The Avengers: Earth Mightiest Heroes & X-Men Evolution series watch
The Man in the Ant Hill written by Christopher Yost
This episode begins somewhere in the African jungle where scientist Hank Pym is studying a rare piece of vibranium that was discovered by SHIELD. Ulysses Klaw invades Pym's lab in attempts to steal the sample but is quickly defeated by Hank utilizing his Ant-Man technology.
Sometime later in New York Janet van Dyne expresses disappointment that Hank's only interested in his research and not utilizing his abilities for anything else. A supervillain named Whirlwind attacks New York City destroying after attempted robbery. Janet as The Wasp, engages in a battle with Whirlwind. During the fight, Wasp leads Whirlwind into Ant-Man's swarm of insects, stopping him from causing more damage.
After Whirlwind's capture, Fury thanks the Wasp and Ant-Man and offers them a recruitment pitch. However, Hank and Nick get into an argument about the prison that Hank created. Hank had designed the Big House, a prison that shrinks down criminals and places them in a miniature prison, for SHIELD as a way of rehabilitating criminals, not punishing them. Fury argues that Pym's views are too idealistic. SHIELD is fighting on the front lines to protect people from supervillains. Fury then asks if they even bothered to ask what Whirlwind had stolen, which was a sonic disruptor for Klaw.
King T'Chaka faces a challenge for the throne of Wakanda from the Man-Ape. Prince T'Challa tries to convince his father not to fight, but T'Chaka is a traditionalist and refuses to back down. During the battle, the Man-Ape fights unfairly and uses an invisible sonic weapon to defeat T'Chaka, killing him and claiming the Wakanda throne. In response, Prince T'Challa flees Wakanda, takes on the persona of the Black Panther, and leaves his homeland. Later on, the Man-Ape is revealed to have teamed up with Klaw, promising to give him access to the valuable Vibranium.
So a little trivia is that these first five episodes Were originally released as 20 micro episodes before being edited together. This is the episode where that is the most obvious. It's not a critique but this episode feels very much divided into segments. The Black Panther part was just kinda place at the end only tangtially related because of the vibranium.
As for characterization I think this is the strongest. Probably because Janet and Hank are together, they have someone to bounce off of in a strong way as heroes. Hank is really so sweet in this with his enthusiasm about science and thinking everyone must love it. Janet also comes of strong with her desire to be part of the action.
T'Challa sadly get a little a lost in the background as his interduction is more focused on the fight between T'Chaka and Man-Ape. Also people die on this show pretty violently. They don't exactly show it fully onscreen, but T'Challa gets beaten to death. Even the last episode Bucky crushed a man to death.
I really love how the animation of this show incorporates elements of Jack Kirby's art it' looks really cool. Also this show has such a strong used of shadows and colors that I feel is absent in a lot of modern action cartoons.
Speed & Spike Written By Bob Forward, Bob Forward & Rick Ungar
Storm watched her nephew Evan play basketball at his high school where Pietro Maximoff is also a player. Even scored the winning basket, but spikes grew out of his arms as he fell. Storm and Pietro noticed and later, Storm invited Evan to join Xavier's Institute. Evan asked her to wait until the next morning to talk to his parents. Xavier contacts Storm about Jean Grey and Scott Summers joining them. Cerebro detects a new mutant at a ball game. Evan's locker is broken into again and Pietro offers him money to catch the thief. Later, Jean, Scott, and Storm visit Evan's home but he behaves rudely and leaves. At school, Pietro wrecks the lockers and frames Evan.
Everyone meets at the jail to pick up Evan. Scott proposes Evan's release in exchange for joining the school. Evan agrees. The X-Men talk about his desire for revenge. Magneto and Mystique plan to recruit Quicksilver by organizing a basketball game between Bayville and Evan's former school. Evan trains with X-Men in the Danger Room. The basketball game is suddenly scheduled, so Kitty calls Evan. Evan confronts Pietro, but Jean and Scott arrive to help. Quicksilver wrecks Main Street. X-Men stop him. Evan is cleared, Magneto frees Pietro. Quicksilver agrees to join Magneto. At the mansion, the X-Men are gathered together. Xavier assures Evan that he is a welcome addition, and Storm agrees.
So, Pietro but no Wanda. She won't be introduced until the next season. I don't know why they did that if they had any specific plans.
This is the episode is another to touch on the self-fear that mutants might have about themselves as Spyke starts off with a reluctance to join the Xavier Insitute and not wanting to tell his parents he has a mutant despite them knowing it was possibly and clearly having no problem with Storm. I wish it could have delved a little deeper into this but it ends up being drop the first after the first act to focus on Spyke and Pietro rivalry.
This was another fine episode. The action scenes I feel were a little choppy but not bad. It's just compare to EMH they do come off a little weak in comparison.
Evan Daniels/Spyke was a character specifically created for the series. But he never really taken of in the mainstream comics.

#3yrsago Pirate Utopia: Bruce Sterling's novella of Dieselpunk, weird politics, and fascism
Between 1920 and 1924, the Free State of Fiume was a real-world "pirate utopia," an ungoverned place of blazing futurism, military triumphalism, transgression, sex, art, dada, and high weirdness. In Bruce Sterling's equally blazing dieselpunk novella Pirate Utopia, the author turns the same wry and gimlet eye that found the keen edges for steampunk's seminal The Difference Engine to the strange business of futurism.
Though the real-world Fiume was snuffed out without much ceremony in '24, in Sterling's fantasy, it continues to flourish, led by an improbable collection of both real and imaginary persons known by epithets: The Pirate Engineer, The Ace of Hearts, the Prophet, the Art Witch. One of the delights of this novel is the gradual revelation as to which of these are actual historical personages (Wikipedia is your friend here), and how many of the wild improbables of the story are based on historical fact.
But beyond the alt.history game of who's that, and how's that -- fun as this is to play with everyone from Hitler to HP Lovecraft to Robert E Howard to Harry Houdini -- the exciting thing about "Pirate Utopia" is how exciting it makes weird politics, and how terrible. We're living in a moment where politics have gone decidedly nonlinear, and there are wild swings that are smashing out the from every angle, then knocking out its frame and the wall it stood in for good measure. In an era in which both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump can get a crack at the Oval Office, while a self-described dictator takes office in the Philippines and the UK falls under the leadership of a charmless, second-rate Thatcher, weird politics are all the rage and we can use any help we can get in understanding them.
Sterling's Pirate Utopia captures both the excitement and the shabbiness of Futurism and fascism, the sense of trembling anticipation and the terror of merciless technocratic rule where corruption is considered efficient and meritocratic. For all that this is a very cerebral story -- much of the prose is distant and precise, like a Futurist's oiled machine stamping out words -- Sterling masterfully winds in all manner of blood and love and sorrow into the story, not to mention the odd belly-laugh.
This novella is a beautiful object, with the most amazing super-modernist black and white interior illustrations and a cover that beggars belief. In addition to Sterling's novella, the covers contain a typically grumpy and thoughtful introduction from Warren Ellis, an postscript by gonzo sf writer Chris Brown, an interview between Rick Klaw and Sterling, and a note by Sterling's Italian editor. All this metadata fleshes out the tale in a most satisfying way, giving it the context it deserves, tracing the connections between sf, Futurism, war, fascism, and the weird times we find ourselves living in.

The week, the Dragon Con American Sci-Fi Classics Track is celebrating a quarter century of The Fifth Element. It is kind of hard to believe that it’s been that long since this oddball and magnificent science fiction film debuted.

HAPPINESS
1917
Happiness is a one-act play by J. Hartley Manners. The original production was produced by Oliver Morosco and starred Laurette Taylor, Manners’ wife. It opened at Broadway’s Cort Theatre on March 6, 1914, and played six select matinee performances. It was performed on a bill with The Day of the Dupes, and Just As Well, also by Manners and starring Taylor. The same company performed Peg O’ My Heart in the evenings. Needless to say, the plays were written to showcase Taylor’s talents and break up her then year-long run as Peg. The matinees were performed for charity.
Some newspapers reported that there would be four one-acts on the bill, but only three were ever produced.
Laurette Taylor (1883–1946), born as Loretta Helen Cooney, was an American stage and silent film star considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, American stage actresses of the 20th century. Her final triumph was as the original Amanda Wingfield in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie in 1945. Her work would influence an entire generation of actors. In preparing interviews for what became Broadway: The Golden Age, documentarian Rick McKay kept asking each person "Who influenced you the most" and time and time again, Laurette Taylor's name was mentioned. McKay ended up devoting an entire section of the film to Taylor.
John Hartley Manners (1870–1928) was a London-born playwright of Irish extraction who was Taylor’s second husband. Manners' vehicle for Laurette Taylor is largely a facsimile of his 1912 play Peg o' My Heart (also starring Taylor), with the setting moved from rural British Isles to the urban New York City.
Reviews were mixed:
“It was in this play, or study, as it was called, that the young comedienne [Taylor] displayed that rare charm of personality, and complete mastery of her art that has endeared her to theater-goers and established her as one of the best actresses in light comedy that we have on the stage today. For half an hour Miss Taylor, as Shabby Jenny, a modiste's helper, with her delightful sniffle, quaint philosophy, pathos, spontaneous semblance of unconscious youth, and radiant countenance, held her audience enthralled. She was at her best, which is to say that no other actress, not even Maude Adams, could have done better. Such charm is as rare as radium and as valuable. It ls heart-warming and Its buoyancy is joyous to behold. As a play "Happiness" Is much too long, and could be cut in half. But there should be no mistake about what half to retain. It tells a story of an exotic blasé woman and man who have everything but happiness. The first of the study consists of a long conversation between the woman suffering from ennui and her father, and later a man of the same set. As a complete dramatization of boredom this picture is unique, but the playwright did not stop there. He insisted on expressing his own ideas on art, literature, and theatre, and almost everything else at length and in a manner which caused the audience m become bored, as well as the characters.”
~ The Brooklyn Eagle, March 7, 1914
After a dubious success with Manners’ The Wooing of Eve at the end of 1917 on Broadway, the couple decided to revive Happiness in a proper production. This time, the play was fleshed out by Manners, expanding it from one act to three.
Before returning to the Rialto, the new Happiness played Nixon’s Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Upon leaving Atlantic City, the show made a brief stop in Wilmington, Delaware.
Happiness was short-lived in Wilmington, and for Klaw and Erlanger producer / manager George C. Tyler, who’s Manhattan home burned while he was watching Taylor perform. Tyler was the producer of three of Manners and Taylors’ Broadway hits, including the newly-expanded Happiness.
The play headed north to a New Year’s Eve Broadway opening. The same critic who carped that it was insubstantial, now found the new version padded:
“The criticism, we would make of ‘Happiness' in its present form is that it is diffuse. It gives one the impression of being scattered over too much ground. It would be comparatively easy, however, for Mr. Manners to gather up the too loose threads and weave them into a more compact garment, a garment that would wear better. All he needs are a blue pencil and two hours time.”
~ The Brooklyn Eagle, January 2, 1918
It ran a respectable 136 performances at the Criterion. In 1922, Taylor premiered Frannie Hurst’s Humoresque at the Apollo Atlantic City. But Taylor and Manners were not done with Happiness yet...
In 1924, Happiness was made into a silent comedy film directed by King Vidor, with Taylor recreating her role in one of her rare film appearances. It also featured a young Hedda Hopper, before she became one of Hollywood’s most famous gossip columnists. Taylor previously filmed her hit Peg O’ My Heart in 1922. Taylor would make just one more movie in 1924, One Night In Rome, which was a Broadway play written by Manners and starring Taylor in 1919.
Two years later (1926) Taylor found herself back in Atlantic City performing in a pre-Broadway try-out of Her Cardboard Lover opposite Leslie Howard as her love interest. Taylor was uncomfortable with the playwright and management. The producers decided to close the show in Baltimore, promising a major rewrite and a swift reopening. Assuming that her run-of-the-play contract was guaranteed, Laurette considered a six-week offer on the vaudeville circuit, but when Jane Cowl was rumored as her replacement, Laurette demanded that Her Cardboard Lover open in New York immediately, with herself in the lead. The producers refused, and she filed charges for breach of contract with Actors Equity, which found in her favor. She relinquished the role, and was awarded $4,000. The role eventually went to Jeanne Eagels. The play was filmed with Norma Shearer in 1942.
In March 1928, Taylor again returned to Nixon’s Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City with a pre-Broadway engagement of The Furies, by Zoe Atkins.

When Spider-Man Becomes Venom
https://ift.tt/39Uw3LD
If being Venom was like being in the Beatles, then Peter Parker would be Pete Best. His stretch of time in the late-80s wearing his living, black costume is a staple of his history. Before it turned Eddie Brock into a box office giant, the symbiote made for a badass variant look for Spider-Man that still holds up to this day. It’s the ultimate story of how we can lose ourselves to power, even if a loved one beat you over the head with lessons about responsibility.
Over the years, Spider-Man did rejoin with the symbiote a few times, usually in the name of heroism. In Venomized, a Venom symbiote from another reality bonded to him for a little while. At the end of Dan Slott’s lengthy Amazing Spider-Man run, Eddie Brock let Spidey borrow the symbiote so he could fight the Red Goblin (Norman Osborn as Carnage). These days, Parker and his former tights at least have an understanding.
This April, the team of Chip Zdarsky and Pasqual Ferry will be doing a four-issue take on Marvel’s What If? by giving us Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow. The idea? Spider-Man not only never gets rid of his hungry ooze pants, but he embraces his hungry ooze pants!
Yes, we see Peter Parker intentionally bond with what would have been known as the Venom symbiote and keep on keeping on with the crime-fighting. What happens when such a pure-hearted hero goes all-in on wearing clothes that constantly tell him to bite people’s faces off? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Then again, Peter holding onto the symbiote is an idea that’s been visited time and time again. Not only has it popped up in issues of What If?, but also in other forms of Marvel media.
WHAT IF THE ALIEN COSTUME HAD POSSESSED SPIDER-MAN?
In the fourth issue of What If?’s second volume, Danny Fingeroth and Mark Bagley jumped onto the then-recent introduction of Venom by doing an issue about what would have happened had Peter Parker taken too long to figure out what the deal was with his black costume. He couldn’t get in touch with the Fantastic Four, so he instead met up with Dr. Connors, which was a fruitless venture. By the time Reed Richards was able to investigate, the symbiote was already bonded to Spider-Man and wouldn’t be removed so easily.
Puppeting Parker’s body, the symbiote escaped captivity and hid in the city for several days. Spider-Man eventually came across a rampaging Hulk, which convinced the symbiote to leave Spider-Man for this upgrade of a host. Abandoned, Peter Parker appeared as an old man due to how much the creature sucked him dry. Using his final hours to design a sonic gun that could destroy the symbiote, Peter’s body finally gave out.
The symbiote eventually left Hulk for Thor. Interestingly enough, Banner was left cured of being the Hulk while the symbiote claimed what happened to Parker was a mistake. Whether it was telling the truth or not, it still took over Thor’s body and tried to hide out in Mount Rushmore. Luckily, Reed Richards had Black Bolt’s epic voice on speed dial and that took care of that.
Well, except for Black Cat getting the kill shot thanks to that aforementioned sonic gun.
SECRET WARS: 25 YEARS LATER
The final issue of the second volume of What If? took a look back at the original Secret Wars event and wondered what would happen had the heroes and villains been stuck on Battleworld for a generation. This Jay Faerber/Gregg Schigiel collaboration had Galactus and the Beyonder kill each other, meaning that all the survivors were stranded. Much had happened in those 25 years, but for the most part, the heroes and villains put their differences aside. Sure, there was something in there about Dr. Doom shacking up with the Enchantress, only for her to leave him for Thor and Doom killing her because of it, but otherwise you had the Wrecking Crew chilling out with Hawkeye and She-Hulk like old friends.
The stars of the one-shot were the offsprings, like the daughter of Captain America and Rogue or the son of Human Torch and Wasp. Spider-Man only had a couple moments, but they were incredibly interesting. He seemed colder to everyone and there was a curious debate over whether anyone had seen him eat anything.
During the climactic battle, Klaw blasted Spider-Man with some sonics. The symbiote pulled away to reveal nothing underneath but Peter Parker’s skeleton. This turned out to be far from a surprise to the heroes as Human Torch saved him and moved on without a second thought.
THE ANIMATED SERIES FINALE
Straying away from the Venom symbiote, there was a time in the comics where Ben Reilly – back when he took over being Spider-Man – was the host to the Carnage symbiote for a few hours. Nothing really happened with it, but he looked rad as hell and it made for a cool cover image.
The 90s Spider-Man cartoon ended the series by doing its own prototype version of Into the Spider-Verse. The final two-parter took place in “I Really, Really Hate Clones” and “Farewell, Spider-Man.”
In an alternate reality, a version of the Clone Saga storyline happened, only in this one, Peter was more of an asshole to Ben Reilly instead of treating him like a brother. When Peter found out that he was possibly the clone, he got extra pissed about it right around the time when the Carnage symbiote was nearby. He became Spider-Carnage and created a plan to destroy the multiverse.
A team of Spider-Men from different realities came together to stop him. After visiting a world where Spider-Man wore armor and was successful and happy in every way, the cartoon’s main Spider-Man realized that Uncle Ben was probably alive in that universe. That Uncle Ben confronted Spider-Carnage and got through to him. Although the man within wasn’t strong enough to expel the symbiote, he was able to sabotage his own multiverse-destroying plans via sacrificing his own life, all the while begging for forgiveness for all the horrors he committed.
WHAT IF? THE OTHER
Peter David and Khoi Pham did a one-shot where the Venom symbiote returned to Peter at the absolute worst time. The Other was as storyline where Spider-Man seemingly died, but survived in a cocooned form. After getting in touch with his inner spider, he was reborn with more primal abilities that unfortunately didn’t last too long. This alternate version had Spider-Man refuse the rebirth. Everyone already mourned him and he didn’t want to have that happen all over again. He remained in his cocoon, choosing to let nature take its course over time.

Venom: Riot and the Life Foundation Symbiotes Explained

At that time, Mac Gargan was Venom’s host and the symbiote could sense Spider-Man’s situation. Knowing Peter was ripe for the picking, the symbiote left Gargan and consumed the husk of Peter Parker. With the symbiote in full control, he was neither Spider-Man nor Venom. He was Poison.
Poison confronted Mary Jane and Aunt May, but realized they wanted nothing to do with him. Poison instead left and spawned a new symbiote child in order to bond with and reanimate the corpse of Gwen Stacy.
Yeah, lot of laughs going on in that story. Sheesh.
WHAT IF? AGE OF APOCALYPSE
Age of Apocalypse was already a bizarre alternate universe. Rick Remender and Dave Wilkins made it even more batshit insane by having Legion accidentally kill both Xavier and Magneto. In this reality, Nate Summers joined with a superhero resistance team to take out Apocalypse and there’s all sorts of crazy stuff going on.
At one point, the team came across a nest of Peter Parker clones engulfed in a giant black web of symbiote. A horrified Captain America (wielding Mjolnir) had them destroy all the brainless Spider-Man clones before moving on to the next big challenge.
WEB OF SHADOWS
Back in 2008, Activision decided to go all in on the whole symbiote thing by making a Spider-Man video game based entirely around a symbiote invasion and symbiote-possessed versions of different heroes and villains. A fight with Venom led to Spider-Man getting some of the goop onto himself, allowing him the option to become Symbiote Spider-Man. Venom’s symbiote started expanding and latching onto hundreds of other New Yorkers, overwhelming the city with chaos.
After teaming up with and/or fighting lots of Marvel characters, Spider-Man took on a kaiju version of Venom and convinced Eddie Brock to fights its influence. Depending on factors, Venom would either die from heroic sacrifice or Spider-Man’s hands.
There are various endings based both on how much time you’ve used the symbiote and how much of an overall dick you’ve been. Too much of the black costume could at best cause Mary Jane to break up with you. At worst, it could cause you to conquer New York as leader of the symbiotes.
VENOMVERSE
Since Marvel did the Spider-Verse comic event, Cullen Bunn and Iban Coello did a natural knockoff of sorts called Venomverse. While it had no real connection to the Spider-Man story, the gist was similar: various Venom hosts from the multiverse had to team up to face a threat that was hunting them down.
The mainstream Venom was the only Eddie Brock host involved as the rest of the crew included the likes of Mary Jane, Captain America, Dr. Strange, Rocket Raccoon, Deadpool, Gwenpool, and so on. There was also a Spider-Man in there and while they didn’t go too far into his background, he was the only one who seemed to recognize Eddie and harbored unexplained resentment.
The threat came in the form of Poisons. These tiny, white creatures on their own didn’t seem to be much of a threat, but when one would make physical contact with a symbiote and its host, it would engulf them and completely take over. The Poison, the symbiote, and the host would turn into some kind of white, armored creature permanently.
Spider-Man was one of those to fall victim to the Poisons. This led to a rather cathartic fight to the death between Venom and Poison Spider-Man that Venom won.

Now, you might be saying, “Didn’t you JUST talk about a story where Spider-Man was a symbiote monster called Poison already? Isn’t this confusing?” Yes. Yes it is. So confusing that when they released a Marvel Legends figure for Poison Spider-Man from Venomverse, the profile information on the back of the box described the story from What If? The Other instead. Whoops!
