Who laid your #eggs? 🐔 We are fussy with where we buy our eggs from. 🥚 Luckily, this weekend we are #chickensitting these gorgeous #rescuehens that were too old for the battery farm they grew up in. 🐣 They were brought to a lovely little mini-farm where they have a nice safe enclosure and they can get out and scratch about in the dirt. 🐤 They love exploring and pecking at the plants and dirt in their new home. They also have lovely personality! One is the boss, Rose is the dopey one who keeps getting lost or running into things, and one loves following humans around. 😁 Chickens can be treated absolutely terribly in egg farms. 😢 Even some of the places that call themselves "free range" will still de-beak new born #chicks (an incredibly painful process that can and often does go wrong) and throw the male chicks into bins or blenders *alive*. On top of that there are the food miles of the eggs and what the chooks were fed to consider. I recommend trying to find a greengrocers or smaller produce shop to ask about their eggs. This special lady is Cara. She is a feisty little bird who has an insatiable appetite for life. She is an #exxbatteryhen who in this photo you see her recovering from surgery at the Bird Vet Melbourne, to fix her two broken legs, broken wing, and prolapsed cloaca. . Cara is suspected to have been injured during transport, from being crushed under the combined weight of the other hens and their transport crates that were stacked on top of her. Cara was rescued from an abattoir (slaughter house) just hours before she was scheduled to be slaughtered. She was one of the 60 chickens rescued by @dreamershenrescue and of them, roughly 7 had broken bones and other injuries. . UPDATE: Today (3/13/17), Cara finally gets to feel what it is like to be loved and cared for. She was spoiled at the vet so now she has a real hankering for fresh fruit over grains, which is hilarious to her loving humans her rescued her, but they figure that she can have whatever she likes. It's been a dog-filled kiln with no black labs in sight (unusually). Some work has been completed and sent off, other pieces just awaiting a final glaze firing to take place very shortly. 🙂 We travelled a very short distance yesterday to collect four rescue hens we had booked many weeks ago. The hens are less than 18 months old and would otherwise have been culled as their egg-laying tails off at this age apparently. Our previous hens lived to ten years old until the fox got 'em when we were away one weekend with Uly. So, the chicken run has been double -secured and these rescue hens can look forwad to many, many years of happy scrabbling around on the compost pile. The Lay of The Land

There have been several creatures acquired at Parish Punk Compound in 2015 (and hopefully that will be all). A stray pup, a stray kitten and five rescued hens are the new arrivals. The hens (Boudicca, Debbie Harry, PolyStyrene, Fatty and Georgina) are all from Littlehill Animal Rescue based in Kildare, a charity that receives hens from farmers that are past their prime egg-laying days and are destined for the meat factory. The birds are distributes amongst interested people who would like to keep them as pets – with eggy benefits.  Mine were free-rangers about 1 year old.   I wondered why they were a bit skinny with minimal feathers when I got them so I looked into the kind of conditions they are kept in.  According to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine document “Guidelines for free-range poultry producers and slaughterhouses”, in order to sell eggs or meat as Free Range, the birds should have: “…during at least half their lifetime continuous daytime access to open-air runs comprising an area mainly covered by vegetation of not less than:  1 metre squared per chicken fowl” (my italics). That’s not too bad.  There is no reference to “battery” in the document as this method was banned in the EU in 2012, rather “barn reared” and I made the presumption that these are the specifications that apply to the other half of their life or when it’s not daytime: “…. the stocking rate per m2 floor space does not exceed, in the case of: …. chickens: 15 birds….” Hmm… not so great, especially now I have seen how far a hen likes to ramble if the mood takes her. If you eat eggs or meat, I think it is worthwhile taking a look at the agriculture.gov.ie website and searching for “Poultry” in the Farming section where the guidelines for producers can be read (dardni.gov.uk for Norn Iron readers) and inform yourself about where your food comes from. When I moved to a rural area I was struck by how often I saw chicken or pork on people’s forks contrasted with how rarely I saw them, eh, frolicking in the undulating pastures. Pork products (for example) are cheap because a pig in my weight division (50 –85 kg) gets to live in a pen of 0.55 metre squared. (Current Pig Welfare minimum requirements of DAFM). My intention here is to inform and offer possible solutions, not just make you feel bad.  A quick internet search yields various producers that rear animals with dignity and sell/deliver meat, if you must eat it.  An option for eggs if you cannot adopt them yourself is to visit the farm of the supplier at your local farmer’s market and if you are happy with what you see, buy from them.
