"The Chase" (1946) - A well done colorization!

I wasn't crazy about this movie, but it's colorization is infinitely better than the last one I shared. This movie actually warrants a colorization. The colorized version looks surreal and dreamlike, in a way that's fitting for the movie's tone.

I could never be a defense attorney. I could never lie for a murderer, rapist, or evil human being. The way these defense attorneys be lying for their clients because they were paid insane amounts of money is DISGUSTING. I think defense attorneys were created so the innocent can be defended & the guilty to be punished appropriately! Nothing else not getting the guilty acquitted or a mistrial because you are dismissing the oath of law.

I don’t know how these lawyers sleep at night knowing that a murderer, rapist, or evil person is free to wreak havoc on other’s lives. It’s disgusting to watch these trials while knowing the defendant is guilty. I could never become a liar for money. Defense lawyers are sociopaths it’s no other word to describe them. It’s no way they can have a normal home life if they are lying in the court of law everyday.

How could Johnny Cochran(OJ Simpson lawyer) sleep at night, how could Dick DeGuerin(Robert Durst lawyer) sleep at night, how could Jennifer Bonjean(Bill Cosby lawyer) sleep at night, & so many other lawyers like John Gotti’s lawyers.

It’s a disgrace to law. That’s why people don’t believe in the justice system. It’s so rigged & it’s stomach turning evil!

When the Chandler situation first prompted Jackson to seek legal help, his team consisted of entertainment attorney Bert Fields and his private investigator Anthony Pellicano. It wasn't long before two other Los Angeles-based attorneys were hired. Howard Weitzman was brought on board first and he in turn recruited Johnnie Cochran. Both were highly regarded criminal defense lawyers.

It wasn't long before Evan Chandler's attorney realized that the case had grown far too complex and high profile for him to handle on his own. Barry Rothman then hired his own lawyer - Robert Shapiro.

Despite her bitter dispute with Evan, June eventually had a change of heart and the two agreed to hire an attorney to represent their combined interests. June and Evan retained the famed activist attorney Gloria Allred. Allred's strategy was to go public with the allegations to force the Los Angeles district attorney's office to file criminal charges against Michael Jackson. But attorney Robert Shapiro raised concerns with Evan about Allred's strategy. He argued that fighting this very sensitive fight in front of a camera might not be the way to go.

Shapiro suggested that Chandler use a civil attorney named Larry Feldman.

Feldman explained that if Gloria Allred went on camera and made a public statement, the Jackson people would have to do the same. The press, he said, would have a field day with tit-for-tat comments flying back and forth. The district attorney would just be annoyed, not spurred into action. And if the objective was to get some money, get the boy treatment, and get on with life, then having an attorney front and center at news conferences was not the right option, Feldman counseled. This made sense to Evan Chandler, and he quickly dismissed Allred and placed Feldman in charge of the case.

The Jackson Team had claimed that the boy's allegations had grown out of a contentious custody battle. But the custody battle had ensued only after Jordie revealed being molested to his father. However, what began as a simple filing of legal papers in a custody dispute would quickly evolve into a pitched legal battle involving the megastar, allegations of child abuse, and multi-million dollar settlement negotiations.

When Feldman filed a startlingly graphic four-page declaration signed by Jordan Chandler, he was only thirteen years old and in the eighth grade.

A Dangerous Place (1994)

Ever wonder what The Karate Kid would look like if it also featured a ghost and a murder mystery? Well watch A Dangerous Place and wonder no more! Or… don’t.

When Greg (Dean Cochran) is found dead after an apparent suicide, his younger brother, Ethan (Ted Jan Roberts) suspects the Scorpions - a group of ruthless schoolmates who practice karate - are somehow responsible.

Though you won’t recognize the similarities at first, this is undoubtedly a Karate Kid clone. Unfortunately, this film contains none of the 1984 classic’s charm. The Mr. Miyagi equivalent (played by Mako) barely plays a part in the film. He’s only there so Ethan can already know how to defend himself and set up the big confrontation with the Scorpions at the end of the story. They’re of course led by Gavin (Marshall R. Teague), a ruthless white teacher who believes compassion is a weakness and that no trick is too dirty if it means victory. Even for this type of character, he’s broadly written. During his class, he quizzes students about whether Machievelli’s tyrannical advice should be followed - he already knows the answer. When Ethan gets into a fight in the cafeteria, Gavin asks his fellow teachers to stand back and watch. At least all Kreese from Cobra Kai wanted was to defeat Daniel. This guy? He asks his lead pupil, Taylor (Corey Feldman) to go for the throat and kill his opponent!

All that stuff’s primarily in the second half. The first has Greg get in over his head with the scorpions, die and have his murder covered up so Ethan can start investigating what happened. I don’t know whether to praise the film for not wasting our time pretending we don’t know who is responsible for Greg’s death, or to criticize it for doing this basic plot wrong. I suspect writer Sean Dash had no choice but to go with this unusual direction because the movie would’ve been too short if we didn’t have all those scenes of the Scorpions leading the police on surprisingly destructive car chases, committing crimes and otherwise establishing themselves as delinquents to Ethan. Considering the business they’re up to after hours, the over-the-top bullying they do at the school is beneath them and a waste of their time.

I’m surprised the picture didn’t try and lean more into the romance or student-teacher relationship that would’ve fit naturally into the story. Of course, that would’ve made A Dangerous Place even more similar to The Karate Kid and then, there would’ve been no room for Greg to return as a ghost. Now, at first, you might think the dead brother isn’t actually there. Whenever Ethan sees him, it’s when he’s dreaming, or feeling deep emotions. I thought he was just a figment of our hero's imagination too, until Greg gives his younger brother information only the dead boy could know. It’s probably just bad writing (it wouldn’t be the only instance in this film) and if that’s the case, I think this is the only movie I’ve ever seen to accidentally feature a ghost. I guess that sort of makes it amusing.

There are a few unintentional laughs in A Dangerous Place but not many. This is an utterly forgettable film that you would never recommend to anyone because everything it does, you can see better elsewhere. You’d even rather watch The Next Karate Kid than A Dangerous Place. (March 29, 2022)
