From the Slang Dictionary
Brainrot - (sometimes spelled brain rot) used to describe the effects of being “perpetually online” and consuming large amounts of low-value internet content. The term, which can be used as both a noun and verb, is also used to describe an intense and often obsessive preoccupation with a particular topic, such as a TV show, movie, fandom, or idea. People experiencing brainrot often find themselves mindlessly scrolling through never-ending social media content.
Delulu - a slang shortening of the word delusional. It is especially used to describe superfans or dating partners who display odd or extreme behavior. Frequently, delulu is used in jokes, memes, hyperbole, or lighthearted mockery, especially in memes and social media videos depicting people acting bizarrely or obsessively.
Girl grip - holding multiple items in one hand by grasping them between fingers. Typically, the phrase refers to a person using a clawed hand to hold multiple items at once. For example, a person may hold a paper cup using primarily their thumb and pointer finger while holding a smartphone, keys, receipt, and wallet with their remaining fingers on the same hand.
Goblin mode - a way of behaving that intentionally and shamelessly gives in to and indulges in base habits and activities without regard for adhering to social norms or expectations. The phrase is typically used to be at least somewhat humorous and is commonly applied to oneself as a way of embracing such behavior. It is often considered the opposite of and a reaction to the kinds of healthy, organized, productive habits and lifestyles that are commonly presented (and glorified) in highly curated social media content. It is also sometimes used in reference to people and animals who suddenly become “wild.”
Nepo friend - a person who is thought to benefit from having a famous or influential friend. It is often used to imply that someone is only famous or successful because of their association with a famous person. The term may be used playfully, but it is often at least mildly negative.
Out of pocket - a phrase with three different common meanings. It can refer to a person having to pay money themselves, a person being unreachable, or a person acting unnaturally or in a wild, inappropriate way.
Side character energy - a characteristic that describes how a person sees themselves and their attitude toward life. Side character energy is typically associated with people who are funny, content, and self-assured or who don’t seek to be the center of attention. It is often seen as a counterpart to main character energy or main character syndrome.
Situationship - a romantic or sexual relationship that is undefined and noncommittal. People in a situationship are more than friends but less than committed romantic partners. It can often vary in what happens within it. It could involve casual sex, romance, dating people, spontaneous meetings, a lack of plans, a lack of emotional connection, or possibly all or none of these things.
Unalive - a slang term used on social media as a replacement for the verb kill or other death-related terms, often in the context of suicide. It is typically used as a way of circumventing social media platform rules that prohibit, remove, censor, or demonetize content that explicitly mentions killing or suicide. The term is used both seriously (such as in discussion of suicide prevention and awareness) and in nonserious posts and memes (such as saying My mom is going to unalive me if I don’t clean my room).
Yassification - the act of making something better, especially more visually appealing. Specifically, it is often used to refer to an internet meme in which pictures of people are edited using photo editing software or beauty filters to resemble an exaggerated, hyperfeminine version of a woman adhering to stereotypical beauty standards.

We Need to Talk About AI Detectors
Over the past few weeks there have been two posts in particular that have come out against two authors in the community that have resulted in near witch hunts for one, and essentially driving the other off the internet from all the bullying and hate received. These posts were related to the potential use of AI in fanfiction, as well as using supposed “AI Detectors” to support their claims. With the help of friends, we have been able to look into the AI claims that were made against both The Silence and The Song and Ir Abelas, Da’ean.
We were curious about how and why these posts were being flagged with high levels of “AI Probability” when the authors have been adamant (either in chats or in public) that they have never used generative AI for their work. So we did the most logical thing, put on our detective caps, and rolled up our sleeves. We would like to note that we do not wish to have philosophical discussions, we wish to have transparency and honesty.
Spoilers: We found inaccuracies almost IMMEDIATELY.
Firstly, we looked into the weakness of AI detectors, and read through online posts where people voiced their frustrations with detectors. One thing that we noticed was that the common denominator was that well written articles were being flagged as “Likely AI”, particularly with Originality, and that the solution was to either “dumb them down” or to remove punctuation such as commas, which immediately improved the score, tipping the scale to “Likely Original”.
For the second step, we ran some of our own works through Originality AI checker–works that were made prior to the creation of AI and generative AI. However, after punctuation was removed, this magically changed from 50% likelihood of AI to 100% original work. Again, these works were from before the dawn of generative AI, and therefore could not have been created by AI. For fun, we even ran the first chapter of Harry Potter through it–a novel that is objectively without AI, which still did not come out with results stating 100% original work. We then removed almost all of the punctuation from it, and it actually improved the originality score by 3% (from 95% to 98%).
Personal fic, before and after:
Next step, we ran our own scans through Originality and Quillbot. This includes full chapters of Ir Abelas, Da’ean, both with and without punctuation in Originality, and excerpts in Quillbot. Interestingly, the excerpts in Quillbot pinged as “0% likely AI”, and that is without any removal of punctuation. Across the board, the removal of punctuation from the chapters caused an immediate and dramatic increase in the score, from “100% likely AI” to “96% likely Original”. We have found that the more grammatically correct a work was, the more likely it was to be flagged as “AI”, much like how the freelance writers were complaining about.
Chapter 1 of Ir Abelas, before and after:
Chapter 1 through Quillbot:

Chapter 45 of Ir Abelas, before and after:
Chapter 45 without commas or double hyphens:
Chapter 45 through Quillbot:

Even the Ai detection websites caution against this:

To Durgeapologist, Fangbanger3000, and friends: If you do actually read this, I hope you realize that your posts have done more harm than good to the community. You are correct that AI is a potential threat to creative spaces, but you have gone about addressing it in the worst possible way. By creating multiple posts across platforms with the intent of creating a negative perspective toward certain authors and their fictions rather than the use of AI as a whole—not to mention the counter-accusations with personal attacks rather than focusing on the issue at hand—you are creating an environment that fosters negativity, bullying, and division—none of which are directions to take a sustainable and healthy community. AI Detection is the Wild West right now. There is no way to determine if something written is AI through the use of algorithms, and it requires the use of human intervention and careful comparison to previous works to be within a certain level of certainty that it is AI. Our hope is that in the future, you will take time, step back, and consider all possible sides before causing a stir in the community like this.

TW !!! (unfortunately no smut under the cut) but I ask you to read this if you are navigating the current situation with sturniololuv08. If you don’t want to read any more negativity, you can scroll past or uh… go on my masterlist 🤷♀️ just a suggestion. Nevertheless, here’s my opinion on the problem. Just know idgaf about hate in my inbox so if you send it in that’s a waste of your battery. But whatever suits you. ANYWAY…
There is absolutely nothing to defend here. Just know if you are trying to justify what’s happened then you are sick and most definitely part of the problem.
What Bri did may be common on other sites like AO3 or even in hard copy books, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay. For example: Just because war happens in other countries it doesn’t mean it’s okay. Just because education is restricted in other countries, doesn’t mean it’s okay. Right ?
So let’s all stop pretending that there is nothing wrong here when there clearly is. The fact that @sturniololuv08 REFUSED to remove the fanfic is mind-blowing. Her fic the kind of thing that governments would remove from the internet. So what makes you think it’s anything far from illegal and disgusting ??
I’m not hating on anybody’s personal fantasies. (As much as I’d love to say my piece). But there are some —a lot— of things that you can and should keep to yourself.
I don’t want to talk too much about the contents of the fanfiction or the AU. As a people pleaser and as someone who just doesn’t like trouble, I kept my mouth shut. But as an account with a following, I cannot just sit around and wait for change.
If you are reading this, please consider how writing like Bri’s can affect people who have been in negative situations. I won’t comment on the whole ‘flirting’ affair with Kay because I don’t know enough and frankly, it’s none of my business. But if there’s anything you take from this message today, let it be that sexual assault is not a joke. It’s not romantic. It’s not a ‘small’ deal. It is an offense.
That’s all. I promise there’ll be more positivity on my account soon. Also let me know if there are any typos. SZIASZTOK !!

KOSA is soon to be voted on in senate. Here's why you should oppose it.
Through KOSA, the government will be able to control of topics they oppose on the internet under the guise of protecting children from disturbing/inappropriate content. This isn't just limited to most websites requiring age verification and/or parental controls, but the FTC can also demand websites to straight up remove content it deems inappropriate
And even though it's taken up the lion's share of noise, this won't just be limited to queer topics and reproductive subjects, but literally anything the current ruling party opposes.
Think about the multitudes of things that the modern republican party takes umbrage with that have nothing to do with queerness or abortion, or even the bipartisan response to current social movements: Criticizing Christianity, criticizing Christian teachings in public schools, sharing footage of and/or criticizing war crimes and atrocities committed by the US military or its allies (like Israel), teaching about the US' involvement in the Atlantic slave trade, the civil war, the struggles of black people in the Jim Crow era, the genocide and forced migration of the Native Americans, global warming and climate change, or even discussion on how capitalism has negatively impacted our lives broadly.
All of these subjects can be deemed as inappropriate for minors due to their violent, heavy, and/or contentious subject matter. As such, they can be outright censored through KOSA's "duty of care" under the justification of these subject feeding into mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression.
And I'm not being hyperbolic in my language here, because this exact line of logic has already been used to enact book bans, abortion bans, and gender affirming care bans at the state level and was also the basis for the push to ban "Critical race theory" from universities. The US government will use this bill to censor the internet, and if the republican party wins the presidency this November and they re-categorize the FTC to being a schedule F commission (As outlined in Project 2025), it'll be done under completely partisan motivations. DO NOT let the rhetoric of "protecting children" blind you to the true implications of this bill. If you care about free speech in this country, you should be firmly against it. EDIT: I initially assumed the bill had passed in the senate, but, as it was brought to my attention, the senate has thankfully only moved to cloture the initial debate on the bill. The bill still has yet to be voted on in the senate, but they're going to call a vote in the near future. And it'll also have to go through the house as well. In the meantime, you can still find and contact your senator through this website here: https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm As well as your local representative through this website here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

Today I learned of Tumblr's plan to begin (or continue) selling user content to OpenAI and Midjourney, which is the last straw for me and my presence on the site. Regardless of their claims that users can opt out of this, I frankly just don't believe them.
I've used Tumblr since 2010 when I started photography, and this blog is the largest existing archive of my work on the internet. It's a liability for me to continue to allow it to be hosted on a site that is now actively contributing to the theft of art, directly from artists. I know my photos have already been stolen, repurposed and claimed countless times over the years from Tumblr and other sites, but I have to draw a line here. I will unfortunately be removing all my past work from this blog, perhaps something I should have done when the suspicions first arose about Automattic's greed.
Many aspects of my creative career have been negatively impacted by AI already, I just see this as one less path in which to be exploited.
That being said I want to thank all of you for the support over the decade plus I've been active on here, I stuck around much longer than most because of my appreciation for a website that was a huge influence to my early creativity as a kid. I still think it was the best format for social media, and I really am going to miss Tumblr and the creative community it used to be.
I will still do my best to utilize this blog as a place to make announcements about any new projects, such as my upcoming book I aim to release at the end of the year.
You can still find me and my (Glaze/Nightshade protected) work elsewhere on the internet at Instagram, Twitter, and my website.
So long,
Brendon
