Summer Film Preview: 27 of the Most Anticipated Movies of the Season!
Among ET's 90 top picks for summer are our 27 most anticipated films of the season.
Every summer, there is no shortage of new films to blow audiences away at theaters -- and blow away records at the box office. This summer, things are looking especially massive. Blockbuster season kicks off in a huge way with the highly anticipated back-to-back releases of Deadpool 2and Solo: A Star Wars Story, ushering in an onslaught of franchise films with new installments of Jurassic World, Marvel's Ant-Man, Mission: Impossible and The Purge.
Not everything is a sequel, though. Of the originals is the eagerly awaited adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians, marking the first time a major studio has produced an all-Asian-led film since The Joy Luck Club; Spike Lee's latest, BlacKkKlansman; and -- because it wouldn't be summer without one -- a shark attack flick, The Meg, starring Jason Statham.
But no matter what you’re looking forward to, there's plenty to choose from among these 27 sure-to-be hit films.
Deadpool 2 (Out Now)
The Deadpool sequel is bigger, louder and packed with more violence and superpeople, dick jokes and fourth wall-breaking meta-ness than the original X-Men-adjacent movie. And while that all sounds like a recipe for a bloated case of sequelitis, Ryan Reynolds and co. not only pull it off, but top the first.
Directed by: David Leitch | Written by: Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Ryan Reynolds Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams
Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25)
Forget everything you think you know about the legendary smuggler and prepare for the unexpected. That's the best advice we can give you about Star Wars' latest anthology installment, which, sure, features the Kessel Run and Han Solo and Chewbacca's origin story, then blasts off for so much more.
Directed by: Ron Howard | Written by: Jonathan Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan Starring: Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Emilia Clarke
American Animals (June 1)
Tumblr media
The Orchard / MoviePass Ventures
According to the minds behind American Animals, while most movies are based on a true story, this one is a true story, about four college students who plan "one of the most audacious art heists in U.S. history." It also marks the first appearance on this list by the true star of the summer movie season: Ann Dowd.
Directed by: Bart Layton | Written by: Bart Layton Starring: Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner, Jared Abrahamson, Ann Dowd
Hereditary (June 8)
Tumblr media
A24
Following its screening at Sundance earlier this year, Hereditary was hailed as the scariest horror movie in years -- if not of all time. As for what actually transpires in the film, well, that is best left vague. Brace yourself for hypnotically unnerving tongue pops and flashbacks to Toni Collette's iconic turn in The Sixth Sense.
Directed by: Ari Aster | Written by: Ari Aster Starring: Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd
Ocean's 8 (June 8)
This year's Met Gala might as well have been early promo for Ocean's 8, which centers on another heist-happy Ocean, Debbie, who assembles a team of women to help rob a fictional Met Gala. (If you do some simple math, it seems Anne Hathaway's mark is one of the eight, too.) Unfortunately, Rihanna will likely not be dressed as a sexy pope.
Directed by: Gary Ross | Written by: Gary Ross and Olivia Milch Starring: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna
Won't You Be My Neighbor? (June 8)
Tumblr media
Focus Features
If you were a child in the '60s -- or '70s, '80s, '90s, the aughts, really, if you were a child ever -- then Won't You Be My Neighbor? will be a nostalgic return to your younger years, a look at the long-running and formative TV series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and the man behind it, the late Fred Rogers.
Directed by: Morgan Neville
Hearts Beat Loud (June 8)
Tumblr media
Gunpowder & Sky
This gem of an indie is for anyone who has ever wished Nick Offerman could be your best friend, your dad or both: Kiersey Clemons plays Offerman's daughter and reluctant bandmate as they navigate fame and family in Hearts Beat Louder. Sprinkle in a queer romance and an earworm-y soundtrack, and what more could you ask for?
Directed by: Brett Haley | Written by: Brett Haley and Marc Basch Starring: Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons, Ted Danson, Toni Collette, Sasha Lane, Blythe Danner
Hotel Artemis (June 8)
Tumblr media
Global Road Entertainment
Read this logline: "Set in riot-torn, near-future Los Angeles, Hotel Artemis is a high-octane action-thriller starring Jodie Foster as The Nurse, who runs a secret, members-only hospital for criminals." Now re-read that sentence over and over and over until you go insane and this becomes your most anticipated movie of the year.
Directed by: Drew Pearce | Written by: Drew Pearce Starring: Jodie Foster, Dave Bautista, Sofia Boutella, Zachary Quinto, Sterling K. Brown, Jeff Goldblum
Incredibles 2 (June 15)
Tumblr media
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
It has been well over a decade since the original Incredibles arrived in theaters and, even now, under the looming threat of superhero saturation, that first film remains one of the best superhero movies period. Finally, Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack are back, with Frozone and, of course, Edna.
Directed by: Brad Bird | Written by: Brad Bird Starring: Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Samuel L. Jackson, Catherine Keener, Sophia Bush
Tag (June 15)
Tumblr media
Warner Bros. Pictures
This is a movie about tag -- as in, the game in which you tag someone and they are then "it." Specifically, Tag is about a group of childhood buddies who have been playing tag one month out of the year, every year, for 30 years. If you are wondering, Where do they come up with this?!, it was a Wall Street Journal article.
Directed by: Jeff Tomsic | Written by: Rob McKittrick and Mark Steilen Starring: Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Jon Hamm, Hannibal Buress, Isla Fisher, Leslie Bibb
Damsel (June 22)
Tumblr media
Magnolia Pictures
If you hear that Robert Pattinson is starring in a Western, you probably have a notion of what that film is. Damsel is not the movie you're imagining, guaranteed -- unless, of course, you pictured a screwball comedy about a pioneer who voyages west with a drunkard and a miniature horse named Butterscotch.
Directed by: David Zellner and Nathan Zellner | Written by: David Zellner and Nathan Zellner Starring: Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, David Zellner
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (June 22)
In the colossally successful Jurassic World, the dinosaurs destroyed the park, as dinosaurs are wont to do, and now Isla Nublar is threatening to destroy the dinosaurs. Thus, Claire and Owen are enlisted to help save the dinosaurs from a second extinction -- and that's only the beginning of this adventure.
Directed by: J.A. Bayona | Written by: Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum, James Cromwell, Justice Smith
Under the Silver Lake (June 22)
Tumblr media
A24
Something about those hot summer nights must make us itch for a mystery, because this is yet another noir-y flick arriving in cineplexes, albeit a very modern take on the genre. Andrew Garfield plays a stoner Angelino who begins sleuthing when his dream girl disappears in the middle of the night without a trace.
Directed by: David Robert Mitchell | Written by: David Robert Mitchell Starring: Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Topher Grace, Jimmi Simpson
The First Purge (July 4)
Tumblr media
Universal Pictures
There's something almost comforting about knowing that every (sometimes every other) Independence Day brings a new installment in the ongoing Purge franchise. Who knew a nutty little murder flick could have so much steam? This one goes back to the beginning and the invention of a government-sponsored killing spree.
Directed by: Gerard McMurray | Written by: James DeMonaco Starring: Lex Scott Davis, Y'lan Noel, Luna Lauren Velez, Joivan Wade, Marisa Tomei
Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6)
Consider the Ant-Man sequel a respite for those still reeling over the ending of Infinity War, a plucky comedic romp about heroes who shrink, supersize and now fly, too, which probably won't leave you frantically wiping away tears as the theater lights come on. Also, Michelle Pfeiffer plays a superhero!
Directed by: Peyton Reed | Written by: Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari and Paul Rudd Starring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hannah John-Kamen, Michael Peña
Sorry to Bother You (July 6)
Tumblr media
Annapurna Pictures
There is original, and then there is Sorry to Bother You. If a stranger, more out-there film has ever been made, I haven't seen it. I've never seen anything like this, a satiric tale about a telemarketer who uses his "white voice" to get ahead that feels at once painstakingly plotted and completely free-associated.
Directed by: Boots Riley | Written by: Boots Riley Starring: Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Steven Yeun, Armie Hammer
Whitney (July 6)
Whitney is not the first documentary to turn the lens on Whitney Houston in the years since her 2012 death, but it is the first to be endorsed by her estate, featuring interviews with loved ones of Houston who had never spoken publicly before and bombshell revelations that made news ahead of Whitney's official release.
Directed by: Kevin Macdonald
Eighth Grade (July 13)
Tumblr media
A24
You know how adults always say, "I'm so happy I didn't grow up when there was social media." Watch this Sundance drama, comedian Bo Burnham's directorial debut, and feel that tenfold, alternately a cringey and heartwarming look at what it means to be coming into your own -- yes, with YouTube and Twitter.
Directed by: Bo Burnham | Written by: Bo Burnham Starring: Elsie Fisher, Josh Hamilton
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (July 20)
Is Meryl Streep's character still alive for the Mamma Mia! sequel? Supposedly. We do know that we will see a younger version of Donna (played by Lily James) as the ABBA singalong jumps back in time to show the Dynamos' origin story, while in the present, Donna's daughter is pregnant with a baby of her own.
Directed by: Ol Parker | Written by: Ol Parker Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Lily James, Colin Firth, Cher
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (July 27)
Tumblr media
Paramount Pictures
After successfully completing five other supposedly impossible missions, whatever Ethan Hunt is tasked with in Fallout should be considered mission: pretty difficult but manageable. Still, Tom Cruise continues to up the ante in insane and preposterous ways, like jumping out of a plane at 25,000 feet, for one.
Directed by: Christopher McQuarrie | Written by: Christopher McQuarrie Starring: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett
Christopher Robin (Aug. 3)
If you enjoyed last year's period drama Goodbye Christopher Robin, about the real boy who inspired the creation of Winnie the Pooh, then you are sure to enjoy this, too, Disney's less historical, more fantastical tale about grown-up Christopher Robin and how Pooh and the rest of the Hundred Acre Wood gang help him rediscover his imagination.
Directed by: Marc Forster | Written by: Alex Ross Perry Starring: Ewan McGregor, Hayley Atwell, Jim Cummings, Chris O'Dowd, Brad Garrett, Toby Jones
The Spy Who Dumped Me (Aug. 3)
I would pay money to watch Kate McKinnon read the phone book. Thankfully, she gets much more to do in this action-comedy, in which Mila Kunis plays the unwitting woman dumped by a spy. McKinnon plays her bestie, and the two quickly find themselves in over their heads trying to stop a terrorist group and save the world.
Directed by: Susanna Fogel | Written by: David Iserson and Susanna Fogel Starring: Mila Kunis, Kate McKinnon, Sam Heughan, Gillian Anderson, Justin Theroux
BlacKkKlansman (Aug. 10)
Tumblr media
Focus Features
Spike Lee is back with his latest joint, the so-crazy-it-must-be-true saga of Ron Stallworth, the first black police officer in Colorado Springs, and his undercover operation to infiltrate a local Ku Klux Klan chapter, which was so successful that he eventually became its head.
Directed by: Spike Lee | Written by: Spike Lee, David Rabinowitz, Charlie Wachtel, Kevin Willmott Starring: John David Washington, Adam Driver, Topher Grace, Laura Harrier
The Meg (Aug. 10)
Tumblr media
Warner Bros. Pictures
No summer is complete without a silly shark attack movie, and for the summer of 2018, The Meg fits that bill and then some. First of all, the shark in question is a megalodon, which basically just means a REALLY BIG F**KING SHARK, and hopefully Jason Statham will punch it at some point, right?
Directed by: Jon Turteltaub | Written by: Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber Starring: Jason Statham, Ruby Rose, Rainn Wilson, Bingbing Li, Cliff Curtis, Masi Oka
Crazy Rich Asians (Aug. 17)
Based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians is about a Chinese American professor who travels to Singapore to meet her boyfriend's family and discovers they are -- you guessed it -- crazy rich! Hijinks ensue. This is also the first Hollywood movie with a majority Asian cast in 25 years, i.e., crazy overdue.
Directed by: Jon M. Chu | Written by: Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim Starring: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Ken Jeong
To All the Boys I've Loved Before (Aug. 17)
Tumblr media
Netflix
Here's one YA fans have been waiting for. German movies Part 1
Hey guys! I noticed how many people on this website are learning German or want to learn it. It is my mother tongue and I love German cinema. We all know that movies help to improve language skills, so I made a list about my favorite German films and some must-sees! I hope you enjoy these films!
Keinohrhasen (the main actor is problematic IRL and also in this movie but I still like it, a journalist has to work in a day care center because he fucked up Vladimir Klitschko’s party, he meets the girl he used to bully when he was a teenager and then they fall in love... this movie is so typical for that director lmao)
Zweiohrküken (the same characters as in Keinohrhasen, they move in together and it’s a mess, also the guy’s ex affair wants him back and the woman’s ex boyfriend - whose dick she describes as the eiffel tower - is back in the city and wants to be with her again, drama drama drama, cute, typical German rom-com)
Anatomie (very bloody! about a girl who wants to become a doctor, creepy things happen at her summer med school)
Die wilden Hühner (a kids’ movie based on famous books, a cute girl gang wants to save a few chicken from a member’s granny who wants to kill and freeze them, very cute film)
(T)raumschiff surprise (gay people in space, ICONIC)
Fack ju Göhte (supposed to mean Fuck you Goehte, a criminal pretends to be a teacher, great comedy, sexy main actor, CHANTAL CRY LESS NOISY!)
Good bye, Lenin (iconic movie, a woman was in coma for 8 months and her son makes her believe the GDR still exists, awesome soundtrack, great story, cute couple, very moving)
Die Welle (a teacher makes a social experiment about fascism with his class and it goes wrong!! a must-see!)
Pünktchen und Anton (adaption of a famous novel, cute movie for children but I’m in my twenties and I still love it, a rich girl and a poor boy become friends)
Die dunkle Seite des Mondes (don’t take drugs guys, just don’t! this movie will show you why! the main character goes crazy - but is it just because he took drugs? find out!!)
Jeune Homme ((Swiss)German and French film about a guy who makes an au pair year, gets laid by the neighbour lady and falls in love with the host parents’ oldest daughter)
7 Zwerge - Männer allein im Wald (it’s like Snow White and the 7 dwarfs but very trashy, the dwarfs are big, the prince has a wild hair style and Snow White loves playing with her barbie. Ah, and the evil queen’s outfits are iconic and weird)
Die wilden Kerle (a kids’ movie about boys who play soccer - we all love it! EVERYTHING’S ALRIGHT AS LONG AS YOU’RE WILD! BE WILD - DANGEROUS AND WILD!)
Sommer (teen movie about the first love, takes place on an island, skater boy meets rich boy and they both love the same girl, teenage drama, i don’t wanna spoil but some people almost die and sth burns down)
Das Missenmassaker (12 girls who want to be Miss Switzerland, bitch fights 24/7 and a lot of blood because a lot of people get killed)
For No Eyes Only (Rear Window for teenagers, a very interesting thriller, cute main characters)
Homevideo (a guy films himself while masturbating, someone finds the video and then the drama starts, his family also falls apart)
Grosse Mädchen weinen nicht (two teenage girls, lots of feelings, sex, dangerous things)
Lola rennt (reminds me of The Butterfly Effect, iconic film, i don’t even wanna say more about it just watch it)
Who am I - Kein System ist sicher (movies about hackers with big plans and sometimes you have no idea if what you see is what is real)
Das Leben der Anderen (must see! fucking sad tho)
Cannabis (a member of the Swiss federal council who is against the legalization of weed has to consume weed because he has a problem with his eye and this helps - ofc his life changes and gets wild)
Die Herbstzeitlosen (4 old Swiss woman open a lingerie shop in a lil village and people freak out)
Grounding - Die letzten Tage der Swissair (the story behind the grounding of Swissair, the national airline of Swizzy)
Das Experiment (based on a true story, some people engage in a prison experiment - some are good people, others are bad people and ofc it escalates quickly)

10 Interesting Fiction Books
Curfew by Jose Donoso
“Donoso’s engrossing novel spans 24 hours in the stifling and oppressive political atmosphere of 1985 Santiago under General Augusto Pinochet’s military regime.
A leftwing singer returns after 13 years of exile in Paris. His fame now faded and his politics softened, Mañungo Vera is no longer the revolutionary he once was. His visit coincides with the death of Matilde Neruda, widow of the Nobel prize-winning poet and icon of the Chilean left, Pablo Neruda.
Vera is reacquainted with old friends and comrades as they prepare for the funeral. But, caught out by the curfew, he is forced to spend an eventful night on the streets with his former lover, during which they have a dangerous run-in with her suspected torturer.
Donoso paints a harrowing picture of life under the repressive regime, and shows how negotiating its daily horrors damages both individuals and society. He also shines a harsh light on the left, as factions squabble and jockey for advantage from the funeral.
This intense, introspective tale reflects the political and spiritual decay of the nation, after more than a decade of dictatorship.” (Khaneka, P. 2015, April 9. The best books on Chile: start your reading here. 2020, September 27.)
The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
“Allende’s classic, hugely successful family saga is a masterwork of magic-realism. Fusing the personal with the political and fact with fantasy, it tells Chile’s recent history through several generations of the Trueba family, ending with a savage military coup that leads to the death of a president.
The principal protagonist, Esteban Trueba, is used to getting his own way – in his family (as an irascible patriarch), on his farm (as a wealthy landowner), and in the country (as a rightwing senator): “The day we can’t get our hands on the ballot boxes before the vote is counted, we’re done for.”
When a socialist candidate finally wins the presidential election, Trueba backs a coup. But in the ferocious denouement that follows, he finds himself sidelined as brutality and terror spiral under the newly installed military regime.
The novel celebrates the spirit and resilience of the Trueba women, which shine through the political tumult and family turbulence in this clever, witty and stunningly assured debut.
Allende’s father was a cousin of President Salvador Allende, who was overthrown and died during a military coup in 1973. In 1975, the author fled to Venezuela, and later moved to the US. She has said the book is an “attempt to recreate the country I had lost, the family I had lost”. (Khaneka, P. 2015, April 9. The best books on Chile: start your reading here. 2020, September 27.)
Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende
“Orphaned at birth, Eliza Sommers is raised in the British colony of Valparaíso, Chile, by the well-intentioned Victorian spinster Miss Rose and her more rigid brother Jeremy. Just as she meets and falls in love with the wildly inappropriate Joaquín Andieta, a lowly clerk who works for Jeremy, gold is discovered in the hills of northern California. By 1849, Chileans of every stripe have fallen prey to feverish dreams of wealth. Joaquín takes off for San Francisco to seek his fortune, and Eliza, pregnant with his child, decides to follow him.
As Eliza embarks on her perilous journey north in the hold of a ship and arrives in the rough-and-tumble world of San Francisco, she must navigate a society dominated by greedy men. But Eliza soon catches on with the help of her natural spirit and a good friend, the Chinese doctor Tao Chi’en. What began as a search for love ends up as the conquest of personal freedom.
A marvel of storytelling, Daughter of Fortune confirms once again Isabel Allende's extraordinary gift for fiction and her place as one of the world's leading writers” (Amazon)
The Savage Detective by Roberto Bolano
“In this dazzling novel, the book that established his international reputation, Roberto Bolaño tells the story of two modern-day Quixotes--the last survivors of an underground literary movement, perhaps of literature itself--on a tragicomic quest through a darkening, entropic universe: our own. The Savage Detectives is an exuberant, raunchy, wildly inventive, and ambitious novel from one of the greatest Latin American authors of our age.” (Amazon)
By Night in Chile by Roberto Bolano
“As through a crack in the wall, By Night in Chile's single night-long rant provides a terrifying, clandestine view of the strange bedfellows of Church and State in Chile. This wild, eerily compact novel―Roberto Bolano's first work available in English―recounts the tale of a poor boy who wanted to be a poet, but ends up a half-hearted Jesuit priest and a conservative literary critic, a sort of lap dog to the rich and powerful cultural elite, in whose villas he encounters Pablo Neruda and Ernst Junger. Father Urrutia is offered a tour of Europe by agents of Opus Dei (to study "the disintegration of the churches," a journey into realms of the surreal); and ensnared by this plum, he is next assigned―after the destruction of Allende―the secret, never-to-be-disclosed job of teaching Pinochet, at night, all about Marxism, so the junta generals can know their enemy. Soon, searingly, his memories go from bad to worse. Heart-stopping and hypnotic, By Night in Chile marks the American debut of an astonishing writer.” (Amazon)
Distant Star by Roberto Bolano
“The narrator saw that man for the first time in 1971 or 1972, when Allende was still President of Chile. He wrote distant and cautious poems, seduced women, and aroused indefinable mistrust in men. He saw him again after the coup, but at the time he was unaware that this aviator, who wrote Bible verses with the smoke of a WWII plane, and the poet were one, and the same. And so we are told the story of an impostor, of a man of many names, with no other moral than aesthetics, dandy of horror, murderer and photographer of fear, a barbarian artist who took his creations to their last and lethal consequences.” (Amazon)
Ways of Going Home by Alejandro Zambra
“Alejandro Zambra's Ways of Going Home begins with an earthquake, seen through the eyes of an unnamed nine-year-old boy who lives in an undistinguished middle-class housing development in a suburb of Santiago, Chile. When the neighbors camp out overnight, the protagonist gets his first glimpse of Claudia, an older girl who asks him to spy on her uncle Raúl. In the second section, the protagonist is the writer of the story begun in the first section. His father is a man of few words who claims to be apolitical but who quietly sympathized―to what degree, the author isn't sure―with the Pinochet regime. His reflections on the progress of the novel and on his own life―which is strikingly similar to the life of his novel's protagonist―expose the raw suture of fiction and reality.” (Amazon)
The Shadow of What We Were by Luis Sepulveda
“Sepulveda packs more than three decades of Chilean history into this lean and darkly humorous novel. Three aging revolutionaries-Cacho Salinas, Lolo Garmendia, and Lucho Arancibia-reunite to pull off one final, spectacular heist, gathering in a hideout to await the arrival of the Shadow, a legendary Robin Hood-type anarchist. As the comrades with their graying beards, thinning hair, and chubby physiques wait, they revisit the past and ruminate on losses: after Pinochet's coup, Cacho and Lolo fled to Europe, while Lucho, whose brothers were murdered by the regime, stayed and endured torture that has left him brain damaged. Meanwhile, and unbeknownst to the trio, the Shadow lies dead on the sidewalk, struck down by a freak accident. Although the narrator frequently runs away with the story, trailing off into history lessons, Sepulveda maintains a high level of suspense as the police investigate the Shadow's death, and Cacho, Lolo, and Lucho decide whether to go through with their plan, turning their collective sorrows into a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit. (Feb.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved." (Amazon)
Tengo Miedo Torero by Pedro Lemebel
“This is a love story in Santiago de Chile in 86, the year of the Pinochet attack. A boy from the Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front, who is going to participate in the action, lives a sentimental relationship with a gay man who supports him, without knowing-knowing it, in his political plans. But they fail and their relationship ends as well. I am afraid of a bullfighter is the verse of a song that Sara Montiel used to perform. His words suggest, beyond theatricality and melancholy, the recondite interiority of a country that, as defined by the author, sounds very little, it sounds like credit, it does not sound the impossible.” (Amazon)
Frozen in Time: Murder at the Bottom of the World by Theodore Jerome Cohen
“The trail from a major theft at the Banco Central de Chile in Talcahuano following the Great Chilean Earthquake of May 22, 1960 leads to Base Bernardo O'Higgins, a wind- and snow-swept Chilean Army outpost on the North Antarctic Peninsula. When Chilean Army 1SGT Leonardo Rodríguez fails to return from a seal hunt in the waters around the base, two Chilean Navy non-commissioned officers, CWO Raul Lucero and CPO Eduardo Osorio, become LCDR Cristian Barbudo's prime theft and murder suspects. Fearing he will die, Barbudo reveals the identity of his two suspects to visiting scientist Ted Stone, thereby placing Stone's life in jeopardy. But who can Stone trust with this information, if it comes to that, to see justice done? This story is a work of fiction based on real events that took place between 1958 and 1965. It is a tale of greed, betrayal, and murder-one in which the reader is given a window into the frozen world at the bottom of the Earth that few people ever will read about, much less experience. Among other things, it explores why, though seemingly unfair, bad things happen to good people; how the battle between good and evil can change forever even the most innocent person; and most of all, the role deception plays in Nature, Man, and Life.” (Amazon)

Photoshoot of the Week: January 6th-12th 2020 - Suzuki GSX-R600 & Lucy
Every year, people ring in the New Year with goals to live life differently on some level. However, a few short weeks later, many of these very same well-wishers end up discouraged and filled with shame and remorse over their failed attempts to make their resolutions come to pass. Who knows? This may be the second, third, fourth, or 15th year someone has tried to “kick the habit.” After so many misguided attempts, why would they even want to try again? So, if you want to start a new life, take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. Anyway the first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want! I made my decision years ago: learning to ride a motorcycle and becoming a biker. Even with a bit of effort (ok, it was way more difficult than what I expected and it took quite a long time) but I did it, and then I felt better and my strength came back: eventually I joined the biker community. There’s a good chance that if someone has to ask us why we ride a motorcycle, they’ll never really understand. For most of us, we ride because we can’t not ride. It's something difficult to be explained, being a biker is something that you feel. Perhaps images are worth more than every word: take a look at German amazing rider and terrific socialite Lucy and her Suzuki GSX-R600. She has that feeling of pure joy after a long ride, something every motorcyclist can relate to. The reason we feel so happy is pretty simple; every twist of the wrist releases adrenaline and that improves our mood and increases pleasure. This is similar to mindfulness meditation: body position, speed, road position - on a motorcycle you're constantly analyzing and adjusting depending on the situation. This ties us into the present moment, and means our minds have no room for worries about money, jobs or any other day-to-day problems. So, if you don't have a bike, take one ... and if you can't afford it just relax and watch Lucy, she is actually kind of awesome!! *** *** Löwensteiner Platte Suzuki GSX-R600 continues the Gixxer family legacy into the 2020 model year with the GSX-R600 powered by a 599 cc engine and includes all the sporty handling that is expected in this prestigious line. The Gixxer 600 carries a nose-down/tail-high stance that kind of makes it look like it's going fast even when standing still and leaves it with an eager air that seems to almost beg for some abuse. Since 1985, the GSX-R has been continuously refined to deliver new levels of performance and agility. This legacy of innovation continues with over 1 million legends made. The supersport class may not have the prestige it used to have but these are still a great option for riders looking to start participating in trackdays or riders looking for a budget-friendly weekend ride. No matter what you are looking for, the 600 engine is manageable enough for new riders and fun enough for experienced riders alike. The 600 seems to have received the last-minute graphics concepts because both the Pearl Glacier White and Glass Sparkle Black are a little bland. Race-ready, iconic GSX-R styling provides sharp looks and a slippery shape with deep, rich paint. Riders can choose between Glass Sparkle Black or Pearl Glacier White colors, each with monochromatic graphics and color-matched cast aluminum wheels. The GSX-R600’s compact, fuel-injected, 599cc, four-cylinder engine delivers a rush of power from idle to redline. Located between the frame’s spars, the engine’s top end is canted forward to improve cylinder head charging for increased power output. The Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) lets the rider adjust the engine’s power delivery to suit the riding conditions. The twin-spar aluminum frame effectively connects the steering head with the swingarm pivot portion of the chassis in a way that balances light weight and strength. The engine is suspended below the frame to keep mass low and the wheelbase short to promote nimble handling. A compact 599cc, four-cylinder engine with a race-proven over-square bore/stroke ratio produces remarkably strong high rpm power delivery. The energy-efficient engine employs forged pistons, shot-peened connecting rods, chrome-nitride-coated upper compression and oil control rings, and pentagonal ventilation holes to reduce frictional and mechanical losses. Camshafts with aggressive valve-lift profiles were developed using proven MotoGP racing engine technology – the first time this method has been applied to a production Suzuki. Lightweight titanium alloy valves are controlled by single-coil valve springs to reduce valve train mass, reducing mechanical losses at high rpm. Lightweight and durable forged pistons were designed using the same Finite Element Method (FEM) and fatigue analysis technology used for MotoGP racing engines. Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) fuel injection uses eight fine-spray eight-hole injectors for improved fuel atomization, which contributes to more complete combustion. An Engine Control Module (ECM) provides state-of-the-art engine management and has enhanced settings to suit the intake and exhaust systems, resulting in better fuel economy and linear throttle response. Advanced, MotoGP-developed transistorized ignition control programming helps maintain more precise spark timing across the range of engine speed and temperature. Lightweight and compact twin-spar aluminum alloy frame is constructed of five cast sections to produce a balance of light weight and strength. The frame is mated with a cast aluminum swingarm and multi-piece rear sub-frame that’s ready for racetrack use. Race-developed, lightweight Showa Big Piston Front Fork (BPF) delivers superb feedback and consistent performance. Single Showa rear shock absorber features externally adjustable rebound and compression damping, along with adjustable ride height. Electronically controlled steering damper provides lighter steering at slower speeds and more damping force at racetrack and highway speeds. Front brakes with fully floating 310mm discs are grasped by radial-mount, four-piston Brembo Monobloc calipers. Three-spoke cast aluminum alloy wheels are shod with lightweight, high-grip front and rear tires for sharp handling. Three-way adjustable foot pegs, adjustable shift lever and short fuel tank help compose a comfortable riding position that permits the rider movement required for performance riding. Summing it up: Suzuki GSX-R600 is a class-leading sportbike worthy of its race-winning GSX-R heritage. Whether you’re carving through your favorite canyon or dominating the racetrack, it offers unparalleled performance. A compact, powerful, four-cylinder engine demonstrates the advanced race-proven technology of the GSX-R line when you hit the throttle and push it to redline, while supremely refined suspension systems front and rear help provide precise, responsive handling. #bikergirl #fastbikes #RidinGirlsBlog #racing #suzukigsxr600 #gsxr600 #gsxr #gixxerkidz #Suzuki #gsxr1000 #hjchelmets #biker #bikelife #bikersofinstagram #bikerfamily #bikergirl #motorrad #girlsonbikes #HJC #sportbike #sexybiker #Suzuki #GSX #gsxR #motard #moto #suzukigirl #bikerchick #bikerlady #motorbike #speed #roadracing #ridingsexy #girlswhoride #riderich #girlsonbikes #gsxr #suzukigsxr #motogp #moto #helmetporn

Muscle Car Highlights From the Hot Rod & In-N-Out Burgers and Burnouts Anniversary Show
Seventy years ago, two icons were born in Southern California.
In 1948, Robert E. Petersen published the very first issue of Hot Rod magazine out of his apartment near Hollywood. Volume 1, Number 1 was 24 pages long and cost 25 cents. Feel like rolling the dice and investing in a yearlong subscription to the brand new magazine? That would set you back $3.
In October of that year, in Baldwin Park (about 25 miles east of Hollywood), Harry and Esther Snyder opened the first drive-through hamburger stand in California, a 10-foot-square structure aptly named In-N-Out Burger. A hamburger cost 25 cents, a cheeseburger 30, fries were 15 cents, and a soda cost a dime.
These two septuagenarians, still very much alive and kicking, celebrated their common birthdays in November at an event called Burgers and Burnouts. Held at the Auto Club Dragway in Pomona  (itself an icon of SoCal car culture), the day included a massive car show, drag racing, live music, and a display of significant and historic cars that had appeared on the covers and pages of Hot Rod.
Wouldn’t you know it? B and B was held on the same weekend as the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. There was no way I was going to miss the 10th annual MCACN show. At the same time, as Hot Rod’s mid-1990s editor, I wanted to be a part of that celebration, too. The solution? Do both events, and enlist help from our deep bench of MCR contributors to flesh out the coverage.
MCACN MCACN outdid itself. We have run out of fresh superlatives to describe this event, and Bob Ashton and his MCACN crew raised the bar even higher for the show’s 10th birthday. By burning the midnight oil like it was nitromethane, Arvid Svendsen wrote up MCACN’s very special Scat Pack and Rapid Transit System display for this Mopar-themed issue scant hours after the show closed. Next month Arvid will bring you his report on the show overall. Matt Avery’s coverage of the Vintage Certification area (for original, unrestored cars) will appear in the April issue, followed by Geoff Stunkard’s story about the Barn Finds and Hidden Gems display in May.
We also used the target-rich environment of MCACN as subject matter for a new series of muscle car–related video stories by Kendra Sommer, who you may already know for her Cruisin’ With Kendra web videos. Our plan is to post a video on “Muscle Monday” every other week at the MCR webpage on hotrod.com.
Burgers and Burnouts After filing a MCACN preview story for the website before the show even officially opened, I left snowy Chicago for a sunny Saturday in Pomona. A little bleary, I was grateful that MCR and Hot Rod Deluxe contributor Stephan Szantai was there to lend a big hand with the event coverage. I talked to a few people, lined up some future features, enjoyed a fresh In-N-Out Double Double, and stayed coherent long enough to join several other past and present Hot Rod staffers on stage for an informal discussion about the magazine’s history, led by former Hot Rod editor and now Roadkill TV star David Freiburger. (How popular is Roadkill? David said he signed autographs for four hours before someone pulled the plug and let the guy take a break. And I knew him when . . .)
Here are a few of Stephan’s and my photos from B and B to give you a taste of the event. More coverage is online, and I’m sure Hot Rod will run its own magazine stories, too.

[Exclusive Interview] SUMMER OF ’84 Directors Talk Serial Killers and Sundance
I feel a certain pride when talking about directors from Quebec; Xavier Dolan and Denis Villeneuve are a few names that come to mind, but recently my attention has shifted to RKSS (RoadKill SuperStar). The trio, consisting of Anouk Whissel, François Simard and Yoann-Karl Whissel, started off making low-budget horror shorts with their friends, but later gained international recognition for their 2015 feature-length debut Turbo Kid.
Last week, RKSS premiered their second feature Summer of ‘84 at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Produced by Gunpowder & Sky, Summer of ‘84 is a dark thriller set in an American suburb. Although it’s not fantastical like Turbo Kid, the movie still carries the signature style of RKSS that I’ve come to love. I got a chance to speak to two thirds of RKSS before their final screening at Sundance. Being a huge fan of Turbo Kid, I tried to set aside all my nerd excitement and keep my cool over the phone.
youtube
Chris Aitkens for Nightmare on Film Street: What’s it like returning to the Sundance Film Festival now that you’re more established as directors? Do you feel like rockstars?
Anouk Whissel: Not really, but we feel less like impostors, because we felt like we were out of place the first time, that we wouldn’t belong here.
François Simard: The first time we were a bit more shy. My English wasn’t that great. But we did it! This year, we felt more pressure, mainly because we’re returning with a very different movie than Turbo Kid. We were very nervous with the expectations from people who had loved Turbo Kid. This movie is very grounded, it’s the most serious movie we done so far, so we didn’t know how people would react to it.
NOFS: You had the world premiere on January 22nd, what are some of the things you’ve been hearing back from audience members and critics?
FS: The premiere has been insane, it really surpassed my expectations. So we’re very happy. The fans seem to love it. And we knew that some would love it, some would hate it, but nobody is indifferent. We’re happy about that. We were surprised by some of the critics who were really mean, but we don’t do this for them, we do this for the fans, because we’re fans too.
AW: And we got some nice critics as well, but the crowd is really showing us a lot of love, and they’re staying for the Q&As and we got some super cool questions and they’re hanging out with us after, they really love it, so we’re really thankful.
FS: It was the same with Turbo Kid, you can’t please everyone. It’s part of the game. But so far, we’re so grateful to be here and it’s been a blast. Every screening has been sold out and I think the one tonight (the last screening) is sold out too.
NOFS: From what I read, you got the script before this whole 80s nostalgia craze hit its peak with Stranger Things. How did you come across the script and how long ago was this?
AW: We came across the script in the summer of 2015, it was before we knew Stranger Things was happening. When they released the first poster, we were really bummed out. We thought “Oh no, they did it first!”
FS: And we were working on the project for one year at the time. But we saw that there was an audience for that kind of nostalgia and we got the greenlight soon after, very easily.
AW: Yeah, the popularity of Stranger Things really helped with launching our project. I was refusing to watch it for some time because I was so afraid that they would be too much alike. When I actually watched it, I was surprised because it’s really different. I was happy, I could relax and enjoy it.
FS: The only thing we changed was the reference to Dungeons & Dragons. But the kids are older, they drink, they swear, they only talk about sex, like we did in the 80s. It’s an indie thriller, there’s no supernatural stuff. It’s grounded in reality, which for us, makes it more scary. The tone is very different, so it’s its own entity. We’ve gotten good feedback from fans of Stranger Things, they wanted to see something different and they were grateful for that.
NOFS: I’m curious; did you grow up in the suburbs?
AW: Yeah, we did, actually. That’s why we felt so compelled by the script, because we recognized our friends and we recognized our games. We really felt attached to them because these kids are us.
FS: The only difference was that we were talking French, but it’s pretty much the same suburb, the same life. I would add that the reason this story is set in the 80s, it’s not because it’s trendy, we’re not trying to capitalize on the success of IT or Stranger Things, it’s because in the 80s in the suburbs, feelings of safety started to fade away. There were more abductions.
AW: Yeah, they were talking more about it in the news, so people started being paranoid and locking their doors. In the mid-80s, that shift started to happen. That theme is at the core of the story, that’s why it’s set in the 80s.
NOFS: Being in the suburbs, did your imagination ever run wild because there’s nothing better to do there?
FS: Yeah, we had no internet, no Facebook or social media. We had to hang out outside.
AW: I think everyone has had that weird neighbor who nobody really knows, who usually doesn’t like kids.
FS: Yeah, your dog would bring you a bone and you would think “Oh my god! There’s a body buried somewhere.” And when we read the ending (we won’t spoil it), that’s why we jumped into the project. And we didn’t plan for our second feature to be set in the 80s. It’s really because it’s so hard to have a movie financed so you need to be working on different projects. Turbo Kid 2 is one of them. But we didn’t want to do a sequel right after the first, because then we would have to do the third and the fourth, and we didn’t want to be only known as the Turbo Kid guys. We’re happy to have something different and to explore. That being said, Turbo Kid is our baby and we can’t wait to work on the sequel.
NOFS: Going back to Summer of ‘84, I noticed a lot of 80s references like the punk bands and the kids talking about Gremlins. Did you have to do research to make sure it was as historically accurate as possible or were the references all from memory?
AW: I think at first, it was from memory, but we double-checked everything to make sure there weren’t any references to bands or anything that came after the summer of ‘84.
FS: Even for the cars, we had to check if the cars were made before ‘84. So everything is legit.
NOFS: I really liked the mood of the movie, it’s very haunting and uncertain, you never know what’s going to happen. I feel the mood comes across very well thanks to the soundtrack provided by Le Matos (who also did the soundtrack for Turbo Kid). What’s your relationship with Le Matos?
AW: JP Bernier is one of the members of Le Matos, and he’s one of our best friends and our director of photography as well. We started working with him in 2007, I think. It was a while back, and at that time, he didn’t have his band. He created that band with Jean-Nicholas Leupi later on, and from that moment, they started to score our short films as well. We have a very strong relationship with him. It’s natural for us to bring them on board, and because JP is involved in the early process as a DP, I think the music is so connected to the image.
FS: He’s actually the fourth member of the band (RKSS). We’re so happy to have him. When we were younger, in the early 2000s, we started making shorts and we didn’t know anything about the technical side. We met JP because of Despised Icon (the death metal band from Montreal) and he made music videos for them and I was a huge fan. He saw our shorts and he said the only thing we need is a good DP. Since then, he’s been with us and he’s a good friend and we’ll try to bring him on board for every project.
Photo by David Sidaway of the Montreal Gazette. Notice the NAILS and Full of Hell tuques
NOFS: I noticed the Full of Hell patch on François’ hat and I think I saw Anouk wearing a NAILS hat in another picture. Would you ever consider making a movie with a grind or extreme metal soundtrack?
FS: I would love to, but I don’t know if there’s money for that because extreme music is not for everybody.
AW: If we could find a project that fits, it would be crazy, for sure.
FS: We did a short called Le Bagman back in 2004, and all my favorite bands were in that movie. It’s very DIY, though.
NOFS: When it comes to the three of you acting as directors, have you figured out a system where each person has a separate job, where nobody is stepping on each other’s toes? How do you organize working with three directors?
AW: When we write, we write together and we argue a lot and we fight, but nobody sees it. That’s the only time we fight, behind closed doors. When we’re with our team, we don’t want chaos. We’re very strict with our preparation, we have our storyboards and we show up overprepared. So when we’re on set, we can split. Yoann-Karl is with this actors.
FS: He’s the one with the loudest mouth, so it’s a shame he’s not here.
AW: François edited all our short films. He sticks to the storyboard and he’s with JP the DP, just to make sure we’re not missing any shots for the edit. I’m the head of departments and the overseeing eye to make sure everything is following our vision and that we’re on the right track.
FS: On set, if somebody has a question and they don’t know who to ask, or if there’s a problem, we can take care of it, that’s why we split. Rich Sommer (who plays Officer Wayne Mackey) did test us, just to see if we have the same vision and the same answers. He asked the same question to each of us, without us knowing, but we gave him the same answer.
NOFS: As directors from Quebec, do you ever feel there’s a language barrier when you’re talking to the cast?
AW: Not really. I think it’s been going very well. I don’t think we’ve ever had problems getting people to understand us, even if we don’t have the best words every time, it’s never been a problem.
FS: But like I said, at first I was the one struggling with my English. We spent three weeks in New Zealand for the post-production of Turbo Kid and that really helped. Now I can express myself. But we always have storyboards, so at least we can explain what we want very easily to the whole crew, it’s the best way to go.
NOFS: I know you don’t want to be known as the Turbo Kid guys, but are there any details you can tell me about the next Turbo Kid movie?
FS: It’s at the writing stage right now. We want to work on it more to be sure that it’s the best script ever. I think we owe this to the fans, some have tons of tattoos and fan art and cosplay, so we need to take our time.
AW: What we can say is that it’s going to be a sequel, so we’re going to follow The Kid as he travels through the Wasteland after what happened with Apple.
FS: He wants to know what’s on the other side of the Wasteland and that’s where the story takes place. Like I said, we’ll do it once the script is good and when we have a decent budget to be able to take our time with it. Last time, every day we had to cut and we had to sacrifice. It’s a good thing to learn, but we had to cut on the gore, on the action, on the set pieces and the stunts, and we preserved the love story. I know for the sequel, it needs to be bigger, so we’ll need a much bigger budget.
Summer of ’84 had its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Keep your eyes peeled for future film festival announcements.

Eleven Was Going to Die in Stranger Things, But She's Not Alone—These Characters Also Escaped the Grim Reaper
New Post has been published on http://gossip.network/eleven-was-going-to-die-in-stranger-things-but-shes-not-alone-these-characters-also-escaped-the-grim-reaper/
Eleven Was Going to Die in Stranger Things, But She's Not Alone—These Characters Also Escaped the Grim Reaper
Stranger Things without Eleven? It almost happened.
During a chat with at Chapman University, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed Millie Bobby Brown‘s breakout character was supposed to die. Oh yeah, Stranger Things was supposed to be a limited series too.
“Maybe I shouldn’t say this because I like to pretend that it was all planned out, but it was originally pitched as a limited series,” Ross Duffer said, according to CinemaBlend. “So it was like, Eleven was gonna sacrifice herself and save the world and then that was gonna be it, because there was a moment where limited series were a big deal.”
Obviously that did not happen. Eleven survived, Stranger Things returned for a second season and there are already plans for as many as five seasons about the paranormal happenings in Hawkins, Indiana.
Eleven isn’t the only character to outlast the original expiration date creators had in mind—read on below to find out other TV characters who were supposed to die!
CW
Klaus, The Vampire Diaries
Sure, he landed his own spinoff, but Joseph Morgan‘s The Vampire Diaries character was supposed to die before heading off to The Originals. “I will tell you this—and I haven’t said this before: Our intention was to kill Klaus at the end of season three,” Julie Plec said. “We created the character last year… and our intention was, that after a long, arduous year of trying to vanquish and defeat the villain, our heroes would prevail and he would be no more. But when you have actors [like Joseph Morgan] who are that good, making such a distinct mark in the roles that they are playing, you have to let your storytelling evolve and wrap around that a little bit. We collectively decided around the middle of season three that we weren’t done with Klaus—or Joseph.”
AMC
Jesse Pinkman, Breaking Bad
Yes, there was almost Breaking Bad without Aaron Paul‘s Jesse Pinkman and his relationship with Bryan Cranston‘s Walter White. Crazy, we know. Series creator Vince Gilligan intended for Jesse to die in season one, with his death affecting Walter White in profound ways.
“My intention was that at the end of season one, Jesse would die horribly, which would make Walt feel really guilty and force him to question his criminality,” Gilligan said. “But it became clear to me that Aaron Paul was an absolute asset to the show. I’d no more kill him off now than cut off one of my pinkies.”
ABC/Mario Perez
Jack Shephard, Lost
Before Matthew Fox landed the role on ABC’s acclaimed drama, producers were looking at a big name, like Michael Keaton. The idea was to have Keaton as Jack, but kill the character off in the first episode.
“I said, ‘I’ll seriously consider it, send me the script,'” Keaton said. “[J.J. Abrams] said, ‘No, we’re keeping the guy alive,’ and I said, ‘Oh, ok, well I can’t do that.'”
Jack lived and Fox landed the role.

Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Believe it or not, Spuffy wasn’t always endgame. Joss Whedon had originally intended James Marsters‘ character to just be another villain for the heroes of Buffy to defeat—key word being defeat.
“It was not supposed to be romantic, but the audience was responding that way and Joss was freaking out,” Marsters said. “He backed me up against a wall one day and said, ‘I don’t care how popular you are, you are dead.'”
Didier Baverel/SHOWTIME
Nicholas Brody, Homeland
Damian Lewis‘ character was supposed to kick the bucket at the end of season one of Showtime’s hit series when he strapped himself with a suicide vest. That didn’t happen, he went on to survive until season three.
“Ultimately, we felt that there’s just more to tell between Brody and Carrie,” executive producer Alex Gansa told TVGuide.com. “So, we decided to keep him alive. Also, Showtime really wanted Damian Lewis around for another year.”
NBC
Carol Hathaway, ER
The first episode of ER featured Julianna Margulies‘ character attempting suicide with an overdose of pills and that was supposed to be it…until the character struck a chord with test audiences. The rest? TV history.
“I had no idea I was coming back,” Margulies said. “I was hired as a guest star, just for the pilot.”
FX
Boyd Crowder, Justified
Chalk this up to another case of test audiences loving a character. Walton Goggins‘ Justified character was supposed to die in the pilot after getting shot, but audiences loved Boyd so much he eventually became a main character.
Frank Ockenfels/AMC
Harry Crane, Mad Men
Rich Sommer‘s Mad Men character wasn’t supposed to be long for the world in AMC’s period drama. He was supposed to meet his maker at the end of season one by jumping off the building. That didn’t happen, obviously.
Netflix
Eleven, Stranger Things
If you thought Stranger Things season one felt like a complete story, you would be right. The Duffer brothers envisioned a limited series, one that ended with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) making the ultimate sacrifice to save the day. She lived and Stranger Things continued, with Eleven becoming a new pop culture icon.
Stranger Things season two is now streaming on Netflix.

User Review
Author:
Rating: 6/10 Few things are as comfortable as a Rob Reiner film. The director who is still commonly referred to lovingly as Meathead by fans of the iconic All in the Family television series has been directing films since the early 80's and his films are consistently entertaining inoffensive fair marketed to mass audiences. The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, The American President and The Bucket List are just a sampling of the director's filmography that audiences will be familiar.
Those that watch Rob Reiner on the talk show circuit would know that the outside of being an actor and director, he is very political activist who uses his celebrity status to bring attention to equal rights and to social issues such as violence and tobacco use.
So it is a bit of surprise that Rob Reiner has never made a film that might leverage his strong activist lifestyle. Until now, that is.
LBJ is Rob Reiner's film about the 36th President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson, who was thrust from the Vice-President's chair to the Oval Office desk after the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy on that fateful November day in 1963.
Woody Harrelson plays LBJ and the film takes us backwards and forwards in time from LBJ's unsuccessful run for the Democratic Party nomination through JFK's assassination and ultimately through the President's fight for an Equal Rights Bill.
The heart of the film comes from LBJ's battle within his own party. Robert Kennedy (Michael Stahl-David) is hardly a fan of the foul-mouthed Texan who was hand-picked by brother John for the Vice-President position. The two will battle wills and disagree on almost all political talking points throughout their tenures. Also providing resistance to LBJ's forward thinking is Senator Richard Russell (Richard Jenkins) from the state of Georgia. Russell is portrayed as a racist that does not believe that individuals of color deserve the same rights and freedoms as all other Americans. LBJ does his best to try and win the trust of Russell and LBJ walks the thin line of keeping Russell in the fold before he abandons his friendship with the Senator in his attempt to fulfill the inroads JFK had made in his equal rights efforts prior to his assassination.
Harrelson is barely recognizable as the title character. The make-up is thick to ensure he resembles the former President. At times, the make-up is brilliant. The big ears and receding hairline of LBJ is captured expertly. But at other times – particularly in close-ups – the make-up looks like Harrelson was an extra in Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy film.
LBJ is obviously the focus, but there is ample time given to JFK. And the assassination in Texas is captured with valuable attention to detail. The assassination is a key point in the life of LBJ and Rob Reiner takes the time to film it correctly (it was filmed in Texas exactly where the shooting took place). Jeffrey Donovan (televisions Burn Notice) plays Kennedy and brings subtle touch to the role not attempting to overdo the Boston drawl.
As with all other Reiner films, LBJ plays it safe. Audiences may learn a few things about the complicated man along the way. His foul mouth, how he would have meetings while sitting on the toilet, and his insecurity always believing that he was not loved by either his inner circle or his country (he did win re-election by the widest margin in American history). To my embarrassment, I didn't know that LBJ was in a procession car with JFK the day he was killed. But LBJ is no Lincoln. Where the Spielberg film was brilliantly written and a character study of both a political family and the process to which they battled, LBJ skims the surface like a rock skipping along calmer waters. Gritty, LBJ is not.
But safe entertainment can still be good entertainment and Reiner is surely a master at that craft. There is plenty of humor in the film to keep the characters interesting and keeping the story non-linear works to valued effect. LBJ will not be considered Rob Reiner's best work, but it is exactly what you can come to expect from the director. And slipping into a comfortable shoe can be so so comfortable.
