WIP INTRODUCTION: BEAST BEHIND A ROSE

genre: fiction/semi historical

narration: pov switch

Lethal. That was all Remy would ever be, an uncontrollable monster.

His breathing remained ragged, his reflection multiplied in the shattered glass. What else was he to see? Where a man should of once stood was the blood of an innocent slain, the eyes of a beast, the hands of hungry vengance. Where was the humanity? The love? Anything that remained sane was in the hands of his partner Ezekiel. How innocent, how sweet was the man holding a poison apple. A gentle dove encased in a sea of lies, soon to be engulfed in a pain he would never escape. He was a rose, the light in which Remy would forever pray for. A detective on a case of a murder for a killer he loved. How bittersweet, the taste always in the back of his mouth. Honey and blood intertwining to create the harmony that Remy wanted to inject into his veins, this feeling, this rush...he didn't want to lose Ezekiel. For Ezekiel was his liquor and Remy found himself to be the addict.

💗 - Tarek. the tag for my wip is crown of thorns! he is the shadow prince, ruthless, reckless, and heavily narcissistic. he only wants to remain king and get some neighboring kingdoms to join him. he ignores the damage but is also somewhat controlled his his guard aka lover (Markus). other than that he uses his shadows to control and manipulate those to get what he wants.

“Times are changing, Alexander,” Mr. Redmond says. His voice is ancient, dry, but his eyes twinkle a brilliant blue behind wide frame glasses. “Best we swim with the current.”

THEMES. magic, family (found and otherwise), sacrifice, the realization of potential, kindness in the face of a cold and uncaring world.

SYNOPSIS.

The city of Baltimore is teeming with the fantastical.

Magic thrives within its walls, seeping from cracks in the cement, flickering in the streetlights. Since its creation, Baltimore has been the beating heart of the supernatural on the East Coast, being the city where most of the extraplanar realms intersect with reality. And for centuries, the magical community has remained this way, hidden from the rest of the world.

However, there are some who are not satisfied with crouching in the shadows.

The only thing a prophetic medical student, a fae antiquities dealer, and a werewolf MMA fighter have in common is their connection to this hidden part of the city, and the fact that the three of them were all in the wrong place at the right time. Now, with the barrier between real and imagined becoming more fragile by the day, these three unlikely heroes will either have to get over their differences and work together, or watch the only world they know disappear forever.

I N T R O D U C I N G: BROKEN RAIL, a neon-soaked space western set at the edge of the galaxy. someone is killing their way through the last remaining members of a long-defunct vigilante group. the two questions are who and why. of course, those aren’t really the questions worth answering. they’re a good place to start, though. ( psd by @pilipalea )

GENRE: space western with a dash of cyberpunk. POV: third person. THEMES: anti-capitalism, multiple forms of vengeance, different applications of justice and what that actually means, love - though maybe not a happy one, the violence we do to each other now and in the future, and goodbyes by dozens. CONTENT WARNING: violence, gore, lots and lots of crime, terrible people doing terrible things.

Irene rubbed at the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand. Her lip was already beginning to swell, hot and aching, and she huffed out a breath. “You could’ve shot me,” she said, working her jaw this way and that. It hurt, but not any more than any other bruise. “You probably should’ve shot me. Are you getting soft or something?”

For a long moment, Mesa’s grip stiffened on the gun. Then she set it down next to the boxes of supplies, all stamped with the new logo of the Protectorate, and sat cross-legged down on the dirt tinged purple and blue. “I knew it was you,” she said. Her gloved fingers fumbled for the familiar shape of the notebook, and Irene peered down at it. All the same flowers were pressed into the pages - one for every planet Mesa had gone to since she began wandering across the whole frontier. “Are you here for these?” The side of her boot knocked against one of the boxes.

“I should be.” Irene folded her arms. “They’re not yours.”

“You can take them back if you’re that worried about stealing all of a sudden.”

On instinct, Irene popped the lid off the top one and stared down the empty wrappings of a few rations, a few empty boxes of superheated rounds, and a few boxes of water. Picking one up and shaking it a little revealed only a suspicious kind of silence. “Collecting garbage, then? There’s a lot of money in that now.”

Mesa smiled, small and secret, and said nothing. She had always been good at that.

“Look,” Irene finally managed. “I’m not here because of the supplies. I didn’t even know we were missing supplies in this sector. I’m here because Keiko’s dead.”

The fire crackled. Mesa ran her fingers through her hair for a moment, tucking a few more strands behind her ear. The light threw strange shadows across her face, her head tilted at an angle that made her expression nearly inscrutable. “Right,” she said.

“So’s Rafael. T.J. is too. Zee was drowned in the Nightjar’s bathroom two weeks ago.”

“If you’re going to say that I killed them, Irene, just do it.”

“I wouldn’t say that.”

“Mm. But you’d think it.”

It made sense on one level. But on the next, on the level that they knew each other on, truly and genuinely, Irene knew better. Mesa didn’t drown people. She liked distance and a rifle. She liked an unhurried kind of death. Once, they were laying together on the tile floor of a rest pod’s bathroom, staring up at the fluorescent bulb flickering out in the ceiling, and Irene said, languid and drunk and warm, that sometimes she just wanted to shoot her in the head.

“No. I wouldn’t do that either.”

Mesa’s eyes flicked upwards, the two of them watching each other warily. Then the moment broke. “Guess not,” she murmured, as easily as if she had meant that all along.

random fact: i grew up learning martial arts and with this in mind, a doctor of traditional chinese medicine recently told me that the hours i had spent every day when i was 6 leaning on my hands positioned backwards against a wall had deformed my bones enough that i will certainly suffer from arthritis the moment i hit my forties. whether or not that happens, i don’t look forward to my forties. i am, therefore, genuinely terrified.

[ i. ] neusols and noloumna is my oldest work-in-progress and most extensive series. the worldbuilding in it could ( possibly ) be compared to the wizarding world, grishaverse, and shadowhunter universe ( i’ve only read leigh bardugo’s work, but i know that all of them have stories related to the universe that aren’t part of the main series ). essentially, n&n is an introduction into a world that will have many more duologies and stories accompanying it. 

[ ii. ] there’s a “reverse redemption arc” ( hero to villain instead of villain to hero ) that hadn’t been planned prior to writing the character in which this occurs. not going to lie, people are going to die when they read all about my son.

[ iii. ] i made up the names for all of the characters in this series ( as well as three ( or more ) languages / religions and many places ). thank god for keyboard smashing, lol.

[ iv. ] i’m still not sure what inspired this story, honestly. there are so many historical and fantastical elements that i can’t confirm what caused its development. the idea came to me during a reading slump and long time of not doing anything even remotely creative, so it’s hard to say. i fell more in love with it after realizing i can write the story that i’ve always wanted to read, though.

[ v. ] the plot has changed a million times, btw. the only things that have stayed consistent are one. ) the title, two. ) the main characters ( neusols & noloumna ), and the main romantic relationship ( my heart ahhhh )!

what has happened in the book: i wrote the intro & introduced the characters AND i wrote the first turning event of the book so readers can clearly see it going in some sort of direction. there isn’t a clear plot other than six people trying to avoid a war, so whatever happens next is going to be completely unexpected. also: jangya is love jangya is light

next goal: prologue + chapters 8/16, 27,000/50,000, 55%, actually introduce the themes of purity guilt that i have been meaning to include + show more signs that the saints are different from everyone else bc they were resurrected
