NJCS 2024 Round One Eliminated Contestants (Part 2/2)
Lamb Chop Status: Transitive Jew Thank you Shari Lewis for my favorite “THEY’RE JEWISH?” moment of the 2024 bracket! Just check out the holiday specials for Hannukah and Pesach, available for free in full on Youtube. Reason enough to get your dogs some Lamb Chop toys this year, I think.
Betty Boop Status: Practically Canon Jew Boop-oop-de-doop! Betty Boop, our first Black, Jewish, female president. All hail the chief!
Dina (TLoU 2) Status: Canon Jew I feel like I would have been best friends with Dina if we went to Hebrew School together.
Coraline Jones Status: Canon Jew
Tumblr media
Yes, this is an official still from the Coraline movie! She’d already qualify from the transitive property thanks to our good ol’ Tumblr friend Neil Gaiman, but this quantifiable, proof positive evidence of Coraline’s Judaism is really nice to see. Thank you, LAIKA Studios!
Philip J. Fry Status: Coded Jew He’s a man displaced out of time, reunited with his distant descendant in a future New York unfamiliar to him. Sound familiar? And of course, we can’t forget Farnsworth’s iconic moments in the time travel episode “The Late Philip J. Fry”.
Davey Jacobs Status: Canon Jew Dunno what else I can say about this mensch that isn’t mentioned in his character bio from official audition material for the musical… God, I love Newsies.
Tumblr media
“Go and look it up, the poor GUY’S head is spinning!”
Yasmin (Bratz) Status: Transitive Jew Just like Barbie, the Bratz dolls have Jewish roots! Created by Isaac Larian in 2000, and adored by his tween daughter Jasmin, we can extra-hard claim the doll that was named in her honor. Yasmin might not have a specified ethnicity within Bratz canon, but the Sephardic roots of her namesake is proof enough for me. Even her Ken equivalent is textually Jewish (his name’s Eitan!) Just like Barbie, though, it seems this tournament might not be the friendliest environment for the plastic pop culture icons. Don’t worry ladies, I see you!
Paris Geller Status: Canon Jew Textually Jewish, Transitively Jewish (by way of Liza Weil)… she has it all!

Vocaloid Tourney Submissions Results and Preliminaries Info
56 out of 64 spots in the bracket have been filled. List of advancing songs is below the cut.
For the preliminaries, there are 86* songs competing for 8 open spots in the bracket. (again, full list below)
The prelims will be structured as follows:
Part A: *2 songs - a mini pre-preliminary round of sorts between two versions of "Play" by shr - the original Kagamine Rin version vs an UTAU cover featuring Matusdappoiyo, since both versions were submitted. The Winner of this round will participate in part B. (One day long)
Part B: 85 songs - 17 matches of 5 songs, with 1 winner each. I will be releasing 3 or 4 matches every other day to stagger them. Winners of part B will move on to part C. (16 days long)
Part C: 17 songs - 2 matches of 8/9 songs, each with the top 4 songs advancing. Both matches will be released the same day (One week long)
if anyone has any objections to this, or any better ideas, lemme know now, bc that was the best I could come up with. I didnt want the first round of matches to be between too many songs at once, as I felt that would probably be less accurate, and more intimidating so less people would listen to all the songs....... idk
Part A will be up TOMORROW, SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4TH, and will only last one day, bc I want to get to the actual prelims. More information on the rest of the prelims will be up during the week.
List of songs advancing to the bracket or preliminaries below the cut:

Bracket is all set for the Hot Vintage TV women’s tournament! First polls go up tomorrow, Monday April 15th!
All round 1 polls will be tagged #tv ladies 1 and with the actresses in the poll.
I’m gonna try and schedule the posts if possible. There are 64 polls in round 1 and I’m planning to spread them out over the week so expect about 10 polls a day with the final 4 on Sunday. Two of the polls are 3 ways to get us down to a nice even number and avoid 3 ways for the subsequent rounds. Probably won’t get polls up till mid afternoon my time so if you don’t see anything in the morning don’t worry they’re coming!
Apologies in advance if you find your fav in a tough match up. I did my best to balance things out trying to match people on at least some level while avoiding as many big match ups this early as I could and also trying to avoid clear landslide match ups where I could to give us a chance at some variety in later rounds. We have a pretty stacked list of ladies so it was tough trying to find reasonable pairings. I did my best though and had some friends and family give input and tweak things but it won’t be perfect. Still I hope it is fun and enjoyable regardless!
See y’all tomorrow!

A Glance Forward
This round, L8, will end on Saturday the 21st.
Round L9 should start that same day. It will feature the four winners of L8 in two polls.
We will finally return to the winners bracket with W5 (the winners semifinals) on probably Sunday the 22nd.
You can expect the next round (L10) on Sunday the 29th after the end of W5 or Monday the 30th. It will match up the two winners of L9 vs the two losers of W5.
This is, of course, assuming there are no tiebreakers. If there are, move the dates back one day for each round in which there is a tiebreaker.
That's all I have for now.
Oh, and make sure to solve the bonus puzzle!

IDW Sonic Showdown 2023: Version 2 - Pause Game Edition
Tumblr media
After a tough battle for his victory, Tails is ready to head home with the title of IDW Sonic Showdown Champion 2023. But what's this? It looks like Whisper, Tangle, Dr. Starline, Belle, Jewel, Lanolin and many others aren't ready to give up yet! Well, that can only mean that it's time for…
Tumblr media
IDW Sonic Showdown 2023: Version 2 - Pause Game Edition
In this version of the tournament, only the characters created for the IDW Sonic Comics will be included in the line-up. The above image is what we'll be using for the brackets if there are no objections to this line-up. Should all go to plan, Round One will be posted on Sunday 2nd April
A few of notes about this line-up:
There are 32 IDW Exclusive characters in the line-up. While this doesn't include absolutely everyone, I did try to include the majority of named characters
There is one currently unnamed character, "Chief Mechanic", because he had a somewhat prominent speaking role in a scene with Belle (if any IDW officials somehow manage to see this and want to Word of God me his name, that would be very welcome :D)
This time around, not every Scrapnik has been included, but I did include Sigma, the trio of Egg-Robos and most of the Scrapniks who did well in the first tournament, like Nevin and Carina
I thought about it a lot, but decided not to include Mecha Sonic or Mecha Knuckles, as they feel more directly based on their game counterparts than most of the other Scrapniks. I'm sorry if this is upsetting for some :( Please do speak up if you really, really want them to be included, but I would need to take out two other characters to fit them in or do a couple of threeway polls (which would probably be against other Scrapniks)
Full list of characters and matches below:

Free Pattern for you
Happy Sunday, all! I recently typed out the pattern I used to make my Nano Hulk. It’s the same as the knit-along, but without the pictures and probably more legible. (I’ve learned more about writing out patterns since then.) You can find the knit-along series by searching for #nanohulk. Please let me know if you spot mistakes or confusing bits. I’m glad to help.
The Nano Other Guy Pattern
Materials and Tools:
Fingering weight yarn in:
Green
Black for eyes, mouth, and hair (for the hair, you can use worsted weight to save time and for a fuzzier hairdo)
Brown (or other color for trousers)
Small amount of polyester stuffing
2.5 mm double pointed needles (or two circular needles) for knitting in the round
Darning needle
Crochet hook
Gauge:
Since this is not a garment, gauge is not as important. The fabric should be tight enough that the stuffing won’t show through – about 9 stitches per inch. If you decide to use worsted weight, I recommend 3.25 mm needles.
 Abbreviations:
BO = bind off
CO = cast on
inc = increase into next stitch (I usually use RLI – right lifted increase or LLI - left lifted increase, but any increase method should be fine. I have marked in [brackets] where I would put RLI or LLI.
k = knit
k2tog = knit two together
kfb = knit through front and back
p = purl
R = Round
ssk = slip 1, slip 1, knit slipped stitches together
sts = stitches
 Instructions:
Feet:
CO 18 sts
Divide to work in the round.
Round 1: Join and knit
R2: Kfb every stitch (36 sts)
R3-5: Knit 3 rounds
Start foot shaping:
R6: K1, ssk, k6, k2tog 3 times, k6, ssk 3 times, k6, k2tog, k1 (28 sts)
R7: K7, k2tog twice, k6, ssk twice, k7 (24 sts)
R8: K7, k2tog twice, k2, ssk twice, k7 (20 sts)
R9: K6, k2tog twice, ssk twice, k6 (16 sts)
R10: K1, ssk, k1, k2tog, k4, ssk, k1, k2tog, k1 (12 sts)
Start leg:
R11-14: Knit 4 rounds
R15: k1, inc [RLI], k10, inc [LLI], k1 (14 sts) [My preferred increase is RLI or LLI, but any increase should work.]
R16: Knit
R17: K2, inc [RLI], k10, inc [LLI], k2 (16 sts)
R18-23: Knit 6 rounds
Break yarn and place on holders. Knit another leg.
Body:
Redistribute the live stitches at the top of each leg onto the needles so the legs are side by side, and you have 8 stitches in front and 8 in back.
Round 1: Starting in the middle of the back, join yarn and knit 1 round to join legs. (32sts)
R2: K6, k2tog, ssk, k12, k2tog, ssk, k6 (28 sts)
R3-8: Knit 6 rounds
R9: K3, inc [RLI], k22, inc [LLI], k3 (30 sts)
R10-11: Knit 2 rounds
R12: K4, inc [RLI], k8, inc [LLI], k6, inc [RLI], k8, inc [LLI], k4 (34 sts)
R13-14: Knit 2 rounds
R15: K4, inc [RLI], k10, inc [LLI], k6, inc [RLI], k10, inc [LLI], k4 (38 sts)
R16-20: Knit 5 rounds
R21: K4, k2tog 6 times, k6, k2tog 6 times, k4 (26 sts)
I usually sew up the bottom of the feet and crotch here. You can also stuff the legs.
 Head:
Round 1-6: Knit 6 rounds
R7: (k1, kfb, kfb) 8 times, k2 (42 sts)
R8-25: Knit 18 rounds
R26: (k2, k2tog) 10 times, k2 (32 sts)
R27: Knit
R28: (k1, k2tog) 10 times, k2 (22 sts)
R29: k2tog 11 times (11 sts)
Break yarn and thread through stitches, leaving a longish tail for sewing up. Finish stuffing the head, body, and legs. Pull tight and fasten off.
Make his neck by running yarn through stitches on the third round below the increases for the head. Pull the yarn to make a neck and fasten off. No need to make this super tight.
Arms:
CO 12
Round 1: Join and knit
R2: Kfb every stitch (24 sts)
R3-8: Knit 6 rounds

Break the yarn, thread through the remaining stitches, stuff and fasten off. Make an identical second arm.
Making up: Sew the arms to the body by pinning the arms to the body. Using a darning needle, pass a strand of yarn through the shoulder of one arm, though the body, and into the other arm. Go back and forth two or three times, then fasten off, hiding the ends in the body. Now is also a good time to make a little green stitch for a belly button.
Eyes and mouth:
Mark eyes with pins about halfway up Nano Hulk’s face with 4 stitches between each pin. Once you have them in the right place, embroider the eyes and mouth by using whatever technique works. I usually do three simple stitches for each eye and chain stitch a mouth. Don’t forget the eyebrows!
Ear: (Knit flat)
CO 4
Knit 5 rows of stocking stitch.
BO
Make 2.
Fold the ears in half, lining up the CO and BO edges. Sew to the sides of Nano Hulk’s head. Line them up  about even with his eyes.
Hair:
Cut strands of yarn in 4 in. lengths. I use worsted weight so that it goes more quickly. Fold in half and hook through the top of his head using a crochet hook in the way you might make a fringe or latch hook rug. You will have to give him a haircut, but using shorter strands is fiddley. There are probably other ways to add hair, but I like this because his hair ends up floofy.
 Trousers:
Trousers are knitted from the waist down, then divided, and each leg knitted separately in the round.
CO 32 sts
Round 1-2: Join and work 2 rounds of k1 p1 rib.
R3-10: Knit 8 rounds.
Divide for legs
R11: K8, CO 2 (for the crotch), slide next 16 sts to holders (to be knitted later), continue to knit remaining 8 stitches. (18 sts on the needles)
R12-15: Knit 4 rounds
BO
Add new yarn at side.
R1 (of second leg): K8, CO 2 for crotch, k8 to end of round
R2-5: Knit 4 rounds
BO
Sew in ends, and sew up crotch. Dress your nano!!

At the risk of tempting the universe/PTB to throw anything more at me, a brief summary of my weekend (with added background info that I bought my first house 2 months ago):
Saturday morning, arse o’clock: text from my mother saying she is sending my dad over and are there any jobs that need doing?
Yes, quite a few. Chief of which is I want to trace whatever fault means that half1 the spotlights in my kitchen aren’t working.2
Slightly later Saturday, more reasonable time: Dad arrives. Decides that since weather is nice, he's going to repair my back gate. Fair enough - it wasn't on my list, but it will mean I can actually open it whenever I need to rather than wrestling with it.
While helping him: Spot something that annoys me, and I have purchased the means to fix but not got around to actually doing it. The security light comes on no matter what time of day it is. It is currently broad daylight. Decide to amend this. Venture into basement, turn electricity off. Arm self with screwdrivers. Prepare to install switch rather than popping fuse out of wall all the time3.
Bit of swearing later: Fuse panel is off wall, but there is something going on outside. Venture out to find a guy out cold in the street running behind the terrace, with two teenage girls speaking to the 999 operator. As I kneel beside him to try and assess, he starts to come round - enough to say he doesn't want an ambulance. I try to get girls to not relay this to the operator, but they do and it's cancelled. He is CLEARLY still out of it. They hang up, go on their way, and he promptly passes out again.
Remind self of how to put someone into the recovery position. Lament that last time I did this it was a conscious, skinny PGCE student in her early twenties, and this is a grown-ass man who is not surreptitiously helping with the rolling over. I also can't get his hand under his head, so I hold his head up myself instead, while my dad finally decides I've been a while and rings 999 back4.
Takes them a while to get there. I think the call timer is over 20 mins. My back is in spasms, my left leg is going numb and pins & needles-y. The guy has vomited three times (thank fuck I rolled him). Paramedics manage to bring him round a bit - enough to get him to confess he's on methodone.
Ow, fucking ow: Have to go back to doing the electrical work, since the power is off and my dad now needs to charge the drill. Set about attaching the cables to the right bits. Discover that the cabling is too short to reach one of the terminals on the new switch. Fuck. Re-install fuse plate. Turn power back on. Thank whoever is listening that I don't seem to have screwed anything up.
Saturday, 2:45: Lunch. I have frozen bread, and a shit-load of eggs. Scrambled eggs on toast it is.
Maybe 3:15?: Dad sets about re-seating curtain pole in the spare room, with decent rawlplugs so that it will take the weight of the curtain my mum is making for it.
Not long later: That's done with minimal fuss5. Dad muses that could do with putting the rail back on the stairs6.
Couple of minutes later: Persuade him that could actually do with lifting the floor since I'd quite like to be able to see in the kitchen after nightfall, whereas the handrail is a minor inconvenience. We begin.
At this point, it is worth noting that I had tried this myself on Thursday evening only to discover the floor appears to be chipboard rather than floorboards. Also it is worth noting that the carpet was laid and then the skirting boards put down over it.
Half an hour later?: Free enough of the carpet to realise that the bed needs to be moved. And by moved, I mean effectively dismantled.
Another hour?: Bed semi-dismantled and on its side7, room totally rearranged. More skirting boards unscrewed, silicon sealant peeled from the walls, skirtings removed8, carpet screws removed, carpet rolled up as much as possible. We manage to prise one of the bits of chipboard up, only to realise that: a) the original floorboards are still mostly there underneath (although mostly not under this particular bit), and b) the majority of the fucking things have not only been screwed down over the floorboards, but also GLUED. I shit you not. Also that some of the boards extend underneath the plasterboard9 wall
We decide this is a bigger job than us and have to at least put the flooring back down and move things we had moved from there into my room back so I can at least get into bed. We decide not to do anything else as it will only need moving again.
Around 6pm: My poor dad heads home. I discover I have a stray text from my mum about half an hour earlier asking if he's still with me.
Not long later: Run bath. Pour self bowl of tesco's coco pops in lieu of meal I haven't got the spoons to cook.10
Ominous message from mother: She is coming over tomorrow to hang the curtain, and set the spare room right again.
Sunday, about 9am: Ow. Owowowowow. Break out the painkillers. Fuck. Browse AO3 for Rose/Ten fics since I have just binged their season and I have feels, okay?
11:30: Text from mother: she is heading over around 1: do I want anything picking up at the temperance bar since she is going?11
Around 12: Decide should get dressed. Painkillers doing their job. Get clean jeans since she is dragging me out for curtain hoops. I might not drive, but I at least know where I'm going.12
12:15: spot a big, ominous wet patch above my bedroom door that is just about to start dripping. FUCK!
Shove water cup under the impending drip, grab towel and slightly larger container, replace cup. Grab bigger container and head for loft access hatch.
Realise loft access is behind all this shit we moved around in the spare room yesterday. Double fuck. Set about moving it elsewhere so I can get in.
12:30:Ring Dad and ask if he can bring over his big set of stepladders as I suspect I probably could get myself into the attic space13, but would break my neck coming back down. Also I need a torch that is not my phone. He laments that Mum has taken the big car. I call her instead, get her to head home and stock up on essentials (ladders, torch, Dad). I decide to change into yesterday's scruffy jeans since this isn't likely to be a clean job.
About 1-1:15: They arrive, and my dad manoeuvres himself into the attic. This is impressive and just a lot of a dangerous move or two involved. It takes a second person (read: me), which means I have no chance of getting up there myself.
Issue is with the chimney stack and can't actually get a bucket under it. But by the light of my phone14 he can see multiple other issues. Although he does move a slate back into place so I can't see daylight between it and its next-door neighbour. Bless him.
2:15: decide to get some lunch and the curtain hoops. Head into town. Can't park15 Mum decides she isn't hungry, drops us at Costa (it's open, at least) and goes to get the hoops herself.
3-ish: Get back. Sort spare room so it is habitable. Because there is still a drip from my bedroom doorframe, so guess where I'm suddenly sleeping tonight. Hang curtain16.
4-ish: Decide to actually put the handrail back, so we can feel we've at least achieved something useful. This turns out to be a bigger job than anticipated because the fucking plaster keeps falling apart and the rawlplugs won't hold properly. And the ones that will, we don't have screws the right size for. I mean...
5:30-ish: Rail is up. They leave. I run bath as everything is ouch.
7-ish: Can no longer ignore fact that I can hear dripping in the bathroom. Get out while bath is still full to try and work out where the fuck it is coming from. Take side panel off bath17. Not obvious. The outlet pipe has drippy bits all along it. Can't get a container under it. Yay.
Shove microfibre cloth under just to try and contain dripping. Suspect the joint in the pipe where new plumbing has been connected to older is the issue, but seems to be from both bloody ends of the joint piece.
7:45-ish: Drain bath, turn shower on so can wash hair. Little later than anticipated - won't dry properly now18.
tl;dr: I hate my house and everything about it.
1. The half that are on the useful side of the kitchen. You know, where the sink and hob are. The ones that help me do things like cook and wash up after dark.
2. Spotlights embedded into ceilings are clearly one of Crowley's inventions.
3. I am not a qualified electrician, but I have studied electronics at school, been taught on the side by my engineer dad, and I know my limits. Do not do this yourself if you aren't absolutely sure of what you're looking at.
4. Can't do it myself as my battery is dead and, guess what - I've turned the electricity off so I can't charge it. And my landline is cordless, so that needs power too.
5. other than Dad not realising that my ceilings are a little lower than his and going 1 step too high on the ladder. Muppet.
6. I removed this about 2 days after I moved in because of the 4 brackets supposedly securing it to the wall, only 2 actually were. I was more liable to break my neck using it than not. It didn't take me long to realise that while removing it was a 1 woman job, putting it back required more hands. 4 more, as it transpires.
7. Dad manages to hit his head on one of the protruding legs of the bed. I swear...
8. Honestly. They were screwed to the wall and then silicon sealed along the top (and joining edges). The carpet was screwed to the floor under the boards.
9. Drywall, for anyone of an American disposition.
10. Ignore suspicious dripping sound. This turns out to be something of a mistake.
11. Fucking yes, I am almost out of all my cordials. Curse not living near it any more
12. Mostly. One-way systems are a touch tricky when you don't have to obey them. As are bus-only routes.
13. On later reflection, this is incredibly doubtful since I lack the upper body strength to haul myself several feet straight up.
14. Because they brought a curtain and cushions as well as the big stepladder, but not a torch.
15. Also not something I have to think about often.
16. Discover Mum and I have been talking cross-purposes as to which side of the window it is going on. Fortunately this is not a massive issue.
17. Inventory of the under-bath: 2 bags grout, 1 tub of paint, 1 jigsaw piece, 1 part of an old loo roll holder, about 50cm of 1cm diameter dowel, 1 electrical cable that is quite possibly live given that an attempt has been made to insulate it inside a plastic bag. What is not there is the wooden frame that should support the sides of the plastic bath.
18. There are many advantages to the care and maintenance of curly hair. Not being able to blow-dry it is NOT one of them. Not having to, otoh, is.

Introspection Blog 9.12
Welcome to another (yes, really) blog. I must warn you that this one may contain toiletry content. I will give an immediate warning before it comes and put triple brackets, like a kind of quarantine. There may be a hint of introspection before the end, too.
On Saturday morning, after the usual malarky (lesson, cleaning, blogging), I washed the van. Despite my worries, there have been no more break-ins. The road outside my block has been improved and resurfaced, so I am going to start parking in front of the building, which is much more public, and the kids don’t play there.
Early, while blogging, I wrote that I had not seen not seen JB yet. Later, while out and about, I saw C—-JB then B___JB, then A_____JB and D____JB (plus more of the same. It was really good to be out walking again, maybe that’s why I saw the registration previously mentioned. It has obviously been out for a while as we’re already on D. I walked to a favourite spot - Tim’s Coffee and Roastery. I had a nice salad and, of course, great coffee. I also did some shopping on the way home.
I was quoted in a BBC 5 Live show/podcast Keir got me into. I was listening to this while walking and was a bit excited. They did not read the part of the email where I claimed to be (probably) their only Central Asian subscriber/listener.
I also went to pick up some keys as I’ll be cat-sitting soon, or cat feeding, but more about that when it happens. There has not been much by way of Uzbek cat news recently. There is sone today. The next is sad. I received news that Кошка (Koshka) our/not our cat from our old house, is no more. For unknown reasons, she was found dead around our former compound. This is sad. I think she had a better life than many street cats, but still, five years is not a long life for a cat. I did, however, make friends with a little cat near my house. I was taking rubbish down to the bins and there was a really pretty cat hanging around. It did not need much encouragement to come to me and rubbed itself against my ankles. It allowed me to stroke it and even pick it up. It was clearly a house cat as it was very clean and well-fed, as well as being so friendly. I’ll keep an eye out for it.
Before 10 o’clock on Sunday morning, I’d been out for three hours. I made an impulsive decision to go to Yangiabad. You’ve heard that name before. Some of you have been there. If you haven’t, you should. I went for three things and only got one of them. I also got something I didn’t go for, a fire extinguisher for the van. I think this is an important item for our journey - indeed it is a legal requirement in my countries. The other item I got that I intended to get was a socket set.
The toiletry content is immediately ahead.
I think I have mentioned that my shower has never really worked properly. It has always sprayed out water in more directions than is useful for the intended purpose of the apparatus. The previous occupant of the flat had warned me about this. The baths tap, to which it is attached, also sprayed water from parts not designed to deliver water to the bathroom. I had reported it, and the tap was fixed, but not the shower. So, I repeated my request for repair. This was partly because I was anticipating a guest (more later). (((I received an email, on Wednesday, to say they were going into my flat, to fix it. Reading the email, I remembered that I had flushed the toilet, that morning, but the flush had not been complete, if you follow. I had decided I’d re-flush after my shower but forgot to do so. This caused me some anxiety, as you may imagine. Although there was no reason for them to lift the toilet seat lid (I always close the lid to flush) they may do so.))) However, the shower is now fixed and I do not know if I should feel embarrassed. In the general toilet area, this week saw the end of: a tube of toothpaste; a roll-on deodorant; and the start of last one of the ten toilet rolls I have bought since this solo school year began.
On Monday, I had to take the van to the ‘interior man’. You may remember I went to meet him a couple of weeks go. She is now there with him. He’s replacing the ceiling lining, carpeting the front, hopefully making the chair rotate and generally beautifying the rest of the interior - oh and installing curtains.
Rumors of school closure began circulating this week (stupid virus). We began to plan for online teaching and learning. If necessary this will involve the use of Google Classroom. As my natural inclination and state is self-isolation, this won’t be too much bother for me.
This week also saw the latest round of Parent Meetings. This was led by pupils and was reasonably well attended. It meant that my Thursday video call was later than usual but it was a good one.
We’ve been doing a topic, common in Y6, on WW2. That’s why we almost went to St Petersburg (stupid virus). We have done much more about the experience of other countries than is common in English classrooms, obviously. You may know that Y6 children, since late Victorian times, have been making models of Anderson Shelters in DT/History lessons during this topic. Our students are no different and join this historic line of educational experience. There’s a boy in one of the other Y6 classes called Andrei and he was taking his model home on Friday. Miss Viktoriya, the TA in that class, told me to go and look at his model, as he held it at the school gate at home time. I went over and said: “Andrei, show me your Andrei-son Shelter”. How we laughed, as did everybody to whom I repeated this exchange over the next 15 minutes. It was a good model.
On Friday evening, I went to a concert. I had seen the advert for it on the back of local buses and see-sawed between wanting to go and not wanting to. It is called Afro-Tenors and features (well try to guess) singing songs in ten languages! The clincher was that it is in The Forum, a really impressive building we always wanted to see inside of. Now I would. After a great call with Mairi and Fred, I went. The concert was good. They sang lots of operatic classic, of course Nesum Dorms. They had two sopranos as well. The ticket said 19:00 as the start time. This was not the start time. The Forum is not quite as impressive on the inside as it is outside, but it’s a good concert hall.
Also this week, it became clear that Mairi’s planned visit at the start of April is as good as dead (stupid virus). Baring a (Trumpian) miracle it will not be possible unless she comes and does not stay with me, we don’t see each other and she stay alone in a room. Not the most interesting holiday. If our school is closed during those weeks, it becomes a slightly more possible proposition. The chances seem small. We also thinking of contingencies and alternatives for getting the van back to Derbyshire.
And here’s my thought this week. I’m glad I came back this year: I had to come back this year. But I wish I hadn’t, I shouldn’t have done. But if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have known that I shouldn’t have done. This thought is related to the previous paragraph, I’m sure. If I hadn’t, there would be no blog and you’d have had an extra five or ten minutes every Saturday morning since September. So here we are and he we go for another week.
Bye (stupid virus).

Wednesday-Friday, 15-17 September
I mentioned going to dinner at the Beach Club when we arrived in Onslow last Sunday and the fact that Heather had seen an advertisement on the drink coasters. It was for a regular 3-day excursion to the Mackerel Islands that we had never heard about. It sounded interesting so we did some research and got very enthusiastic about going there. After quite a bit of reorganisation, we booked and are now going out there next week. Not sure if there are any Mackerel Islands, but we will be on Thevenard Island, one of about 8 in the group. We suspect that Mackerel Islands is just a trading name used by the company that leases at least some of them.
The ferry leaves from Onslow, but we have a few days in Exmouth before that so will come back to Onslow for a couple more days and leave our van connected to power in the van park here while we are out on the island. We have become quite excited about it and it is probably the final straw that will see us cancel our proposed Ningaloo expedition next year. This will probably substitute for it and we may even visit the Abrolhos Islands next month as well - we are still looking at other options too.
We were anticipating a long drive today (actually only 420 kilometres so not really huge) so we planned to get away a little early - but with one thing and another, it was after 11 am before we started out and we needed to get some fuel. That turned out to be cheaper than expected because I think someone else paid our bill and we paid theirs. We bought 111 litres but only got billed for 106. I suspect the woman taking our money had billed the guy ahead of us for our fuel and we got his slightly smaller bill. We drew it to the woman’s attention, but she said she couldn’t change it so we got almost $10 of fuel for nothing.
Then it was basically a long hot drive east, back to the highway at Nanutarra, south past Yannarie, west to Bullara, north to Exmouth and back south-west to Yardie Creek where we are camped. It was basically a big (square) circle to bring us back to only 106 kilometres as the crow/raven flies from where we started.
Thursday
It was a very wild night with extremely strong winds and I had to get up at 3 am to roll in the awning. The wind kept up until early afternoon, but surprisingly, it didn’t seem to make a huge difference to the sea – it still seemed rather benign despite the gale blowing.
There are quite a few places between Yardie Creek Station and Exmouth where you can access the beach so we explored most of them on our way back to Exmouth. One of the first we called in at was Bauden beach - probably the most interesting one. There was some beach there, but there was a broad fringe of rocks and we spent some time exploring them. The tide was coming in so we eventually had to retreat, but the rocks had an interesting array of shells, corals and other rocks embedded in them – actually now part of the rock itself. There were other intricate imprints of elaborate sponges and other marine creatures on the surface of the rocks, but how the rocks had captured the shells and other items and grown around them was quite a puzzle. They were obviously not ancient fossils: rather they seemed to be quite recent developments – probably in years rather than centuries ago.
We called in at quite a few of the other beaches, but none were as interesting. The whole coastline is called the Jurabi Coast after the three species of turtles that nest there – and we were only a week or two early or we probably could have seen them. There is a turtle display at one place and we walked in to see it – but we explored this area pretty well 4 years ago so were more interested in the few birds and interesting flowers than the turtles this time.
We drove up to the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse that affords fantastic views across the ocean and back to Exmouth – probably at least 300 degrees. We ate our lunch there and reread many of the interpretive signs there – about turtles, World War II, the North-West Cape Communication site and other items of possible interest. Last time we were there, we saw dozens of whales a long way out to sea (you can see for many miles so high up on the headland) but this time, we didn’t see any.
We drove out to the wreck of the Mildura, quite a lot of which is still visible and quite close to land. That was interesting and one thing we read was that it has the distinction of having been fired on more times than any other ship in history – although there was not a lot of detail about that. For me though, it was also interesting in that I saw 4 more bird species on the beach to add to our trip-list.
We ended up in Exmouth town (about 40 kilometres from Yardie Homestead) where we bought a few groceries (there are two IGA supermarkets almost immediately opposite each other across a narrow mall – odd that they are competing so close together) and we took our purchases back to the car. It was very hot and I had seen a craft brewery a little further along the mall so we left our groceries to cook in the car while we enjoyed a very cold drink at the bar. The beer didn’t have a lot to recommend it apart from being icy cold, but Heather had a cider that really was nice.
Friday
It was very windy again and I had to wind the awning in at 2 am. Getting up to do this disturbs my sleep, but it is still preferable to laying awake waiting for the next gust to crash the frame into the bracket on the van or flap the canvas loud enough to wake people 4 or 5 caravans away.
We decided to do something similar to yesterday’s explorations, but in a southerly direction today. Before we started though, we drove a little way north to where there were a couple of tracks towards the hills (away from the ocean). We drove in on a very narrow winding track that just got worse and worse until we could see ahead to more than half a continuous kilometre of very rough rocks that really didn’t warrant the risk. Next trick was to find a place to turn around – I think it was a 9-point turn before we were eventually heading back to the main road.
We turned south and paid our entry fee and drove into the National Park and checked out a few of the ocean access points as we ventured 50 or more kilometres, but nothing really appealed to us. They were all essentially surfing spots with the carparks crammed with free-campers and surfers’ utes and wagons. We got out and looked at the beach a couple of times, but long sandy stretches with nothing to see just don’t excite us. We did find one track that headed away from the beach into a gorge and ate our lunch before exploring the area further. I then found a sign that persuaded us not to attempt to go into the gorge itself. I can’t recall the exact details, but it warned of steep rocky climbs with a high degree of difficulty and I think it was about an 8 kilometre trek taking 4 to 5 hours – definitely not something we wanted to tackle in close to 40 degree temperatures.
We eventually drove back to Exmouth to check out where we had to go tomorrow (more on that later) and found a sign to Pebble Beach on the outskirts. We drove in there and the whole beach is composed of small, white rounded stones, interspersed with patches of sand that runs for at least a few kilometres in both directions. We drove several kilometres along the beach and it was quite fascinating. We arrived at a place where the track became very sandy and there was an area of water just inland from the track. It really isn’t a formed track – just an whole series of wheel-tracks showing where previous drivers had felt offered the safest way through – and we didn’t think it likely that the next corner would offer anything more interesting so we turned back again. We added one more species to our bird list along the way – a Crested Tern, not uncommon, but surprisingly, the first we had seen since leaving home.
Driving back through Exmouth, we saw a Caravan Shop and called in and made a couple of small purchases – the main one being a new door handle assembly that we have been looking for during the past couple of weeks. I also got a little tutorial on how to replace it so that is scheduled to be a priority once we return to Onslow after our Island adventure.
The first thing I did when we got back to the caravan was to roll in the awning. I definitely didn’t want to get up in the middle of the night to do that! Needless to say, it was a wonderfully calm night with hardly a breath of wind from dusk to dawn and after.

Elite Eight teams in the men’s NCAA tournament, ranked by their title chances
Tumblr media
Let’s rank Elite Eight teams in the men’s NCAA tournament.
There’s always the concern that an upset-laden opening weekend makes for a boring conclusion to the NCAA tournament. So far, that hasn’t been the case in the men’s bracket even after a barrage of upsets through the first four days. The Sweet 16 still produced captivating basketball, and most importantly kept the top teams rolling right into the Elite Eight.
All three No. 1 seeds that advanced out of the first weekend are still alive as we head to the regional finals. We still have elite NBA talent playing in the tournament, with projected top-three picks Evan Mobley (USC) and Jalen Suggs (Gonzaga) about to face-off in a showcase game on Tuesday. Even the teams we can’t believe are here — UCLA and Oregon State, namely — have the size and the perimeter play to pull one more upset.
This tournament has already been so much fun, and it feels like the best is yet to come. We ranked the remaining eight teams in the men’s tournament by who has the best shot at winning it all.
8. Oregon State Beavers (No. 12 seed)
It would be an extreme understatement to say Oregon State wasn’t supposed to be here. The Beavers were picked to finish dead last in the Pac-12 before the season. They hovered around .500 for most the year, and had no chance of getting an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Oregon State entered the Pac-12 tournament on March 11 knowing every game it would play from here on out was a must win. After six games, the Beavers are still rolling.
Oregon State knocked out No. 8 seed Loyola-Chicago, 65-58, in the first game of the Sweet 16 on Saturday by flummoxing the Ramblers with a zone defense. After Loyola looked so good in knocking out No. 1 seed Illinois in their last game, the Beavers’ combination of size and athleticism finally made them look like a mid-major team. Ethan Thompson (22 points) is turning into a star shooting guard, Jerod Lucas can hit shots, Warith Alatishe is a long-and-bouncy wing who excels defensively, and Roman Silva is a 7’1 senior center who can bother shots at the rim. The Beavers milk the shot clock on every possession, and have the length to close out hard on shooters. It isn’t always pretty, but there’s no denying the results at this point.
This Beavers run is real. Houston shouldn’t be too comfortable.
7. UCLA Bruins (No. 11 seed)
The winningest program in the history of college basketball should probably not count as a Cinderella, but there’s no other way to explain how unlikely this UCLA run has been. The Bruins entered the year ranked No. 22 in the preseason polls, but lost arguably their best player, 6’10 forward Chris Smith, to a torn ACL eight games into the campaign. UCLA bounced back to dominate a large portion of its Pac-12 slate, but then lost its last three games of the regular season and before getting knocked out in its first game of the conference tournament. The Bruins just slid in to the big dance, earning a First Four matchup against Michigan State, which it trailed for most of the night before forcing overtime and pulling away in the extra frame.
The Bruins beat BYU and Abilene Christian easily to bust into the Sweet 16, but a date with Nate Oats and Alabama was always going to be a significantly more difficult test. UCLA was not supposed to win that game, not even when it took a double-digit lead into halftime, not when star wing Johnny Juzang fouled out, and especially not when the Tide forced overtime with a deep buzzer-beating three from Alex Reese. But somehow, UCLA responded in ultra-impressive fashion in the extra five minutes to keep this run going.
UCLA will be an underdog against Michigan in the Elite Eight, but the shot-making of their two 6’6 wings — Juzang and Jaime Jaquez — gives them a puncher’s chance. It’s bizarre that the Bruins ever made it this far. Why stop now?
6. Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 3 seed)
There’s an entire generation of college basketball fans who have never seen Arkansas enjoy this level of success in March Madness. The Razorbacks entered the second weekend of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996, back when head coach Nolan Richardson helmed one of the best programs in the country. Eric Musselman isn’t on that level yet in his second season on the bench for the Hogs, but he’s already taking the team to heights it hasn’t seen since Richardson’s heyday.
Oral Roberts gave the Razorbacks everything they could handle in its bid to be the first No. 15 seed to ever reach the Elite Eight, but Max Abmas’ game-winning shot bounced off the rim and the Hogs advanced with a 72-70 victory. It’s the second straight two-point win for Arkansas in the tournament, and once again it was not pretty. The Hogs shot only 1-of-9 from three-point range, and mostly won the game by dominating the offensive glass. Northern Kentucky transfer Jalen Tate led the way with 22 points, while star freshman Moses Moody shot just 4-of-20.
Arkansas plays fast and attacks you defensively with a good mix of high-pedigree youngsters and battle-tested vets who don’t get overwhelmed by the moment. There are no style points to be had here, but the formula works, and Arkansas just keeps winning. If they beat Baylor, we’ll really start to believe.
5. USC Trojans (No. 6 seed)
USC was a frustrating team to watch for most of the season. Evan Mobley made it immediately apparent that he was a special talent, but it often felt like the Trojans didn’t know how to fully tap into his awesome ability. USC had tons of size inside but not many shot creators on the perimeter. It only took threes on 31.7 percent of its possessions (which ranked No. 307 in DI) despite having good shooters. It felt like Mobley should have been an even greater focal point offensively. Either those concerns were always overblown, or the Trojans just took some time to figure things out. Either way, they’re rolling at the right time straight into the Elite Eight.
USC blew out its third straight opponent in this tournament by disposing of Oregon in the Sweet 16 on Sunday night. This suddenly looks like a legit powerhouse, with a top-15 offense, a top-five defense, and a future NBA star tying it all together. The Trojans have tremendous length on the inside with Mobley and his older brother Isaiah protecting the paint. The perimeter players are knocking down shots. All of this might be surprising if you watched USC all season, but none of it seems like a fluke right now.
USC vs. Gonzaga might be the most anticipated game of the tournament so far. The Zags haven’t seen anything like Mobley yet. USC’s defense is about to face the ultimate test against one of the best offenses college basketball has ever seen in the modern era. USC’s tournament run has been full of special performances so far. Let’s see if they have one more left in them.
4. Houston Cougars (No. 2 seed)
Kelvin Sampson has quietly been building a sustainable winner in the American Athletic Conference over the last six years. His Houston Cougars have won at least 21 games in each of those seasons, and would be making their fourth straight tournament appearance if last year’s postseason wasn’t canceled. This is Sampson’s best team yet thanks to a roster that has both continuity and star-power. As the big boys in the Midwest region have fallen, Houston just keeps going.
The Cougars blitzed Syracuse’s vaunted zone with speed and shooting in a 62-46 victory in the Sweet 16. Houston finished with three times as many assists as the Orange even as they shot just 7-of-26 from three. Star guard Quentin Grimes, a former Kansas transfer, led the way with 14 points, while former UMass transfer DeJon Jarreau added nine points, eight assists, and eight rebounds. Houston is top-8 in the country in both offensive and defensive efficiency, and typically plays at an ultra slow pace with an emphasis on hitting the offensive glass. It isn’t the most glamorous style, but the Cougs haven’t been stopped yet.
Going against Syracuse’s zone should prepare Houston for an Oregon State team that used a zone to beat Loyola in the last round. With one more win, Sampson will finally get his due for what he’s been building for years.
3. Michigan Wolverines (No. 1 seed)
Michigan men’s basketball was one of the most successful programs in the country over the last decade under John Beilein, but there was no guarantee it was going to continue when Juwan Howard took over the program two years ago. Plenty of other former NBA stars had gone back to coach their alma maters and flamed out, but Howard was always too sharp for that. Despite starting the season as the final team ranked in the AP Poll, the Wolverines quickly made it apparent that they were one of the best teams in the country. Not even an injury to star senior forward Isaiah Livers just before the tournament has changed that so far during this postseason.
Florida State was a trendy pick to upset Michigan in the Sweet 16, but the Wolverines owned all 40 minutes on their way to a 76-58 win. This game showed why Howard’s team is ranked in the top-10 in efficiency on both both sides of the ball. Franz Wagner, a 6’9 combo forward, played like the NBA lottery pick he’s projected to be with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Star freshman Hunter Dickinson (14 points) looked great in the middle, while Chaundee Brown (12 points) again proved he’s one of the country’s best reserves. Mike Smith and Eli Brooks are an undersized backcourt, but both are so good in their roles. Brandon Johns filled in admirably for Livers, and will need to keep that up for this run to continue.
The Wolverines still have an incredibly talented front court even without Livers, and the guards are able to get a bucket in a pinch. This looks like an extremely deserving No. 1 seed even if we can’t quite put them ahead of the two other top seeds still standing in the bracket.
2. Baylor Bears (No. 1 seed)
Baylor has been one of the best teams in college basketball for two straight seasons now with a core led by the guard trio of Jared Butler, Davion Mitchell, and MaCio Teague. The Bears never got to show what they were made of last season before the pandemic canceled the tournament, but they would have been a No. 1 seed and a favorite to reach the Final Four for the first time in Scott Drew’s career. Drew’s team has picked up right where it left off this season, only with even more weapons and another year of built-in chemistry this time around.
After a shaky first half, Baylor looked every bit like a powerhouse in closing out No. 5 seed Villanova, 62-51, in the Sweet 16 on Saturday. Mitchell was electric with his pesky on-ball defense and quick-strike driving ability. Butler had a cold shooting night but still a found a way to get to the basket for a couple key second half buckets. Adam Flagler, a newcomer this season as a transfer from Presbyterian, added 16 points off the bench. The Bears have so many different guards who can cut you up on offense while still being able to get after you on the defensive end (No. 27 in efficiency).
This is an elite team in every way, one that is absolutely good enough to win the whole tournament. It’s going to take a Herculean effort for any team to knock them out.
1. Gonzaga Bulldogs (No. 1 seed)
Gonzaga has looked like the best team in the country from the very first game of the season, when they dropped 102 points in a breezy win over Kansas. The Zags ran the table through the rest of the non-conference slate — including wins over West Virginia, Iowa, and Virginia, all of whom were top-4 seeds in March Madness — and then stayed undefeated by blitzing West Coast Conference opponents. This has looked like one of the best college basketball teams in recent memory by the eye test, and the numbers back it up: Gonzaga’s adjusted efficiency margin of +37.82 is the highest since KenPom started tracking the stat in 2002.
Creighton played well in the Sweet 16 and still lost by 18 points in a win that showed off Gonzaga’s embarrassment of riches. The Zags have an All-American-caliber player at guard (Jalen Suggs), on the wing (Corey Kispert), and in the front court (Drew Timme). Their three-guard, four-out offense is a blur of cutting, spacing, and ball movement with knockdown shooters dotting the arc. Joel Ayayi and Andrew Nembhard would be stars elsewhere but are significantly overqualified as fourth and fifth options with the Zags. Good luck stopping this attack.
The Zags are good enough to be men’s college basketball’s first undefeated national champion since Indiana in 1976. They’re the favorites until someone proves they can knock them off.

Fantasy hockey goalie watch: Antti Raanta astounds, Sergei Bobrovsky rebounds
Tumblr media
The fantasy goaltender strikes similar to football’s quarterback in that success in the part doesn’t near guarantee you league-defeating glory, and yet poor play most certainly assures a long season of struggle and strife. Such a fun fantasy position! Volatile too, as illustrated by New Jersey’s Scott Wedgwood earlier this week. After posting a 40-save shutout against the Bruins, earning his managers a cool 15.0 fantasy points, Wedgwood swerved to allow five goals in a loss to the Capitals, which rounded out to a much less-cool -4.0. Quite a pendulum swing in the span of 55 hours.
With that in mind, here’s a quick tour of what’s moving and shaking between the pipes for teams around the NHL, and how craftier fantasy managers might take advantage. Steering clear of the Scott Wedgwood rollercoaster is probably a good start.

The inspiration for this column, Antti Raanta has evolved into a much more prominent fantasy figure in the last few days. Back in action after losing most of January and February to injuries, the 31-year-old is going to be extra busy with Darcy Kuemper shelved for weeks. Not a week or two, but weeks. Plural. So far, so good, as the Coyotes’ interim No. 1 stopped 44 of 46 shots in a overtime loss to Colorado, two days after shutting out those same Avalanche in relief of Kuemper. Also, Raanta is good. He’s a gifted and skilled goalie for a competitive team. And – the most important bit for fantasy managers in need – he’s available in nearly 90% of ESPN.com leagues.

Consider Tuukka Rask just a bit banged up for now. But if it turns out the Bruins’ No. 1 is more than a bit sore after suffering a rumored back injury on Sunday, fantasy managers shouldn’t hesitate to snag Jaroslav Halak immediately (if available). Halak has been good to superb in all but one of nine starts this campaign, including Tuesday’s tight 2-1 OT loss to the Islanders. He’s projected to face the Rangers Thursday.

That injured thumb is costing Petr Mrazek more playing time than we anticipated. Although the netminder remains “on track” in his recovery – Rod Brind’Amour’s words – Mrazek’s return is already considered two weeks delayed. So, soon then. Splitting starts with Alex Nedeljkovic, No. 2 James Reimer is projected to face the Nashville Predators Thursday. But fantasy managers should prepare to expect less from Reimer once the club’s No. 1 is truly rearing to go. And check on Mrazek’s potential availability.

We’ll get our first look at Darryl Sutter’s Flames at home to the Canadiens Thursday. Three or four games in, we’ll begin to see the new head coach’s influence on Calgary’s defensive play. History suggests it should improve. Which is only good news for Jacob Markstrom – back at it after losing time to an upper-body injury – and his respective fantasy managers. Those in need of quality netminding might consider volleying a trade for Markstrom before his numbers really tighten up.

After sitting out since Feb. 20 with a shoulder injury, Elvis Merzlikins is back and tapped to face the Florida Panthers Thursday. Not to heap undue criticism on Joonas Korpisalo when the team has underperformed altogether, but Merzlikins’ return could provide the necessary boost in helping right the Blue Jackets’ ship. Just about any change is welcome after nine losses in 12 games. Fantasy managers who covet regular goaltending should monitor if a little Elvis magic does the trick.

Veteran Mike Smith – not Mikko Koskinen – is the starting netminder for the Oilers, this we know. The soon-to-be 39-year-old has appeared in 12 of 15 games since making his healthy season debut on Feb. 8, and he’s played well. Aside from a pair of unpleasant outings against the Maple Leafs and one ugly partial effort versus the Jets, Smith has been better-than-solid. Just keep in mind he has a history of running hot and cold. Invested managers should be continuously ready to slam the brakes on Edmonton’s No. 1 if/when the wheels blow off.

Bob is back on track, boasting a 4-1-1 record and .926 SV% since mid-February. Now Sergei Bobrovsky is scheduled to make his fourth start in five games, opposing the Blue Jackets Thursday. This is mainly to suggest fantasy managers attached to backup Chris Driedger may modify their expectations, or entertain other options. Perhaps give Raanta a look?

Taking into account the discrepancy in quality of play, expect to see a lot more Kaapo Kahkonen and a lot less Cam Talbot as the season stretches on. While the rookie netminder has won eight-straight – averaging 6.18 fantasy points per game – Talbot has allowed 13 total goals in his past three contests (all losses). Yet the two are only separated by eight percentage points as far as rostering goes. Puzzling. The Wild are scoring goals, and having fun, and winning games, and Kahkonen should be spoken for in more than two-thirds of ESPN.com leagues.

As discussed Monday, up-and-comer Mackenzie Blackwood should be benched, at minimum, until the Devils turn matters around. While the 24-year-old sports a bright future between the pipes in New Jersey, he’s operating as a fantasy liability at present. This feels worth mentioning since Blackwood remains rostered in 72% of ESPN.com leagues.

As coach Barry Trotz promised, Ilya Sorokin is indeed receiving a greater share of the action this second half of the season. So far, it’s rounding in form of a 60/40 split in favor of Semyon Varlamov, who’s starting two-straight – the second of which against the Devils Thursday – for the first time in two weeks. And both Islanders netminders are performing wonderfully. Fantasy managers with daily lineup flexibility and several goalie slots should be all over Sorokin. No one is relinquishing the heavily-rostered Varlamov at this stage.

Fantasy managers invested in Philadelphia’s No. 1 netminder have every right to feel unnerved. Fact is, Brian Elliott has been more consistent, sporting one more win than Carter Hart despite starting near half as many games. Now Elliott is scheduled to start against the Capitals Thursday after successfully subbing in for Hart versus the Sabres on Tuesday. One point out of the playoffs, the Flyers will roll out whoever gives them a better shot at victory. Right now, that’s Elliott. Hart’s fantasy managers in re-draft leagues might start weighing other options.

It’s been a tale of two seasons for Pittsburgh’s go-to goaltender. Through the first month, Tristan Jarry wore a losing record, .864 SV% and 3.82 GAA. Since then, he’s won seven of 10, rocking a .923 SV% and 2.49 GAA. Credit the hiring of Ron Hextall if you so choose. Speaking to the “tangible improvement” in his starter’s overall game, coach Mike Sullivan notes the 25-year-old also feels more comfortable. Managers might check on Jarry’s availability in ESPN.com leagues – a trade target, perhaps? – and relegate Casey DeSmith to daily fantasy work for now.
Tumblr media
Two-straight defeats won’t cost Frederik Andersen his job as the Maple Leafs’ regular go-to, but what about three- or four-straight losses? Recovering to the point of practicing, Jack Campbell might not be far off returning to competitive action. Extra-stingy in limited play to date, a healthy Campbell would likely leapfrog Michael Hutchinson as Andersen’s more occasional replacement. If it comes to that. This scenario is still nowhere near unfolding, but some potentially prophetic spitballing doesn’t hurt either. Andersen’s start against the Jets Thursday is a biggie.

Rostered in only 44% of ESPN.com leagues, Thatcher Demko is the undisputed top netminder for the Canucks. One poor outing versus the Montreal Canadiens being the solo exception, he’s handled all competition with aplomb since the second week of February. Demko could serve fantasy managers well from now until early May, as Vancouver fancies itself a playoff contender. Barring injury or a turn in fortune, we might not see much of Braden Holtby in that span. The Canucks have only three back-to-back sets left on their schedule.
Tumblr media
Loaned to the AHL Henderson Silver Knights, Robin Lehner is practicing for the first time since Feb. 7. Once Lehner is back in rhythm, Marc-Andre Fleury – this season’s fantasy darling in net – will see a reduction in playing time. Particularly if Lehner plays as well as he’s capable.
Tumblr media
Thursday’s game in Philadelphia is a big one for Ilya Samsonov. A win would mark his second in a row and third in four appearances since recovering from COVID-19. It could also spell an end to Vitek Vanecek earning regular starts for the Capitals. While Vanecek has generally held his own in Samsonov’s absence, the eight goals-allowed in his past two starts (one incomplete) impart less confidence. Washington’s backup remains rostered in 56% of ESPN.com and Samsonov is available in nearly a third. Managers across the fantasy spectrum will want to gauge how the 24-year-old manages versus the Flyers.
