Divine Dragons, Gods, Demons, and Monsters in the Rune Factory series

So, I’ve been kicking around some worldbuilding thoughts about what connects magical beings/creatures in the RF universe. (General spoilers ahead).

We’re told that all monsters go back to the Forest of Beginnings when they’re killed because all weapons are enchanted with tamitaya. However, Divine Dragons also go there just when they straight up die, but they can be reborn?

I know some folks consider the Forest of Beginnings as RF’s version of heaven, which I think is partially true — except it’s specifically for non-mortal beings. I think mortal races go to an actual Heaven, and that’s just because Lucas specifically mentions it when he almost accidentally kills Alice/Ares while singing. (I like to think their heaven is still different from ours too, in that mortals can be reincarnated similarly to monsters. They’re just reborn instead of coming through gates).

Lucas’ existence in the RF universe also introduces us to the concept of positive and negative runes. Since the series’ inception, we’ve had seven magic elements (fire, water, earth, wind, light, dark, love), and four runey types (grass, water, rock, tree). It’s easy to assume positive/negative runes are just synonymous with light/dark runes, but I don’t think that’s the case — I think they’re normal runes of any element (or pure/not elementally connected runes) that have been charged with divine/harmonious energy or demonic/corrupted/chaotic energy. These energies are drawn to each other like magnets and cancel each other out. Gods/Divine Dragons can produce positively charged runes, or in Lumenivia and Umbradea’s case, they can purify/convert corrupted runes.

Monsters are essentially neutrally aligned deities, except in the case of boss monsters that have been corrupted. Some seem more “good” like woolies and others “evil” like ghosts/reapers, but they don’t actually affect people’s fortunes on Earth like gods or demons.

Demons aren’t mentioned much in RF, but I’m thinking specifically of the black drake that hunted Fuuka and the Fathomless Dread. The former is a weak demon, whereas the latter is on the same level or higher than the Divine Dragons. Both of them cause strife with their existence.

Gods/divine dragons and demons are essentially opposites: one produces positively charged runes and attracts negative runes, the other vice versa.

While deities have the most control over people’s fortunes, I also think mortals can create positive/negative runes by their own actions too. Working hard literally makes you luckier, essentially.

Since positive/negative charges in runes aren’t really visible unless you’re using something like the Soulsphere reader, I don’t think mortals generally know about the magi-science behind how fortune works. Instead, they’re just aware that gods bring them good luck, and demons curses.

As an aside, I’m not sure how Mother Earth fits into this deistic theory. We know She’s the force behind the power of the Earthmates’ abilities, and it’s implied She’s just the Earth itself, but She’s probably neutrally aligned. If She produced positively charged runes, there’d be an imbalance.

I have a lot more thoughts about runes in general (including why they’re called that and not mana or whatever), but that’s a post for another day.

EDIT: As of November 14th 2023, I've decided to start keeping track of when a post does not include a single-letter element. Single-letter elements are, in order: H B C N O F P S K V Y I W U. These posts will be tagged with "missing single".

I use a script to search for the symbols, but it can't read the words in images, so they have to be retyped into the script 100% manually. I'll most likely still do it, but just keep that in mind when sending in posts with lots of images.

I'll only analyze posts where it's very clear what order things are read in; charts, graphs, doodle pages, and other images with words all over the place won't be counted.

When it comes to URLs, I don't count them for the main tally unless they show up in a screenshot or as a tag somewhere in the thread; instead, the URLs of the users in the thread are listed out afterwards in their own separate tallies, with the elements listed in the order that they appear in the person's URL (this does not include URLs that only appear in screenshots/tags).

Rune factory 6 speculation

With RF6 & RFPD being announced I thought I would do some speculation and analysis for the two games.

This one will be just for RF6 with another for PD coming out later, as there is more material to dissect and I have a lot more speculation and theories for that game

Most of this one is rambling and speculation so not much of this will come true... Probably.

The floating city.

This floating city I'm talking about and I think it will be our home in some way shape or form. As in the logos from the previous games, the protagonist house has been symbolised in it.

In rf3, the 3 in the logo is decorated with flowers. This can either be in relation to the town rf3 is based around, Sharance, a flower dominated town. Or the fact that by the end of the game, the Sharance tree is in bloom with flowers.

In rf4, it has a green dragon in the logo, and ventuswill, a green elder dragon, can be found outside of Lest/Frey's room.

In rf5 the SEED logo can be seen on the logo, And Ares/Alice bedroom is above the seed HQ.

So with this in mind, I want to weigher that the sky city / island is where the rf6 protag will be staying. Or that it's the main local of the game. Which is probably more likely.

(side note, this has nothing to do with all of this speculation, but personally the floating city is reminding me of the final fantasy logos, especially ff13's.)

The architecture

On the main building with the halo on it, it has these odd patterns on it.

For me, these remind me of fairy wings. Which is a bit odd for rf standards. As fairies aren't a common race and but are a type of enemy (the common fairy monsters and Ambrosia to name a few) . Perhaps this is supposed to maybe be more for the eleven race?

Though this new rf game will be based in a new continent called Ardonia, so maybe fairies are seen as a race such as dwarfs there? What new races will be introduced in this new continent?

In the video, it's stated that this is the architecture for Ardonia. Which seems to say that Ardonia has biomimicry in most of its architecture. But also it's oddly... Modern, reminding myself of ff again.

What's your thoughts on this?

Halo / Ring

When I see it I personally think "rune energy", perhaps this game will be more nature themed than the two previous games which had some more "high tech" elements of them. With the wing shaped elements of the building and the "rune energy" (or magic) halo, this is the turn that I think this game will be giving.

Maybe more details will go into what EXACTLY earthmaes are? Perhaps earthmaes are more common in Ardonia?

Though perhaps, it may go in the other direction and Ardonia is more high tech than Norad. Tanks, floating cities, airblimps are well known to the rune factory series so perhaps it's going in a much more modern direction. (More Innocent Life than Rune Factory ig)

The six looks like water rippling obviously so maybe it's set in a port town? Or we are living right in the middle of the ocean maybe? It's giving me some RFO vibes personally.

The pattern on the right hand side of the 6 reminds me personally of scales, which reminds me of one thing. Aquaticus, the elder dragon of water and transformation. Though this is a new region we are based in so it's unknown how the elder dragons are perceived there. If Aquaticus is important to this game, perhaps the protag will be able to transform, probably not as majorly as Micah but more of a quick and small anime magic girl esc. transformation.

I can't figure out the pattern on the right hand side of the 6 though it reminds me personally of a horn.

(most of my speculations are probably wrong though lol, as we currently only have a logo to go off of. It's like putting the subtitle of a dragon quest game or the logo for a final fantasy gave and just saying good luck guessing.)

How I feel about this character:

homosexually! Lest is my primary blorbo... my beloved. I will never stop thinking about him. He’s cute, sweet, and a little bit silly, which makes him the perfect whump target lmfao. Make that ray of sunshine suffer!!!

My unpopular opinion about this character:

he deserves more attention and appreciation in the rf4 fandom!! Everyone is a Frey main and I understand why people prefer her over Lest, but sometimes I wish people would give my little guy a chance too :( it's why I focus on commissioning/drawing him the most. I need to recruit people to the Lest agenda

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

a headcanon fact:

oh man it depends. I like to think of him as a gay trans man, but I also like to hc him as a he/him transmasc butch lesbian. i feel like all of my interpretations of him kind of exist at once so i will give multiple "facts" for each one :)

in situations where he's trans and he likes guys, i think he's a bit more subdued/reserved. he feels more societal pressure to fit in with the bachelors because of all the little comments that they make about liking girls. otoh i see him acting more like Frey if he's a butch lesbian – brash, earnest, and not afraid to speak his mind. he chills with both the guys and the gals at sleepovers and he doesn't care what people think!!

when both Lest and Frey are present in an AU, i like to think of them as siblings. sometimes i see them as fraternal twins, sometimes Frey is Lest’s younger yet more experienced sister. either way they have a pretty close bond! frey teases him a lot but he never complains bc he knows it's all in good jest and it takes a lot to piss him off. they joke about being bodyswapped at birth and team up to bully doug.
