a notion I’ve been mulling over for awhile: Young professionals hunger for insight and feedback on how to advance or level-up in their careers.
That in mind, I would like to share five perhaps controversial leadership lessons every aspiring professional should know, taken from my personal experience and through conversations with a diverse set of leaders nationwide.
Your actual job (and No. 1 priority) should be making your manager’s job easier Individuals who are quickly promoted understand that if they make their manager look good, they will themselves reap the benefits. Now, this isn’t a nod to participate in anything superficial or borderline abusive but rather encouragement to anticipate the needs of your boss and company and deliver accordingly. Deeply understanding the overall roadmap no matter what your position in the company will give you a mindset to drive outcomes even if they don’t seem directly tied to you, allowing you to be open to the concept of being fiercely committed to moving your boss’ agenda forward.
You are going to receive many requests from your supervisor to do something that may seem like a waste of time, but they are asking for a reason. Understand that reason and then do it well. Think about things before your manager does, and if you figure things out with their minimal input, you can free up time for them to go farther, faster. And so will you. That’s true leadership. If there’s one thing to remember, it’s this: if your manager doesn’t feel like you are adding value and directly helping them achieve company goals and initiatives, you are eventually mapping out your own exit plan.

It'll Be Fun
Notes: This is the first post of the Nathan Bateman Choose Your Own Adventure for the Youvebeenlivingfictional 5k Follower Celebration! Just a heads up about a couple of things:
All CYOA paths are complete. If you hit the gif that says it's the end, it means that it's the end.
There is one (1) spicy chapter within one of the paths. If you cannot see the chapter, you need to update your content settings. Find the instructions to do that here.
This is not beta-read. As always.

Warnings: Cursing; angst; fluff
Summary: You’ve heard stories about how Bateman…Operates. You’ve only met him in person once, shortly after you’d been hired as Chief Knowledge Officer. It had been brief, perfunctory: Hi, how are you, happy to be here, love it, thanks for the money, enjoy your plane and helicopter ride back to your fucking remote, subterranean, in-fucking-sane facility you billionaire hermit whackadoo—
Tumblr media
You had an idea of what this would be like, of course, but the reality is…Absolutely insane. You’re tired, you’re sweaty, and you are so, so happy that you fucking packed light. You shift your bag on your shoulder, glancing around. Follow the river. Follow the fucking river? You’re not a goddamn girl scout. You pull in a deep breath, then let out a relieved sigh as you finally spot the house…Up a rather steep incline. Son of a bitch.
You puff out an irritated breath as you bend forward a touch, resting your hands on your knees.
“Ohhhkay. Okay,” You mutter, straightening. Fuck, you hate team building. Hell, you hate it even more when it’s in such limited quantities of people—this way, there's nowhere to hide, you're easily missed. It’s barely half the C-suite: just you, Bateman, the CFO and the CMO.
It’ll be fun.
Bateman had slurred that across the phone on a status nearly two months ago. It’ll be fun.
The CFO and CMO had signed on enthusiastically; you’d been a little more hesitant to speak up, but had reluctantly agreed—and been met by an cheery, Yeaaah! from Bateman. Maybe that should’ve spurred you to be just a touch more excited, but you’ve heard stories about how Bateman…Operates.
Beyond that, you’ve hardly interacted with him outside of meetings, briefings, emails, what have you. You do a good job. You get your shit done. He doesn’t call you out because you've never given him a reason to.
You huff softly as you begin a long hike up the fairly steep incline. Alright. Pace yourself. No need to fuck your knees or ankles or anything up right before you meet your boss—
You wince as your foot slips, your knee skimming against a sharp rock. You groan, looking down and eyeing the throbbing spot. It hasn’t torn your leggings, but you’re willing to bet the skin’s a little torn under there. Damnit. You push on, righting your footing. Come on. Arrive in one piece. You don’t want the fricking sun to go down before you get there, and you really don’t want them to have to come looking for you.
(Though if you’re being honest, you’re not sure that Bateman would go out of his way to send out the search party. You can see the article on Wired now—BlueBook Chief Knowledge Officer Gets Eaten By Bear On the Way to Corporate Weekend Retreat. Said Bateman, “She knew she’d have a hike through challenging terrain. She should’ve brought her bear repellent. Frankly, we can’t tolerate that kind of narrow-minded unpreparedness at BlueBook. We’re already looking to hire her replacement. Our front-runner has climbed Everest.”)
You snort to yourself at the thought. You can practically hear Bateman saying it—with that damnable smug curl to his lips; you can see his hand drawing out of his pocket to adjust his glasses; to pass his hand over his closely shaved head, his palm loosing a rasping little shush against his cropped hair; his shoulder shrugging dismissively before he impatiently waves the reporter on to their next question. Oh, yeah, you wouldn’t put it past him. You’re only useful to Nathan as long as you suit his needs. You’re certain that if your visions for the company didn’t align with his, if you didn’t fall in line with what he wants for BlueBook, he’d drop you without a second thought.
It would only be right, of course. It’s his company, not yours.
You come to another stop once you reach the top of the hill, bracing your hands on your lower back and giving it a bit of a stretch. Fuck. You need a shower. A long, hot shower. You straighten up, and are set to go full steam ahead to Bateman’s when you hear your name called. You go still, dread trickling into your chest, your eyes squeezing shut. Maybe you can pretend you didn’t hear him?
But you’re not on some crowded city street, or office hall, and you’ve stilled for too long. You turn, slapping on a smile at the sight of the CFO, William Ellis, at the bottom of the steep hill. You force a smile, raising a hand to wave. You’re fully intent on turning back around and heading toward the house, but he calls out, “Mind giving me a hand with my bags?”
Yes, you do mind. You’re not a fucking bellhop. You don’t want to help him with his bags—you don’t even want to be here. You want to stomp back to that field and camp out until that helicopter comes back to take you home.
Instead, you turn around, measuring and bracing your steps as you trudge back down the hill.
--
“Damn good luck running into you.”
It's the third time he says it, though he’s run out of breath more and more as he did. Ellis is a short, stout Englishman. His typically fair, clear skin is ruddy and red from exertion. It probably doesn’t help that his voice seems to come from his nose, and is pushed out of the narrow purse of his lips with his rarefied Oxbridge snobbishness. “Sure,” Is all you offer now. The first time, you’d said Isn’t it; the second, you’d chuckled lightly, offered, Guess so. Maybe if your responses become monosyllabic, he wouldn’t bother. You shift your bag on your shoulder, moving Ellis’ duffle bag from one hand to the other as you deftly avoided the rock that you’d slipped on before.
“Nice of Bateman to have us along,” He adds.
“Yep.”
“Don’t get to see much of the old sport these days.”
The Old Sport. Christ. This man is one off-white jacket, gin rickey, and Dead Man’s float away from being an F. Scott Fitzgerald character.
“Well, that’ll happen,” Is all you offered in turn. You fight the urge to drop William’s duffel on the doorstep as you approached the house. Instead, you still, watching William approach and draw his phone out to check the instructions.
“Now let’s see…” He mutters. “The instructions did say that the…Keycard pad was around here…Somewhere…”
“William Ellis.”
You glance over as a robotic voice draws your attention to a keypad.  It's just another moment before it instructs:
“Please approach the console and face the screen.”
William wanders closer, eyes still set on his phone. You bite your lip, choking down a laugh as a light flashes, taking a picture of the top of William’s head.
“Take your keycard.”
You step closer as William took his, and the same robotic voice said your name. You step in front of the camera, forcing your face into a neutral expression.
“You ought to smile a bit,” William chuckles. You tighten your hands on the straps of his duffel as irritation pulses through you. You have half a mind to drop this duffel bag right on his foot—knowing full well that his work and personal laptops are in here. Instead, you reach out, taking the card from the slot.
“You may now enter the residence.”
William doesn’t hold the door open for you. He doesn’t even gesture for you to be the first one in. You’ve already had enough of this man’s shit—and you haven’t even seen Bateman, or the CMO. You don’t want to see them in this state anyway. The CMO, Dan Marshall, is one of your better workplace friends. And Bateman—well. Either way, you’re not sure you’re ready to see him yet, for all of the hell he’s already put you through with this little hike.
“So? Shall we?” William nods down the hall.
Shall you?
Go With William to Find Nathan and Dan

Even if there is no trick, there is still a trick to make Japan’s e-commerce app with the second largest increase in downloads in 2023
Tumblr media
In December, Sensor Tower released the "Insights on New Forces in Global E-commerce Application Growth in 2023" report, which  HE Tuber  calculated the growth performance of e-commerce applications in major markets around the world from January to November 2023. This article will analyze the most popular overseas e-commerce apps in 2023, let’s take a look.
Temu, SHEIN and AliExpress are undoubtedly the most popular overseas e-commerce apps in 2023. These three apps occupy the top download lists and download growth lists in multiple markets. Some apps also perform well in some markets, such as Trendyol in the Middle East and TikTok Shop Seller Center in Southeast Asia. The most eye-catching overseas platform is 7sGood, which ranked second in the download growth list in the Japanese market.
Source: Sensor Tower
1. 7sGood, another practice of the no-recruitment entrepreneurial concept
The developer account of 7sGood is HHO Limited, a startup company founded in 2021 by former Alibaba Vice President and DingTalk CEO Wu Zhao (Chen Hang).
In 2020, Alibaba will fully integrate DingTalk with Alibaba Cloud, and DingTalk will enter a new stage of development. Wu Zhao, the original leader of DingTalk, will also be transferred to the group, and there will be other appointments. This also contributed to the idea of leaving home to start a business without a job.
In July 2021, Wu Zhao co-founded HHO with old colleagues such as the original CMO and CTO of DingTalk, hoping to realize the digitization of products and businesses in various industries through the digital capabilities accumulated in DingTalk. It sounds like what Wuzhao wants to do is toB, but when it comes to landing, Wuzhao first launches the toC brand to prototype its own concept.
In September 2021, HHO first launched the light-emitting headphone brand HHOGene. Users can control the lighting through customized shells and apps to personalize the appearance of the headphones. Two months later, in November, another HHO brand, HHOLove, was also launched. This is a smart pet hardware brand that already covers smart cat companion robots, smart cat litter boxes, and smart feeders. These products are also All can be controlled remotely through HHOLove's App.
Just when I was planning to simply use the "software + hardware" model to understand HHO's concept of enabling products to achieve full-link digitalization, in March 2022, Wuzhao launched his third project, 7sGood, an e-commerce platform. My understanding is still narrow.
Just looking at the business model, 7sGood is indeed the most special existence among several HHO projects, so how does it embody HHO's digital concept?
It is known that 7sGood is only available in the Japanese market. Compared with general e-commerce platforms, 7sGood has one biggest difference - a shopping platform based on short videos, but it is not an e-commerce TikTok, but also adds short videos. Video Amazon. TikTok first established a short video ecosystem and then developed e-commerce business. Existing shopping platforms that make short videos also provide users with an additional way to discover new products. This is related to the time when each company was established. But 7sGood gives us the feeling that it is a platform that allows users to shop through short videos.
Before shopping, users browse short videos to discover products. At the same time, they can view short videos of the quality inspection team trying out the products. After placing an order, users can also view short videos of product packaging. On 7sGood, short videos are used to discover and promote purchase decisions before sales, and to track products after sales.
Another thing I can talk about is the C2M model. The factory sells directly to consumers. Merchants have no inventory and no "middlemen make the difference". The product price may be lower than other e-commerce purchase channels. This may have been relatively new in the past two years, but in the past two years it has almost become mainstream in the context of the global economic downturn.
Among them, "factories directly to consumers" can be regarded as an indication of 7sGood's practice in digitalization, but 7sGood's own propaganda is nothing more than using data to guide factories to minimize inventory and consumers' expectations for product quality and design. Feedback and needs go directly to producers, making their product iterations more efficient and accurate. (Everyone is working hard on the first point. Whether 7sGood can do the second point will only wait for the test of time. However, it should be said that Japanese users like to give opinions and are picky. Maybe they are more suitable to cooperate with 7sGood to do this. things)
After observing 7sGood, it is not difficult to understand why it can grow rapidly in the Japanese market.
First of all, Japan is relatively closed. It is as fast as Temu, and it has to be relatively slow to enter the market (please refer to our two previous articles ""Quality Control Crazy" Japan, Is Really Addicted to Temu?", "As tough as Temu, but also Are you trying to crack down on the hard nut of Japan?") It will take some time for Japan's market structure to take shape.
Secondly, it is well known that Japan is lagging behind in the mobile Internet. The trend of digital transformation has just begun in the past two years. It is a good time to bring domestic digital technology and experience to Japan, which has just started digital transformation. Furthermore, Wuzhao has an accurate grasp of Japanese users. Japanese users are very budget-conscious and find it difficult to form trusting relationships with strangers and platforms. C2M and short videos solve these two problems respectively.
In June this year, 7sGood held its first offline pop-up event in Tenjin, Fukuoka City, Japan. Wu Zhao made it more clear when he was interviewed by a local Japanese reporter there. 7sGood’s current products mainly come from China, but later The goal is to allow local Japanese business owners to sell products on the platform. HHO can bring China's digital development experience to Japan, so that products and niche handicraft merchants in rural areas of Japan can expand their sales scope and simplify their manufacturing processes.
It seems that the main reason why 7sGood can stand up is to use the time machine theory. For domestic practitioners, it may not be innovative enough. However, after experiencing the App, I found that on the consumer side, 7sGood still has many ways to play. It's worth taking it out and talking about it.
2. The price is clearly marked, your 7 seconds of attention = 1 yen, do you want to exchange it?
My biggest feeling after using 7sGood for several days is that the gameplay of the app is very Chinese, but the way of expression is very Japanese.
7sGood has a wide range of products for sale, but it can still be clearly seen that it provides more products in the categories of household products, fashion and beauty products, pet products, and vehicle-mounted outdoor products. The SKU also shows a certain degree of scarcity, and the price is indeed as advertised and not too high.
The author tried to search for similar models on 7sGood on Temu and SHEIN. In contrast, it is not easy to find the same model in the beauty category, but you can find products with similar materials or pictures in categories such as small household appliances and household items. In terms of price, none of the three platforms has an absolute advantage in price.
For example, a lazy mini mop has the lowest price on Temu, and a cute style plush sofa blanket has the lowest price on 7sGood. Overall, 7sGood's positioning is similar to Temu and SHEIN. They are both e-commerce platforms for low-price goods. It seems to want to differentiate itself in the market through unique product selection.
The price of the same lazy mini mop + 2 brush heads from 7sGood (top), Temu (middle) and SHEIN (bottom) (the price shown by SHEIN does not include brush heads)
7sGood (top), Temu (middle) and SHEIN (bottom)
The price of the same plush sofa blanket, pink, 180*200 cm (the price shown by SHEIN is for the smaller size). If there is no obvious difference in the overall price positioning, 7sGood’s eye-catching strategy is to amplify its own characteristics. In the short video The first-level tags for shopping make a fuss (the App has a total of 4 first-level tags, and the other 3 correspond to the shelf mall, shopping cart and personal information):
1. Quantify user attention
When each short video automatically plays, an automatic countdown of 7 seconds will be displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. Users will get one point if they stay in the same video for 7 seconds. After the 7-second countdown ends, the previous countdown position will show how many points the user has accumulated by watching short videos so far.
This is a point redemption mechanism set up by 7sGood. Staying on the same video for 7 seconds is equal to one point, and one point is approximately equal to 1 yen. Users can choose the products they want from the product exchange pool, pay 99 yen themselves, and use points to redeem the remaining price difference. Watching videos is the most stable source of points. After clicking on the gameplay introduction, you will find that you can also get a fixed number of points by checking in every day, binding your LINE account, binding your email, and sharing videos.
When consumers actually get the wool, they have already paid the corresponding cost. The cost here includes not only the 99 yen paid, but also staying longer in the app, leaving more personal information, or forwarding a certain message to 10 friends.
After so many years of "baptism" with routines, everyone is familiar with these things and is cautious and resistant in most cases. 7sGood’s strategy is to clearly mark the price. For example, it uses a countdown to indicate that the price is the user’s time, rather than like some domestic products that continuously consume users’ time through automatically playing videos. In the end, the rewards of cashback and free orders are still only a probability. .
Japanese consumers seem to be paying for this method of quantifying time. According to Diandian data, the per capita usage time of 7sGood active users' Apps is basically greater than the average per capita usage time of shopping apps.
Source: Diandian Data
In fact, if you look at Japanese lists and observe their daily habits, you will find that exchanging time for money is very easy for Japanese users. Typical examples include cash-back apps for walking, puzzle cash-back games, etc. There are even manufacturers specializing in such products in Japan. Japanese users are very attracted to this kind of "wool-picking" gameplay.

i've decided i'm gonna apply my delusional mind to applying for remote jobs because if these companies want to say you need to be a CMO level expert for a $24 / hour position I can apply to be a senior marketing analyst even though i don't know what the fuck a KPI is

Find: Top Remote Companies
Headquartered across 11 countries, the companies on the Top 100 Companies to Watch for Remote Jobs in 2021 had the highest number of remote job openings in 2020.
For years, translation and localization company Lionbridge has maintained a remote workforce, with employees operating from 5,000 cities around the globe. But with more than 95% of its staff now working remotely as a result of the pandemic, many of its long-time telecommuters finally feel they are on a level playing field.
“At some other companies, the people not [working] in the office always feel like they are at somewhat of a disadvantage,” says Lionbridge CMO Jaime Punishill. “My team dynamics are better than they were a year ago because nobody feels different.” Lionbridge’s existing work-from-home infrastructure enabled it to successfully pivot to a remote environment when the pandemic began.
The job-search site based its ranking on an analysis of 57,000 companies’ remote-job postings in FlexJobs’ database during 2020. Those companies with the most remote-job openings made the final list.
“There is a maturity in a business that can trust employees that are not physically present,” says Ann Lazarus-Barnes, chief people officer at Lionbridge. “There’s a very talented group of people that do best in a remote environment. We welcome this whole talent pool that other organizations may not be able to.”
Customer experience tech company TTEC took the second spot on the list, followed by cloud call center service LiveOps. The organizations ranked are headquartered in 11 countries, including the Netherlands, Sweden and Australia.
While the pandemic has popularized remote work, it hasn’t affected this year’s list that much, says Brie Reynolds, a career development manager at FlexJobs. Eleven companies, including Dell Technologies (No. 41), CVS Health (No. 28) and Salesforce (No. 25), have been featured on the list since 2014.
“It’s interesting because the list, over the years, has reflected the leaders in remote work, the companies who do it really well and do it often,” she says. “If anything, the pandemic has strengthened those companies’ commitment to remote work. It’s really shown them to be the leaders in this area.” However, newcomers, such as Pfizer (No. 96) and Supporting Strategies (No. 17), who’ve earned spots on the list after posting a great deal of remote positions in recent months, demonstrate that the remote-work trend is not just a “flash in the pan,” Reynolds says.
Like last year, the top fields hiring for remote jobs in 2020 were computer/information technology, medical/health and project management. Marketing, administrative and human resources and recruiting were some of the fast-growing categories for remote work, each having increased 25% from March to December 2020. As companies decide whether to make the switch to telecommuting permanent, they should consider the benefits, Reynolds says.
Remote work allows companies to hire from a more diverse pool of candidates, while also saving money on office space and supplies. In turn, employees may be able to have a better work-life balance, as well as reduced stress, among other health benefits. “I hope companies stick with it so they get to experience the additional benefits without the added stressor of the pandemic,” she says.

You’re at least 10 years along in your desired profession, considered an expert in your field, won awards and garnered praise from your cohorts, grown your career accepting new positions and challenges along the way. Now it’s time to take the next step to the VP ranks or C-Suite and seek out elite, exhilarating executive jobs.
As we all know, not all paths are direct, often they meander. But there are a few proven steps you can take to land those illusive executive jobs with great pay and benefits. Consider the following:
Establish your personal brand, narrative Do this now, before you start looking for your ideal executive positions. This is a multi-layered dynamic that entails both your professional experience and personal passions, volunteer work, family life. It’s a balancing act that combines your leadership and executive skills with warmth and compassion for the world around you.
Ask yourself a few key questions: – How would I describe my career path or arch as a 30-second elevator pitch? – How would I tell a longer version with personal anecdotes sprinkled in – birth of your first child, continuing education, milestones, etc.? – How do I give back to my community? How does it align with my career? – How can I combine all of these elements in an executive bio? How does that read?

A Well Built Ship (Captain) (Jim Kirk xDarcy Lewis)
Tumblr media
Jim x Darcy
Life in the 23rd century wasn’t too bad, if somewhat strange, Darcy reflected frequently. Technology was vastly improved, there were no money issues, medical knowledge was leaps and bounds better and many societal barriers no longer existed.
It had taken them awhile to adjust to their new reality, but in the end, the four of them who’d made the time jump had started to blend in and thrive. Darcy, Sam, And Bucky had all joined Starfleet in various capacities and Jane was currently sciencing in Space on a research mission. Darcy herself was stationed on the Starbase Yorktown, undergoing some intensive cultural studies to aid her in her diplomatic jobs. She eventually hoped to get a posting on a ship and explore strange new worlds with the rest of them, but for now, she was working on situations such as how to tell when a Tellarite was seriously angry or just complimenting someone. (It could be hard to tell, given how they loved arguing). [[MORE]]
She was meandering along the beautiful walkway, (seriously, the architecture and design were mind-blowing!), when an approaching ship caught her eye.
“Is that what I think it is?” She exclaimed to herself, seeing NCC-1701 emblazoned boldly across the saucer. It was.
“Wow. The USS Enterprise,” she breathed, wondering why no one else seemed remotely excited by the appearance of the famed ship. Sure, ships arriving was a regular occurrence, but the Enterprise had never yet graced them with her regal presence.
“Oh, baby, you are gorgeous,” she muttered, reluctantly tearing her eyes off of the Enterprise. She’d have to hold off her admirations for later, or she’d be late for her next lecture. Turning on her heels, she marched off, plotting how she could get herself an up close visit to the flagship of Starfleet.
Several hours later, Darcy watched as the last stragglers from the Enterprise emerged into Yorktown’s main hub. She scanned the crew to see if their were any potential information sources, but most looked very intent on a goal or were busy in conversation or happy reunions. “Hmm, this could be harder than I thought,” she pondered. “Dang long winded ambassadors!”
Her eyes suddenly fell on a lone gold shirted man standing alone, apart from everyone else, watching the commotion and joy. He had a downright wistful look on his face that tugged on her heart. Ah. Target sighted.
She strode toward him, noting his striking good looks the closer he got. Then she saw his rank stripes and almost stopped.
She was walking right up to a Captain to ask to see his ship! Was she crazy? Maybe, but what did she have to lose? Couldn’t hurt to strike up a friendly conversation. The man looked lonely, after all.
“You look a little lost, Captain? New here?” She asked in a light, slight teasing tone.
“You could say that.” His voice was soft and deep and vivid blue eyes focused on her as he spoke. Darcy’s own eyes widened. Holy crap, the man was gorgeous. She’d seen holo pics of the famous James T. Kirk, but none of them had done him justice. Gulping slightly, she smiled at him in a hospitable manner.
“Well, welcome to the Yorktown, Sir,” she greeted. “I can point you to the nearest kiosk, if you like. I also am an expert on the best cafes and watering holes around here.”
She stopped herself and blushed at her annoying tendency to have her mouth run away from her brain. The last thing she wanted was for him to think she was hitting on him. (Well, Maybe not the LAST thing.)
Captain Kirk smiled at her. “I appreciate that, Lieutenant. This place is a maze to me right now. It’s a but overwhelming after being out in the Black for so long.”
“I would imagine so,” Darcy agreed, trying to restrain her inner fangirl from getting out and betraying her. “Professional. Remain professional. You can do this,” she told herself.
“The nearest directory kiosk is just down that way about fifty meters,” she pointed out to him, indicating the direction with her finger.
“Thanks, Lieutenant....”
“Lewis. Darcy Lewis,” she replied, willingly shaking his hand, perhaps a second too long.
“Jim Kirk,” the captain responded. “Nice to meet you. Are you stationed here?”
“For now,” she answered. “But I’m going to apply for a posting on a Starship once I’ve finished my studies here. Wanna-be diplomats have a lot to master before we’re let loose on the universe.”
“Diplomacy, huh? A much needed skill these days. Goodness knows, I somewhat lack in that area myself.”
Jim grinned a self-deprecating smile and Darcy’s stomach flipped even as she giggled at him. It was no wonder Kirk could charm anyone. One look at those dimples and she’d follow him to the edge of the universe.
“Oh, I’ve heard the stories, Captain,” she assured him. Kirk had a history of getting himself shot at or punched, and even though said incidents had decreased lately, the reputation stuck.
“Of course you have,” he sighed. “Let me assure you, most of them are greatly exaggerated.”
“Really? I wonder if your CMO would agree,” she said with a smirk.
Jim snorted and rubbed his forehead sheepishly.
“Bones gets stressed over a paper cut, so no.”
The wistful look returned to his face and she followed Kirk’s gaze to a cute couple enthusiastically embracing, a small toddler clinging onto her father’s legs.
“Awww. They look happy,” she observed.
“Yep,” he sighed. “They needed this. These deep space missions can be really hard on a crew, especially those with families.”
Darcy nodded. She couldn’t imagine being away from loved ones that long. Good thing she was currently unattached. She wouldn’t be leaving anyone behind to worry about her. On the flip side, their was no one to come home to, which probably explained Kirk’s sad looks.
“I take it you don’t have family nearby?”
“My mom’s in the black and my brother is off planet. Hope you’ve got better luck.”
“Not really,” Darcy shrugged, unable to even begin to explain her time travel and that all her family was likely dead. “But I have a couple of good friends around who are like brothers, so that helps. How long will the Enterprise be here?”
“Don’t know. I’ll find that out once I’ve met with Commodore Paris.” He glanced at the time unit on a nearby screen. “Speaking of which, I need to check in with her. I should probably head over towards the important looking buildings.”
“Of course,” Darcy replied with a smile, trying to think of a way to see him again. Before she could, Jim’s eyes were back on hers.
“Hey, Maybe if you’ve got time in the next couple of days, you could show me one of those great dining spots you mentioned?”
His tone was nothing but friendly, yet with a touch of hope to it that encouraged Darcy.
“I’d be happy to, Captain,” she replied slyly, “On one condition.”
His eyebrow rose.
“What’s That?”
“You give me a tour of your beautiful lady ship,” she decreed boldly. “The Enterprise is incomparable and I have a mighty need for a close up view.” (Of that ass!) Her wicked brain added, all too aware of the fact the Captain was as well built as his ship.
The Captain looked at her with downright awe and decided interest now.
“Wow. Someone who appreciates her. It’s a deal.”
He stuck out his hand again with a wide grin. “Call me Jim.”
Matching his grin with one of her own, Darcy shook it. “And you can call me Darcy. When can we meet?”

Those who have reached the upper echelon of the corporate world know that the C-suite level has its well-deserved perks. But if you are looking to make a move – either lateral or vertical – the process can be overwhelming, even for the most experienced executives, which is where a recruiter can help.
With more than 3.4 million C-level executives currently employed in the United States, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an executive recruiter who is at ease navigating these crowded waters may be what you need.
If you’re on the fence about enlisting the assistance of an executive recruiter, here are reasons that could convince you to take the leap.
The Benefits An experienced recruiter comes with a network and relationships in the industry at that lofty level. A recruiter who has been a practitioner in that space brings even more to the table, like Matt Eberle, owner of Biltmore Executive Group, an executive recruiting firm that specializes in C-suite positions in accounting, finance and technology industries.
“It’s going to be someone who can naturally talk to C-level people because they have been immersed in the executive skills arena for some time,” says Eberle. “Having that experience has separated me from someone who’s not an accountant or finance professional.”
Making a Match Eberle and his team do resume revisions and keep up with industry trends. However, the ability to offer career advice at a deep level is also a crucial tool in an executive recruiter’s arsenal.
If daily in-person collaborations with large teams or racking up frequent flyer miles aren’t your thing, a recruiter will make sure any interview you do will never be with a company requiring those commitments, or even raise them to you in an interview when you may be vulnerable.
Also, when a firm seeks candidates with experience in specific software or with a certain system and you have it, the recruiter will put your resume front and center.
