Matewan (1987). A labor union organizer comes to an embattled mining community brutally and violently dominated and harassed by the mining company.
Movies about American unions, particularly American unions in coal country, are remarkably common, but few manage the level of grit, honesty and hope that Matewan does. What a great film! Really drums home the resilience of this community and the challenges of unifying workers when those at the top are all too willing to exploit differences of race, gender and class in order to divide. Just a great, well-made film. 8/10.

Little Women (2019, Greta Gerwig)
26/12/2023
Little Women is a 2019 film written and directed by Greta Gerwig.
The film is the seventh film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's novel of the same name. The cast includes Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel and Chris Cooper.
New York, 1868. Josephine "Jo" March is a young teacher who lives in a boarding house and tries to make her way as a writer, however only managing to publish short stories with a local publisher, Mr. Dashwood.
Concord, Massachusetts, 1861.
In October 2013, Sony announced that it was working on a new film adaptation of Little Women, nineteen years after the previous one: Olivia Mich would write the screenplay, for the production of Robin Swicord and Denise Di Novi. In March 2015, produced Amy Pascal joined the development, while Sarah Polley entered negotiations, which later failed, to rewrite the film and potentially direct it. In August 2016, Greta Gerwig was tapped to rewrite the screenplay. In June 2018, in light of the success of her film Lady Bird, she was also made official as director.
Arnon Milchan's New Regency Pictures and Columbia Pictures co-financed the film.

Matewan (1987)
Matewan is a dramatized version of the Battle of Matewan, a coal miner’s strike that took place in Matewan, West Virginia in 1920. Starring Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones, and Mary McDonnell, Matewan was a critical success, but flopped in the box office. The film was praised for its acting as well as the writing, holding the film up and allowing the message to get across clearly. Matewan received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography and ranked number 21 on Empire’s list of 50 Greatest American Independent Movies. Needless to say, this film is a must-watch for a great grasp of real-life anarchism at work.

Every time I bring up The Muppets (2011) someone inevitably says “oh yeah, like the song man or muppet” and I love that song, but there’s so much more to that movie than a man having an existential crisis about being a muppet.
Muppets under the cut :)
I’m not going to explain the entire plot, you can either watch the movie yourself or read about it on Wikipedia.
First let’s talk about Jack Black. The cast of this movie is incredible, with Jack Black playing himself. We learn that Jack Black, as himself, runs an anger management group that Animal is a part of. The muppets need a celebrity guest so they can raise money for the telethon and instead of just asking him, they straight up kidnap him. During the telethon he’s an unwilling participant in a barbershop quartet cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. You should really go listen to it, it’s actually really good.
Speaking of covers, we also get a cover of CeeLo Green’s hit song Forget You which is sung by Camilla and the Chickens. Camilla as in Gonzo’s chicken wife. It’s entirely chickens. It’s incredible.
A knockoff version of the muppets, calling themselves the Moopets, sing their version of Rainbow Commection which is very reminiscent of the Vegas life style.
The villain of the movie, an oil tycoon named Tex Richman, has an amazing villain song titled Lets Talk About Me. In the movie the song is shortened, but in the extended cut of the song we learn why Tex hates the muppets so much. Here’s some of those lyrics:
I recall a heartbreaking story
About my own tenth birthday party
Should've been a glorious day for me
I'd have been happy as can be
But the Muppets were there,
To put on a show!
They started to dance,
They were telling their jokes!
I didn't laugh,
I didn't know how!
Then my friends,
They all turned around,
And they laughed at me!
They laughed at me!
I hate you, Muppets so!
I was gonna talk more about this movie and how much I love it but I don’t really have the energy or the words to describe how much I love it. You should just go watch it, or at least listen to the soundtrack. The muppets are truly amazing and they never miss
