Your OCs have been entrusted with a small child for a week (about 5 or so y/o). How does it go?
Thank you for the ask! This is interesting!
Rae: Oh, easy peasy. She grew up with sisters and cousins, she's taken care of more than a few small children in her life, it's a chaotic week just by nature but the kid and everyone else are just fine.
Robin: Also just fine. She grew up in an even bigger family than Rae, and she lives much closer to home than Rae does, so it's an even easier week for her.
Madison: Physically fine, but mentally draining. Madison isn't super fond of small children - she'll do her best to take care of the kid, probably with a lot of help from Charles and the others nearby, but is exhausted by the end of the week and definitely needs some recharge time.
Ophelia: Pretty good, though she doesn't seem to realize her own childhood was a little different than most children's. What do you mean, you can't just stick the kid with a book and leave them to be? She was practically reading novels at 5, and they entertained her for hours! Okay, what about this box of assorted-size washers from some corner of her lab, she'd have loved to sort through those as a kid! No?
Gia: I mean, she's a little ball of anxiety the whole time (but then again she's always a little ball of anxiety), but the kid is fine. If anything, Gia's a little overcautious, prepared to find a pediatrician for even the slightest sniffle, but Kate will definitely show up to help... and temper a little of that anxiety.
Jasper: Oh, totally fine. Might be tough to find things to entertain a small child in their apartment, but they've had to comfort kids through all manner of bumps, bruises, and bee stings, so a perfectly healthy 5-year-old should be fine enough. Hell, the animals will probably be enough entertainment for the little one - Columbia loves all things affection, Ruff is a little ball of energy to chase around, and Frankie's the type of dog that would let the kid just sprawl out on him without a care in the world.
Katherine: Great! They spend the week drawing pictures and visiting the park with "Uncle Jace" and "Auntie Emily", she makes sure the kid eats reasonably healthy and goes to bed on time, it's all great. Though Katherine does notice an uptick in the amount of cats that seem to follow her around...
Kestrel: Thank goodness they live near people who have actually raised kids before... Kestrel and Warren don't know much about it themselves, but Stan and Ruth will be more than happy to help, and Kestrel's role probably ends up being reduced to a few lullabies and some magically-enhanced entertainment.
Quinn: The kid probably thinks Quinn is the coolest thing in the world, while Quinn is just kinda... over it. Look, she's not gonna let the kid know she's losing her patience with all of this, but... it's probably best that someone take over before she loses her mind.
Eris: Surprisingly, is very good with kids! They know all the old wives' tales for soothing children, and remember that their moral code lies in the idea that all children should be allowed a chance to grow up and live their own future. Eris' entertainment methods are a little... unconventional, but the kid is fine.
Nikoletta: Ew. No. Pass. Kids are chaotic and unpredictable and always touching things, and she never knows how to find that balance between stern enough that they'll listen and so sharp they burst into tears. That conversation with Abner basically boils down to "I'll take care of dinner and the cats and all that, but please take care of the kid so I don't have to."
Jimmy: The bleeding chest wound scares the kid almost immediately, and Jimmy is instantly hurt and apologetic about it. Once the wound's calmed down a bit, less visible, he'd try again, and would be the type to tell stories to the kid. Someone else should probably take the lead, but he'll help where he can.
Vivienne: Let's not stick it with a child, how about that? I mean, she's had a few interactions with the captain's grandson, here and there, but aside from that, it's very unaccustomed to dealing with kids.

How to Maintain Hygiene in a Bottled Water Plant
In today’s fast-paced world, where access to clean drinking water is becoming increasingly important, the demand for bottled water continues to rise.
But with this growing demand comes a major responsibility—hygiene.

Whether you operate a packaged drinking water plant or a mineral water plant, maintaining high standards of hygiene is not just a legal requirement, it's a moral obligation to the health and safety of your customers.
Clean water can turn into a health hazard if the bottling process is not hygienically maintained.
Consumers trust your mineral water bottle for purity—so that’s exactly what you need to deliver every time.
In this blog, we'll break down the essential practices, tips, and guidelines to ensure your bottled water plant stays hygienic and safe.
1. Understand the Importance of Hygiene in Bottled Water Production
Let’s start with why hygiene matters so much.
Contaminated water, even after treatment, can become a source of illness if it's bottled or stored in unsanitary conditions.
Pathogens, bacteria, and chemical residues can infiltrate at any point—whether through unclean machinery, poor handling, or improper storage.
Maintaining hygiene not only ensures public safety but also protects your brand reputation and prevents expensive recalls or penalties from regulatory bodies.
2. Facility Design and Infrastructure
A hygienic plant starts with proper design. Here’s what to keep in mind:
Zoning:
Divide the facility into clean and non-clean areas. Water treatment and bottle filling zones must be strictly restricted.
Smooth Surfaces:
Walls and floors should be made of non-porous, easy-to-clean materials. Avoid cracks where mold or bacteria can grow.
Ventilation:
Install proper air filtration systems to avoid airborne contaminants.
Drainage:
Water should flow away from production areas. Poor drainage is a major hygiene hazard.
Pro Tip: If you’re consulting a mineral water plant manufacturer, ensure they help you design a layout that supports sanitary flow—from raw water entry to bottled product exit.
3. Equipment Sanitation
All machinery—whether it’s for RO purification, UV disinfection, or ozone dosing—must be regularly cleaned and sanitized.
Regular Cleaning Schedules:
Create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for cleaning each machine. Whether it’s the bottle washer, filler, capper, or labelling unit, each piece must be cleaned daily or weekly depending on usage.
Use Food-Grade Cleaners:
Avoid industrial chemicals that may leave residues. Use only certified, food-grade sanitizing solutions.
Maintenance Logs:
Keep a documented log of every cleaning and maintenance task for audits and compliance checks.
4. Staff Hygiene and Training
People are one of the most common sources of contamination in any production environment.
Uniforms and PPE:
Employees must wear clean uniforms, gloves, masks, and hairnets. Footwear should be exclusive to the production zone.
Hand washing Stations:
Install hand washing units at all entry points. Include soap, hand sanitizer, and disposable towels.
Staff Training:
Train your employees on personal hygiene, cross-contamination prevention, and equipment handling. Refresher sessions every 3-6 months are ideal.
Remember: In any mineral water plant, staff plays a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness. Empower them with knowledge.
5. Water Source and Pre-Treatment
Before even entering the bottling line, your raw water must go through stringent checks.
Source Quality:
Whether it’s borewell, municipal, or spring water, test the source regularly for chemical and biological contamination.
Laboratory Testing:
A well-equipped in-house lab or partnership with an accredited third-party lab can ensure water parameters are consistently within safe limits.
Filtration and Disinfection:
Use multi-stage purification methods: sand filter, carbon filter, RO (reverse osmosis), UV, and ozone. This not only enhances taste and purity but also meets BIS standards.
6. Bottle and Cap Hygiene
Often overlooked, bottles and caps can be a major source of contamination if not handled correctly.
Bottle Washing:
Whether you're using PET or glass, each bottle must be thoroughly cleaned before filling. Automatic rinsing machines using treated water and sanitizing agents are ideal.
Cap Sterilization:
Caps can carry microbes, especially if stored improperly. Use UV sterilizers or chemical sanitizers before capping the bottle.
Storage of Empty Containers:
Store bottles and caps in a dust-free, insect-proof room.
7. Filling and Packaging
This is where the product is most vulnerable. One small lapse can contaminate the entire batch.
Clean Room Environment:
Bottle filling areas must be sealed and maintained as sterile zones. Use laminar airflow cabinets if possible.
Automated Systems:
Minimize manual handling during filling, capping, and labeling to reduce contamination risk.
Temperature Control:
Maintain a cool and dry environment. High temperatures can breed bacteria, especially in sealed containers.
8. Pest Control and Waste Management
Uncontrolled waste and pests can destroy even the best hygiene practices.
Pest Control:
Implement regular pest control treatments through certified agencies. Keep detailed records.
Waste Segregation:
Separate recyclable, biodegradable, and hazardous waste. Ensure timely disposal of sludge, rejected water, and used filters.
Clean Environment:
Don’t just clean machines—clean floors, walls, storage racks, and air vents too.
9. Compliance with Government Regulations
In India, every mineral water plant must comply with BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) norms and FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) regulations.
Regular Inspections:
Schedule internal audits and be ready for surprise inspections from regulatory bodies.
Maintain Documentation:
Keep records of water tests, batch production, cleaning logs, staff training, and pest control for at least a year.
10. Quality Assurance and Final Testing
After bottling, before sending it to the market, test your water again.
Microbiological Testing:
Ensure no pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella, or coliforms are present.
Final Approval:
Send samples from each batch to an external lab for validation.
Storage Before Dispatch:
Keep finished bottles in a cool, dry, and dust-free storage room. Avoid direct sunlight.
Conclusion
Maintaining hygiene in a bottled water plant isn’t just about compliance—it’s about protecting your brand, your customers, and your peace of mind.
From sourcing water to delivering the final mineral water bottle to the end user, every step should reflect your commitment to quality.
Partnering with a reliable mineral water plant manufacturer can make this easier. The right supplier will not only help you with top-grade machinery but also guide you on plant layout, hygiene protocols, and compliance.
By following the best practices shared above, you can ensure that every bottle that rolls off your production line is a symbol of trust, purity, and care.
Are you planning to set up a new mineral water plant or upgrade your existing one?
Let's discuss how you can implement hygienic systems that are efficient and regulation-ready.

The Roles of Autoclaves and Washers
For ensuring the wellbeing and exact outcomes in a laboratory, disinfection, and sterilization of careful, clinical, and aggravating gear is important. In explore research centers, inappropriately cleaned or disinfected dish sets and instruments opens the way to undesirable harming substances. These harming items can cause harm to research center faculty by presentation to mutagenic or poisonous substances. Contamination can prompt incorrect test outcomes, risking understanding treatment regimens or conclusions in clinical labs. But in careful pharmaceutical offices, inappropriate cleansing of gear or aggravating arrangements can open patients to an extensive variety of organisms and endotoxins. Accordingly, the laboratories must create, report washing, and cleansing conventions that deliver solid outcomes and guarantee wellbeing.
According to a research lab, spending plans are spent on consumable items is of sixty percent. Other thirty percent of the aggregate spending plan is spent on dishes, plastic ware, and general lab supplies. In conclusion, the normal spending plan has diminished while the cost of consumable products has expanded. Thus, lately, research facility directors have pushed to move towards reusable merchandise to adjust this deficiency. Even though expendable plastic merchandise, instruments, and dish sets are a helpful alternative. Reusable products are similarly as successful and can diminish costs when sanitized and cleaned. These products have the additional advantage of lessening waste charges and transfer volumes.

The role of Lab Washers
A few research center gear producing organizations have created inventive answers for washing labware. Business and private dishwashers miss the mark in giving the thorough cleaning cycles expected to guarantee contaminants expulsion present in laboratories. Like if your dishwasher has an only a single pipe for the perfect and grimy water then it does not contain a channel water decontamination framework. In this way, harmful substances can invade the dishwasher. Specific research center washers are outfitted with double pumps and stringent filtration frameworks to guarantee of freeing from contaminants. And uses unrecycled water in the cleaning procedure.
The extraordinary state of research center exhibits an issue when utilizing traditional washers. Graduated barrels and numerous other labware items are molded to serve a specific capacity inside the laboratory. But home washers are not intended to give sufficient cleaning of these provisions. Numerous research center washers are equipped with shaft washers that bring water into labware that is narrow necked. At last, private washers warm the water in the range of 130ºF and 170 º F temperatures. This range of temperature is too low to enough sterilize reusable labware. The washers of the lab have a higher warming ability which is more powerful for sanitation. In this manner, the role of a lab washer is that it gives an incredible alternative to both decreasing uses on consumable products and guaranteeing clean supplies for ensuing utilization.
The operation of Autoclaves
The lab washer, Autoclaves utilizes a mix of high temperature and strain to clean an extensive variety of lab, clinical and instruments of pharmaceutics. Utilization of warm water and cleansers isn’t ineffective to slaughter some microbial contaminants. A vestige of organisms from past investigations can sully reagents and tests, prompting invalid results in sub-atomic, biochemical, and microbial research labs. The pharmaceutical and careful settings require cleaned instruments and intensify supplies to decrease the danger of contamination. Thus, this lab washer i.e.., autoclaves are utilized before washing for sanitization. They are produced in a scope of sizes, incorporating huge detached units with high-volumes or larger than average things. Minimized models of benchtop are utilized in careful and dental destinations. Autoclaves contain safeguard systems to ensure that adequate temperature and weight are accomplished for considering labware is sanitized after cycle completion.
Furthermore, numerous providers offer a change in colors, bacterial spore-containing pointers that assist specialists to decide whether a thing is cleaned. Putting natural pointers into this lab washer can include an extra layer of security to guarantee legitimate disinfection. Thus, guaranteeing legitimate activity of the Autoclave and Sterilization is basic, yet standard, day by day support is needed to guarantee quiet well-being.
Final Conclusion
Utilization of the two labware washers and autoclaves are profoundly suggested for clinical, pharmaceutical, and careful offices in the same way. Disinfecting and cleaning labware diminishes hazard to patients and guarantees tests of freeing contaminant. Laboratories can lessen uses by limiting the measure of single-utilize merchandise they will buy and related transfer expenses. Numerous lab washers are vitality proficient and highlight components to diminish water utilization. At the point, when it’s related to a decrease in plastic waste. These items give an ecologically benevolent alternative while keeping up the respectability of your investigations, systems, and made merchandise.

Betrayal
Aruani week 2020 - Day 2 - Betrayal
AO3 ~~
Pairings: Armin x Annie
Rating: Mature
Words count: 4223
Summary:
They met in an alley, a narrow, foul-smelling passageway, in the middle of a cold night
A few months later, he found himself walking to that place, the place where his life crumbled and was reborn, and just like last time, she was waiting for him.
a journey of lies and deception, desires and emotions

He walked down the street, one street-light bulb was flickering on and off with blips. Loud, tall buildings contouring both sides of the road, fluorescent squares of college students’ rooms queued in lines, inundating the moon’s light. The music gashing from cheap speakers leached out from the opened windows, belching ear-deafening tunes by another random mainstream singer, disturbing the serene night. The startling, overabundant alcohol aroma could be smelled from where he stood, mixed with a suspicious scent of sweat and other things he didn’t want to think about.
It was surreal how this exact same place, a few months ago, was vacant, deserted, abandoned enough to commit a crime and get away with it, a perfect place to find a victim bleeding to death.
He turned right and stepped into an alley, so narrow, invisible to anyone who didn’t know it existed, dumpsters crammed in crocked lines, a black cat jumped from one, sneering at the unwanted invader. A tiny circle of an igniting orange made him aware that he wasn’t alone, that yet again, she was here before him.
“You’re late,” she said, letting out a breath of smoke, he smelled strawberry, adding another aroma to the blend, this type of cigarettes that he never heard of before, with fruity flavors, masking these deathly pillars with sweet, sweet aromas, feigning a compelling innocence.
“I’m not, you’re just early,” he retorted, stepping towards her. Red cascades leaked through the cracks in the concrete walls, smearing the ground, his ears picked up the whiny voices of a victim, calling for help- he shook his head; the red and the voices vanished, he knew he was hallucinating, maybe depriving himself of sleep for the past three days finally exacerbated his senses, or maybe awakened old memories from the depths of his unconscious mind, memories that he tried to bury and forget they existed.
In the reflected light of the moon, he watched how her fingers delicately curled around the pillar of paper, her scarlet-drawn lips circling around the tip, before another cloud of fatal fumes left her lungs. The sting aroma of iron sliced through the air, red, thick moisture oozed from between her fingers and from her eyes, trickling down her pale cheeks before dripping onto the ground, mixing with the excess stench water of botched trash bags, its intense color fading.
He shook his head again, and the blood disappeared, the artificial-strawberry smoke infiltrating his nostrils. He forced his attention back on why he came here in the first place, he promised himself to finish the business, easy and quick.
She lobbed the burnt cigarette on the ground and stomped it with her leather boots, leaving it crinkled-dead on the ground as she took her time striding to him, her arms crossed, and her hips swaying.
He didn’t move, but his eyes caught the rim of her red and black checkered knee-length skirt move from side to side as she inched closer to him. If he doesn’t say anything, he will lose again to her, he will surrender to her touch and get lost in her eyes, so he greeted her: “Annie.”
“Ah, I see you’ve discovered my real name,” Annie mimicked, a smirk in her voice, even though her face was as stoic as a stone, “didn’t like Maddie? I thought it suited me.” She halted two steps away from him, looking straight into his eyes, the only resemblance between them, those ocean blue eyes.
“It wasn’t hard to know who you truly are, you’re not exactly secretive,” He was trying hard to not glance at her lips.
“I am, I am,” Annie contradicted, “you just did your homework of digging into files, or did you…” she took another step, close enough to feel his breath on her face, and she heard his heart racing in his chest, “or did a little friend of yours help you?”
“I don’t need help from anyone,” unlike you, he almost spat out, but he held himself from doing so, he still had a lot to glean out of her, one step at a time.
Annie raised an impressed eyebrow at him, with a fake preaching voice she praised: “Look at your smart ass, I wonder what else you know, you’re smarter than you let on,” She eyed him up and down, he was wearing a dark blue suit with the jacket on, even though it was a hot, humid summer night, but the upper buttons of his shirt were left undone, no tie to be seen.
“I’m a respected scientist.”
Annie hummed.
“I graduated from Harvard.” He added.
“Same goes for me.”
He snorted, an actual, authentic laugh, she was a professional liar, one who slipped lies as if they were nothing, she could concoct anecdotes that never existed, she could fathom a smile that was no different from a candid one, hiding her poisonous fangs behind her lips, she could cry tears of pain that she never went through, she could feign the role of a victim, lay on the ground in this same alley, drenched in her own blood, crying in soft, hurt moans, praying someone would peak into this unseen passageway. She would mistake a drunk man to be her knight in shining armor, or two college students whom hormones were out of control to be two angels who descended from heaven to save her.
Annie clicked her tongue and pouted: “Someone didn’t do their homework good.” She ran her tongue on the inside of her upper row of her white-pearl teeth, an apprehensive expression on her face, but he couldn’t tell if it was fake or real, “I remember you, you used to wear glasses.”
He froze, his heart skipped a beat and shuffled through the following three.
“You were always rushing from one class into the other, you must’ve had a busy schedule.”
He swallowed.
“No wonder we graduated in the same year, even though I’m a year older than you.”
He remembered, and he wished he didn’t.
He took a step backwards, this closeness to her made his mind buzz with timely-wrong thoughts, things he shouldn’t think about when he was in the presence of this woman.
He cleared his throat, he tapped the heels of his feet on the ground, shifting his weight from one foot to the other: “Technology? Really? Is that what you wasted four years studying?” he knew his words were in vain, he knew exactly why she majored in that, she was the living proof that computers will take over humanity in no time.
That a time will come when privacy will be a fantasy humans can only daydream about, that holding a phone is no different than holding a bomb, a place where all your info rests unbothered, until the delicate fingers of a hacker taps some keys in a remote place, and everything you once had, is gone.
Same goes for teenagers, business companies, doctors, or maybe a conservative, illegal lab.
“I missed my graduation,” Annie dodged his question, her head lolling to the side, her lower lip curling outward.
She’s faking hurt, again, he had to remind himself, otherwise he would trust her external emotions, “Let me guess, you were busy hacking into a bank or something?”
Annie gasped and put her hand on her chest, right above her heart: “How dare you?! I was beside my father before he died.”
“That’s a lie-”
“How can you be this heartless?”
The crack in her voice, the blip on the last syllable, all was an Oscar-worthy act.
She sniffled, though no tears were seen, before she shook her head and scrounged: “I thought you were the good person.”
For a moment, he wanted to strangle her throat and shake her until everything he needed to know was out of her, to shake off all this charade she was putting up, this charade that got worn out and had holes in it, or maybe it was already shredded from the beginning but he was too blind to see it. He blamed her hands, her soft touch, her moist lips, he blamed her, she was the one who blocked his vision, the one who blurred his world into a dizzy, vast rollercoaster loop, a never ending one.
But this was the end of this wild ride, and he was getting off of it soon enough.
Annie didn’t wait for an answer, she walked past him, but he was quick to react.
With one swift motion, he pushed her to the wall, slamming her back into it, she gasped, and before she could fight back, he held both her wrists above her head, “In a hurry to see Reiner and Bert?” he sneered through his teeth.
Even if it was swift, he glimpsed panic flash in her eyes, and he knew he hit a nerve.
“Looking for your next victim?” He hit the nerve again when he felt her pulse quicken underneath his grasp.
“Says whom? The one who plays with chemicals?”
For the first time since the beginning of the meeting, he heard her tone change dramatically; abhor soaking each syllable, her voice was choked behind her teeth, her breath was hot on his face.
“You can’t get enough, Arlert,” She seethed, venom dripping from her tongue when she said his name, hatred enveloped her first phrase.
Arlert rose his eyebrows, he was trying to keep his cool, to not lose it, so he focused on one thing: “You finally said my name, my real name that you knew from the start, from that night.”
That night, when he found her in this alley in a puddle of red, her limbs twisted in pain. He wanted to call 911, but she didn’t let him, she begged and pleaded with him to not call anyone, tears of implore mixing with tears of pain, merging with the trails of blood on her cheeks, before her eyes rolled to the back of her skull, and her body slackened against his own.
That night, he carried her home, he showered her in his bathtub, cleaned her cuts and washed dried blood off her cheeks and out of her hair, cleaned her clothes in his washer, and tucked her in his blankets, on his own bed.
“Huh,” Annie ’s voice brought him back from the far lane of his memories, “you’re used to being called Mr. Arlert, aren’t you? The way they call you at work.” her nose was pointing to the sky, “do they pay you enough?” she asked, “do they?”
“It’s rude to ask people how much they earn.”
“Or maybe it’s rude to ask people how much they get for altering humans’ genes?”
Her comment threw Arlert off, and in a second, their positions were switched; his back pressed into the wall, the ragged stone digging into his skin through the thick fabric of his suit.
His heart was beating against his ribcage, each beat sending painful jolts into his veins, and he finally saw the fang sticking out from beneath her smirk, that fang that she kept well hidden from him.
His knees shook under his weight that seemed to amplify under her glare, her hands on his shoulders screwing him in his place, and he wasn’t scared because she exposed him, he knew before-hand that she sneaked into each notch of his files and belongings, that she most likely memorized every substance in the countless drugs he made, the names of his crewmates, and the names of the hostages that were experimented on.
After all, one hostage must have meant something to her.
She had enough time to dive deep inside of him; to uncover every secret about him, she had four full months to do so, and she didn’t waste a minute of them.
She slept in his bed for these four months, had three meals on his dining table daily, she no longer was a guest, he got too accustomed to her presence that he couldn’t imagine how he managed to live on his own before.
But here he was, imprisoned in her cage-alike arms.
Annie glided down her hands down his chest, and even though she was no longer pining him down, he couldn’t get himself to move, to shift a limb, or unclench a finger from his clutched fists beside him.
She rubbed small circles on his shirt, watching how the fabric dented under her fingers, and she imagined them on his bare skin, trailing shapes on his chest, on his back, on his cheeks and running through his short, blond hair.
Beneath the shirt, thunder-shaped fire was kindled on his skin in the trace of her finger tips, the skin burned and charred, but he didn’t move, he didn’t run even after she pressed her thigh into his, and he felt a cold, hard thing pushing into his flesh.
Annie waited for a reaction, a flicker of an eyelid, a twitch of a lip, a quick breath, but nothing.
She smirked, so even after he knew she was armed, that she had a gun in her hand reach, he kept his I’m-cool act up, “You’ve got guts,” she said, not backing away from him, but she did lean her weight off of him.
Arlert almost breathed in relief; her body against him was making his already fucked up mind buzz with horrible thoughts that he shouldn’t be occupied with while his life was on stakes.
But he didn’t get to relish in it; Annie stepped on her toes and bent closer to his face, her hands resting on his shoulder once again, though this time her touch was soft, delicate, like a feather, and even though he knew it was hopeless, a tiny candle of hope was lit inside of him, a tiny farfetched wish that maybe, he could get her back to him.
The sirens in his mind belched and ordered him to turn his head away from her, to do something about her, to not surrender, but he was too frozen to oblige; and when Annie brushed her fingers against his lips, these sirens were too loud to comprehend what they were shouting anymore.
“You’re not running, you’re too used to it,” Annie looked into his eyes, and something flashed inside of them, a thing so intense, a thing that was her only fear. She escaped his gaze and averted her eyes, leaning towards the lob of his ear, a smirk pulled on her lips when she got a shudder from him, and she was itching to weaken him further, to make him crumble and bow to her, to melt him into a puddle underneath her feet and watch her reflection in it staring back at her.
She pressed her lips against his ear and whispered: “You got used to that.”
“Stop it.” Arlert teemed from between his teeth, his fists clutching tighter, he thought his fingers’ bones would crush under the pressure.
“You liked it when I called out your name,” she pressed her frame into his, her voice dropping lower, her cheek rubbing against his, “when I moaned your name-”
“Stop it.”
“In your bed.”
His back was as stiff as the stone behind it, the heel of his feet digging into the solid concrete ground beneath, his teeth gritting into a powder, and his breath was quick and shallow, his ears drumming each time his heart sent blood circulating in his veins.
His hands on his sides sweating and on fire, they were near the edge of sprouting up and engulfing her frame, to run them all over her back and in her hair, to feel his skin against her, her body arching into his, pressed into his, his fingers emitting notes from her that were music to his ears.
Just like that night.
“Armin,” Annie whispered, so low, her voice breathy, her fingers trailing down his neck, “Armin,” she planted an open-mouth kiss on his neck, and he trembled, “Armin,” her fingers reached the short hair of his undercut, “Armin.”
“Stop.”
She stopped.
But her hands on him lingered.
Armin, who squeezed his eyes shut, was trying to control his breathing, trying to slow it into a rhythmic melody, but it was impossible with Annie this close to him, he wanted her to step away from him, to let him breathe.
But he also didn’t want to let her go, if anything, he wanted to wipe that ridiculous red lipstick and break the tie holding her hair up in that small, tight bun, he wanted to repeat what he did the morning preceding that night, bring her breakfast in his bed, feed her with his hands, and listen to her story, pausing every now and then to wipe her tears with his fingers, until her tears were spent and her story was told.
He shook his head, all of it was a lie, he couldn’t let himself fall into that deep hole again, it took him long enough to pull himself out from it, it was all a lie.
Annie withdrew from Armin, and he couldn’t hold back a tiny sigh of relief, but when he opened his eyes, he wished he didn’t close them in the first place.
Her hair was down, and the blood-red lipstick was smeared around her lips in a failed attempt to wipe it off, leaving a trail of smudged red on her sleeve.
He really shouldn’t have closed his eyes, he shouldn’t have given her another chance to deceive him, to curl her snake-tail around the last bit of his senses.
When he looked into her eyes, they were dead, prosaic, and they didn’t suit her shoulder-length golden hair, her angel-sculpted face, these were the eyes of a criminal hunting the only good memory he had of her.
And he wanted to lurch his fingers into her eyes sockets and embowel them of these foreign eyes.
Without breaking eye contact, she reached beneath her knee-length skirt and pulled out the gun he felt a minute ago and pointed it right between his eyes.
“It was a pleasure meeting you,” Annie said, watching Armin’s eyes widen, the truth that he’s living his last moments sinking in.
Armin closed his eyes, feeling the cold metal pressing between his eyebrows, and counted.
One
Two
Three
Blue
Four
Soft
Six
Golden
No, five
Gracious
Seven
Eight
A click of a gun
Nine
“I really loved you that night,” she confessed.
Ten
The cold metal was no longer on his forehead, and when Armin opened his eyes, Annie was pointing the gun to the sky.
And the look in her eyes, a sad blue streaked by darker ocean-like hue, and maybe it was a trick of light, but he could swear he saw them glistening with tears.
“I really did,” She said, before she pulled the trigger, a wire shooting from the gun barrel, clutching into something above with a clink, and in a second, she was no longer standing in front of him.
A minute, five minutes, an hour, or maybe a couple, Armin lost track of time and sense, and he wasn’t snapped out of it until he heard the sirens of police echoing in the distance.
His legs were numb, and his throat was dry.
Armin walked out the alley the exact moment the cars pulled out next to it, he was tired, so tired, he just wanted to go back home and sleep for three days straight, but he knew he won’t be getting any rest for some time.
“Put your hands up!” A female voice commanded, and Armin acted like he was told.
Multiple uniformed police officers bolted out the car, one of them got closer to him, her gun already pointed at him, but the moment she got a clearer look at who he was, she dropped the gun and placed it in the waist belt she was wearing.
“What exactly happened in there? Are you ok?” She said, she gestured for the other police officers to go into the alley. Even though she was much taller than Armin, she had to bend her back to get a look at his tilted down face.
“I’m sorry, I failed, Mikasa,” Armin said, he finally looked up, his eyes looking straight into hers, and he didn’t realize that he probably looked like shit until he noticed her frowned eyebrows.
“We thought something bad happened to you,” Mikasa sighed, “the mic, we could no longer hear you and-”
“What?” Armin asked, his hands already reaching into the fold of his jacket’s collar, before his fingers touched the small circular device.
“We didn’t lose connection, but the sound suddenly got muffled and- oh.”
Mikasa got her answer as Armin held up the tiny, wireless device, now covered with dough-like substance.
“Shit,” Armin hissed and wrangled the tinkered-into-uselessness device to the ground, he ran his fingers over his sculp, tugging at the roots of his blonde hair, he turned around from Mikasa and huffed, not only did he fail to rat out Annie to the police, a wanted hacker that they couldn’t catch for years, but this hacker knew all about his plan from the very beginning.
She knew he was mic-ed, and she knew he was there to betray her.
Just like she betrayed him.
“What about the tracking device?” Mikasa inquired, crossing her arms.
“What about it?” Armin regretted the question the moment it left his mouth.
“You tell me, we found it two miles from here down the street, and we were in full panic mode because we had no idea the whereabout of you and her.”
“Oh…” Armin’s mind was short-circuiting with all the excuses he prepared for this question, but unlike when he first thought of them, now they sounded lame and unreal.
“Besides,” Mikasa took a step closer to him, looking around, making sure that her words were audible to only him, “what’s going on between you two?”
Answers rolled in his head one by one.
Lovers? No, too cheerful, too innocent.
Friends? Friends don’t strip you and fuck you senseless.
Enemies? That’s a strong term to describe what they had.
“I was behind her father’s death,” he didn’t choose to say it, nor did he think of it, it just slipped off his tongue.
Mikasa’s eyes widened, she blinked, and crooked her head to the side, as if waiting for Armin to tell her it was all a joke of some horrible sense of humor.
When he didn’t budge, she inched closer to him and whispered: “Does anyone know about it?”
Armin shook his head.
“Let’s keep it that way, you already have enough on your shoulders, and you breached our contract; you get her, we let you go, but if you don’t…” Mikasa sighed and pulled out the cuffs hanging from her waist, and Armin, without questioning it, held out his hands to her, “Armin Arlert, you’re under arrest for helping out a wanted criminal, and for illegal experiments in an unauthorized lab.”
Armin let out a slow, long breath; even though his life technically was over, and his career had turned into dust, a sense of relief washed over him.
All of it was over.
No more stressing out about being caught, no more pressure to keep working from the shadows.
He knew this would happen one day; he knew it too well.
It was just a matter of time.
Guilt gnawed at his stomach as he saw disappointment in Mikasa’s eyes, his childhood friend taking his hand and guiding him to prison, the place where he would most likely spend the rest of his life in.
How ironic.
She opened the passenger door of the police car for him, he got in and before she closed the door she whispered: “Don’t worry, I got you.”
Mikasa tapped on the car’s roof, and the wheels started spinning; Armin in the backseat, his hands cuffed, and a police officer taking him to wherever next was to happen to him.
Armin threw his head back and let out a groan, he fluttered his eyes shut, trying to let the events of this one night to sink in, this was all just a nightmare, an actual real life nightmare that he was trying to avoid it for the past nine years or more, but here he was in the back seat of a police car, alone, waiting for whatever the next days held for him-
Wait
He was alone.
In the backseat.
Who in hell would let someone under arrest alone in a car with just one police officer, who had their hands full with driving?
Armin looked into the rear mirror and was met with piercing blue eyes, already watching him.
Ones that were similar to his own eyes, but female features framed them.
Armin’s jaw opened; this nightmare was only getting ridiculous with each passing minute.
There was no way Annie Leonhart was in a police officer attire and driving this car.
But she took off the hat, flung it outside the window, and her golden locks flew around her face, and Armin wasn’t mistaken; it was her, and her only.
Annie put a shushing finger on her lips, before she turned her gaze back on the road.
Armin slanted back in the seat, took a deep breath, and closed his eyes.

THE SPIRIT BOX: Virgil Osborne is an ordinary man with an ordinary life. Him and his ex wife share custody of their young daughter, Vanessa, and it happens to be Virgil’s week to look after her. The father and daughter decide to play a game of hide and seek in Virgil’s new home- an old house he’d gotten for a steal, almost nothing, from his real estate agent. Vanessa finds a strange wooden box in the attic, where she was hiding, and hands it off to her father to take care of. When Vanessa leaves for her mother’s, Virgil opens the box, and is possessed by the spirit of someone who had been trapped inside for centuries. Vanessa and her mother begin to notice Virgil acting strange, and must try to figure out how to destroy the spirit within him, in order to save him, and themselves.
APEX SON: Set in the near future, something strange is going on on planet Earth, and Sampson J. Medina seems to be the only one to notice. It starts with strange headaches, and what he assumes are delusions. He sees his doctor and is prescribed medication after medication, but nothing seems to be working. Unsettling faces and unknown beings begin to reach out to him in unknown languages, and Sam begins to realize he can understand them. Now too afraid to leave his house, he must keep himself safe from these things he is sure are there to hurt him. Little does he know that he is one of them, and they are trying to bring him back home.
THE WANDERER: The knife is the glove box is for pleasure. Name unknown, the Wanderer travels to different towns, different cities, picks up men and women from bars, tracks down his prey, and kills them for fun. Can anyone stop him? Keep a watchful eye for him in the shadows- there’s nothing more deadly than a charming man.
WINSTON: His depression gets worse the longer he is alive. And unfortunately for Winston, he has burned bridges with nearly everyone who might be able to help him. It’s one night that he finds himself face to face with a drunken patron down an alley. The screaming that is pointed at Winston really pushed a button. With his dull pocket knife, he stabs the other man to death, and realizes shortly after, with blood on his hands, that he feels better. Happy, even. With a smile, Winston continues on to kill and kill and kill, to keep him happy and keep him smiling.
JEKYLL & HYDE: The classic tale- with a twist. Hyde Langford made money by participating in experiments. Some safe for humans, and some not. He found that they paid more for early stages of human testing, and so the man never questioned it. This experiment-named only Trial 629- would pay $5,000, and with the debt he was in with his landlord, there was really no way he could refuse. Perhaps he should have known it was a bad idea when he showed up and he was the only one there, but there were dollar signs in his eyes, and no reluctance to change into a doctor’s gown and wait for the test. He doesn’t remember most of it. The experiment will come in parts, but he feels fine in the following days. One morning, however, Hyde wakes up, hair still wet from a shower he doesn’t remember taking, to find bloodied and dirtied clothes left neatly in a laundry basket on top of the washer. Instances like these happen over and over. Hyde begins to see murders on the news, and he has dreams of himself killing people, that he now knows are a reality. Hyde seeks out the lab that has done the experiment, but finds no sign they were ever there. Now, Hyde must fight the lust-filled, bloodthirsty alter ego threatening to take over his mind and body, before it’s too late.
IT (CHAPTER 2): Richie Tozier never wanted to come back to the place he had forgotten was home. And as nice as it was to see his old friends, again- the Losers, that’s right; that’s what they called themselves- a sick and terrible feeling crawled up his throat. They weren't there to reunite- they were their to fight. And Richie wasn’t sure if he could face his childhood nightmares.

In For a Penny, In For a Pound - Chapter 2
On AO3
Stan had spent most of the morning puttering around on deck. Checking and double checking the tie downs for the anchor, fixing the guidewires for the antenna. Hell, he’d even mended the fishing net the seven-eyed shark had torn through two weeks back. Anything to avoid going below deck and facing his brother.
No matter what he did, no matter how many times he’d intentionally stuck his hand with a fishing hook, he just couldn’t get the memory out of his head.
It lingered on the edges of his mind, even now. The harsh breath, the throaty moans.
Stan flicked his eyes to the cabin window to check if he was alone before he adjusted himself, pausing a second too long to run the palm of his hand over the seam of his jeans. He wasn’t hard, not exactly, he couldn’t get hard again so soon after, not like he used to. But he’d been at half-mast since he’d scrambled out of the bathroom that morning and yanked his coffee cup out of Ford’ hand. The kicked puppy look Ford had given him certainly had done him no favors. Stan figured he deserved the burnt tongue he’d gotten from the scalding liquid when he’d guzzled the cup down.
He hadn’t even bothered to venture down to get something to eat when lunch time rolled around. His stomach grumbled at him as it digested air and bland coffee. But the thought of food made him queasy. And he wasn't ready to face Ford just yet. He could hardly think about his brother without his mind pulling up the memory from last might.
What’s even worse, was that he’d indulged in it. Instead of just leaving it a it was, he’d actually gotten off with the image of his twin in his mind. There was no way he could get around that. No way he could deny it. No amount of logic could make this ok. Knowing Ford, he’d try to write it off as some sort of psychology mumbo jumbo. At least…Stan thinks he would. He honestly doesn’t know what Ford would do.
Oh, GOD! What would Ford do if he found out? Suddenly, that kicked puppy look from this morning twisted into one of anger and disgust. Ford would leave. Or he would ask Stan to leave. They’d sail to the nearest port and Ford would leave him there. He’d lose his brother again. Third time’s the charm. This time it would be for good.
Stan’s fingers faltered over the knot he was tying in the ropes. His brother would leave. Everything he’d worked for would disappear. Ford would tell the kids. The kid’s parents would keep him from ever seeing to talking to them again. He couldn’t go back to Gravity Falls. Soos…god. What would Soos think of him? Soos had spent his entire adolescence looking up to Stan. Not that Stan was the best of role models, but Soos had forgiven much of Stan’s lackluster history. There was no way he would forgive this. If this fell apart, Stan didn’t even have the Mystery Shack to go back to. If this got out, it was all over. He would lose everything. He’d go back to living in his car under a shitty overpass. Back to the ‘nameless grifter’.
But it wouldn’t. He wouldn’t say anything. And he wouldn’t let this change anything. Stan was an old hat at ignoring his feelings. He could ignore this. He would just find some babe at the next port they stopped at to get his rocks off and this would go away. Everything would go back to normal. It was going to be okay. He’d claim that he was feeling off and needed some space to lick his proverbial wounds in peace. That was it. Ford would buy that. Stan always had a habit of hiding when he was hurt or bothered by something. It wasn't that abnormal. Yeah. He could play this off.
Stan took a breath and threw down the net he’d been working on. He needed to make amends. He could do this. Stan rose from the deck chair he had molded into over the past few hours. It was going on three in the afternoon. And he’d skipped lunch. Knowing his brother, Ford hadn’t eaten anything either. Man would go days without eating, subsisting on only coffee if someone didn’t shove food in front of his face. It had been a real problem through highschool. Stan had gotten into the habit of packing both of their lunches, making sure to cut the crusts of Ford’s sandwich everytime. Stan would usually find Ford tucked away in the library or studyhall and would drag him to the roof so they could eat together. On days Ford had resisted, they’d find a quiet corner in the library and eat there. Stan wondered how well Ford had taken care of himself in college.
Well, no time like the present to make amends. But his feet wouldn’t cooperate. He paced over to the railing to lean on it. They were listing off the north coast of Ireland. Ford was following some school of fish with toes on the end of their fins. Stan had caught one back near Iceland and they had been following them for the last week or so. Something about migration patterns or whatever. Stan didn’t pay much attention to his brother’s weird anomalies unless it was dangerous. He’d gotten enough of mundane weirdness in Gravity Falls.
It was pretty clear for November on the Atlantic. Sky partly cloudy with hints of sunlight peeking out from behind the fluffy grey wisps. It was a stupid dream of his, but when he was young and was laying on the beach with his brother, he’d always imagined flying up to the clouds to curl up in their softness. Being surrounded by the soft, puffy white cotton. He still imagined doing it, even all these years later. He knew that the clouds weren’t actually soft like cotton. He knew they really looked like fog up close, but he could still dream.
Stan sighed, closing his eyes and breathing in the crisp sea air. Alright. No more dawdling. He was a grown man. He could push his feelings aside to go and make up with his brother. He slapped the railing twice and walked over to the cabin door. Pushing it open, he could hear the beeps and boops from Ford’s computer array, the lights and screens flickering with sonar and radio printouts. The table pushed against the far wall was strewn with books and notes and maps. Ford had made the effort to keep record of everything they came across in their travels. He stayed up at all hours of the night to record his thoughts and experiments. He even went so far as to sneak a flashlight and notebook to bed. Stan a banned all notetaking in bed when they had to throw out a set of sheets when Ford’s pen had leaked all over.
That was another thing he was going to have to worry about. There wasn’t much in the way of clothes washing out in the middle of the ocean. They had a hot water tank and a crank washer in the engine compartment turned lab. He could always wait until they made port to do his laundry, but he didn’t fancy sleeping on a bare mattress for however long it took Ford to make up his mind about landfall. He hadn’t even bothered to check how bad the mess in his sheets was. Too busy having a moral crisis over his sexuality to even consider cleaning up.
Stan hoped Ford had left well enough alone, but he doubts it.
When he took the steps down to the galley, Stan was met with an empty room. Sink filled with two coffee mugs and a plate with crumbs. Table strewn with books and papers and a laptop computer sat open on Ford’s side of the booth. The bathroom was also empty, save for a stray pair of folded socks that Stan had missed putting on this morning. The bulkhead to the lab was closed and locked. Stan assumed that there wasn't much of a reason to check. Nothing but the low thrum of the modified engine (courtesy of McGucket and his brilliant engineering) and the mess of beakers and lab specimens Ford had saved.
Nothing left to check but their bedroom. Separated from the rest of the galley by a thin curtain, the bow of the ship housed two beds on either wall. Storage and footlockers the the far wall. Sure enough, when Stan hesitantly pushed the red weighted cloth aside, he caught sight of Ford napping in his bunk. Ford’s glasses were askew and resting on his forehead. A book was perched between Ford’s loose fingers and his nose. He was wearing a black t-shirt with a coral V-neck sweater pulled over it; forgoing the life-vest in favor of comfort. He wasn't snoring yet, so it was likely he’d only just dozed off.
Stan stood in the doorway, arm lifting the heavy curtain, and just looked. Mainly because he could. It still took him by surprise, even now, looking at his brother. That he was really there. That he was real. That those thirty years hadn’t been a waste. That the past summer hadn’t been a hallucination brought on by grief. Ford was real. He was safe. He was home. And Stan still marveled at that fact.
His eyes followed the line of Ford’s jaw not blocked by the book propped up by his nose. Swept over the creases at the corners of his eyes and over the faint scars on his fingers. Fluffy gray hair in disarray from sleep. Stan was filled with an alarming sense of affection. His chest swelled with it until he felt like it would burst. His brother was adorable. No other word for it. Stan’s adorable nerd brother. A soft smile worked its way onto Stan’s face. He’d work through whatever this was and they would go back to how it should be.
Stan eased into the room, letting the curtain swing closed behind him. He stooped over Ford’s bunk and pulled the book from his brother’s loose grasp. Ford’s hand twitched. A sharp inhale cut through the quiet room, and Ford’s eyes cracked open.
“Wha’sat? Oh. Stan. Mnh. Time issit?”
“Good morning to you too, sleepyhead. ‘Bout four. You eat yet?” Stan dog-eared the open page and closed the book to set it aside. He didn’t bother rummaging around for a bookmark. Ford mumbled something unintelligible and sat up, looking disoriented. He patted the mattress and the collar of his shirt looking for his glasses. Stan gave him another soft smile full of affection before reaching over and sliding them down over Ford’s eyes.
“Wha’ ah. Thanks. Ah…I had some toast this morning. And coffee.” Ford was fully awake now, sitting up straight and blinking up at Stan. Ford was analyzing him. Stan could practically see the lines of code running through his brother’s brain, cataloging every tick and minute detail. Stan hated it.
“So that’d be a ‘no’. Alright, how about I make fish tacos. Think we have some cheese and tortillas left. You said the ‘toe fish’ are edible and the freezer is full of the things.” Stan was trying to make amends. That didn’t mean he was ready to address the issue, but that he was willing to move past it. He really hoped Ford took the hint.
Ford adjusted his glasses, still peering up at Stan with a quizzical look on his face. “Ah, Yes. They are. Reasonably anyway. I haven’t tasted them yet, but I also haven’t detected any harmful compounds during my dissections either. My guess is that they simply are a phenotypic mutation resulting from over-development of the carpel…Stan!”
Stan snorted, pretending to wake up from loud and overdramatic snores. “Huh? Wha’? Sorry, Sixer, nerdtalk always makes me sleepy.” He grinned as Ford frowned and rolled his eyes. “Anyway, I’ll go start cookin’. You do whatever nerd things you do when I’m not around.”
Stan turned to leave the room again when he noticed the sheets on his bed were missing. The Comforter and bare pillow were neatly folded and placed in the center of the mattress, but the sheets and pillowcase were gone. Stan froze. He hadn’t cleaned-up, so the only other person who could have was now fidgeting behind him. This really wasn’t something he wanted to deal with. Sure, when they had been teenagers and it was laundry day, they’d tease eachother for having crusty sheets, but they weren’t sixteen anymore. And discussing it, even flippantly, was far too close to things Stan really wasn't wanting to deal with.
Ford’s hand fell in an awkward pat on his shoulder. “Hey. It’s fine. It’s actually a good sign. Men our age tend not to have the same vigor we do.” Ford chuckled, but it petered out quickly. The air between them practically tingled with awkward tension. Flashes from his morning fantasy changed the tone of Ford’s words. Made them more suggestive. He really needed to get out of the room and put some distance between them. Stan shrugged off Ford’s hand. “Heh, yeah. Thanks…uh. Sixer. I…um…I appreciate it. Sorry fer this morning.”
“Not a problem. I tossed out the leftovers from yesterday. But I don’t feel ill. How are you feeling now?” Ford was in his space, leaning in to scrutinize his face. Stan held his breath, feeling heat migrate to his cheeks. Ford pressed a cool hand to his heated forehead and frowned. “A bit warm. And you’re flushed. You really shouldn’t have been outside all day.” Six fingered hands drifted over his neck, gently palpitating his lymphnodes. Stan’s mind rang with an echoed moan and a phantom hand wrapped around his hardening dick. NOPE!
Stan took a step back, shaking his head and pushing Ford’s hands away from him. ‘I’m fine, Sixer. Damn! Just some indigestion. It happens. I’ll take care of the sheets after I cook dinner, Jeezus!” Ford flinched, drawing his hands to his chest. That kicked puppy look was back, but Stan wasn't in the mood to pet him and stroke his bruised ego. Ford was a grown man; he could deal with it. Stan flipped open the curtain and strode into the galley, fully intent on shoving all of this Freudian bullshit down under several layers of repression. He pushed up his sleeves and opened their little freezer to pull out two freaky toe fish. “Want anything else, or jus’ the tacos? Don’t know what we got left. Should make port soon, ‘less you wanna eat fish all the time.”
Ford followed after, hesitant and watchful. “Just tacos are fine. I think we have some instant guacamole in the back of the pantry.”
Stan groaned. “Eugh, instant. Remind me again why I chose to forgo modern conveniences to rough it on the water, again?” But there was no venom behind it. He’d already prepped their little oven to bake the fish, hacking away at the fins and doing his best to wedge the knife into the frozen flesh. He probably should have just thrown then in the oven to thaw, but he was impatient.
Ford grinned, feeling lighter now that the tension from before seemed to have dissipated. “Because I asked you to.” He passed by Stan to the sink to wash out their mugs, and filled the stovetop kettle.
“Yeah, and why on Earth would I do what a nerdbrain extraordinaire says?” Stan smiles, even as he tears out the goopy and slimy fish guts to toss in their chum bucket. Things felt light. Felt right. He could do this. This was how it was supposed to be between them. Easy and teasing. Just them being bros and living the high life on the high seas looking for treasure and babes. Definitely, definitely babes. And soon. Maybe a siren or a mermaid. Hell, he’d settle for a harpy if they could find one. He just needed to get this out of his system.
“Because you love me.” Ford nudged his arm, jostling Stan’s side.
Stan’s hands stuttered on the fish, narrowly avoiding slicing into his hand. “Heh. I dunno about that. ‘Love’ is a girly word fit for teenagers and woman pinning after Benedict Cumberbatch. Not for Pines men. But eh, I like ya well enough”
“Benedict Who?”
“Oh man. I forget you haven’t been around. Next time we call the kids, ask Mabel about him. He’s an actor she’s nuts over. Tall and lanky fella. Looks kinda like an alien.”
They both dissolved into laughter as the Stan O’ War II rode the waves of the North Atlantic.

32 Days Since Titan
So, here’s the finished fic I was working on before I saw Endgame. I’ve done a little tweaking, but it’s canon compliant. Still working through my feelings, this helped a little...
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18601774
Thirty Two Days...
It’s been thirty-two days since Titan. Nine since Tony Stark returned to Earth, and the Avengers compound, half dead, starving, and dangerously dehydrated. Three days since he was released from medical. He isn’t up to full strength yet, and tires easily; which is how he’s found himself waking up from yet another nightmare, this time on his sofa. Part of him wants to blame Pepper, for being so blunt and telling him he needs to face his feelings, honor Peter, not hide the memory of him away.
Leave it to Pepper, to hit him with the hard truth — Lord knows she’s the only one he will listen to, even though he won’t always admit it. Ever since he’s returned to some semblance of health, he’s been trying to “forget” the kid, well avoid really, he doesn’t think he can ever forget. He hasn’t returned to his lab, because he knows he’d see the last thing he and Peter were working on — the kid’s unfinished project spread across his designated table.
Tony is desperately trying to hold on to what he does have left — Pepper, Rhodey, the remaining Avengers — though he’s kept the latter at a safe distance, not interacting with them much after their brief reunion. He thinks maybe if he focuses on the things he does have, he’ll be able to have a life, make things better for the people who are left.
Tonight though... well, Pepper, aided by a couple glasses of wine, managed to get Tony to talk. He told her every horrid detail. Fessed up to his feelings of total inadequacy, how he was so desperate to hold on to what he did have left — her, Rhodey, Happy — that he didn’t dare think about how he might fix things, bring them all back. He didn’t think he had it in him to face another loss, another failure — because losing again might mean losing Pepper and he couldn’t do that. Ever.
Tony pushes himself into a seated position, elbows on his knees, head in hands, and tries to catch his breath. God he was getting sick of this — Peter (and Thanos) haunting his dreams. He must have fallen asleep soon after Pepper left him to stew in his thoughts.
It was a variation of the same nightmare that has been haunting him since he left that god forsaken, hell hole of a planet, with Nebula. This time they were at Peter’s graduation party. They were all having a good time, Pepper with their future baby. May, Happy, everyone there bursting with pride for Peter and celebrating the momentous occasion. And then like every nightmare since that day on Titan Tony hears a quiet, “Mr. Stark…” When he turns to find Peter, he watches helplessly as every single person disintegrates, turning to dust. The plates of food and drinks fall, the sounds of shattering porcelain and glass echoing as they hit the floor, mixing with the dust — leaving Tony alone and screaming in horror.
Tony squeezes his eyes shut, “It’s just a dream. Just a dream.” He says it out loud to reassure himself, trying to get his breathing under control, trying to stave off a panic attack. He hates this. With a trembling hand, he wipes the sweat from his forehead and stands up. He needs a drink.
The wine glasses and bottle from earlier are on the counter, where Pepper left them. It’s not quite the potency he needs, but there’s still some Malbec left in the bottle. He pours himself half a glass and downs it quickly.
After a few minutes, when the tremors in his hands lessen — he decides to start cleaning up the kitchen, to give himself something else to think about. Tony’s focus on the mundane task slowly work to calm him. He takes his time washing the stemware and cheese plates. He is careful and precise as he dries each dish, before putting them away. He throws away the empty wine bottle and wipes down the counter, just like he'd seen Pepper do. Satisfied with the now spotless kitchen he notices the wine opener still sitting out. He opens several drawers, trying to remember where it’s supposed to go. He really wishes Pepper would stop rearranging the kitchen, he can never find anything.
Opening the third drawer, which he quickly realizes is a junk/mail drawer he spots a rectangular object. He pulls out a black 5x7 picture frame and flips it over. His grip tightens and his eyes get a little cloudy when he sees the photo of him and Peter, each throwing up bunny ears behind the other’s head.
Tony remembers the day clearly, nearly eight months ago...
———
Sometime in early August 2017
Tony’s phone dings several times in a row, notifying him of incoming text messages. He picks it up with a scowl, there is only one person that would blow up his phone this early in the morning. “I’m beginning to regret giving the kid my number.” He grumbles to Pepper, who's sitting in the stool next to him at their kitchen island. “I haven’t even finished my first cup of coffee.”
Pepper rolls her eyes, as she finishes her last bite of yogurt, “Oh please, you love the attention.”
“I do not,” He scoffs. Opening the phone he scrolls through the texts. “Pepper, this kid — he wants to know what I’m wearing!”
Pepper laughs and stands up, picking up her bowl. She pauses on the way to the sink to kiss him on the cheek, “So, tell him. He’s just excited, Tony. Today is a big deal for our interns. I thought you were all about encouraging young minds.”
“Uh, yeah, in the abstract, hands off, pat on the back, move along sense. Not this, teenage — tell me what you’re wearing to the dance — nonsense.”
“Oh stop being such a grump and just tell him. He adores you, Tony. Peter’s just nervous and wants to make a good impression.”
And God did that statement terrify him. Tony Stark was not meant to be a role-model or adored — especially by young, impressionable teenage minds. He was a fuck-up of monumental proportions and he was certainly not cut out for this. He was fumbling through this mentorship and terrified of messing up.
“Fine. I’ll tell him, but know that I am doing so under extreme duress.”
Pepper poured herself another cup off coffee, ignoring his dramatics, she says sweetly, “Yes, dear, whatever you say.”
Tony shoots her a disapproving glare, letting her know he does not appreciate her sass. He types out a quick text.
A black cotton t-shirt and gray sweat pants. You?
A few seconds pass, before Peter’s reply comes through. Hahaha… I MEAN for the luncheon today!
Tony taps out a reply, a mischievous smile on his face. God, he loves teasing this kid. Oooh…dress is formal. I’m wearing a tux.
Uhh, would you believe my tux is still at the cleaners? ? 😳😳😳
Oh well, guess you’ll have to skip it then. Very strict dress code. NO EXCEPTIONS.
The reply from Peter is immediate, Dang, guess I’ll let Aunt May know… she’s going to be so disappointed. 😿
Oh? Don’t want to disappoint Aunt Hottie. Guess we can make an exception, this once... Dress is business casual. I’m wearing jeans, T-shirt, blazer.
Haha, thanks Mr. Stark! I think I can pull something like that together. Happy is picking us up? 10:30?
Yup. See you soon. Tony replies.
Clicking the screen off he sets the phone on the counter and looks to Pepper, who is putting the dishes in the washer. “How long does this thing last, again?”
“I think a couple hours. I usually only stay to finish lunch, which is longer than your usual 30 minute drop-in, slash meet and greet.”
“Okay. Maybe I’ll stay for lunch, too. You know, inspire and encourage those bright young minds.”
“They’ll love that, Tony. Everyone is always so excited when you make an appearance. And it's a really good group of kids.”
Pepper walks around the counter and wraps her arms around his shoulders, pressing a soft kiss to his right temple, she says, “I’ll see you in a couple hours. Don’t be late.”
“Uhh, I’m never late!”
“Hmm, I literally have documented hundreds of missed appointments, engagements, and appearances over the last twenty years that say otherwise, but sure, Hon, you’re never late.” Pepper pats him fondly on the back and leans over to pick up her purse sitting on an empty barstool. As she makes her way to the door, she says, “FRIDAY, remind Mr. Stark to be out the door by eleven. Luncheon starts at noon.”
The AI responds with an obedient, “Yes, Miss Potts, I’ll make sure boss doesn’t forget.”
“That’s so not necessary — I can tell time!” Tony yells in protest, to her retreating back.
“See you in a few hours.” Pepper replies, as the doors to the penthouse elevator doors close.
“FRIDAY, remind me to get ready at 9:45.”
"Yes, boss."
The luncheon is held at Stark Industries offices in Mid-town Manhattan. For once, Tony is ten minutes early. When he saunters into Pepper's office, to escort her downstairs — he makes sure to point this fact out to her.
High School and College-age interns from every applicable department, and two of their guests, are treated to a catered lunch, presented with certificates of participation. The more outstanding interns of each department are recognized with their own official Stark Internship plaques. The afternoon also includes a quick meet and greet with CTO Tony Stark and CEO Pepper Potts, both of whom give a short speech to the attendees and present the awards.
Tony is just a little pleased to see Peter is given special recognition by the Science and Technologies Department. He had decided that Peter should officially join the high school summer internship program, get the kid some real world experience to add to his college applications. Somewhat to his surprise, the kid had jumped at the chance, offering little protest to the proposal, even though it might take away some time from his patrols. Maybe it was because Peter knew that Spider-man is never going to pay the bills, and perhaps, he really did take Tony’s advice to heart.
Tony tried his best not to show favoritism and mostly left Peter under the tutelage of the department’s internship program head. He would never admit to anyone, that he may have, discreetly, checked up on him multiple times a month. And he can’t say he didn’t, occasionally, pull him away for some ‘special assignments’ in his private lab — days spent working on their own projects and consuming copious amounts of pizza. And maybe, just maybe, he brags a little to Pepper when he reads a glowing review from Peter’s supervisor. Yeah, he’s man enough to admit — the kid is doing him proud.
The luncheon passes without a hitch. The awards are handed out, photos are snapped, and Tony gives his off the cuff speech, a mixture of humor and inspiration for the future. Pepper gives her brief introduction and a message about how important Stark Industries views the Internship programs and all their young bright minds. Most years Tony ducks out after the speech and certificate presentations, but this time he stays for lunch, while Pepper takes the opportunity to get back to her office.
Tony assembles a plate of food and makes his way to where he sees Peter sitting with his Aunt, and to his surprise, Happy, plus a couple interns and their parents. He tries to ignore the shocked faces of the other interns when he approaches the table, “This seat taken?”
Peter raises his eyebrows in surprise, “Uh, yeah. I mean, no, all yours, Mr. Stark. I mean, of course it is because you own them—”
Peter stops his nervous rambling at the pointed look Tony sends him. He wonders if the kid will ever not be nervous around him. He sets down his plate and sits in the empty chair next to Peter. He is mildly amused to see Peter wearing a corduroy sport coat, jeans, and a black t-shirt, nearly matching Tony’s own sartorial choices. He says a quick hello to everyone at the table and tries to give them his attention. He’ll never admit he relishes just sitting next to the kid and spending a little more time with him, sharing this day, celebrating his accomplishment.
The longer he sits the more relaxed Peter gets, even cracking a few jokes at Tony’s expense. Something he never would have done a few months ago. He doesn’t miss the way some of the parents, and teens, at the table look between the two of them, surprised by their easy banter and familiarity.
Lunch soon finished, Tony lingers for a little longer — taking more pictures with the interns and their familes. It’s well into mid-afternoon, when he tries to make his exit. He and Pepper have dinner reservations and he needs to get some work done before then.
Before he goes, May Parker pulls him aside. “Tony, would you mind me getting a picture of you and Peter, before you go?”
“Anything, for you Mrs. Parker.” Tony replies, giving her his most charming smile.
Handing his own phone to Happy, who for some reason, which he’ll have to investigate later, is still hanging around, he says, “Take a couple for me too, Hap.”
Tony throws an arm around Peter, who has his award in hand -- at May's insistence -- and pulls him in close. They smile and take multiple pictures with the award, both getting increasingly irreverent, much to May’s amused frustration. Peter even tries to sneak bunny ears — “Bunny ears? Wow, you are a nerd!” Tony teases, while throwing up two fingers behind Peter.
When Tony does finally leave, he is all smiles, with an extra swagger in his step. He’s not sure when spending time with the kid became so important to him and he’s a little frightened by the implications.
The sound of bare feet on the hardwood floor, pulls him out of his memories. He looks up to see Pepper wrapped in her robe, her hair askew from sleep — it’s nearly one in the morning, way past her usual bedtime.
“Tony? Are you coming to bed?“ Pepper asks worriedly from the threshold of the living room. She hesitates when she sees him and steps forward cautiously, into the kitchen. “Hey, you okay?”
He watches her walk toward him, feeling lost and overwhelmed with sadness. He thought he could move on, he told himself he could, but he knows now that he was lying to himself. This isn’t something he can just shove in a drawer, like the picture. He loved that kid and no amount of denial will lessen the pain he feels over his loss.
“Hey…” Pepper’s hand is on his cheek, wiping something wet from under his eye. She takes the picture from his hands and wraps one arm around his waist, holding it for both of them to see. “I forgot about this… It arrived the day you left. There was a card…”
She reaches into the drawer and pulls out a bright red envelope addressed to “Mr. Tony Stark”. She hands it to him, the envelope already open.
He opens the card and sees Peter’s sloppy scrawl:
Dear Mr. Stark, Thank you for everything you do for me. The Stark Internship made my summer and I cannot express how grateful I am for the opportunity. I know how "excited" you were to come to the luncheon and I thought you should have something to remember it by. Sincerely your biggest fan, Peter
The card blurs and Tony tries to blink away the threatening tears. He drops the card beside the photo and pulls Pepper into a tight hug, burying his face into her shoulder. “I miss him,” he whispers. “He was such a good kid... and I didn't, couldn't —“
Pepper runs a soothing hand down his back, feeling the outline of his ribs, he's still so skinny. “I know. You did everything you could, Tony. I know that, he knew it… and he knew how much you cared for him. Believe me, he did.”
And Tony does know it. He could see it in the way the kid looked at him, the glint of awe in his eyes, that always made him a little uncomfortable because he didn’t know what to do with that kind of admiration. It kills him a little more to know he may never see that look again. He lets the tears fall freely this time, wrapping both arms around Pepper, holding her closer, clinging to one person he still has left…
Epilogue
The next morning he wakes up to find Pepper already gone from their bed. After his momentary panic, he remembers she had several meetings planned for the first half of the day. He stumbles groggily into the kitchen, seeking espresso and a bite to eat — he’s still feeling as tired and worn as he did the night before.
He’s well into his first cup of espresso, and the breakfast smoothie Pepper left in the refrigerator, when he sees it. The picture of him and Peter is propped up on the counter, next to one of him and Pepper. He’s tempted to put back in the drawer, but he tries to recall what Pepper said, about remembering and honoring. Moving on, but not forgetting because Peter Parker is not to be forgotten. Peter Park is loved.

Different Uses for Huge Plastic Pegboards Inside Your Laboratory
When speaking about pegboards, lots of people consider a hardware retail store with islands of devices. Yet pegboards carry out a lot more than simply serve as mounting aspects for hooks as well as for tool screen. Pegboards can be found in different styles, as well as provide on their own to lots of uses. In reality, they're the perfect addition to a lab!
Every laboratory needs to be arranged, so you can easily situate your devices when you need all of them. Though utilizing storage space compartments is actually an choice, they are actually rarely adjustable. Prior to going out to look for epoxy substance pegboards, check out further to discover just how huge plastic pegboards could be used inside your laboratory.
Various Forms Of Pegboard
There are actually three main classifications of pegboards: lightweight responsibility, strong, and also specialized.
Lightweight role pegboards are actually 1/4 inch strong hardboard. They are not the most sturdy as well as are most effectively used to hold toys, light fixtures, as well as household furniture.
Meanwhile, durable pegboards are constructed from galvanized metallic sheets as well as are capable of sustaining massive tools around two times their weight. These are actually commonly found in equipment retail stores and also manufacturing plants.
Lastly, specialty pegboards are actually created coming from polypropylene or even Epoxy Resin Pegboards. Such products produce specialty pegboards waterproof. Consequently, they are the most ideal alternative for regularly damp locations including home kitchens, shower rooms, and laboratories.

Just How to Mount Pegboard Walls
Pegboards are actually astonishingly extremely versatile enhancements to any workplace. Thankfully, pegboard installment is actually also simple to do it yourself.
1. Result in your wall structure
Prior to installing a pegboard on your wall surface, first program where you will place it. Solution your pegboard and also measure your wall.
2. Install furring strips
When mounting pegboards, mount furring bits to put some area in between the pegboard and also the wall surface for connecting hangers.
To put in furring bits, secure all of them horizontally throughout the wall surface and area one degree on best. Screw the hair bits into the wall structure studs or wall anchors.
3. Screw the pegboard right into the furring strips.
When the furring strips are actually put up, elevate the pegboard over the wall structure.
