For everyone who loves fanfiction, tiktok, tumblr, and other fandoms sites I have some information that you should see.
There are bills like KOSA, the RESTRICT ACT, and others that might be passed which could affect all your favorite social media sites, and even ao3. These bills can also damage online privacy, security, and access to certain helpful sites such has suicide prevention resources (this refers to KOSA in particular). The dangerous part is that these bills pose as something helpful, when in reality it will be used in ways that harm others. For example, KOSA claims to make kids safer but it actually restricts access to LGBTQ+ content and other life saving resources.
You can go to a website called “badinternetbills.com” to learn more and take action. Please email and/or call your representatives to prevent these bills from being passed!

Hiya Guys! Do you like medias like Twitter, Tumbler, Instagram, Ao3, Wattpad, and more? Well I have some terrible news! The government and a bunch of other shitty and terrible organizations such as the heritage organization are trying to push the KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) bill this month, which basically gives the government COMPLETE control over the internet and can censor whatever they want. And what they want to censor is queer and trans media to “protect the children” when that’s not the case, they just want to get rid of everything they don’t like that’s on the internet.
Oh let’s not forget about the restrict act…
So anyway if you wanna keep ur media and not have it censored and monitored by the US government sign these petitions to make sure these terrible bills don’t get passed.

take action @ badinternetbills.com
send postcards and emails like this:
I oppose all bills that weaken end-to-end encryption, infringe upon teenagers’ constitutional right to free speech on the internet, and enable censorship of valuable online resources for abortion seekers and LGBTQ+ communities. If you truly care about young people’s experience on the internet, you should pass comprehensive data privacy legislation and oppose EARN IT, KOSA, the RESTRICT Act, STOP CSAM, the Cooper Davis Act, and age restrictions on social media.

What's really crazy to me is that, if Restrict Act, EARN IT Act, and KOSA manage to pass, then TikTok of all things will have officially done more damage to the internet than any site I could think of. I mean, as far as I know, even 4Chan has never caused so many problems that it actually led to the censorship and surveillance of the entire internet.

I know I don't like TikTok.
But the RESTRICT BILL IS A BAD INTERNET BILL!
It's on the site!
STOP THE BILL! IF THIS PASSES, WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'LL TAKE DOWN! THEY MAY EVEN TAKE DOWN AO3, REDDIT, EVEN HERE!
I'm already doing this with KOSA but:
CAN I GET A FUCK THE RESTRICT ACT IN THE CHAT?

GRV.T-SSG SYSTEMS VER 11/22/23
Hey, guys, just wanna remind y'all, that Bad Internet Bills has a collection of information on the United States Government's intentions to surveil and control the Internet Infrastructure to the point of violating privacy and civil liberties of the people.
The RESTRICT ACT (aka "TikTok Ban Bill"), along with a host of other bad bills, basically intends to criminalize dissent and penalize individuals using or interacting with digital infrastructure they deem 'foreign adversaries' with million dollar fines, and more than 20+ years of prison time.
It's a bad scene, and I would urge you all to look into these bills, get in contact with your representatives, lawmakers, and make some noise about this. We've already been doing this, but for anyone who isn't 100% about the issue, now if your time. Research.
Check out TikTok user, diedmadaboutit (Diggity) and their summary of the RESTRICT bill, spread those summary videos around. They urge you to read the bill on your own, however. The spread of information beyond mine or their perspectives is vital to preventing it from becoming a reality.
(The recent FCC report from Brendan Carr might have something to do with this bill, or not. I'm not sure.)
Don't just reblog this or like this and call it a day. Create your own post(s) about it,, talk to the people you know off-line about it. Get people engaged in what will have far reaching consequences for everyone in the States.
Keep your heads, keep your cool. Use your dread and fears to create informed organization around the prevention of our government from stripping us of our rights.
Because if they can do it here, they will do it elsewhere.
Happy hunting.

I would rather a solar storm knock out all of Earth's satellites and technology and be the reason why we lose Ao3 than lose it to the U.S. government.
***Edit: this isn't talking specifically about Ao3 being down on 7/10. I'm referencing all of the proposed bills in the U.S. government which threaten what little privacy we still have on the internet, threaten to censor sites predominantly populated by minority groups(POC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, non-Christian, etc), and threaten to take away the way kids/teens/young adults express themselves on the internet. For more information, research the Kids Online Safety Act(KOSA), the Restrict Act, and the Earn It Act. There are petitions you can sign, letters/email templates you can send to your Representatives and Senators, and scripts you can use to call your Representatives and Senators :)
#at least then it's a natural disaster#*disaster meaning the loss of technology will be crippling to humanity#at least then I'd have the closure that we really had no chance#if the government takes it then it's the conscious decision to censor and control us#i will not lose my only consistent sources of happiness#see what taking away freedom of expression will do#i guarantee the fallout will be ugly#sam's thoughts#sam says stuff#sam's ranting#sam says shit#sam's club#sam's life#sam's gas can#ao3#KOSA#kids online safety act#restrict act#earn it act#PLEASE SIGN PETITIONS AND CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES & SENATORS

Please sign petitions and call your representatives. These useless and harmful bills have bipartisan support so its an issue across the board. This site can inform you of all the bills, give you easy access to petitions, and offer scripts for when you call.

Hey Americans watch out of the protect kids act (it won’t) and it would probably actively take down ao3 for good if you don’t want that to happen share the news to everyone because I would rather not have the safe spaces of lgbtq+ taken away and I’m sure you would not want that either !

So we have this recent bill that's started making it way through Congress: the "RESTRICT Act".
The link above will help with reading up on it, and seeing where it is in the flow.
@dankxsinatra @thrown-away-opinions since you wanted a post about the matter that's clean.
Anyway, make of it what you will.

An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress
The DATA Act and the RESTRICT Act are un-American
518 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
I'm alarmed by the Ban TikTok discussion & the RESTRICT Act. We're a democratic country with a First Amendment that guarantees free expression. How does banning a social media platform abide by that principle? Especially since the US government condemns authoritarian governments in other parts of the world for blocking US-based social networks. Examples:
When Nigeria banned Twitter for seven months in June 2021, the U.S. condemned it, reiterating its support for "the fundamental human right of free expression & access to information as a pillar of democracy."
Individuals responsible for the blocking of social media applications in Iran were condemned as "engaging in censorship activities that prohibit, limit, or penalize the exercise of freedom of expression or assembly by citizens of Iran."
When American digital platforms have been banned or severely restricted by governments--including the Chinese Communist Party, Pakistan, & Uganda--seeking to silence & obstruct the open flow of communication & information, the US calls these entities out for it. So why are we doing the same?
TikTok is a red herring. The DATA Act & the RESTRICT Act are very broad & could lead to other apps or communications services with connections to foreign countries being banned in the US. The stated intention is to target apps/services that pose a threat to national security; the way it's currently written raises serious human & civil rights concerns that should be far more important to you.
Caitlin Vogus says: "Any bill that would allow the US government to ban an online service that facilitates Americans' speech raises serious First Amendment concerns…" And those concerns will impact marginalized & oppressed people & groups more.
The "reasoning" behind Ban TikTok is not sound. The racist fearmongering around China is bad enough. Worse is the core of the argument -- data being collected & shared & used against people -- is a problem with ALL social media. Why isn't Congress focusing on that? The apps on your phone (Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Twitter) are constantly monitoring you & sending information about you to data brokers. Info that can be easily tied to you as an individual despite claims that all the data is "anonymized".
Congress should be addressing the larger problem & not one social network. Restricting what data they can collect about users & forbidding them from selling that data will address the issue with TikTok, too.
I urge you to kill the DATA Act & the RESTRICT Act. They need to be tossed out & more measured legislation proposed in their place that addresses the foundational problems of social media apps & services & the data they collect & who they share it with & how they & other entities use that data.
I know that's not as easy or sexy as Ban TikTok! It does address our Constitutional right to assemble & free expression. That's far more important than knee-jerk reactions & bandwagon jumping.
