For my assignment I have taken inspiration from Roos Mattaar’s quotes from her Skwigly interview where she states “sometimes there are issues with the puppet and some scenes are more difficult to animate because I am fighting the puppet”.
I have decided to make a stop motion animation based on this quote where the shot is looking down at a workspace where a puppet is being made and the puppet is somewhat alive and begins to defy what the creator is doing to make it look like the puppet and creator are fighting over what happens.

Today I focused on starting my part of the group presentation work. I did some research into puppet making and the processes that go into it, I watched this video about the way that Laika make their puppets:
youtube
This was a really interesting look into how a large scale production of puppet making works, there are different teams for sculpting, armatures, costumes and hair who all work together to create a single puppet for a Laika film. The attention to detail is incredibly important and the initial character design sketches will heavily influence the final outcome of the puppet.
I also started looking into artists and practitioners who I might try and contact, I found a puppet fabricator called Roos Mattaar who has worked on some big budget films such as ‘Isle of Dogs’ and ‘Early Man’ as a freelancer and armature builder but also does a lot of work for smaller clients where she completes full puppet fabrication on her own. I thought that it might be a really good idea to ask her about the difference between making a puppet as part of a team versus making one completely on your own. Her Mothman puppet is my favourite if her puppets and I was really interested in the process pictures she posted on her blog:

CCC - research - Roos Mattaar
I decided that my next step for this project will be to move away from 2D work and create a 3D set to continue my experimentation. Whilst I was researching miniature sets and getting some ideas on how I could construct them, I came across stop-motion artist and set designer Roos Mattaar. She creates small sets which act as backdrops for her animations, using multiple materials such as plywood and metal. Although creating a set this detailed and intricate won’t be possible in the timescale that I have for this project, I would like to make a set of a living room or bedroom to experiment with ‘screen lighting’ and the concept of time passing.

I began looking further into Roos Mattaar’s creative process on her website and an interview with skwigly;
Puppet Fabrication
“I love working with my hands and exploring new materials.  I am particularly interested in the technical side and problem solving that is involved in the creation of puppets for animation”.
Worked for three months as a puppet trainee in the armature department at Mackinnon & Saunders in Manchester. - involved resin casting to create fibreglass resin hollow cores for puppet heads and torsos.
“With most of the recent projects I have been animating puppets that I had also built. That already is useful because I know the puppets well. It also works the other way around: sometimes there are issues with the puppet and some scenes are more difficult to animate because i am fighting the puppet”.
Miniature Sets/Props
"When I started out making films in live action as a teenager, I wanted to create worlds on screen that do not exist in everyday life”
She did not have the space to build these live size sets so she shrunk down her sets to create stop motion animations where she could have more control and be more ambitious with her sets.
Moonbird
Her first experience with ball and socket armature.
The film itself combined live action and animation and the full set attic was in a smaller scale which called for a lot of composting to put everything together for her final film.
Learned lots of different skills from this film which helped her get jobs later on.
Music Videos
“the music itself becomes a great guide for the animation”.
Process
Roos builds the puppets first and does not finish all of the set building before starting shooting and instead puts things in front of the camera and builds whatever is needed when it is needed.
Arranges things for the camera to see what works so that she only makes whats necessary and then she can see where to add the details.

I made a quick mood board based on Roos Mattaar and the basic research I have done on her.  I included her where she lived as a child and Bristol, where she moved for University. I also included imagery from her sets for her film “Moonbird” and different sets from other projects.  I included a few of her puppets too.
If I am going to do my assignment on Roos I would like to do it as a stop motion animation as it relates to her work and is something I am interested in.

I looked at this interview on skwigly with Roos Mattaar and was drawn to her work due to my increasing interest in stop motion animation from working in the rostrum.
Roos grew up in the Netherlands where she would build puppets and sets in her bedroom.  Roos eventually moved to the UK to study at the UWE Bristol School of Animation where she graduated with 1st class honours and her graduation film “Moonbird” won the Royal Televison Society West of England Student Animation Award and her graduation film was screened at many festivals around the world.
vimeo
After University, Roos went on to work on films such as, Early Man, Postman Pat, and Isle of Dogs.
I like Roos’s work as I am interested and enjoy her set building due to my background in set building for Performance from A-Levels and would like to carry on building on this skill throughout this module and I would be able to do this if I use Roos as my animator for my assignment.
I am also interested in her puppet building and would like to get into creating characters this way.

Today my group had a meeting with Helen to check on our progress for the media roles presentation. Me and Jenny expressed our concerns about feeling that some group members might not be pulling their weight. We discussed this and decided to speak to the group and give a date by which we want all the information for the slides to be sent to Jenny in order for her to create the presentation with time for us to have some practice runs of the presentation.
With regards to my research, I have now put together a draft of the information for my first two slides of the presentation and I just need to write up the research for the final part (on the history of puppet fabrication) and send my questions to Roos Mattaar. I will try and do this early next week so I have some time to proofread before I send all the research and bibliography to Jenny.
