Big thanks @travelinggentleman - «Bill Evans: “Waltz for Debby” performed in London for the British Broadcasting Corporation in March 1965. This composition which was a musical portrait of his niece was originally recorded in 1956 as a solo piano piece for Bill Evan’s debut album “New Jazz Conceptions” which was released in 1957 on Riverside Records. Five years later on the 25th of June 1961 pianist Evans recorded this piece at the Village Vanguard with his first Trio that consisted of bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. LaFaro died only ten days after the recording in a car accident and Motion left in 1964. This is Bill Evan’s third Trio with Chuck Israels on bass and Larry Bunker on drum. “The Cannonball Adderley Quintet at the Lighthouse” was the third album by this outstanding quintet led by the great #CannonballAdderley and probably the best at this point. The setting is probably the most celebrated jazz spots in Southern California, The Lighthouse which is in a suburb of Los Angeles. On this one-day occasion it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon-and-night stand by the quintet which was a culmination of a month-long triumphal stay in and around L.A. At the time The Lighthouse itself was something special located at 30 Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach, California. It has been active as a jazz showcase since 1949 and, under the name "The Lighthouse", was one of the best-known West Coast jazz clubs from the 1950s through the late 1970s. When Lee Morgan’s “Live at the Lighthouse” was released last week, I started to listen all my albums recorded there and this is one of the best in my opinion. Because Cannonball’s quintet at the time was one of the few Eastern groups to have played there that the response from an earlier session there that month, they became the first non-cool jazz group to record there. It’s not too surprising in the Californians’ reaction to the quintet, because it had become quite clear had established a universal recognition as one of the most invigorating groups during that time. The group which had been organized in the Fall of 1959, from the start they enjoyed an overwhelmingly widespread and passionate public acceptance. The group was amazingly close knit with Cannonball on alto, his brother #NatAdderley on trumpet, #VictorFeldman on piano, #SamJones on bass and #LouisHayes on drums. This just went up for auction at the eBay store yesterday. I honestly don’t know for sure what the deets are about this. Based on the typeset for the #coverart it looks like the original stereo release from #1959 and the label art matches up to, but the back cover doesn’t? It’s not in the greatest of condition either but it plays well so....I put it up at auction. This also came with a New York Times clipping from what seems to be #1963 based on my research.
