Reflection: Captain Nissen Going Through Whirlpool Rapids, Niagara Falls
Tumblr media
I am quite keen on this film because it's very short, but it shows the passion and the sense of victory through the famous Niagara waterfall.
The sound track of the first 50 seconds, it represents the feeling of victory through the sound from high pitched and radical musical instruments. After that, the rhythm of the music quickened, from drumbeats to orchestral sounds. The sense of nervous comes out.
The film is short, even though the camera slimply tracking the boat, with the help of background music, the whole process becomes compact. The film clearly shows that the voyage is quite dangerous and the sailors are extremly courageous.
As Scott MacDonald said that ‘The techonology of the recording seems at least as complex as the techonology of the boat’, the direcotor controls the rhythm of the film through the sound changes.

Today, 27 August is the Memorial of Blessed Dominic Barberi of the Mother of God C.P. (1792-1849) Apostle to England – Passionist Priest, Theologian, Confessor, Teacher, Spiritual Direcotor, Writer, Missionary, Evangelist – born on 22 June 1792 at Viterbo, Italy and died at 3pm  on 27 August 1849 at Reading, Berkshire, England of a heart attack.   Patronage – England.   St Dominic was an Italian, a member of the Passionist Congregation and was extremely prominent in spreading Catholicism in England.   He was a very positive influence on and instrumental in, the conversion of Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890).
youtube
Dominic was born to a poor family of Italian farmers in 1792.   He was orphaned at the tender age of eight and an uncle and aunt raised him in the town of Merlano.   Young Dominic was not sent to school but instead was taught to shepherd sheep.   But the child always found time to pray as he tended the sheep and he also diligently taught himself to read and write.
When Napoleon closed all the religious houses in Italy, Dominic became acquainted with several Passionists living in exile near his town.   During this time, Dominic experienced a divine message to join the Passionists and one day go to England.
Dominic had promised God that if he were not drafted, he would become a Passionist. Dominic’s uncle and aunt had also planned a marriage for him.   But just before the arranged marriage was to take place, he slipped away and instead entered the nearby Passionist monastery at Vetralla.   Dominic studied eagerly, for he had a brilliant mind.   He was ordained in Rome on 1 March 1821.   For the next nineteen years he shared the life and ministries of the Passionists in Italy but his heart was in England.
Mission in England In 1833, Dominic became a delegate to the General Chapter.   In this capacity, he was able to plant the seed to send missionaries to England.    By the time of the 1839 General Chapter, changes in the Congregation were afoot.   The new General Superior was the charismatic Father Anthony Testa.   By April of 1840, Father Testa decided that Dominic should go to England, though he worried for Dominic’s failing health.   He sent him with three companions to Belgium to make a foundation in that country with the hope that from Belgium the mission to England could be realised.   Dominic established the first Passionist monastery outside of Italy in 1840, at Ere in Belgium.
Tumblr media
Finally, the time came to establish the first Passionist residence in England.   Father Dominic and a companion went to England and obtained a house at Aston Hall in Staffordshire.   One of his first ministries was the celebration of the 1842 Holy Week services.
While in Italy and later in Belgium, Barberi had always kept up a keen interest in the Oxford Movement.   In 1841 a letter by John Dobree Dalgairns appeared in L’Univers explaining the position of the Anglican High Church party.   Barberi decided to respond to this letter in the mistaken belief that it represented the views of the entire faculty of Oxford University.   (Dalgairns was an undergraduate when he wrote the letter.) Barberi’s “Letter to University Professors at Oxford” describes his long hopes for the conversion of England and his belief that the men of Oxford would be instrumental in such a conversion.   The letter, through the help of Ignatius Spencer, eventually ended up in the hands of Dalgairns, who was residing with John Henry Newman at Littlemore. Barberi repudiated the Anglican claim that the 39 Articles could be interpreted in a Catholic light.   In their continued correspondence Dalgairns and Barberi debated the Catholic position and Dalgairns requested copies of the Passionist Rule and Dominic’s ‘The Lament of England’.   Eventually Dalgairns was received into the Catholic Church by Barberi at Aston in September 1845.
In October of that same year Barberi visited Littlemore, where Newman made his confession to him.   Newman relates in his “Apologia” how Barberi arrived soaked from the rain and as was drying himself by the fire when Newman knelt and asked to be received into the Catholic Church.   This event is marked by a sculpture in the Catholic Church of Blessed Dominic Barberi at Littlemore.   Two of Newman’s companions at Littlemore were also received, and Barberi celebrated Mass for them the following morning.   Subsequently, Newman and Barberi always took note of each other’s careers.
Dominic felt immensely blessed to have received the famous Anglican into the Catholic Church.   “What a spectacle it was for me to see Newman at my feet!   All that I have suffered since I left Italy has been well compensated by this event  . I hope the effects of such a conversion may be great.”
Tumblr media
English vocations were few but Dominic was deeply consoled by the arrival of Father George Spencer who received the habit on 5 January 1847.   Spencer was a convert of some years and already ordained, when Dominic came to England in 1841.   Now as a fellow Passionist, he proved a great comfort to Dominic and the Passionists.   A little note of interest – Venerable Ignatius Spencer of St Paul (1799-1864) born as Hon George Spencer, was a son of the Second Earl Spencer.   He converted from Anglicanism to the Roman Catholic Church, entered the Passionist Order in 1841 at the age of 31, scandalising some in the Victorian society and spent his life working for the conversion of England to the Catholic faith.   He is also known as the ‘Apostle of Prayer for England’ and the great-great-great uncle of Princess Diana (died 1997).
Tumblr media
In August, 1849, Dominic was returning to Aston Hall from London.   About five miles from Reading, Dominic got desperately sick.   He was taken off the train to be attended by a doctor but there was not a room for him at the small station of Pangbourne.   Father Louis put him back on the train for Reading.   He died there from a heart attack at 3:00 p.m., 27 August 1849.
In the tradition of Blessed Dominic (he was beatified by Pope Paul VI in 1963), Passionists would be aware that ecumenism is an essential part of their heritage.   At the time of the Second Vatican Council, Passionists accepted with joy the call to engage in ecumenical ministries.   The “renewal” of the Congregation in the spirit of Vatican II would challenge the modern Passionist to this ecumenical mission.
In his years in England Dominic established three churches and several chapels, preached innumerable missions and received hundreds of converts, not only Newman but others such as Spencer and Dalgairns and many unknown by name.

Premonition
So.
As of now I have no means of watching Pacific Rim: Uprising.
I do hope it’ll find it’s way on Netflix cause no way in frozen hell I am going to pay for a BD of this movie.
I do however start my research on it - preparing to write a review proper.
...
As far as I can tell now this movie is a goddamn trainwreck and I wonder how it even came to be.
Listening to the direcotor’s commentary and how he describes “those cool and original ideas” he supposedly had.
And ALL OF THOSE “ideas” he mentions are plainly stolen from the first movie.
“Cool new weapons for a jeager like the chest cannon and the plasma sword”
You mean... JUST LIKE GIPSY DANGER?
What’s new here? That you coated the sword in cheat CGI fire and called it plasma?
I lost it when he described the sword cutting a building scene as - stay with me - “Something we thought was missing in the first movie”.
You mean...
LIKE THE SCENE FROM THE FIRST MOVIE WHERE GIPSY DANGER PUNCHES THE BUILDING?
Damn. I just feel that I’m going to tear this movie apart.

SpaceVR, Tree and The Extraordinary Honey Bee Selected for HTC Vive’s ‘VR for Impact’ Programme
HTC has today announced the first grant recipients in its ‘VR for Impact’ program. Announced back in January, VR for Impact is the HTC Vive’s $10 million USD commitment to drive virtual reality (VR) content and technologies that will increase awareness and create positive impact in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Commemorating Earth Day, HTC Vive has unveiled new projects from three creators with visions for how VR can address the UN’s set of defined goals for the planet, such as “Climate Action” and “Zero Hunger.” These projects include SpaceVR, the first VR satellite launching into space later this year, Tree, a creatively immersive perspective on deforestation, and The Extraordinary Honey Bee, a joint project with Häagen-Dazs, Reach Agency and SPECTACLE to raise awareness about dwindling bee populations.
“We believe virtual reality and the immersive experiences it delivers have the potential to positively impact the biggest challenges that mankind faces,” said Rikard Steiber, President of Viveport, HTC Vive. “We welcome the first VR for Impact grant recipients who will introduce VR as a powerful tool in raising awareness for the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, and what better way to mark Earth Day than to unveil projects with three unique visions for helping the planet.”
SpaceVR is a VR platform which will allow users to experience space through the immersion of VR. Founded in 2015, the team has built the first VR satellite, the Overview 1, which will launch later this year on Space X. Once in orbit, SpaceVR will stream video that users can experience in full virtual reality or as 360-degree video.
“We’re thrilled to be chosen as one of the first participants in HTC Vive’s VR for Impact program,” said Ryan Holmes, CEO of SpaceVR. “We share a vision with Vive that VR and its power to immerse and affect viewers like no other medium can be used to make the world a better place. By launching the first virtual reality satellite, we want to create the most vivid and visceral reminder yet that despite our individual trials and travails, we all live on this same fragile pale blue dot hurtling through space.”
Tree is a critically acclaimed VR experience enhanced by haptic feedback to immerse viewers in the tragic fate that befalls a rainforest tree. The experience brings to light the harrowing realities of deforestation, one of the largest contributors to global warming. Tree is an official selection of Sundance Film Festival New Frontier and Tribeca Film Festival Immersive 2017.
“We are incredibly honored to announce our collaboration with the Vive VR for Impact program, [sic]” said Milica Zec, co-direcotor on Tree and co-founder of New Reality Company. “New Reality shares with VR for Impact a core tenet: that VR storytelling is key to raising awareness for the many challenges facing our earth.”
Added Winslow Porter, co-director on Tree and co-founder of New Reality Company: “The Tree VR experience has incited emotional, empowering reactions among a wide array of viewers. During the final moments of Tree, a number of individuals have cried or shouted while in the headset and vowed afterward to take action. Together with VR for Impact, we want to reach people from all over the world to help make widespread global impact.”
The Extraordinary Honey Bee is a project looking at the alarming rate at which bee populations are falling. Users will shrink down to the size of a bee for a guided VR experience where they learn of the risks bee colonies face and solutions currently being implemented to offset their decline.
“We believe in the transformative and educational power of VR and are excited to use this technology to bring the plight of the honey bee to life,” said Orchid Bertelsen, Nestlé USA Digital Innovation Lead. “We are thrilled to partner with Vive, not only because of their innovative technology and valuable audience, but because of their ideals and shared belief of harnessing the power of VR to drive true impact.”
HTC Vive launched VR for Impact as a multi-year program, and SpaceVR, Tree and The Extraordinary Honey Bee represent the first grants awarded. Additional grant recipients for 2017 will continue to be revealed throughout the year all projects that receive funding by VR for Impact will be available on Viveport, HTC’s app store for VR. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on the VR for Impact programme.

Russia blames Syrian airstrike on chemical weapons factory for deaths
(CNN)Russia's defense ministry is blaming a Syrian airstrike on a "terrorist" ammunition depot for the deaths of dozens of people in what has been described as a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria's Idlib province.
Arwa Damon: It defies logic

According to a statement posted Wednesday on the Russian ministry's Facebook page, the strike hit "workshops, which produced chemical warfare munitions" in the eastern outskirts of the Khan Sheikhun town.
Activists said the Syrian regime was responsible for the killings, leading the United Nations to replace a scheduled Security Council session for Wednesday morning with an emergency meeting.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's military denied using chemical weapons and blamed rebels for the carnage.
The latest
At least 70 people died -- including 10 children -- and many remain ill
While it has not yet been confirmed, multiple medical experts have said the attack looks like the result of a nerve agent, like sarin.
The attack came as the EU opened a two-day a conference on the future of Syria and the region.
The UK and France circulated a resolution calling for the United Nations Security Council to condemn the attack.
US Sen. John McCain called for President Donald Trump to send a strong signal to Assad that the attack will not be tolerated.

He described seeing whole families who had died, corpses of those who had perished instantly in the attack, and also the dying breaths of those who the medical teams were unable to save.
"I have never in my life seen anything like that," he told CNN's Christiane Amanpour.
"The view was heartbreaking. It makes you (cry) blood."
He added he didn't see anyone who looked like a combatant among the dead.
Opinion: When it comes to Syria, the ball's in Trump's court
UN emergency meeting, resolution
As an EU-UN chaired conference on Syria's future got underway in Brussels, the United States, Great Britain and France circulated a resolution to be presented at an emergency session at the United Nations Security Council condemning a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria.
If the resolution goes to a vote, it is likely to face a veto threat from Russia. The move is seen as forcing Moscow to be shamed by supporting the Assad regime even as its again suspected of a chemical weapons attack.
What'll it take for world to intervene in Syria?

But Feras, the doctor who witnessed the aftermath of the attack, says the mood on the ground in some parts of Syria is frustration that the international community is not holding the Syrian regime to account for its atrocities.
"I feel frustrated, because of the international community and the UN that have not forced the regime to abide by the Security Council resolution but... has been watching and doing nothing, which has allowed the regime to keep bombing the people with cluster bombs, scud missiles and now gas."
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley condemned the attack but previously had said that Assad's ouster was not a priority for the Trump administration.
Trump to Obama in 2013: Do not attack Syria

"Do we think he's a hindrance? Yes. Are we going to sit there and focus on getting him out? No," she said last week.
The Syrian Coalition, an umbrella opposition group, referred to the suspected chemical attack as a "crime similar to that in Eastern Ghouta in 2013 that the international community allowed to pass without accountability or punishment."
That attack tested the resolve of then-President Barack Obama in the face of atrocities committed by the Assad regime.
Referring to the 2013 attack, McCain told CNN: "We've seen this movie before, it was when Barack Obama said they would have a red line, they crossed it and he did nothing. Bashar Assad and his friends, the Russians, take note of what Americans say."
The Ghouta attack prompted Obama to ask Congress to authorize military action against Syria in 2013. Shortly after, Syria agreed to a Russian proposal to give up control of its chemical weapons, leading Obama to retreat from threats of military action.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters Tuesday that the attack are a "consequence of the past administration's weakness and irresolution."
Body count expected to rise
Khaula Sawah, board member and former CEO of the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (OUSSM), another umbrella organization, said that her field team in Idlib had received reports of whole families discovered dead, and were expecting the body count to rise.
She said that her field team had reported that, while nerve gas cannot be confirmed at this time, based on the symptoms of the patients, doctors believe that this is some form of organophosphate nerve agent.
"The symptoms rapidly developed within minutes, including redness of eyes, foaming at the mouth, contracted pupils, severe dyspnoea (labored breathing) or shortness of breath and suffocation," she told CNN.
"The symptoms progressed so rapid that fatality occurred within 10 minutes. If there were no supportive care or ICU, people were dying."
She said that a decontamination point had been set up for victims before taking them to Turkey to receive treatment. Fifty of the injured have already been relocated to Turkey, she said.
Samples of the chemical agent were being collected and coordinated by the Idlib Direcotorate, she added.
US: Early belief is that Syrian attack used sarin gas
Denial
Assad's military denied using chemical weapons and Russia, Syria's strong ally, said it had no warplanes in the vicinity.
It pinned the "use of chemical and poisonous material" on rebel forces "to achieve their despicable goals and agendas."
Earlier, Syrian state-run media had reported that there was an explosion at a rebel "poison gas factory" in the countryside of Idlib.
Russia's defense ministry said that a Syrian airstrike had hit a "terrorist" ammunition depot in the eastern outskirts of Khan Sheikhun, according to a statement posted Wednesday on the ministry's Facebook page.
The ministry said "terrorists had been transporting chemical munitions from this largest arsenal to the territory of Iraq."
Analysis: Why use chlorine bombs in Syria?
Children affected
The UN's children's agency UNICEF echoed calls for action following this latest atrocity.
"The images of children choking and dying in the streets of Idlib, Syria, following alleged chemical weapons attacks, are as horrific as they are heartbreaking," UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said in a statement.
"If confirmed, these attacks must do more than provoke our outrage; they must compel action by those with the power and the ability to bring an end to this devastating violence.
"The children of Syria have already suffered far too much, for far too long."
