We are now in Elul as we prepare our hearts for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur
ROSH CHODESH ELUL: "I AM MY BELOVED'S"
Thursday evening begins the second day of Rosh Chodesh and the first day of the new month of Elul. The word Elul in Hebrew, אלול, is an acronym of the verse - "אני לדודי ודודי לי - I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine," from Song of Songs 6:3. The verse, which describes belonging and connection and fidelity and love between Israel and HaShem, is the perfect description for the month of Elul, whose essence is that of drawing close to HaShem, renewing and reinvigorating our love and dedication to HaShem, and working on making ourselves worthy receptacles of HaShem's love and light.
Chodesh tov - have a very good month of Elul!

Rosh Chodesh Elul: An Affinity Healing Circle for Non-Men
Led by Rachel Abrams (she/her)
Thursday August 20 @ 7:30 PM EST
Sign up here! (It’s free!)
Description below
Legend has it that at Mount Sinai, the matriarchs of our tradition were gifted with an extra day each month to take off from work, engage in study, and celebrate each other’s fabulosity and friendship. This sacred day is called Rosh Chodesh, the first of the Hebrew month.
Let's reclaim this ancient practice together in a radically loving and radically inclusive, supportive online space for women and non-men to celebrate a new lunar cycle and the Hebrew month of Elul!
Join Rachel for an intimate evening learning about the origins of Rosh Chodesh, connecting with new friends, and reflecting on Jewish themes in the month of Elul.
We will prepare our souls and our hearts with loving care for the coming High Holy Days, and begin to build a foundation for our Rosh Chodesh ritual to continue each month.
Please bring a candle with you for our Zoom ritual.
*While the origins of Rosh Chodesh rituals center female bodies and menstruation, we aim to create a space that is welcoming for people of all bodies and all gender identities/expressions who find meaning in the holiday!

Chodesh Adar tov! • God who made the sun, also made the moon. The moon does not take away from the brilliance of the sun. All its light is reflected from the sun. The Blessed Mother reflects her Divine Son; without Him, she is nothing. With Him, she is the Mother of men. ~Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen ❤️💛💙 • This beautiful tradition of first fruits at the first full moon each month is not only Biblical but it’s also one our Lord, Blessed Joseph, and His Mother would’ve kept. I often wonder if she ever pondered her connection to it. Her son the first fruit, she herself becomes a sign like the moon in the heavens to signal the appointed times. Today, many Jews recite the “Blessing of the New Moon” on this minor feast each month. It is one of the few blessings recited outdoors under the canopy of God’s creation rather than inside the synagogue. • In fact, it is not the moon that is blessed or sanctified, but God who is praised for renewing the moon, with the following blessing (Sanhedrin 42a): “Praised are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who created (bara’) the skies with his word, and all heaven’s host with the breath of his mouth. He gave them appointed times and roles, and they never miss their cues, doing their Creator’s (konam) bidding with gladness and joy. He is the true creator (po’el) who acts faithfully, and he has told the moon to renew itself. It is a BEAUTIFUL CROWN for the people carried by God from birth (Israel), who will likewise be renewed in the future in order to proclaim the beauty of their creator (yotsram) for his glorious majesty. Praised are you, O Lord, who renews new moons.” #WomanInTheMoon #RoshChodesh #Adar2020 #SaintWisdom #FultonSheen #saints #MeditationsWithSaints #wakingEve #OurLadyofNotreDame #moonrise https://www.instagram.com/p/B9ATvSagaN-/?igshid=13my3flhpi48f

I love love love books that remind us, and teach our children, that the Jewish Diaspora spans many countries and incorporates at least as many different traditions. In "Hanukkah Moon" (2007) by author Deborah da Costa and illustrator Gosia Mosz, Isobel goes to celebrate with her Aunt Luisa, recently arrived from Mexico. Incorporated beautifully into the story are both touches of Sephardic/Spanish holiday traditions, and a wonderful narrative about Rosh Chodesh (the new month), a time that in Judaism is particularly given over to women in celebration, and the "luna nueva" or new moon, that occurs each year during Chanukah. If you're looking to learn something new about Chanukah, this is the book for you! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #jewishnoodlenuts #noodlenutschanukah #hanukkahmoon #deborahdacosta #gosiamosz #felizjanuca #januca #janucasameaj #roshchodesh #lunadenieve #sephardic #sephardi #sefardi #mexicanjew #spanishjew #jewishwomen #jewishwoman #judaism #holidaybooks #holidaysaroundtheworld #teachersofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Oc0I5HC3x/?igshid=1iw6z9cq6y9pg

If they make a movie Davening [praying] in Airports I'll be in line. White privilege: no one looks at me. Today is #July4& also #RoshChodesh, the start of a new month. I say Hallel, the collection of Psalms celebrating special days. "You freed my bonds." "I called from depths." And a specially long psalm to end the prayers of the day, mentioning the blessing of food. "Bread satisfies people's hearts." Wine, oil and bread. The basics #migrants look for. What our cruel government denies them in the camps. New month, new possibilities for change, Exoduses. #SomosMigrantes #Jewish #prayer #immigrants https://www.instagram.com/p/BzfckKKhVMj/?igshid=mcwb3cpxfxqx

“Our body is like a dependable sailing ship, a robust vessel in which we plough through the waters of life. In order to withstand unscathed the inevitable storms and doldrums, there is a need, as we have already amply demonstrated, for a certain measure of maintenance and care. In this part of the book we wish to answer the question of how to make our houses and dwellings - the ship’s masts that hold the sails for our journey through life, as Khalil Gibran poetically expresses it - into health-giving and solidly built areas, spaces which give us strength rather than costing us strength.” ~ Moon Time, The Art of Harmony with Nature and Lunar Cycles👌🏼👌🏼 . . Healing, helpful, precious oils bask in the sun/new moon/supermoon eclipse.
