Guildenstern affectionately refers to Rosencrantz as “Rose” and only uses Ros’s full name when he’s angry with him.

what if nothing we did changed anything (what if we had the power to change everything). what if I forgot how to be myself (what if I only remembered you). what if none of it mattered (what if we were the only things that mattered). what if it was inevitable (what if it was all our fault). what if I couldn't live without you (what if I ached with the weight of two souls overlapping). what if we were already dead (what if we never existed in the first place). what if I forgot my own name (what if I gave you mine).

re: my previous post, i think if you were to stage a version of ros & guil are dead and wanted to highlight the "they're stuck in a time loop because that's the nature of theater (in the modern day)" thing at the end, the best way to do it would be to have the last thing be the messenger's voice coming from offstage, calling ros and guil's names and telling them they've been summoned by the king of denmark. don't show ros and guil waking up, but have that be the obvious implication; that after all this, they don't get to rest, because they have a long journey — the same long journey — ahead of them — again.

I feel like Guildenstern is an often misunderstood character. A pet peeve of mine is that when an actor plays him without nuance he comes across as just mean, which is not him. He gets nippy and frustrated with Rosencrantz sometimes but at his core he cares for him. He cares for everything a bit too much. He wants to solve the world around him but he can’t. He talks himself in circles, useless exercises of logic, trying to discern the direction of the wind just to feel he has some grasp on what’s going on around him. His theorizing is a fool’s errand, but an element that’s often missed is that he enjoys it. He theorizes because it soothes his confusion and because it’s how he has fun. Guildenstern at his best is playful and a little dorky and just trying to do what he thinks is best.

i need to rewatch rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead to draw up the connections between it and dead boy detectives. the edwin and charles of it all has a Lot in common with guildenstern and rosencrantz, just on a different skew
