Philly Joe Jones Sextet "Blues For Dracula" 紛れもないハード・バップ・ドラミング作品であることは、冒頭の語りに驚かせれた後に訪れます。初リーダー作で、この出だしは強烈ですよ。 1958年9月17日, New York City録音。 どうやら、彼の趣味であるドラキュラ映画の主演者Bela Lugosi(ベラ・ルゴシ)への敬愛らしいです。本作、完全に色物と扱われることが多いらしいのですが、当然ですよね。ジャケットデザインもタイトルもしかり... 。 でも、そんなことは聴くにつれて全くの誤解だと気付くでしょう。 ドラキュラがタイトル・チューンになった理由...この録音の直前まで在籍していたマイルス・デイヴィス六重奏団のライブで、フィリーは盛んにこのベラ・ルゴシの物真似を演って人気を博していたからだったそうです。冒頭"Blues For Dracula"の独特な話し方は、このドラキュラ役者ベラ・ルゴシの声帯模写。 このトークのルーツは、レニー・ブルース (1925-1966)というお笑い芸人。ジョージ・ムラーツ(b)もコンサートのMCで言っていたように、昔のジャズクラブはジャズ演奏とお笑い芸を抱き合わせにしていたらしいです。レニー・ブルースのスタンダップ・コメディとビル・エバンス・トリオ、無論ドラムはフィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズの組み合わせでクラブ出演したことも。レニーは、従来タブーだった人種ネタや宗教ネタで世の中を痛烈に風刺したスタンダップ・コメディアンで、ビートニクやボヘミア志向の若者達にカルト的な人気を博したそうです。 私服刑事がレニーのステージを内偵している時は、わざと警官に多いカトリック教徒ネタ、アイルランド系をコケにするネタで挑発。ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードのオーナー、マックス・ゴードンが青くなると｢だってお客にウケるんだから｣と平然としていたらしいです。 民族ネタがイジメにならず、イジられる側にもウケたのは、ユダヤ人である自分自身を笑い飛ばす自虐ネタ。当然ながら当局に睨まれ、ビリー・ホリディやバド・パウエルたちと同じく、猥褻語の使用や麻薬所持で逮捕歴数度、徐々に活動の場を失い、40歳の若さで薬物中毒で亡くなったらしい。 で、彼の信奉者は、ロビン・ウィリアムスやウッディ・アレン、リチャード・プライヤーなど後輩コメディアンから、フランク・ザッパ、ボブ・ディランに至るまで音楽界にも多く、フィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズもその一人だったと。 本作のプロデューサー、オリン・キープニュースの著作集｢The View from Within｣によれば、レニー・ブルースがクラブ出演するとフィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズは、頻繁に団体を引き連れて応援に行ったそう。 トーク部分も恐らくはレニーが書いたものかも知れないと。当初レニー自身が、トーキング・サイドマンとしてこの録音に参加したがっていたとのことですが、契約の問題で実現しなかったらしいです。 奇妙な作品の紹介が先になって肝心の録音評が最後になってしまいました。ドラマー名義なので、コントラストと歯切れの良いShure M44-7を選択してみましょう。ところが、かなり喧しい... 。圧倒的にSumico Pearlがベスト・マッチです！中音域の滑らかさが管楽器の音色をとても美しく表現してくれます。別のアルバムに変身！です。何か分からない魅力のあるアルバム、私は大好きです。 #RiversideRecords ‎- RLP 12-282 #PhillyJoeJones (ds) #TommyFlanagan (p) #JimmyGarrison (b) #JohnnyGriffin (sa) #JulianPriester (tr) #NatAdderley (co) Producer - #OrrinKeepnews Engineer - #JackHiggins Photography By - #PaulWeller Design - #PaulBacon フィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズのPhillyはフィラデルフィアの意味で、本名はJoseph Rudolph Jones。偉大な先輩ドラマーであるジョー・ジョーンズと区別するために、出身地のフィリーを付加。ジョー・ジョーンズの方は｢パパ・ジョー｣と呼ぶことが多いそう。 マイルス・デイヴィス・クインテットの一員、マイルスとは公私共に仲がよく、互いに｢ブラザー｣と呼び合う仲。 #jazz #fuzey #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #ジャズ #スイングジャーナル #レコード #stayhome *作品を知るとジャズはもっと輝きます。情報くださる先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci4klxLv0sG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

@jazz.today with Julian Priester was a versatile and highly advanced trombonist capable of playing hard bop, post-bop, R&B, fusion, or full-on avant-garde jazz; however, he remains under-appreciated due to the paucity of sessions he recorded under his own name. Priester was born in Chicago on June 29, 1935, and started out on the city's thriving blues and R&B scene, playing with artists like Muddy Waters, Dinah Washington, and Bo Diddley; he also worked with Sun Ra's early progressive big band outfits during the mid-'50s. In 1958, Priester moved to New York and joined Max Roach's band, appearing on classics like Freedom Now Suite. In 1960, Priester also recorded two hard bop sessions as a leader, Keep Swingin' and Spiritsville. After leaving Roach in 1961, Priester appeared often as a sideman on Blue Note dates, recording with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Blue Mitchell, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, and McCoy Tyner; on a more adventurous note, he also worked with Sam Rivers and played in John Coltrane's Africa/Brass ensemble. Priester worked with Duke Ellington for six months during 1969-70, and shortly thereafter accepted his highest-profile gig with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters-era fusion band. Upon his departure in 1973, Priester moved to San Francisco and recorded two dates for ECM, 1974's Love, Love and 1977's Polarization. In the '80s, Priester joined both Dave Holland's group and the faculty of Cornish College in Seattle, and later returned to Sun Ra's big band. During the '90s, Priester continued to work with Holland, and toured with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra. In 1997, he finally led another session of his own for Postcards, titled Hints on Light and Shadow, which featured Sam Rivers. Julian Priester Pepe Mtoto - Love, Love (ECM, 1974). For awhile I thought the abstract grooves, cosmic atmospheres, telepathic communication and open-ended structures of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band ended with Sextant in 1973, but I've been excited to discover projects from other band members like Bennie Maupin, Eddie Henderson, and Julian Priester carrying on the Mwandishi spirit. I highly recommend this album to fans of the innovative and exploratory period of jazz fusion of the early 70’s, where electric instrumentation, funk rhythms, experimental production techniques, and spacey synthesizers met the improvisation, freedom, and uplifting soul of the spiritual jazz of the 60’s.
