So I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of some really cool art campaigns and out of home Billboards but this new Holey Moley 3D billboard is the coolest most insane thing ever. In collaboration with @ignitioncreative and @holeymoleyabc I created this insane montage art for their third season 3D in 2D! It was translated into this epic billboard creation, chocked full of illuminated parts, rotating windmills and countless 3D elements! This is a whole new ballgame! The War with Grandpa (2020)

You’ll laugh at The War with Grandpa rather than with it but at least you’ll laugh. This somewhat redeems a movie perfectly suited to the word "dumb".

Recently widowed Ed Marino (Robert De Niro) is asked by his daughter Sally (Uma Thurman) to move in with her family. To make space for grandpa, Peter (Oakes Fegley) must give up his room and moves to the attic. Angry at this injustice, the boy makes it his mission to chase grandpa away, but the old man is prepared to retaliate.

Little kids probably won’t see the many many flaws adults will spot right away. In an attempt to make Peter not seem like a spoiled brat who hates his lonely grandfather, the attic is made unliveable. It's infested with bats and rats. The roof leaks. It’s inexplicably accessible by a door rather than a trap in the floor but you’re not supposed to think about that. Thinking is your enemy when you watch this movie. When Peter glues a glass jar to his grandfather’s dresser, the old man rips the container in half like it's a paper bag. Ed is also tricked into spraying foam sealant - instead of shaving cream - all over his face (impossible). He's woken in the middle of the night by music no one else in the house can hear. He retaliates by rigging Peter’s backpack with explosive spaghetti sauce, which gets him in trouble with the school bully. It’s extra bad because he goes to one of these institutions where big kids do whatever they want and adult supervision is nonexistent. Peter’s younger sister Jenny (Poppy Gagnon) is obsessed with Christmas so her birthday party is the elaborate kind of celebration only a rich family could afford but mom and dad (Rob Riggle) can't afford a home big enough for their family. Peter’s friend (Juliocesar Chavez) lends him a snake for prank purposes. The reptile eventually goes on its own adventure, terrorizing Sally while she’s driving. We never see it afterwards, so who knows where it went. The little details the movie gets wrong come frequently enough to ensure perpetual bamboozlement.

You can tell this movie was shelved until only the barren landscape of the pandemic made it viable as entertainment. The extended scenes set in the now-defunct Fry’s Electronics are a hint. This movie has wall-to-wall big names in major roles. What were they thinking? Someone who loves bad children's movies must have some dirt on Cheech Marin, Christopher Walken, Rob Riggle, Jane Seymour, and De Niro.

I never thought I'd witness two scenes where De Niro exposes himself to his son-in-law for comedy in a single movie. What’s even crazier is that the sequel the final shot hints at… is apparently happening. Down to the music video and bloopers that play during the end credits, The War with Grandpa is a bewildering experience that’s kind of fun but never in the way that’s intended. (February 28, 2021)

Dumb and Dumber To (2014)

20 years have passed since 1994’s Dumb and Dumber and THIS is the sequel we get?! No one was even asking for this movie in the first place, not after that Dumb and Dumberer so what compelled those involved? This picture is so bad it made me question whether or not that first film was any good (don’t worry, it is).

20 years after the events of the first film, Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) are on the road again, this time to find the daughter Harry didn't know he had until today. Without the kidney she can (hopefully) give him, he'll die. On the road, the two idiots have all kinds of comedic adventures.

You have certain expectations from a sequel made two decades after the first. As soon as Dumb and Dumber was a hit, the Farrelly brothers, and leads must've been approached by all kinds of executives to make a sequel, but they turned them down. I’m not going to say that I never laughed. Several jokes are well written and genuinely funny. They're crowded by plenty of old jokes that could've been in any comedy and have been thrown in here to fill pad the time. They don’t even have a good excuse for why it’s taken 20 years for this adventure to happen.

Even if you can look past the initial issue, the movie crumbles. The first movie works because the two protagonists are colossal morons, who despite everything manage ok for themselves. They've adapted to their idiocy but no one else has. Either your interactions with them have you walking away puzzled or accidentally defeated. This second crack at it crashlands in a fiery catastrophe. It simply isn’t funny when the duo passes through unbelievable scenarios, like Harry being asked to speak at a science exhibit. They're supposed to be the only stupid ones but the entire movie's I.Q. is so low it barely has the brains to be funny. Pouring a cold drink down someone’s pants? There’s no punchline there. It's not clever. When you have testicle jokes and the gag is that you SHOW the testicles, then you know you have hit rock-bottom. I don't know what attracted Kathleen Turner to this. If you're a fan of hers, just don't.

I went in with low expectations. That didn't stop me from giving it a chance. I really did. No one wants to sit and be miserable for 109 minutes. I wanted to laugh! Well, I chuckled a few times but mostly I sat there in silence until I had to pause the Dumb and Dumber To and scream inside a pillow to avoid disturbing everyone in the vicinity. If you make it past Lloyd's fantasy sequence, that's the lowest the film gets. It nearly broke me. If you can endure it, you might as well stay to the end where they do have a funny joke about the series' future. (On Blu-ray, March 13, 2015)
