Is it weird that despite you saying that 'When Harry met Tom' is somewhat dumb she still strikes me as smarter, more self-aware and independent than canon Harry? I mean, she survives being thrown 50 years in the past without money, friends or connections, manages to get a job and fake some documents to get into Hogwarts. That seems more than canon Harry ever did. I adore your takes on canon and best of luck with your future Lily Evans/Tom fic (Tily? Toly?, do they even have a ship name?)
I mean, she is, but that’s because canon Harry Potter presents an extraordinarily low bar. Though to give “When Harry Met Tom” Harry some credit, I’d say she’s clever enough to be very stupid/
The big example I can think of is the Chamber of Secrets fiasco. Harry knows that doing it potentially has catastrophic consequences, she does think that part through. She approaches it fairly logically and brings roosters with her this time and figures that there must be an easier way out than hanging onto Fawkes for dear life. Unfortunately, she didn’t think through that maybe chickens are unreliable or that the exit Tom Riddle used might not be where the entrance is. Snakes don’t have stairs, Harry.
So basically, she’s cleverer than Harry, but sometimes this does her a great disservice as she’s able to get into far more trouble. (Try to raise Tom Riddle’s sinking reputation, unintentionally become a quidditch star and start a giant feud between Slytherin and Ravenclaw while Tom just becomes more and more convinced that being a loser is great).
But yes, she’s still ten steps ahead of where canon Harry ever was, where his first action would probably be to show up on Dumbledore’s doorstep, confess everything, and somehow convince the guy he was from the future which... Could not possibly lead to good places.
As for a ship name, I’m not really a huge ship name person (I often find them entirely ridiculous), but Tomily I suppose?
