This has been in the works forever and I finally finished it! Ugh lol comics what can you do, anyways I absolutely love this fanfic, it’s legit one of my go tos when I have bad times. The Koopalings had an impressive airship, though it didn't compare to Bowser's old warship in size and scale. It was, however, large enough to come equipped with a prison– lacking the suspended cages and lava pits that Luigi was familiar with, but equally unwelcoming... cold, cramped, dirty and unsettling dark.

Mario and Luigi's captors hadn't come to conquer kingdoms, their only mission was to bring The Super Mario Brothers back to The Dark Lands in chains. Whether they were to be used as a bargaining chip or Bowser wanted the satisfaction of killing them himself, Luigi could only guess. The moment Bowser's young minions stopped squabbling and worked together as a unit, Luigi and Mario were quickly overwhelmed. The additional troops they had brought along overtook them the moment they fell, pulling them apart and dragging them away. That was the last time Luigi saw his brother before he woke up in a squalid cell.

If there was one bright side, it was that Luigi had learned how to pick locks since the last time he was captured. It took him about twenty minutes to work the door mechanisms free bit by bit, hiding his smuggled lock pick within the inner lining of his hat whenever a koopa or goomba wandered by.

When Luigi's cell door finally swung open he pumped his fist in the air victoriously, but he wasn't ready to pat himself on the back just yet. He was not safe by any means, and he still had to figure out what happened to Mario.

Luigi moved as swiftly and silently as possible down the murky hallway, keeping an ear out for guards while calling his brother's name, which echoed off the stone walls of vacant cells. Luigi began to worry that, besides the guards, he was the only one being held in that prison. What would that mean? Was Mario was being held elsewhere? Was he hurt? Was he being hurt? With these morbid thoughts plaguing his mind, Luigi could barely keep himself from letting out a cry of relief when he finally found his brother at the furthest end of the prison, where the bars on the cell walls were thicker and the doors had extra locks. Two goombas were positioned outside his cage, and before they could react Luigi took them out with two firm stomps. Before throwing them in a neighboring cell he searched them over for keys. Unfortunately, neither of them had been trusted with such a privilege.

"Luigi!" Mario called out in a voice that was subdued, but brimming with pride. After Luigi looked his brother over and determined he was unharmed beyond a few scrapes and bruises, he went right to work trying to open the cell door.

"Luigi, don't." Mario whispered, "There's no time."

Luigi didn't look up from the lock, not wanting to admit that his brother was right. Even if his own jailbreak hadn't already raised alarms, the usual patrol was certain to show up at any second. The locks on Mario's cell were more sturdy and numerous than they were on Luigi's cell, and Mario's ankle had been chained to the center of the floor for good measure. Clearly they weren't taking any chances with him.

"I can't just leave you here."

"You won't. You aren't." Mario assured as he rushed to the edge of the cage, stopping just short of the bars as he felt the chain connected to his ankle grow taut. "We're an hour away from The Darklands, that gives you an hour to escape and figure out a plan."

"I don't want–... I can't." Despite his argument, Luigi submitted to his brother's instruction, struggling to hold back tears as he returned the lock pick to his hat. "What if something happens to you?"

"Hey, c'mere." Mario strained against his ankle as far as he could, nearly falling over as he reached through the narrow gaps in the bars and took hold of his brother's shoulders. He drew him into as much of a hug as he could manage, the brims of their hats and the tips of their forehead pressing together.

"You're smart, I'm tough. You'll find a way out, and I'll get by like I always do." Mario assured quietly. "We're the Super Mario Brothers, aren't we? Just because we're working apart doesn't mean we ain't working together."

Luigi nodded, reaching through the bars to return the embrace. He suppressed a whimper as he squeezed his eyes shut and pressed himself further into the edge of his brother's cell, his hands gripping at Mario's arms in an attempt to hug him tighter. Mario was the first to hear the oncoming commotion rumbling down the hallways; stern voices and thundering footsteps. He yanked himself out of the hug, though he kept one hand clasped to his little brother's wrist. "Alright, now go show them who's number one." He spoke with a lighthearted tone, giving Luigi's hand a small squeeze before finally releasing him altogether. Luigi forced a smile. He opened his mouth to give a quip of his own– something cheerful– but with his window of escape rapidly narrowing he whispered a hurried "I love you bro" before he turned on his heels and took off running.

"I love you too." Mario breathed out, though he was now out of earshot. He finally allowed himself to wear his nervousness clearly as a flood of guards rushed by his cell in pursuit of his escaping brother. "Please be okay."

11. Do you have a comfort item? Tell us about it!

At first I wanted to say no, but I suppose these two little guys are that for me:

I'm not much of a plush collector. Other than these, I only have one Kakashi plush I got from my sister as a teen and it still has a place on my bookshelf above all the mangas. But I'm glad I got myself these two. I like that they're posable and have plastic heads, which makes them nicely weighted, so if I put one or both of them on my chest it gives a small illusion of a hug. Kinda like a small weighted blanket😊 And they're wonderful sleeping companions, too. If I wake up in the middle of the night after a bad dream or feeling anxious or even simply hot, I like to hug them and put my forehead against their cool plastic heads. Works great.

Yes yes, I'm a grown man sleeping with plushies that could very well be called dolls, and you cannot stop me, haha😆

15. Comfort food?

Ah, now you're speaking my language😋 Some examples of my comfort foods include chicken noodle soup, spaghetti bolognese and dark chocolate.

21. Tea, coffee, or hot cocoa?

Yes. Hehe, I like them all, especially tea and coffee. Out of the three, I definitely drink tea of different kinds most often, while hot cocoa is a treat I only have every once in a while.

25. If your soul was a color, what would it be?

Ah, this question... It's like one of these random personality quizzes, huh?😆 I have no idea! I don't even necessarily believe in the existence of such a thing as a soul, but I suppose that's beside the point lol. My favorite colors are red and green (I know what it sounds like, but I swear it's a coincidence!), but would it make one of them the color of my soul?🤔 Not sure. A classmate once told me I was giving her an orange vibe as she was picking a marker for me to borrow, so maybe orange? I also once had a friend who was super into the supernatural and spiritual stuff and who said that my "aura" was white, whatever that means - so maybe white, then?🤷‍♂️ You might as well pick a color for me lol

Luigi taking care of Mario

One of the many things I love about how Luigi and his relationship with Mario besides how physically affectionate and loving they are towards each other (I think we all know my thoughts on that 😆) is in the little ways he takes care of Mario.

Mario takes care of Luigi by protecting him as big brothers often do, but Luigi’s are in the moments where he brings Mario food after the dinner scene (something he did to make Mario feel better, cuz comfort food), and at the end of the movie where he brings him coffee in the morning.

It’s why I say that he channels that a lot of that from his mother. She’s such a positive influence on his life that he naturally wants to do the same thing towards the other most important person in his life. He wants to be there for his brother, show him how much he loves him and the way he best feels that he can is by channeling his mother influence by cooking, bring Mario things and just being emotionally supportive.

We all know the iconic Smash bros scene with Septhiroth nearly killing Mario and everyone’s reactions being freaked out/a mini heart attack.

But surly other fighters (Peach and Luigi maybe 😏) saw Mario almost getting impaled by Septhiroth. I can imagine they needed a lot of comfort and reassurance from Mario after that fake-out death. Mario probably still in shock. 😅

Can someone who’s good at writing PLEASE write a fic about this?! Even if it’s short? Thank you. 🥰😛

And it’s so cute and beautiful?? Like oh my god?? 🥺🥺🥺 I love the color scheme you chose for this! I think it fits really well with the cold, overcast atmosphere and the peace and tenderness the bros share together in the moment, as well as the melancholy that follows soon after. I also really love the snow here and how it softly coats their beanies and gathers on the bench. It makes me kinda miss the winter season ngl (and it’s not even summer yet 😅) The way Mario gazes down at the scarf with his lil’ smile and the way Luigi looks at him 🥺🥺 And them leaning on each other 🥺🥹 Seeing this in art-form is truly precious and amazing! You captured their emotions and the setting perfectly! 😍🤩🥰
