As the Tate Modern has become a crucial cultural attraction of London since it opened in 2000, the 64.5-metre-high tower created 60 percent more exhibition space for the gallery. A building conglomerate is created as the new spaces are connected with the existing galleries and the project appeared as one thing, not as separate phases at the end. The Gallery features an exterior of latticed brickwork and folded surfaces, while its interior includes an assortment of overground and underground galleries, as well as a new roof terrace offering panoramic views of the city. This article written by Jon Cummings in 2001 explores ideas about wearable, architecture and the interest in pneumatics and transient environments heightened by aeronautical exploration. Wearable architecture was transient and avoided land ownership policies. The vessel was a form of freedom. The senses can be amputated. “a mobile architecture allows a unique symbiotic relationship with nature.” Pneumatic devices allowed separation from a corrupt society. He describes the idea of escaping reality or an existential existence in the final sentence:  “It represents a searching for an otherness always just beyond the grasp of our present temporal existence and the rigidity that most often structures our built environments.”
